Obituary Preview: David Michael “Mike” Bollinger , 46 of Thurmont passed away unexpectedly on Saturday April 9, 2022, at his home.
Born August 21, 1975, in Leesburg, Virginia, he was the son of Lester E. and the late Barbara nee Heffner Rice.
Mike enjoyed being outdoors, spending his time deer hunting, riding ATVs, and participating in shooting sports of which he enjoyed with his family. Teaching his wife and sons how to shoot. He enjoyed tuning and tinkering with trucks, especially Fords. Mike also enjoyed collecting guns and was a lover of Rottweiler dogs. Mike was a devoted employee of the Ayer Corporation for 29 years where he served as a supervisor. He was a devoted and loyal member of Pioneer Baptist Church.
Mike was a problem solver and would go out of his way to help someone in need. Most of all he loved his family and was a devoted husband, father, and friend to those who came to know him.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 25 years Amy Bollinger; sons Levi Bollinger (Miranda Peterman), David Bollinger; father Lester Bollinger (Dot); siblings Joe Bollinger (Julie), Lisa Jones (Tracy), Judy Onley (Kevin), Beth Emory (Terry); and many nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
The family will receive friends on FRIDAY April 15, 2022 at the Pioneer Baptist Church 13802 Long Rd. Thurmont, MD 21788 from 1PM until the start of the services at 2PM. Lee Vernon Coulter Jr - October 23, 1935 - April 06, 2022

Obituary Preview: Lee (Buckey) Vernon Coulter Jr., 86, of Thurmont passed away on April 6, 2022, at The John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.
Born October 23, 1935, in Washington, D.C. he was the son of the late Lee Vernon & Muriel Evelyn Canter Coulter.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 59 years Barbara Ann Coulter; brothers-in-law Richard Etzler, Gerald McCauley, Joseph Ford, and Wilbur Ford & niece Debbie Etzler.
Lee grew up in Frederick, spending his childhood playing at Baker Park.  He graduated from Frederick High in 1953.
Lee was a route salesman most of his life, working for Thompson’s Dairy in DC and Thomas English Muffins in Frederick. He and his wife Barbara also owned the Picnic Basket in Thurmont and Robbie’s Pizza in Gettysburg.
Throughout his life Lee was a lover of cars and dirt track racing. He raced street cars in the ‘50’s and later ran a ’67 Chevelle setup for drag racing.  He also owned a late model car that his son Gary drove.  He enjoyed reading, attending dirt track races and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his children Terri Bowers (David), Gary Coulter (Deborah); grandchildren Jason Phebus (Sarah), Wesley Phebus (Casey), Blaine Phebus (Shaelyn), Megan Coulter (Brianna), Mitchell Coulter (Autumn), Clayton Phebus, Marshall Coulter; 14 great-grandchildren; siblings Robert Coulter (Barbara), Kenneth Coulter, Joan Etzler, Gerald Coulter (Nancy), Nona McCauley; sisters-in-law Maryann Ford, Shirley Ford; nephews & nieces Richard Etzler, Sean McCauley, Sherri Burgin (Paul) & Lynn Suarez (Troy).
The family would like to thank the Neuro Team at John’s Hopkins for their care and compassion.
A memorial service will be announced at a later time.

Carroll Richard Wetzel - March 15, 1927 - March 18, 2022

Obituary Preview: Carroll Richard Wetzel, 95 of Friends Creek passed away peacefully on Friday March 18, 2022, at his home.
Born March 15, 1927, in Zora, Pennsylvania in a cabin along the banks of Friends Creek he was the son of the late Harry Francis and Mary Viola nee Turner Wetzel.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife Deloris Ann Wetzel, brothers Harry “Booze” Wetzel, John Wetzel, & Ralph Wetzel; sisters Gladys Fox, Margaret Honer, Goldie “Toots” Wetzel, & Mabel Wetzel; brothers-in-law Delmar Horner, Dick Harbaugh, Jim Wetzel, & Bill Fox; sisters-in-law Louise Wetzel & Ruth Wetzel.
In his early days Richard was drafted to service in the US Army but was medically discharged a short time later.
He worked many careers over the span of his life including as a lineman first class for West Penn Power, Town of Thurmont, as well as a bodyguard & chauffeur for Harold Hess of Hess Manufacturing Company of Waynesboro, Pennsylvania.
No matter whether you know him as dad, pap, Richard, Dick, Carroll, or any other semblance of names he was indeed a character. From his awesome tee shirts with iconic phrases like “where’s the beef” and “don’t argue with your wife, just dicker” or his cowboy boots and hat Richard was indeed a legend in his own rite. Many referred to him as the “Sheriff of Friends Creek” possibly for his stopping the theft of the church bell of the Friends Creek Church of God among his other crime stopping deeds in the Friends Creek community.
Richard was an avid hunter and shooting enthusiast, loved training and riding horses, was a self-taught farrier, and enjoyed tinkering around with cars and other things that go. Richard enjoyed playing his guitar, banjo, and fiddle. He would go out of his way to help those in need and never knew a stranger. Richard was a homebody in many respects and enjoyed sitting on his front porch and watching the cars go by.
He is survived by his children Carroll Douglas Wetzel, Margaret Black (Jerry); brother Stanley “Buck” Wetzel; sister Virginia Rentzel; grandchildren Douglas Richard Wetzel (Missy), Joseph Wetzel (Kerry), Jessica Wetzel (Rodante), Colt Black (Micheala), great-grandchildren Matthew, Lauren, Denver, Atlas, Liberty; sister-in-law Gladys Wetzel; former daughter-in-law Sandy Wetzel.

Allison Cecilia Richards - September 23, 1960 - March 07, 2022

Obituary Preview: Allison Cecilia Richards went home to be with the Lord Monday, March 7, 2022. She was born on September 23, 1960 in Washington, D.C. and was the daughter of Eleanor “Becky” Plitt and Donald C. Demeritt, and step-daughter of Bill Plitt.
She grew up in Rockville, MD and graduated from Rockville High School in 1978, having been a proud member of drama club, chorus, and her church youth group, as well as a passionate fan of Elton John. She attended Montgomery College before starting her career in administration, beginning as a legal secretary.
She met her husband, Jim Richards, during a power outage in the same apartment building in Gaithersburg and they were married in July 1988 at Eyler’s Valley Chapel in Emmitsburg, MD, and decided to settle down in Thurmont, where they’ve been ever since. In 1996, after the birth of her two children, she left the legal world to start Catoctin Lighting Services with Jim and became vice president of the company. She was a member of Thurmont United Methodist for 30 years where she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, and participated in numerous Bible studies and Emmaus retreats.
She was preceded in death by both her parents and her step-father. She is survived by Jim, her husband of 33 years; her son, Evan Richards of Baltimore; her daughter, Rebecca and son-in-law, Philip Dickerson of Gettysburg, PA; her grandchildren, Titus, Gabriel, and Baby Dickerson; her brother, Kevin and sister-in-law, Debbie Demeritt of Camden, Delaware; her sister, Elaine and brother-in-law Stephen Karp of Boston, MA; her brother Tom and sister-in-law Doris Plitt of Pasadena, MD; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Gene and Dee Brown of Redwood, NY; and her nieces and nephews Noah Brown, Rebekah Randall, Mark Demeritt, and Shelby Karp.
She loved her Lord Jesus Christ, her family, her grandsons (who she spoiled so generously), her church family, her dear friends from high school, Anne, George, and Don, and her adopted rescue cat companion, Molly. Her incredibly joyful spirit, her amazing talent for gift-giving, and her laugh will be dearly missed, but all who knew her know she is now walking in glory with the Lord, with no pain and no tears in her heavenly home.

Robert Henry Brennan Sr. - January 25, 1941 - March 02, 2022

Obituary Preview: Robert Henry Brennan Sr., 81, of Thurmont, MD died Wednesday, March 2, 2022, at Frederick Health Hospital.
Born January 25, 1941, in Niagara Falls, NY, he was the son of the late Milford Brennan and Elsie Nesbit.
He is survived by his loving wife, Evelyn Marie, who he happily married on December 23, 1975.
In addition to his wife, Robert is survived by his sister Sharon Kelley and husband, Richard. As well as his 7 children: Kathy Ritchie and husband, Shawn; Robert Brennan Jr. and wife, Nikki; Mark Brennan, Carol Louise, Karen Sue, Gerald Wayne, Elizabeth Marie, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his 3 brothers-in-law: Richard White and wife, Donna; Jerry White and wife, Dianne; Robert White and wife, Lorraine; and sister-in-law, Mary Mackley and husband, Buzz.
He is preceded in death by his brother Richard Brennan, brothers-in-law Charles and William, sisters-in-law Sue and Jeanette, and his granddaughter, Rebecca Layne.
Robert served in the Army from 1960 until 1966. He then worked for the National Institute of Health until he retired in 2011. He graduated from American University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Management and Technology, and later went on to complete his master’s degree. He was an active life-long member of the American Legion Post 168 in Thurmont, MD, and a member of the Sons of the American Legion Post 282 in Woodsboro, MD. He was also a life-long member of the AMVETS Post 7 in Thurmont, MD. Robert was a coach for the Thurmont Little League for many years. Robert was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.. He was an avid Washington Redskins Football fan and he loved to do wood working after retirement.

JoAnne Lichtenberg - April 09, 1957 - February 11, 2022

Obituary Preview: Joanne Duran Lichtenberg, 64, of Blue Ridge Summit, PA passed away on February 11, 2022, at Chambersburg Hospital.  She is survived by her loving husband, Jimmy and her daughter, April as well as her boys, Jonah and Noah, her two black labs who will miss her terribly.
She was born April 9th, 1957 in San Antonio, TX.  She is the daughter of Jesse “Joe” and Maria (Valdez) Duran.  She is also preceded in death by her uncle Louie and her son-in law Brandon.
Joanne was a vibrant, loving wife and mother.  Her laugh was infectious and her smile was blinding.  Her presence filled the room and she loved making everyone laugh.  She was a huge Dallas Cowboys fan in the heart of Steelers country and she wasn’t afraid to show off her Cowboys and proud attitude!  Her loss leaves her family bereft of her light and the beautiful soul that was uniquely Joanne.

Janie was the wife of the late Albert B. Ecker, whom she married on December 22, 1949. She is survived by a son Gregory M. Ecker (Peggy) of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and daughter Deborah D. Ecker of Thurmont, Maryland. She is also survived by eight grandchildren: Tia Cole (David), Chrissy Delk (Craig), Steven Ecker II (Aaren), Louis Ecker, Gene Bollinger III (Colleen), Matthew Bollinger, George Bollinger (Monica), and Dana Bowman (Matt). Twelve great grandchildren: Kendall & Cohen Delk, Aleck & Athen Ecker, Angel (Nick) & Jacob Bollinger, Emma (Moises) & Steven Bollinger, Madison & Peyton Bollinger, and JD & Elijah Bowman, along with three step great grandchildren: Brendon (Chelsea), Lachlan, and Emma Ford. She is also survived by sister-in-law Audrie Coe as well as several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a son, Steven B. Ecker, a great grandchild and ten siblings.
Janie was lovingly known by her family as Mom, Mam-Maw, Mom Mom, Mam, and Aunt Janie. In her younger years, she enjoyed spending time at the beach, shopping, cross stitching, painting by numbers, and collecting owls and snowmen.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 26, 2022, at Trinity United Church of Christ, 101 E main St, Thurmont at 10am with a celebration of life service at 11am. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Cemetery, Thurmont with Pastor Faith Warner officiating. Carl was a 1969 graduate of Catoctin High School. Following graduation, Carl worked for Frederick County Public Schools, as a custodian for Linganore High School, and retired after 32 years.
Carl was also a member of the Rocky Ridge Fire Department and St. John’s Lutheran Church in Creagerstown, Maryland.
Carl was very sports oriented. The Baltimore Ravens, Baltimore Orioles, and Maryland University basketball were his favorite teams.
He is survived his brother, Gary Setherley of West Virginia; two nieces, Debra (Keith) Davis, and Karen Ferdock; three great nieces, Kortney (Robert) Potts, Natalie and Ian Ferdock; great-great niece Kora Potts; along with aunts, uncles, and cousins.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 13, 2022, 6-8pm at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 8619 Blacks Mill Rd Thurmont, MD 21788; and Friday January 14 from 10:30AM to start of funeral service at 11AM with Pastor Thomas Kenna officiating. Interment will follow in Creagerstown Cemetery.

Jody Ann Lawyer-Hahn - May 28, 1951 - January 06, 2022

Obituary Preview: Jody A Lawyer-Hahn 70, of Thurmont, passed away peacefully on Thursday January 6, 2022, after a long hard-fought battle with Parkinson’s.
Born May 28, 1951 in Thurmont, Jody was the daughter of Virginia Gelwicks and the late Robert Gelwicks.  Jody graduated from Catoctin High School in 1969 and from Beauty School in 1970.  She was a beautician in Thurmont for over 40 years.  During that time, she co-owned and operated Shear Magic from 1984 to 2001.  Jody began her second career as a rural mail carrier in 1995 and continued to work both jobs until Parkinson’s forced her to retire in 2017.
Jody is survived by her mother Virginia Gelwicks, husband Paul Hahn, children Chad Lawyer and wife Jodi, Monica Crone and husband Mike, grandchildren Jacob Crone, Ethan Crone, Haley Crone, Stella Lawyer & Hazel Lawyer.  Jody is also survived by her siblings, Connie Slick and husband Kenny, Ernie Gelwicks and wife Peggy, and Angie Brown and husband Keith.
Jody enjoyed her grandchildren, her trips to the beach and vacations with her friend, Lisa Weant.  She will be remembered as a hardworking, loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend whose faith in God never wavered through all of her struggles.
The family will receive friends from 10 am to 11 am with a memorial service to celebrate her life immediately following on Saturday January 15, 2022, at Weller United Methodist Church 101 N Altamont Ave, Thurmont, MD 21788.

Don Ray Tyler - September 16, 1946 - December 08, 2021

Obituary Preview: Don Ray Tyler, 75 of Thurmont, Maryland passed away on Dec. 8, 2021, at Frederick Health Hospital where he left his earthly home to go to his heavenly home. Don fought a valiant fight for 9 years against Parkinsons Disease. Even while fighting this dreaded disease, he always said he was a blessed man. He was born Sept. 16, 1946, in Clifton Forge, Va. He was the son of the late William Edward Tyler and Aline Virginia Jeffries Tyler. He was a Christian with a strong faith and loved his family. He was an organ donor. In 1966 Don married G. Darlene Six. They traveled extensively throughout the US., sharing many great adventures together especially out West. He is also survived by children, Shawn Tyler, Shane Tyler, and Shannon Wetzel (Mike). Grandchildren, Bryson Tyler, Brayden Tyler, Madison Wetzel, Dalton Wetzel, and Zoe Wetzel. He is survived by brothers, Norman (Barb), William (Betty Ann), David (Lynn) sister, Bonnie (Danny). He was preceded in death by 3 siblings. Don was a Martial Arts instructor at various schools including Mt. Saint Mary's Univ., Gettysburg College and Fort Ritchie. He enjoyed traveling, going to auctions, watching westerns, listening to country music and was an avid reader. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a mountain boy at heart. In 1965 Don served an 8,000-hour apprenticeship program at Frick Company in Waynesboro, PA. In1969 Don went into commercial construction with Standard Acoustics. While working at Standard Don’s leadership skills shined and were quickly noticed enabling him to begin overseeing large projects. While with Standard, Don was recruited by Sigal Construction in Wash. DC as a trouble shooter traveling to different locations in the US and Israel. This led to him becoming a Senior Superintendent. In 1994 he joined Hitt Contracting. After retiring from Hitt he was recruited by Marion Construction. He rose from humble beginnings to become a highly respected and sought-after Senior Superintendent, receiving many letters of accommodations. He worked on; Sibley Hospital, American University College of Law, United Airlines, Gannett Towers, Kennedy Center, Korean Embassy, MCI World Headquarters and GW University Law School just to name a few. He was very honored during his career to meet Judge Anthony Scalise. The family wishes to express their gratitude and thanks to Frederick Health Center, Citizens Rehabilitation, Hospice and special neighbors Matt and Jen Rolko. Richard Irving Haxton - June 06, 1924 - December 05, 2021

Obituary Preview: Richard I. Haxton passed away on December 5, 2021 peacefully in the care of Fahrney-Keedy skilled nursing facility in Boonsboro, MD.
Richard was born in National Homeopathic Hospital in June, 1924, to Irving and Frances P. (Wayland) Haxton. In 1943, he joined the Army of the United States as an infantryman in Baltimore and was separated in Ft. Meade in 1945. He served in Italy most of that time, serving as a switchboard operator (650 mos.) and lineman for the 91st div, 362nd inf.
At the end of the war, Richard returned to Washington D.C. and attended George Washington University, graduating with a degree in Psychology. While living here he was introduced to his future wife, Phyllis Rainaud by Phyllis's brother Ric Rainard. Phyllis and Richard married in1950 and remained so until Phyllis' death in 2015. Richard and Ric continued to be best friends for 70 years. Ric fondly remembers their travels together, exploring beaches, mountains, and rivers.
Richard worked for the Bell System and later AT&T in Washington D.C. until his retirement. He enjoyed anything on rails, whether it was trains or streetcars. Richard and Phyllis also traveled extensively throughout their marriage. He was a lifetime member of the ARRL and the Bible Fellowship Net. His skills as a HAM radio operator led him and Phyllis to perform Christian Mission work around the world.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Phyllis and eldest son Walter Haxton. He is survived by his children Joan Kanter and husband Mitchel Kanter Sr., Audrey Whipp, Calvin Haxton, and wife Harriet Haxton; and grandchildren Jinnie Hostetler, Wendy Kanter and husband Paul Halliday, Mitchel Kanter Jr., and wife Rozelle Botes Kanter; and great granddaughter Waverly Halliday.
A memorial service for Richard is planned for Saturday December 18, 2021, 6pm- 8pm at Black's Funeral Home at 227 N. Church St, Suite B, Thurmont, MD 21788. All are invited to attend. His interment will be at the National Military Cemetery in Culpeper, VA on Monday December 27, 2021, at 12:00pm.
Richard and Phyllis faithfully attended church everywhere they lived. Even while under the care of others, Richard used his walker or wheelchair to hear God's Word when it was offered. People wishing to honor Richard’s lifelong commitment to hearing God's message for us are encouraged to make an offering in Richard's name to the Shepard's Chapel broadcast at Shepherd's Chapel, PO Box 416, Gravette, AR 72736, United States 800-643-4645.

She was born on September 24, 1979, in Fairfax, Virginia to her parents, John and Christine Ortiz.
From the moment of birth, she was a miracle, surviving a rare genetic disorder and later thriving despite her medical condition. She continued to be a miracle throughout her life; always defying the expectations of doctors and others with a tenacity that defines her character perfectly.
Lydia is warmly greeted on the other side by many family members including her maternal grandparents, John and LaVerle VanDoren, and her paternal grandmother, Jenny Ramos Ortiz. She was blessed to have developed unique, loving bonds with her five immediate siblings, who watched over her throughout her life: Nicole, Scott, Jacob, Kimberly, and William. Lydia blessed her family with her sweet spirit, joyous smile, and her infectious, full-bodied laugh. She will be greatly missed by her large, extended family of aunts, uncles, cousins, and her forever-caretaker, Aunt Theresa.
A memorial service will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1811 Latham Rd., Frederick, MD on Friday, November 5th, at 9:30 am. A time to visit with the family will follow the memorial service. A family burial will take place in Front Royal, VA.
The Ortiz Family would like to extend their gratitude to the many families, friends, schools, Unified Community Connections, DDA, and ARC for all the support Lydia received throughout her life. Lydia leaves behind the gift of compassion, and her spirit lives on through enduring kindness, which is our lesson and her legacy.

Born October 24, 1935, in Gettysburg, PA, he was the son of the late Joseph Harry & Ruth nee Galt Eyler. In addition to his parents Joe is preceded in death by his beloved wife Harriett nee Roberts Eyler, a son Joseph Sterling Eyler, and brother Joseph Albert Eyler
He attended Mercersburg Academy, graduated from Thurmont High School and attended Syracuse University, NY.
As a child Joe grew up in the horse business traveling to various fairs and the like to attend horse races with his family. As he grew up his passion for horses continued as he became the first tattoo technician for the U.S. Trotting Association traveling the nation tattooing horses. He also owned Freestate Standardbred Sale Company & Eyler Stock Farm. He loved raising foal by his stallion, Happy Man.
Joe loved his country and was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force.
Joe also had a passion for driving trucks starting as a test driver for Mack Trucks in Hagerstown and worked for several trucking firms throughout the area including Frock Brothers, Bavarian Motor Transport where he & his wife hauled high end cars, Keilholtz Trucking, and Maryland Transportation.
He was also passionate to support the youth of the Catoctin community through his active support of 4-H and FFA programs. Joe also was president of the Catoctin Youth Association starting the football and soccer tournaments where up to 38 teams a day would play. He later founded & hosted Thurmont Heritage Days.
Joe was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ of Thurmont, Columbia Lodge #58 of Frederick, and Plymouth Chapter of the Eastern Star and Amvets Post #7 of Thurmont.
Surviving is his son Troy S. Eyler (Dorothy) of Hillsdale, PA; daughters Barbara Ann Garcia (James) of Palm Harbor, FL, Mize Mitzi Jo Campbell (Rick) of Frankfort, IN; grandchildren Sterling Garcia, Brittany Eyler, Brooke Eyler; and brother Joseph Eugene Eyler of Westminster, MD along with many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He is survived in addition by close cousin Wanda Riffle and her three children: Mike, Bryan, and Nicole, along with special friend Novella McGuire.

Born February 9, 1977, in Olney, Maryland she was the daughter of the late Henry Alan & Marcella Joyce nee Murphy Waterman.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother David Murphy.
Anna attended Damascus High School graduating in 1995, and Virginia Tech in 2000 with a bachelor’s degree in dairy science.
Anna found her calling and earned her certification as a Respiratory Therapist from Frederick Community College and went on to work for Wellspan Health at both Gettysburg and York Hospitals.
Anyone who knew Anna knew she loved her Lamancha goats. She was involved in showing goats since her youth while in 4-H and continued to show in various fairs and other goat shows throughout Maryland, winning numerous awards along the way. She additionally assisted with numerous goat workshops for members of 4-H who could learn from her experience.
But goats were not Anna’s only interest, she was a huge Star Trek & Star Wars fan. She had attended numerous conventions for them both. She enjoyed going to county fairs, and spending time with her other animals on the farm including chickens, game hens, dog, and cats.
She is survived by her sister Tammie Corcoran, aunt Judy Bridenbaugh, sister-in-law Susanna Murphy, and the Stockman family.
The family will receive friends at BLACK’S Funeral Home 224 N. Church St. Suite B Thurmont, MD on TUESDAY September 7, 2021, from 2-6 PM.

Nancy enjoyed fishing and camping especially on the Monocacy River and the Chesapeake Bay/ Chincoteague as well as hunting on their land in Thurmont. Many knew Nancy and Bill through their vending company, Bill’s Vending, which they owned and operated for many years. She also adored her beloved pug, Tater.

In addition to his parents he is survived by his siblings Ira Reed, Lee Ann Reed(Kaitlyn); paternal grandfather Norman W. Greenwald Sr.; uncles Gary Greenwald (June), Norman Greenwald Jr.(Beverly), Russell Reed; aunts Gloria Greenwald(Elizabeth), Beverlee Greenwald, Margaret Wheatley(Jon), Carrie Webb(Gene); special cousin Norman Greenwald II and numerous other cousins.  Also left to mourn is his beloved dog Bella.
