Thomas W Parker - February 12, 1944 - April 25, 2024

Departed: 04/25/2024 (Billings)
Obituary Preview: Tom’s life began February 12, 1944, at the Deaconess Clinic Hospital and ended on April 25, 2024, at the very same site, a journey of 80 years. What a lot of living happened in those years!
Tom was a star athlete at Laurel High School, graduating in 1962. Tom and Peggy Jones started school in the same first grade classroom. Low and behold, they were married on August 24, 1963; a union of 60 years.
His army military service (1966 – 68) happened in Germany and thankfully not in Vietnam. The Cenex refinery was Tom’s workplace for 32 years. During the early years he had numerous second jobs such as hauling cement, trapping, a firewood business and welding at Stormont’s. However, none of these prevented him from experiencing the outdoors whenever and wherever possible. Big game hunting with a rifle and later with a bow, bird hunting, often in below zero temperatures, and fishing from Idaho for steelhead to Alaska for halibut and salmon. His retirement included 11 trips to Alaska, driving 3,000+ miles each way!
How does one describe Tom? He was committed, tough, a perfectionist, concerned, opinionated, a jokester, caring, hardworking, loyal, and giving. His great nephew, Ben; his teenage neighbor, Damien; and three bird hunting brothers Tristan, Kaleb, and Evan were on the receiving end of learning from Tom’s extensive knowledge of fishing, hunting, and life. What joy that brought Tom.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents Walt and Isabel, and his sister, Marilyn.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy, two brothers Bob (Gloria) and Larry (Carol), sister-in-law Karen Jones Crow, and numerous nephews and nieces.
His service will be held in June in Laurel with details to follow.
Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association https://www.lung.org or the charity of your choice.

Departed: 04/25/2024 (Billings)
Obituary Preview: JoAnn Danielson McGrath died Thursday, April 25, 2024 at St. John’s United in Billings, Mont. She was 88.
JoAnn was born in Butte, Mont., on Sept. 4, 1935, to Nephi and Gertrude Danielson. She was the youngest of eight children. She graduated Butte High School in 1954.
JoAnn’s marriage to Robert McGrath of Butte lasted for almost 70 years. In 1972, Bob’s work took them from Butte to Billings. Bob, who lives in Billings still, survives our mother.
Bob and JoAnn were rarely apart; he misses our mom deeply.
JoAnn is also survived by her children and their spouses and partners, Deb McGrath of Laurel, Mont., Karen and John Sullivan of Butte, Janet McGrath and Mitch Marsh of Victorville, Calif., Dan and Janet McGrath of Laurel, and Joe McGrath of Boise, Idaho.
JoAnn is also survived by her grandchildren and their spouses, Sean and Bri Ori McGrath of Kalispell, Mont., Quinn and Maggie McGrath of Seattle, Wash., Allie and Steen Fredrickson of Boise, Carlie McGrath of Big Sky, Mont., Shannon Sullivan and Alex Ramsing of Missoula, Mont., Mary Sullivan of Missoula, and Hunter Robbins and Kathryn Kemp of Boston, Mass. JoAnn is also survived by Fitz McGrath of Seattle, her great-grandson. Fitz was born in February 2024 to Quinn and Maggie, and we all adore him.
JoAnn was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Sally, her parents, and all of her siblings and their spouses, including Gert and Roy Barrett, Shirley Goodall, Lee and Joyce Danielson, and Bill and Helen Danielson. Members of the McGrath clan – her in-laws – also precede JoAnn in death. They include her father- and mother-in-law, Addis and Martha McGrath, and her sisters- and brothers-in-law, Dolores and Addison Bragg, Jack and Lu McGrath, Catherine and Joe Richards, Mickey McGrath, and Pat McGrath.
JoAnn is survived by several nieces and nephews, including Michele “Muggs” Hjulstad, Roy Barrett, Connie Edelen, Mary Anne Flamand, Danette Mattson, Sandy Girdler, and Kathy Willis. JoAnn is also survived by Muggs’ children, Monica and Joe Young, and Mark Pepper. Also surviving are JoAnn’s many loved nieces and nephews from the Bragg, Richards and McGrath clans.
For most of her life, JoAnn stayed at home to raise her children. She was meticulous in the kitchen, and she was the most organized person on earth – literally. Mom enjoyed genealogy, and she loved a good happy hour – often extended due to her stories and laughter. Mom was a Democrat; she followed the news and had strong opinions, which she voiced vociferously.
Arrangements are by Billings Cremation & Burial Services; cremation has taken place. We will soon bring mom home to Butte, where she’ll rest at Holy Cross Cemetery, with her baby Sally. A celebration of life will be held in Butte this fall.
Memorial donations may be made to Friends of the Butte Archives, 17 W. Quartz in Butte, Mont., 59701.

Virginia May Dice - September 01, 1930 - April 17, 2024

Departed: 04/17/2024 (Billings)
Obituary Preview: Virginia "Ginny" May (Smith) Dice age 93, left this beautiful earth on April 17, 2024. She was a bright and shining star to all who knew and met her. Hers truly was a life well lived.
She left behind a wonderful daughter Linda Joan Dice and son-in-law Ronald Syens and sister-in-law Sharon Smith, plus the best Granddog ever, Emma.
Preceding her in passing were her Husband of 58 years Donald Harold Dice, her Mother Joan Sterling Smith, her Father Carl Walter Smith, her Brother Joe (Buzz) Sterling Smith and an infant brother along with numerous other family members.
Ginny was born on September 1, 1930 at Sonnette, Montana. Her father’s family homesteaded the family ranch there in 1912. She attended Bottles school to which she and her brother, “Buzz," commuted on horseback no matter the weather conditions. For her 6th grade, she and her brother relocated for the school year to Bridger, Montana and lived with her Grandmother Ida Mae Sterling. Her Mother stressed the need for a good education and she moved the family to Miles City, Montana so her children could complete their elementary and secondary education. Ginny's father also moved there and started a successful business while still maintaining the family ranch.
While living in Miles City, Ginny completed her high school education and became an accomplished pianist even giving lessons to new beginning students. She performed many solo recitals at the Benson Conservatory of Music during her high school years.
After high school she received a scholarship to Northwestern Teachers College (Northwestern University) in Evanston, Illinois. She received a bachelor's degree in elementary education in three years, and in later years returned to receive a Master’s degree. While attending college she met the love of her life, Don Dice, and they were married on June 7, 1952. They lived in Waukegan, Illinois until they retired. A daughter, Linda, was born in 1956 and added much joy and happiness to their family. The family enjoyed many wonderful times traveling together, especially back to Montana for vacations.
She became a kindergarten teacher and taught at the same school, Lyon School, in the same classroom for 36 years. She was active in the education community and belonged to many advisory boards and organizations. She was President of the Kindergarten Teacher’s Association and Secretary/Treasurer of the Illinois Teacher’s Association. The school district put her in charge of establishing the district's first all day kindergarten program not only for the district, but for the entire state of Illinois. As an attest to her impact on her students, witness the fact that with the advent of Facebook many, of her former students posted thanks and their gratitude for all she meant to them over the years.
After Don and she retired they decided, after some 40 odd years, to return to her roots in Montana. They became part owners of the family ranch in Sonnette, Montana, aptly named the Ginn-Joe Ranch after her brother and her. Their return was a labor of love and they relished their years there by building a permanent home and restoring the property into a beautiful historic area. If you ever had the occasion to visit you could see some Montana ranching history displayed over the entire property. Ginny loved decorating her home, inside and out.
They also managed to travel to some interesting places such as Central America, the Mediterranean and Europe. They moved to Billings in 2010 and sold the ranch to a neighboring rancher, who promised to keep the family's name on the entry gate. Shortly after moving to Billings in 2010, Don passed away and Ginny continued to live at Sweet Water Retirement Community until moving two years later to Aspen View where she remained until her passing. She has many fond memories of the people she met and spent time with at these retirement communities. During her remaining years she was able to travel with Linda and Ron to Africa, a place her Mother always wanted to visit, and Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. She told us while on a chase through the bush after a pack of wild dogs in Botswana that she, at 85 was having the "time of my life.”
Her final years were spent dealing with various injuries and medical issues which she was able to manage and live with until her body finally gave out and she passed away peacefully at Billings Clinic.
No memorial service will be held per Ginny's request. Her ashes, along with those of her husband Don, will be spread together on the family ranch at a later date.
Memorials may be made to Shriner’s Hospital for Children.

She was the fifth of six children, with siblings Dwight, Gloria, Ruby, Wendal, and Richard. The family lived in Lambert, later moving to Marsh, Montana, where theirs was the only non-German family in the small town of German-Russian immigrants. For high school, Georgia commuted by train once a week into Glendive, graduating from high school in 1946. They later lived in Spokane and Butte before settling in Billings, eventually having four children, James, Terry, Denny, and Kathy. Kathy was notable as the first girl in several generations of the Knapp family.
Georgia was kept busy raising her children and with many interests and hobbies, especially sewing. Kenny and Georgia joined the Church of Christ through interactions with good friends Bob and Alice Treat, and were active in church and church activities for the rest of their lives. Karen Richter - August 25, 1957 - April 03, 2024

Departed: 04/03/2024 (Billings)
Obituary Preview: Karen Richter, (67), of Billings, Montana, passed away on April 3rd, 2024, at 12:15 pm with her family by her side.
Karen grew up in Glasgow, MT. She eventually moved to Missoula, MT where she met the love of her life, Thomas Richter. In her long career with Montana Rail Link, from 1978 to 1995, she proved that not only could a woman do this job but could do it better. Karen made that clear when she started work as a federal railroad inspector, working for the government until 2005 when she was diagnosed with cancer for the first time in her life. Against all odds, she was able to beat her terminal diagnosis with the help of Mayo Clinic, stem cell transplants, and the support of her family. Thanks to that she was given another 15 years. Sadly, on February 17th, 2023, she was again diagnosed with cancer and given less than a year to live. With the support of her husband and children she survived 1 year and 2 months. In that time, she made sure to get out almost every day to enjoy life, eat out, shop for others, and spend as much time as she could with her children that were her everything. She also loved painting and gardening. Karen managed to check Disney World off her bucket list by flying to Florida with some of her children and grandchildren. Karen was an incredibly strong woman with an incredible will to live and she lived as full a life as she could.
Karen is survived by her husband, Thomas Richter, her children, Darcy Richter, Lee Wilber, James Wilber, Rachelle Clark, her mother, Marylin Wetzel, and her siblings Greg Wetzel, and Dawn Sletten.
She has now joined her father, Raymond Wetzel in heaven.
Karen’s funeral service and celebration of life will be held on April 20, 2024 (her favorite date) at 2 pm., at Billings Cremation and Burial Services, 29 8th St. W. Billings, MT 59101.

Sharon P Allard - May 06, 1941 - March 30, 2024

Departed: 03/30/2024 (Billings)
Obituary Preview: Major (retired) Sharon Pauline Allard, age 82, passed away on Saturday, March 30, 2024 surrounded by family. Sharon was born on May 6, 1941, in Glendive, Montana, to Lloyd and Ruth (Mitchell) Allard in the Watson Maternity Hospital (a house on River Avenue that Sharon later owned). She grew up on Allard Ranch on Burns Creek north of Glendive, attended Burns Creek School through the 8th grade, entered Dawson County High School and then graduated from Montana State University.
Sharon joined the U.S. Air Force as a registered nurse in 1968. She served stateside at bases in Missouri, Colorado, Arizona, Indiana, New Hampshire, Idaho, and Montana. She was assigned to overseas bases in Taiwan and Turkey. It was during the time she was assigned to Taiwan that she was a flight nurse to Vietnam in a C130 transport to assist with the transfer of wounded soldiers to the hospital in Taiwan. Sharon was honorably discharged from the Air Force with the rank of Major in 1988. Sharon didn’t like to talk about her military service, so knowledge of that time is limited.
Sharon returned to Glendive and worked in Women’s Health at the Glendive Medical Center in Glendive. Later she taught nursing at the Miles City Community College. She moved from Glendive to Billings in 2011.
A willing and very able worker with ranch chores, Sharon also had a green thumb with her vegetable and flower gardens. Much to the chagrin of family, she was the first to note if someone didn’t have green vegetables on their dinner plate, and she was famous for her homemade bread. Sharon was an accomplished quilter and knitter; she loved football and her favorite team was the Kansas City Chiefs. Sharon was a proud member of the “Graduates”, a local group of retired ladies. We don’t know if Sharon was good at Bunko, but she really enjoyed searching for the perfect dessert recipe to serve when it was her turn to be hostess. She was fond of card and board games with family. Sharon never married and had no children. She is survived by her brother, Gene Allard (Bobi), sister-in-law Barb Allard (Richard), and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd and Ruth Allard, one brother, Richard Allard and two nephews.
The family requests that those wanting to donate to a cause in Sharon’s name might consider the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Billings. Private graveside military services will take place 11:00am Tuesday, April 9, 2024 at Yellowstone National Cemetery, 55 Buffalo Trail, Laurel, MT  59044. Billings Cremation and Burial Services is in charge of arrangements.

He will lovingly be remembered by his children; Bill (Kay) Whittle of Cooke City, MT, Tami (Chris) Parker of Clear Lake, SD, Jamie Whittle of Watertown, SD, and Ryleigh (Chad) Reesen of Omaha, NE. Dennis spent much of his early adulthood when his children were young in Wyoming, which nurtured his growing love for the West and the mountains. Beginning around 1990 Dennis moved to Colorado, where he lived and worked for many years and enjoyed spending time on his horses exploring the backcountry, hunting, and fishing. Dennis continued his exploration of Colorado in his Maule Airplane after becoming a pilot.
A career change brought Dennis to Montana, where he spent the balance of his life truck driving and exploring Montana. Dennis continued to hunt and fish, but fishing was clearly what he loved most and after discovering Fort Peck, it quickly became home. Although he spent a lot of time hunting and fishing with his son Bill, his constant fishing companion was Hondo, his chocolate lab. Many of the people Dennis held dear in his life no doubt can still hear him say, “All I have to do is say, Hondo are you ready to go fishing?” and Hondo would run to the door, ready to go.
A Celebration of Dennis’s Life will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at the home of his daughter, Tami Parker from 2 to 4 PM, 18638 469th Avenue, Clear Lake, SD 57226.

On October 4, 1952, Don married Gloria Lorraine Case. Their marriage began while he was serving in the military as a 3rd Class Petty Officer. During the Korean War, he was a Boiler Tender on the U.S.S. Arnold J. Isbell DD 869. When asked about his active duty in the Navy, Don could always recall the precise timeframe “three years, ten months and twenty days”! After honorable discharge, he made his way back to Wyoming.
Don farmed the same land that his grandfather and father homesteaded nearly a century earlier in 1928. He raised cattle, horses, barley, alfalfa, and sugar beets. He and his wife, Gloria, also raised three children (Lori, Scott, Jodi) on West Willwood. Prior to retiring, Don worked a few years at Park County Weed & Pest. He preferred being outdoors, and enjoyed campfire cookouts, hunting, fishing, and horseback riding. Don is survived by daughter Jodi and husband Shawn of Billings, son-in-law (Randy Lohrenz) of Powell and daughter-in-law (Becky Christensen) of Sheridan. One of his greatest joys were his grandchildren; Lorissa Hoppe (Norm), Robbi Welch (Yancy), Jami Shatto (Tyson), Erika Byrne and Carly Byrne. Grandpa always initiated memorable bear hugs and strong handshakes. He also loved to laugh and tease with several great grandchildren. He was appreciative of the care provided by Billings Rehab & Nursing Center and realized how fortunate it was to have a special ‘angel on earth’ watch over him every single work day. Don was preceded in death by his wife (Gloria), eldest daughter (Lori), son (Scott) as well as his parents (Art & Audrey) and brothers (Ed & Rod).

His life was one of exploration, simplicity and kindness, and of a generosity that touched the lives of those around him. Steve was a friend to those he knew well and to those who he just met. To ensure accuracy, gather information from multiple sources, including family members, friends, and colleagues. Verify facts whenever possible, and don't hesitate to ask questions if you're unsure about specific details.

What if I'm struggling emotionally while writing an obituary?

Writing an obituary can be a challenging task emotionally. Don't hesitate to seek support from friends, family, or professionals if you're struggling. Take breaks when needed, and remember that it's okay to show emotion during this difficult time.

Can I write multiple versions of an obituary for different audiences?

Yes! You may want to create separate versions of the obituary tailored for different groups, such as close family members versus casual acquaintances. This allows you to share specific memories or details with each audience appropriately.
