She was an avid reader and loved history and a wide range of literature.  She traveled to many countries and immersed herself in cultural experiences.  She was most often seen right here in NE Ohio riding her bicycle with her husband along the Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail. Much of her life was dedicated to her two daughters (Julia and Anne) and her three grandchildren.  Daughter Julia Rea Bianchi, her husband David and grandson Trent. Daughter Anne Marie Adams, her husband Alan and grandchildren Reid and Sarah (Piper).  She was a keen listener, an excellent communicator and always offered a word of encouragement, wisdom and or humor to her family.  She was a loving and gracious mother and grandmother, cherished and adored by all.  The grandchildren fondly recall the fun she brought as their “mimi” from late-night root beer floats to walks in the woods to traveling by plane to be present for a school play.
She is also survived by her loving brother William H. Victor Jr, his wife Bonnie and nephew Brandon; and niece Lisa.
Myrna would want to be remembered as gracious and kind.  She took the time to listen to the many people who crossed her daily path with empathy and words of encouragement.  She truly had a warm and generous heart and tried to be the best person she could be on a daily basis.  She lived her life with honor, grace, reverence, integrity and joy.

Departed: 04/03/2022 (Akron)
Obituary Preview: Earl Hickey, 77, of Akron Ohio, liked to say, “I’m married. A quick and painless death is not in my future.” But alas, Earl passed fairly quickly on Sunday, April 3, 2022, after a recent diagnosis of Lymphoma. Earl was born on May 18, 1944, to William Hickey and Margaret Tatar Hickey in Cleveland, Ohio, where he ran with the Swoope brothers and was a model teenager (ahem). According to Earl, he and Barbara “were married for 10 wonderful years.”
Earl is survived by Barbara (his wife of 54 wonderful years), his son, Michael Hickey (Christine), daughter, Melissa Lewis (Sage) and grandchildren, Alexandra and Indiana.
Earl loved cars and loved driving even more, which is part of why he loved his career as a traveling sales engineer for U.S. Steel, Cambridge Wire Cloth, and Intralox. He was a natural at sales -- he could brighten your day with an in-depth conversation and make you laugh with a corny one liner. Earl took meticulous care of his own vehicles, but was best known for restoring and adoring his 1968 VW Beetle convertible and showing her off at car shows. Earl loved to sail, waterski and wakeboard with his son Mike on Lake Chautauqua. He loved traveling with Barb, petting golden retrievers, sitting in the sun, grilling steaks, and learning about WWII. He was incredibly generous with his family. Earl will be missed.

Bruce Kahrs Bain - August 05, 1931 - March 15, 2022

Departed: 03/15/2022 (Akron)
Obituary Preview: Bruce Kahrs Bain, active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, successful businessman, and avid fly-fisherman, died on March 15 at his home in Akron, with his wife of 70 years at his side.  He was 90 years old.
Mr. Bain came to Akron in 1952, after graduating from Yale University with a Degree in Engineering, to marry his wife, partner, and love, Julia Enyart.  Born and raised in Amherst, MA, Mr. Bain quickly adopted the Mid-western warmth that imbued everything he did and everyone that he touched throughout his life.
Upon arriving in Akron, Bain worked on the Goodyear Inflatoplane project, an inflatable experimental aircraft made by the Goodyear Aircraft Company.  While never commercially viable, the plane did meet its design objectives, a point of pride that Mr. Bain would bring with him to his model airplane building, which was a life-long hobby.
Always with at least one model airplane under construction, and one ready for flight, Bain spent hours on the flying field, honing the design of his aircraft and his flying skills with ever more complicated aerial tricks and turns.  With children, grandchildren, and finally great-grandchildren in tow, he never offered more than a flinch when handing the controls over to his proteges, certain in the knowledge that only matchsticks would accompany them home.
Mr. Bain worked at The Bonnot Company for most of his professional career, first, with his father-in-law, and then, as owner, purchasing the company in the 1980’s.  Bain’s philosophy at the company was, “the customer is your partner.”  The company’s test room was made available as a service to customers, allowing the Bonnot team to collaborate on function and design of the complex extruding machines which they built.  Bain would attribute the company’s success to this model. Customers included Purina, Frito-Lay, and Lifesavers, among other multi-national corporations.
His passion for business brought him out of retirement in the 2000’s to purchase Flexcut Tool Company, a manufacturer of artisan knives.  He would say that his son, who ran the company, made the work rewarding and kept him young. He maintained a desk in the office until the day he died.
The Church centered Bain throughout his life.  With his wife Julia, he was one of the longest serving members of Westminster Presbyterian Church, serving in leadership roles through the tenure of many pastors, giving of his time, energy, and spirituality to a growing congregation. Together with Julia and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Staiger, he established the Margaret C. Enyart Memorial Music Fund, to promise the gift of music to the heavens for generations to come.
But above all else, was Mr. Bain’s family.  Blessed with his life-long love and wife of 70 years, Julia; five children, Stephen, Bruce, George, Margaret, and Anne and their spouses, Jennifer, Arla, Maureen, Michael, and Terry; twenty-one grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, family was the treasure that brought joy, happiness, humor, solace, and comfort throughout his 90 years.  He traveled around the world with Julia. He spent summers teaching his grandchildren how to fish on his beloved Spofford Lake.  He tolerated high school parties for his sons and liberal edicts from his daughters. He built patriotic floats for the Fairlawn Heights 4th of July Parades year after year and cooked hamburgers over the fire for the 2nd Sunday in October Picnic for 50 years.  The love of his family and from his family filled his every moment until the day he died.  As he always promised himself it would.
This is the legacy that he leaves.  Exceptionally close, Bain’s family recently gathered together for Julia and his 90th birthdays, as they have throughout his life, to celebrate the love that he fostered, the care and understanding that he taught by example, and the joy that is a life well-lived.
Memorial Service will be held 11:30 A.M. MONDAY March 21 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1250 W. Exchange Street Akron, OH 44313, with Pastor David Aber officiating. Private interment at Rose Hill Burial Park. Contributions in honor of Bruce Bain’s extraordinary life may be made to the Margaret C. Enyart Memorial Music Fund at Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Patricia Irene Spychalski - March 17, 1936 - March 13, 2022

Departed: 03/13/2022 (Akron)
Obituary Preview: Patricia Irene Spychalski, of Copley and formerly of Bay City, Michigan, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2022 after a long battle with dementia.
Pat was born on March 17, 1936 in Toledo, Ohio to the late Leo and Irene Blake. The family moved to Bay City a few years later, where they became life-long residents. On June 9, 1962 she married Joseph Spychalski. Pat and Joe loved Bay City; however, in 2016 it became necessary for them to relocate to Akron, Ohio near their daughter. Pat was preceded in death by her parents and her daughter, Diane Spychalski. She is survived by her loving husband Joseph Spychalski, daughter Sandra (Brian) Basler all of Copley; sons Daniel Spychalski of Bay City MI and Peter (Eun) Spychalski of Warwick NY; her brother William Blake of Madison Heights MI; and her sister-in-law Elaine Gottlieber (Spychalski) of Bay City MI. Joe and Pat (or “Patsy”, as she was affectionately known by her husband) grew up together, just one house apart. Pat and Elaine did the girlfriend stuff - listening to all the popular tunes on the front porch in the summer, roller skating, and going to the movies. There were rumors of snowball fights, with Pat vowing revenge on Joey (Joe) and her brother Bill.
At Elaine’s wedding reception, Patsy offered to teach Joey to slow dance. Friendship turned to love and they were married. Pat and Joe became deeply interested in what the Bible really teaches compared to commonly held beliefs, so they started to study the Bible with Jehovah’s Witnesses. Together they learned that the Bible answered the most important questions in life. This knowledge helped them endure the death of their daughter, to raise their other children with sound moral values, and how to be truly happy.
They were both baptized as Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1967 and continued to make their relationship with their God Jehovah (Psalm 83:18) the first thing in their lives. This provided them with the tools needed to give their children a warm and happy upbringing. Bible meetings, assemblies and conventions with her husband and children were an integral part of Pat’s life. She was an avid student of the Bible, reading it daily until she could no longer make sense of the words. But those words were in her heart. Through good and not so good times, the focus was on love - love of God and family and neighbor. Pat enjoyed sharing with others the Bible’s message and did so until she could no longer speak. She had the privilege of studying the Bible with her sister-in-law Elaine and experience the joy of seeing Elaine dedicate her life to do God’s will.  Pat loved being a mom, spending lots of time with her children reading to them, playing board and card games, and going on bike rides. She loved watching musicals, classic movies and I Love Lucy with her daughter. Pat and Joe enjoyed watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune in the evening and listening to music together. Pat enjoyed all types of music, classical, pop, rock-n-roll and many more genres. She would play the radio all day long and could whistle beautifully to almost any tune. She loved to sing and even tried her hand at playing the organ.
When she had moments of clarity, she would mention Jehovah and her love for the brothers and sisters in her congregation. Pat loved her friends dearly. She would go on walks with Connie and concerts in the park too, along with Josephine, Betty and more. Pat and Joe often went to lunch after the Sunday Bible meeting with Roberta, Betty, Sally and others. Many happy days in the door-to-door ministry with those friends as well as Linda, Maryanne, Diane, Donna and Becky to name just a few. She loved her daughter’s closest friends Darla and Vicki, often viewing them her as “kids”. Then there’s the laugh. Pat had a very unique laugh, loud and contagious! It brought joy and a smile to everyone’s face. Pat’s faith in the Bible’s promises was unshakable. She firmly believed in all of the wonderful things our loving Heavenly Father has in store for the future. That promise from God is soon to be fulfilled. The earth will be restored to a beautiful paradise (Psalm 37:11, 29) and the dead will be brought back to life in full health (John 5:28, 29). Of course, all of this has been made possible by our loving God by means of the ransom sacrifice of his dear son Jesus. We look forward to that time. (Please see www.jw.org for further information).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information for those who want to pay their respects. They help to notify people of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and provide an opportunity for loved ones to share memories and condolences.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased. However, it can also be written by a funeral home or a professional obituary writer. The writer should have a good understanding of the person's life, accomplishments, and personality to create a meaningful and accurate tribute.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, charitable donations in lieu of flowers, and any other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Generally, it's recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important information. Aim for around 150-200 words, but some publications may allow longer or shorter obituaries.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and some newspapers allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging for readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to ask about their submission process and requirements. They may have specific guidelines for formatting, word count, and deadlines. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment (if required) for publication.

Can I publish an obituary online only?

Absolutely! Online obituary platforms have become increasingly popular in recent years. These websites allow you to create and publish an obituary quickly and easily, often with more flexibility in terms of content and design than traditional newspapers.

Is there a cost associated with publishing an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication or online platform. Some newspapers charge by the word or line, while others offer package deals or flat fees. Online platforms may offer free or paid options with varying levels of features and services.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The publication timeline for an obituary depends on the newspaper's schedule and deadlines. Typically, it takes 1-2 days for an obituary to be published in print, while online platforms can publish immediately after submission.

Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

It may be possible to make corrections or updates to an obituary after publication, but this depends on the publication's policies. Online platforms may allow easier editing and revisions than print newspapers.

What is a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only the most basic information such as name, age, date of birth and death, and funeral service details. It's often used when a full obituary is not desired or feasible.

What is the difference between an obituary and a eulogy?

An obituary is a written notice announcing the death of a person, while a eulogy is a speech or written tribute delivered at a funeral or memorial service to celebrate the person's life and legacy.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes! Some people choose to write their own obituary as a way to control how they're remembered and ensure accuracy. This can be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on one's life accomplishments and values.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or genealogy websites that specialize in historical records. Local libraries or genealogical societies may also have access to archived newspapers or microfilm copies.

Can I use social media to share an obituary?

Absolutely! Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter can be effective ways to share an obituary with a wider audience. You can also use online memorial pages or tribute websites specifically designed for sharing condolences and memories.

What is an online memorial page?

An online memorial page is a digital space where friends and family can share memories, photos, videos, and condolences for the deceased. These pages often remain active for years after the initial posting.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes! Including meaningful quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and personality to an obituary. Just be sure to verify copyright permissions if necessary.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an obituary?

If you notice mistakes in an already-published obituary, contact the publication or online platform immediately to request corrections. Be prepared to provide documentation supporting the corrections.

Can I include charitable donation information in an obituary?

Yes! Many families choose to suggest charitable donations in lieu of flowers as a way to honor their loved one's memory and support a meaningful cause.

How do I write a condolence message in response to an obituary?

A heartfelt condolence message should express sympathy for the loss and acknowledge the deceased person's impact on your life. Keep it sincere, respectful, and brief – aim for 1-2 sentences at most.

What is the purpose of an obituary archive?

An obituary archive is a collection of past obituaries that provides valuable resources for genealogists, researchers, and individuals seeking information about their ancestors or local history.

Can I republish an old obituary on its anniversary?

Yes! Republishing an old obituary on its anniversary can be a meaningful way to remember and honor your loved one on special dates like birthdays or anniversaries of their passing.
