Juanita E. Graham - June 15, 1932 - January 11, 2024

Departed: 01/11/2024 (Senecaville)
Obituary Preview: Juanita E. (Guiler) Graham, age 91, of Senecaville, went to be with the Lord on Thursday (January 11, 2024).
She was born June 15, 1932 in Summerfield, daughter of the late Howard and Clara Guiler.  At the age of 2 years, she and her family moved to a farm north of Sarahsville, where she resided and worked on the farm until she married.  Juanita graduated from Sarahsville High School in 1949, having met her future husband there.
On June 14, 1953, she married William (Gene) Graham, and together they had five children.  Mrs. Graham was a homemaker until her children grew older.  She then went to work for “Schumacher’s Market” in Senecaville, where she was head cashier for 10 years.  Later, she became a daycare provider at the “Joyland Daycare Center” in Byesville.  She enjoyed caring for the children each day, and the children loved “Miss Juanita.”  After working there for about a decade, the flood of 1998 forced the closure of the center, much to her dismay.  Juanita worked for the Board of Elections as a poll worker in Senecaville for many years during that time, also.
Mrs. Graham, along with her husband Gene and five children, began attending services at “Stop Nine Church of Christ” in Byesville in the year 1970.  They became active members of the church with Gene serving as a deacon, and Juanita and Gene together teaching children’s Bible classes on Sunday morning.  They greeted visitors at the door and cleaned the church buses, along with their children.  She and Gene also helped clean the church building, while Juanita made the communion bread faithfully, every week for Sunday morning services for 32 years.  She also prepared food for the funeral dinners hosted by the church.
Juanita enjoyed cooking, baking, babysitting, playing Scrabble, and bowling.   She and Gene together enjoyed gardening, canning, raspberry-picking, Jigsaw puzzles, and going for walks.  One of their favorite hobbies/interests was housing purple martins and watching them grow their young.  They also enjoyed watching NASCAR races together, as well as “Ohio State Buckeyes” football games.  In their earlier years, they held card parties at their home and played Euchre with family and friends. Mrs. Graham spent most of her time in the kitchen, baking up sweet treats for her family and others.  She was well-known for her homemade bread, pies, cakes, cinnamon rolls, nut rolls, cookies, and buckeyes, just to name a few.  Everybody was welcome at Juanita’s home, and she insisted on feeding anybody who stopped by for any reason.  Nobody ever left hungry!
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Graham was preceded in death by her husband, William “Gene” Graham - they were blessed with 53 years together, before Gene’s passing in August 2006; a grandson, David Graham; three sisters, Eileen Williams, Beatrice Frank, and Lela Mae Zaleha; and three brothers, Lester Guiler, Myron Guiler, and Marvin Guiler.
Family meant everything to Juanita, and she took pride in the raising of their five children.  She is survived by four sons: Gregory (Tammy) Graham of Senecaville, Gary (Connie) Graham of Cambridge, Kirby (Cheryl) Graham of Senecaville, and Rick (Robin) Graham of Byesville; and a daughter, Kathy (Jeff) Gann of Senecaville; seventeen grandchildren: Dan and Darren Graham, Nicole Hester, Jeremy, Jacob, and Jason Graham, Hunter Shoemake, Amy (Graham) Valentine, Kristen (Graham) Ferraco, and Kaleb Graham, Erica (Gann) Zifzal, Kody and Isaac Gann, Tyler Graham, Bria (Graham) Hunt, Baylee (Graham) Groves, and Brilee Graham; numerous great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; several nieces & nephews; as well as her special friends: Don and Janet Hendershot, and Leona Powell.  Juanita was well loved by so many in the church and the community; she will be greatly missed.
Visitation will be held Wednesday (January 17, 2024) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Stop Nine Church of Christ in Byesville, where funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. with Evangelists Woody Biggs and Mark Beros officiating.
Burial will follow at Senecaville Cemetery.

Dorothy enjoyed going to all the events that not only involved her children, but also her grandchildren.  She hosted all the family holidays all the years she could.  Her favorite holiday was Christmas - the house was crowded with family, presents, and love.  Her family was very important to her.

Shirley Louise Swartz - November 25, 1934 - October 21, 2023

Departed: 10/21/2023 (Senecaville)
Obituary Preview: If you are reading this obituary, I am now where I have longed to be – in the arms of Jesus.   Home.
Shirley Louise Swartz, age 88, passed away on 10/21/23 at the Astoria Place of Cambridge.  She was a lifelong resident of the Senecaville and Byesville areas.  There will not be a service at this time, but a celebration of life will be held at a later date to be determined.
Shirley would say her greatest accomplishment and joy was her family.  Shirley’s husband, Richard (Dick) Swartz passed away in 1993.  Surviving are her children, Rick (Vicki) Swartz, Karen Swartz, Carol (Robin) Woods, Mary Daniels, Jeff (Angela) Swartz, and Melissa Sturtz.  Also surviving is her special niece, Delores Holland; and daughter-in-law, Carmen Swartz.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Uriah and Floral Potts; her son, Kenneth “Randy” Swartz; a granddaughter, Tiffany; a grandson, Paul; two great-grandsons, Michael and Willie III; and son-in-law, Garry Sturtz.
Shirley leaves many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and  great-great-grandchildren, to whom she would send birthday cards with a dollar bill every year.  She always remembered the dates of each of their birthdays, without fail, which was truly amazing.  She had a great mind.  She also had a love for crocheting and enjoyed making each child a keepsake.
She was a homemaker for many years and then worked at the Cambridge State Hospital for several more years, retiring in 1992.  She was a Sunday School teacher at the Byesville Baptist Church at which she was a member for over 50 years.  She was always very involved in her children’s sports, band, and other scholastic events through the years at Byesville and Meadowbrook Schools. She loved the “farm life.”  She grew up on a farm and never lost that love for the outdoors. She was an avid bird lover and fed them religiously and plentifully.  They were definitely spoiled.  She was also very boisterous about “shooing off” the raccoons, squirrels and other animals that would try to steal “my birds’” food.  She was also very passionate about recycling.  (Watch out if you start to throw away a plastic bottle!)
Her greatest love was Jesus.  She had a special love connection with Israel and the Jewish people. She was a bible scholar who had a desire to share her knowledge with anyone around her.  She had a dream to start a bible study at her new home at Astoria, but that was not God’s plan, as He took her home.
Shirley enjoyed her Reds baseball and Buckeye football, but she will enjoy much more telling one of her l-o-n-g stories to anyone who will listen in her new heavenly home.

Departed: 06/25/2023 (Senecaville)
Obituary Preview: Phillip Eugene Kidwell, 67, passed away peacefully in his home on Sunday (June 25, 2023) after a brief illness.
Gene was raised by John Fitzgerald and Betty Illene Kidwell, whom he adored, in Hilliard with his brothers John and Richard, and his sisters Mary and Ruth. Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online, or in a funeral home's website to inform friends, family, and acquaintances of the deceased's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to share the news of a loved one's passing, provide information about their life, and offer a sense of closure for those who are grieving. They also help to notify people of funeral or memorial service arrangements and allow others to pay their respects.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The responsibility of writing an obituary usually falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or a professional obituary writer may assist with the writing process.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the deceased's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. You may also include information about their personality, interests, or accomplishments that made them unique.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Longer obituaries may be more suitable for online platforms or memorial websites.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more meaningful to readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and any specific requirements they may have. You may need to provide the written obituary, payment information, and any accompanying photos.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as a way to reflect on their life and legacy. This can also help alleviate the burden on their loved ones during a difficult time.

Is it necessary to include all family members in an obituary?

No, it's not necessary to include every single family member in an obituary. Typically, you'll want to mention immediate family members such as spouses, children, grandchildren, parents, and siblings. You may also choose to include close relatives or friends who played a significant role in the deceased's life.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, word count, and any additional features such as photos or online links. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to $1,000 or more for print publication.

Can I publish an obituary online for free?

How long will an online obituary remain available?

The duration of an online obituary's availability varies depending on the platform. Some websites may keep the obituary active indefinitely, while others may remove it after a certain period of time (e.g., 30 days).

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's difficult or impossible to make changes to a printed obituary once it's been published. However, online obituaries can often be edited or updated by the original poster or administrator.

What if I need to correct an error in an obituary?

If the deceased had sensitive information they wished to keep private (e.g., medical conditions), it's best to respect their wishes and avoid including this information in the obituary.
