Marilyn May Olson - May 10, 1932 - April 10, 2024

Departed: 04/10/2024 (Peshtigo)
Obituary Preview: Marilyn May (Mansfield) Olson was born on May 10, 1932 to Wilhemina (Young) and Frank Mansfield in Blue Island, IL. The family remained in Blue Island through her 8th grade year, when her parents found a post-war-era opportunity to own and operate "Frank's Bar and Pool" and bowling alley in Peshtigo, WI.
The youngest of four children, Marilyn said good-bye to her two sisters (Jean and Shirley), but her brother Frank (Bud) also joined his parents as they made the transition. She often recalled, the first summer in Peshtigo felt long and lonely until she began to meet her new high school classmates. Marilyn was loyal; and many of the first people to extend the hand of friendship remained dear to her for the rest of their lives.
Soon after graduating Peshtigo High School, Marilyn married another “new-comer” Wallace (Wally) Olson. She joined her husband and in-laws in their homestead’s original cabin. They were married for 29 years and had eight children together. Marilyn spoke of a “steep learning curve” on many aspects of her new rural life. In addition to working side-by-side to build their family, farm, and orchard, they were also building their unique “modern” concrete farmhouse. Marilyn had good teachers, and was also remarkably well self-taught. Speaking from experience, she would quip, “If you can read, you can cook.” And she recommended applying that
principal to many tasks.
Upon moving into the larger farmhouse, both the farm and Marilyn’s cooking often became the center of massive holiday gatherings that included many facets of extended family and friends. Family was important to her, and in order to see them, she also punctuated rural home life with city visits. Often, an outing would include an evening of bowling. Marilyn proclaimed she was a terrible bowler. She was an excellent scorekeeper, and encourage all her children to enjoy the sport regardless of their varying degrees of talent. She also seized opportunities to share tours of libraries, museums and historic
sites with her children. Whenever possible, everyone returned home with a book – for Marilyn it was usually a cook book or a historical romance novel. Out of both ethic and need, Marilyn worked in the home, farm and intermittently, one or two additional jobs simultaneously. Eventually, the strain of juggling farm life, a home perpetually under construction, and multiple jobs took a toll. When their marriage ended, Marilyn chose to leave the farm and return to living in the City of Peshtigo. She continued to raise her youngest children while working most notably
for Milwaukee Glove Company during the week, and occasional weekends at the local Citgo Gas Station. Loyal and romantic, Marilyn also chose not to pursue marriage again. She did pursue other interests in her retirement. While she claimed she “wasn’t a joiner” she did emphasize it was important to take her turn to engage with the community. She volunteered for her high school class reunion group, two Lutheran churches, a local chapter of the Red Hats, and was a frequent Museum Guide with the Peshtigo Historical Society for many years. When she felt these roles had run their course, she continued to indulge in romance novels, and spend time reading bedtime stories with grandchildren near and far
when ever possible.
Marilyn turned the page of her book, and began her epilogue on April 10, 2024. Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents (Wilhemina (Minnie) and Frank Mansfield); her eldest sister Jean (Ben) Mansfield Wilson; her brother Frank (Marion) Mansfield; three infant children (William,
Nicklaus, and Jean Olson), and one grandchild (Kasidhe Olson).
She is survived by her sister Shirley (Jim) Wilson; five children, Christine Olson (Lloyd) Vogds; Deanna Diercks (Dennis) Kjos; Wallace (Nancy Tornow) Olson Jr; Frank Olson; Rebecca Olson (Steven) Haak; nine grandchildren, eleven greatgrandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews across the country.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to Marilyn’s wonderful neighbors and caregivers that allowed her to remain in her home for as long as possible. In particular, to Pam who regularly went above and beyond for her.
Gratitude is also shared with the staff of Rennes East and Unity Hospice.
In honor of Marilyn’s love of history, please consider a contribution to the Peshtigo Historical Society.
Visitation will be held at Berth & Rosenthal Funeral Home 10:00 AM to Noon on Saturday, April 20, 2024 with service to immediately follow.

Charles Matthew Valitchka - April 06, 1948 - March 02, 2024

Departed: 03/02/2024 (Peshtigo)
Obituary Preview: Charles Valitchka Sr., 75 of Peshtigo passed away on Saturday, March 2, 2024, with family be his side.
Born April 6, 1948, to John “Jack” and Naomi (Pennell) Valitchka in Green Bay, Wisconsin, he married Kathryn Golden in L’Anse, Michigan on September 25, 1971.
He worked many jobs in his life from Karguard, Steenberg Homes, Montex and finally retiring from Fincanteri Marinette Marine in 2018. However, the job he had the most stories about was from his years working for Skerbeck Carnival. It was at this job that he met Kathryn. Charles served his country as a SeaBee in the Navy Reserve and also took time to volunteer for Town of Peshtigo fire department and for the rescue squad.
Charles never met a stranger and would talk to everyone that crossed his path. He truly had the gift of gab. There was no need to hold up your end of the conversation because he wouldn’t let you get a word in if you tried. He was a lover of woodworking and tinkering with the yard and yard equipment. He’d leave his son and sons-in-law shaking their heads wondering what he was thinking when it came to his many “improvements”.
His children will fondly remember him as the man who would fish for hours as they caught one bullhead after another and patiently remove every one and bait the hook again and again for them, bringing home gumballs and leaving them in his lunch box for them to find on Saturday morning when they woke, taking the sandwich to work they made for him and laughing about how they didn’t know the difference between lettuce and cabbage and not murdering his son for cutting down his beloved maple tree with a hatchet.
Charles is survived by his children: Bridget (Jim) Schaetz, Marria Valitchka, both of Peshtigo, Jenny (Derek) Watson of Porterfield, and Charles (Angie) Valitchka of Marinette; grandchildren, Olivia Schaetz, Tyler (Mallory) Schaetz, James Schaetz, Anthony Schaetz, Dustin Schaetz, Brandy (Hunter) Kuffel, Karissa Valitchka, Jacob Watson, Marly Watson, Marissa Graese and Noah Nelson; one great-granddaughter, Maeve Kuffel; and a brother, John (Sue) Valitchka.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathy; and sisters, Mary LaBlanc and AnnDale Serres.
Family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday, March 14th at Berth and Rosenthal Funeral Home from 2:00 pm until time of memorial services at 5:00 pm. Burial with military honors will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, March 15th at Glenwood Memorial Gardens in Marinette.
The family would like to thank Rennes Health Center West and Unity Hospice for their wonderful care and compassion shown to Charles.

We lost our force this week. Nancy (Red) Lee Chaltry went to Heaven very late Monday, February 19th, 2024 after a battle that she decided she would concede to, Cancer. Nancy worked at Badger Paper in Peshtigo for 35 years and after retirement decided she needed to work at least part time. Wanting a position that would keep her strong, she accepted a position working as a custodian at Peshtigo schools where, because of her love for the children, she remained throughout her battle until she could no longer walk. She also received an Associate Degree from NWTC in Marinette.
She was a mom who loved her son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren more than anything on this earth. She was a dedicated and loving sister to 5 siblings and many beloved friends. She was a golfer. She was a hard worker. She lived for God, her family, and her friends. She was an artist who would adorn every holiday and home with a skill matched by few.
Nancy was born to Michael and Eileen (Anderson) Weber December 2, 1951 in Menominee, MI.  She was married to the love of her life, Larry Chaltry, for 32 years until her heart broke when he died in 2014.
She is survived by her son, Larry Zimmerman (Kim) of Howell, Michigan, her grandchildren, Ainsleigh, Macklin, Arden, Charlie and Tommy, her three sisters, Diana (Dr. Edward) Osypowski, Sally Hasenfus, Sylvia (Keith) Casselbury, her brother-in-law, Eugene Hasenfus, her Goddaughter, Sarah Jean Hasenfus and her sisters-in-law, Darlene, Pat, Danita and Vicky. Besides Nancy’s husband and parents, her sister, Natalie Zillmer, brother, Michael Weber, parents-in-law William and Irene (Guber) Chaltry, brothers-in-law, Dr. Richard, Adrian, William and John Chaltry and Dale Nessinger and sister-in-law, Jean predeceased her.
We may have lost our force from this earth - but she will be forever in our hearts. We look forward to seeing her again in Heaven where we believe she is no longer struggling to breathe and is probably playing golf with Larry, Mom and Dad.
Nancy’s family will receive friends on Saturday, March 2nd, 2024 from 9:00 to 11:00 until the time of Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. celebrating her magnificent life at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 5541 Birch Creek Road, Birch Creek, MI.
We would like to thank Father Abraham Mupparathara for visiting Nancy while in the hospital and at home. We would like to thank Nancy's special friends Mary Garrigan, Mary Brey, Iris De Lorme and all of her lifelong friends who meant so much to her. Nancy was given so much love and care from Diana White, Chaplin Timothy Gunderson, Cassie Emmer, Amy Hoida, Clara Longlais and Jasmine Cottelit from Hospice. We would also like to thank Berth & Rosenthal Funeral Home for their caring and professional guidance assisting our family with arrangements. And thank you so much to the children of Peshtigo Elementary. She loved your hand created artwork and cards so much? You all made her so happy.
