Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It is usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They help to notify others of the person's passing, share details about their life, and provide information about funeral services or memorial events.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend of the deceased writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with writing the obituary. The writer should have personal knowledge of the deceased and be able to provide accurate and meaningful information.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral services, memorial contributions, or other ways to pay tribute to the deceased.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Typically, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Longer obituaries may be more suitable for online platforms or memorial websites.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only the basic facts such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that provides a biography and other relevant information about the deceased.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can help to personalize the tribute and make it more meaningful for those who knew the deceased.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. Some newspapers may have online submission forms or email addresses where you can send the obituary.

Can I write an obituary for someone who died a long time ago?

Yes, it's never too late to write an obituary for someone who has passed away. You can publish it in a local newspaper or online platform, or create a memorial page on a website or social media platform.

What if I'm not comfortable writing an obituary myself?

If you're struggling to write an obituary or need assistance, consider asking a friend or family member for help. Alternatively, many funeral homes offer obituary writing services or can recommend a professional writer.

Can I include quotes or poems in an obituary?

Yes, including quotes or poems that were meaningful to the deceased can add a personal touch to the obituary. Just be sure to keep them concise and relevant to the person's life.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive details about the deceased's life or circumstances surrounding their death, it's best to exercise discretion when deciding what to include in the obituary. Consult with family members or close friends before publishing any potentially sensitive information.

Can I include information about charitable donations in an obituary?

Yes, many families choose to include information about charitable donations in lieu of flowers in the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased and support a cause they cared about.

What if I need to make changes to an already published obituary?

Contact the publication or platform where the obituary was published and request corrections or updates. Be prepared to provide documentation supporting any changes.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The publication timeline varies depending on the newspaper or platform. Online platforms may publish immediately, while print newspapers may take several days or weeks.

Can I republish an obituary at a later date?

Yes, you can republish an obituary on significant dates such as birthdays or anniversaries of the person's passing. This can be a meaningful way to continue honoring their memory.

Are there any specific formatting requirements for an obituary?

Check with the publication or platform for specific guidelines on formatting, font styles, and word count. Some may have strict requirements, while others may offer more flexibility.

How do I ensure accuracy in an obituary?

What if I'm unsure about what to say in an obituary?

Talk to family members, friends, or colleagues who knew the deceased well. They may be able to provide valuable insights and suggestions for crafting a meaningful tribute.

Can I use humor in an obituary?
