Departed: 04/13/2024 (Phoenix)
Obituary Preview: As humans, we live our lives forward and understand them by looking backwards. For the Joachim family, each of us knows the importance of the day Richard and Carol met on the steps outside of the Delta Gamma house at the University of Arizona. It was a serendipitous and fateful moment that would define not only their lives, but all of ours. In Richard’s own words, “After I met Carol, I always thought that every move I made was an act of God directing me to her.”
And it’s only natural that it would be Carol lending a helping hand when it was time for Richard to depart this world. In the days preceding his passing, he stated that Carol was coming for him. On April 13, 2024, Richard Elon Joachim was called to heaven surrounded by the love of his family who take solace in knowing Richard and Carol are together again.
He was born on August 1, 1933 to Joseph and Elizabeth Joachim in Detroit, Michigan. He graduated from the University of Arizona where he met the love of his life, Carol. Their first encounter laid the foundation for 65 years of marriage and a family that Richard worked all his life to love and support. Together, Richard and Carol raised five children: Lori, Leslie, Richard, Linda, and Bill. They have eight grandchildren: Bandy, Jordan, Kelli, Jessica, Natalie, Kelsey, Tanis, and Jones. And nine great-grandchildren: Karli, Samantha, Alyssa, Mikayla, Beckett, Collins, Taylor, Ruby, and Rhodes.
Richard grew up in Michigan with his two brothers Joe and Gary. Shortly after graduating from Plymouth High School, he boarded a bus to Arizona where he would spend the rest of his life. Richard spent his career as a Mechanical Engineer and worked in the industry for well over 60 years. He was a dedicated father and grandfather, who coached softball, basketball, and planned wonderful family vacations making splendid memories. He gave graciously and endlessly to his family and fought hard to live 90 plus years. He is a man of character who will be greatly missed but always around in spirit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It serves as a way to share the news of a loved one's passing with friends, family, and community.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries are important because they provide a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also serving as a notification to those who may not have been aware of their passing. They can also be a valuable resource for genealogists and historians.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The responsibility of writing an obituary usually falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or mortuary may assist in writing the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary should include the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), hobbies, interests, and surviving family members.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform it will be published on. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Is there a cost associated with publishing an obituary?

In most cases, yes. The cost of publishing an obituary can vary widely depending on the publication or platform, as well as the length and content of the obituary.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it is becoming increasingly popular for people to write their own obituaries before they pass away. This can ensure that their life story is told in their own words and voice.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides a more detailed account of the person's life.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes, including meaningful quotes or lyrics can add a personal touch to an obituary and help capture the essence of the deceased.

How do I handle sensitive or private information in an obituary?

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publishing an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Online platforms often publish immediately, while print newspapers may take several days or even weeks.

Can I make corrections to an already published obituary?
