Rush Darrell Wilkens - November 22, 1933 - February 25, 2022

Departed: 02/25/2022 (Hartford)
Obituary Preview: A pilot to his very soul who aimed high his entire life, Rush Wilkens took wing on his last earthly flight and stuck the landing on Heaven’s runway on the morning of February 25. One of the most personable men who ever lived, everywhere Rush went he made friends and then engaged them with sharp, witty banter, and his passing should make all those who knew him pause to acknowledge a life well lived.
Born in 1933 along the Mississippi River in Illinois where he was raised by his mother, Ethel Lersch. Passed away in New Berlin after the last of several courageous battles with cancer. Survived by his wife, Lois, daughter, Sandi and grand-daughter, Chu-Chu. Preceded in death by his daughter, Susan (Louis) Gutierrez. Rush spent two years in college in Iowa, playing football on scholarship, before heading off to the military. His college football career was the start of a lifelong interest in athletics, primarily golf and tennis, and an early outlet for his natural competitiveness.
Rush served as an airman in the United States Air Force from 1954 to 1958. During that time he served on the island of Okinawa and in Korea as an electronic communications expert.            After his military service ended, Rush re-entered college at the Milwaukee School of Engineering. He was an Electrical Engineer by trade, an early expert in the integration of computer technology in manufacturing operations, and finished his career mentoring young electrical engineers.
Rush moved to New Berlin in 1958 and set about raising his family with Lois. After a few years, he began serving his community on volunteer boards and commissions, culminating in service as Aldermen for the 5th District from 1996 to 2003, where he also served as President of the Common Council.
Rush was a visionary who was primarily responsible for the development of the Princeton Club, the Westridge Business Park, the retail growth and development of the I-43/Moorland corridor and the New Berlin Library at City Center.
Motivated by his desire to give veterans the honor and recognition they deserve, Rush’s vision and efforts were the primary force in the creation of the New Berlin Veteran’s Memorial which stands today at the corner of Casper Drive and National Avenue as a tribute to all service men and women. In 2016 Rush traveled on an Honor Flight to Washington D.C. and afterward encouraged other veterans to make the same journey.
Rush started keeping a journal about his entire life when his granddaughter was born because he didn’t know if he’d be around to let her get to know him. One line from that journal captures his unique approach to living. “Without regrets, I sometimes wonder about the choices I made and what might have been, but life does not come with an eraser.”
A community feels like a home because somebody took the time to tidy it up a bit. Rush Wilkens was the guy who tidied up New Berlin and we are all better for it, and for those who knew him, better off for that association.

Mary Beth Riesland - November 08, 1951 - January 11, 2022

Departed: 01/11/2022 (Hartford)
Obituary Preview: Mary Beth Riesland of Hartford Wisconsin was called home to the Lord on the morning of January 11, 2022.
Born to Alvin and Lorraine (nee Lohr) Neuenschwander on November 8th, 1951.  Mary Beth was raised in Hartford, Wisconsin where she was adored by her big sister Carol and big brother Bob and found her life-long friend Mary Lee Rieley(nee Black).  Mary Beth’s time in Hartford shaped her commitment to family and friends, her work ethic, many of her hobbies and the cornerstone of her life which was her love of God. Mary Beth was thrilled to return to Hartford in 2016 with a move to Druid Lake. She and her husband of 25 years, Dave Riesland, remodeled Riesland’s Cozy Cottage, while also making time for pontoon rides on their boat Jenny, swimming, floating, kayaking and s’mores at the fire with visitors, family, friends and their grandkids.
Mary Beth always enjoyed being creative.  This started in Hartford writing and performing both plays and variety shows with Mary Lee. Her creativity progressed in life as she enjoyed quilting, crafting, knitting, sewing, scrapbooking, card making, playing piano, guitar, ukulele, cooking, baking and painting.  Many were fortunate to be the recipient of Mary’s creative talents as gifts, but she also used her creative gifts to share God’s love through various children’s music ministries, prayer shawl ministry, and outreach ministry.
While in high school at Wauwatosa West, Mary Beth worked at the Milwaukee Medical Complex for 3 heart surgeons, which resulted in a career calling as a nurse. She earned her Licensed Practical Nurse degree from Kalamazoo Board of Education in 1972, an Associate Degree in Applied Science of Nursing in 1991 from The University of the State of New York and became licensed as a Registered Nurse by the State of Wisconsin in 1992.  Mary Beth’s 45 year career in nursing was spent at Pipp Community Hospital in Plainwell, Mich., Hartford Memorial Hospital, Community Memorial in Menomonee Falls, Aurora Lakeland Medical Center in Elkhorn, and Castle Medical Center in Kailua, Hawaii.  In 1996 Mary obtained her Parish Nurse Certificate from Concordia University in Mequon, WI. In 1998 she was called by the Lord to start a parish Nurse Ministry at Calvary Community Church in Williams Bay, WI. With 900-1100 parishioners. This ministry utilized her years of nursing knowledge to support families at their toughest moments and also to share God’s love through health and wellness education. In this community she became known simply as “Nurse Mary” by all.  Mary was very happy that God provided excellent new leadership for this ministry.
Mary Beth felt very blessed to be introduced to travel as a young girl with trips to Door County, Wisconsin, California & Florida with family. As a mother, she followed this example by loading her three children, Ben, Jeremy and Kristina into the family station wagon to see the United States.  She later also recruited her dear friend Mary Thickens and her children on these adventures as well.   These two week vacations continue to be the starting point for many great family “stories” and all three of her children continue to have a passion for traveling as a way to both enjoy their time with their families and learn about the world around them.  Mary Beth’s life-long friend Mary Lee was a great travel companion as well. The two saw the Bahamas, Maine, Cape Cod, Costa Rica, Spain, England, & South America together—no doubt impacting anyone that encountered them with their love of fun, singing, dancing, and learning about other cultures.
Most notable trips for Mary Beth are the two life changing vacations she’d experience.  The first was a vacation to Arizona where she met her husband Dave, who was also visiting Arizona from Long Beach, CA.  They had much in common, but mostly a complete admiration of each other.  Two years later they were married in 1996 and their adventures continued from there.  Visiting England, Germany, Sweden, France, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Japan, Hong Kong, Israel, Jordan, Turkey, Greece, South Africa, Aruba, and Turks & Caicos.  But then another life changing trip occurred for Mary Beth and Dave when they visited Hawaii in 2004.  They felt they found “their place”. They loved all things Hawaiian: the culture, the food, hiking, rowing, biking, the sunshine & beauty of the islands. Four years after their first visit they made their dreams come true and purchased a condo in Honolulu—a block off the ocean where they built their winter life in Hawaii.  Mary Beth worked as a seasonal nurse at a local hospital and Dave continued to “work from home” and now could quickly grab his binoculars for whale watching from their lanai.  Most importantly Mary Beth and Dave were blessed with many wonderful friendships built over their years in Hawaii as their winter home.
Mary Beth took great joy in her roles as mother and Aunt but for her nothing beat being a grandma figure to her actual grandchildren, her friends’ grandchildren and her great nieces and nephews.  Mary Beth’s love of fun, willingness to play endless hours of games, make endless numbers of special meals, spend endless time in a pool or lake, and engage in all kinds of crafts, make believe and a deep interest and passion for any activity children took on made her a wonderful and very adored Grandma and Aunt Mary.
Because Mary Beth shared God’s love in everything she did and in every role in her life she will be missed but she will continue on through the friends, family and all who have been shaped by this love and kindness.
She is preceded in death by her parents Al and Lorraine Neuenschwander and both of her siblings, Carol Schraufnagel and Robert Neuenschwander.
Mary Beth is survived by her devoted husband, Dave Riesland, her children; son Ben (Sheila) Grannan and their children Sarah and Courtney, son Jeremy (Sarah) Grannan and their children Noah, Matthew, Andrew and Rachel, and daughter Kristina (Rich) Talkowski.
The funeral will be held at Faith Bible Alliance Church W2799 Lehman Rd, Neosho, WI, Monday, January 17, 2022.  Visitation from 9am to 11am, service at 11am officiated by Pastor Chuck Cervenka, interment at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Hartford, WI and reception at church will follow the service. Service will also be live streamed.  See funeral home website for information.
Due to several of our loved ones having health conditions, Mary Beth has requested all who attend wear masks. Memorials may be sent to her beloved church communities—Faith Bible Alliance in Neosho, WI or Calvary Community Church in Williams Bay, WI—or to Compassion International

You could see this through her faith and service in her callings at church. She was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints where she served in many aspects. Suzanne Marie Strowig - December 05, 1953 - December 26, 2021

Departed: 12/26/2021 (Hartford)
Obituary Preview: Suzanne M. Strowig of North Richland Hills, TX, age 68, passed away on December 26, 2021 after enduring a complicated heart surgery in November. She was recuperating from surgery at her sister’s home in Ossining, NY at the time of death. Sue suffered many health problems related to successful cancer treatment in her late 20’s.  Health challenges due to radiation were bravely accepted and did not affect her positive outlook and joy for life. It never defeated her desire and ability to excel in her nursing career.  She proudly earned her BS degree in Nursing from UW Eau Claire in 1976 and later graduated with a MS degree in Nursing from UT Arlington. For more than 40 years she dedicated her life as a clinical research nurse practitioner working with a team improving diabetic treatment at UT Southwestern Medical Center.  Patients and colleagues involved in her research studies became lifelong friends.
Sue loved ballroom dancing.  She enjoyed taking lessons and showing her steps to family.  She also loved to travel and shared that experience with her sister and once with her brother-in-law, notably on a cruise/land tour of Alaska and tour of Germany, Austria while attending a medical conference.
Sue called Dallas her home but remained loyal to her Green Bay Packers and Wisconsin Badgers.  Her fur babies, Ellie, Mollie, Hannah, Scruffy and Sammy were her pride and joy and ate like royalty. She made organic dog treats and fed them fresh meat mixed with rice and vegetables.
Her trips to Wisconsin to celebrate Christmas were always something the family looked forward to.  Her home-made cookies disappeared within a day or two by the resident cookie monsters. Besides decorating the tree, her talent playing the piano accompanied our singing carols which always lifted our spirits.  Sue was so talented musically.  She started playing the accordion at a young age and continued through high school.  She also played flute in the high school band.  Sue will be remembered for her practical eclectic gifts given to the “sisters” who in turn had to guess their function. We will treasure the jewelry she made for the girls at Christmas as well.  She was a whiz at Sudoku, Euchre, Gin Rummy and any other game she played. Few could beat her.
We were so looking forward to her retirement and return to Wisconsin in the summer.   Texas would remain her winter home. That was the plan, but we continue to live in faith that God’s plan was a better one.  May she rest in peace in His merciful care.
Survivors include her siblings Robert Strowig, Cynthia Skopal, Marilyn Genske (Roger) and Jim Strowig (Kim), Nephews and nieces Kevin Gerwels, Craig Strowig, Lori Strowig, David Genske, Marie Walker, Jason Genske and many grand nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
In addition to her parents, Marian and Eugene Strowig, Sue was preceded in death by her sister Janice Gerwels-Huth and brother-in-laws Eugene Skopal and Walter Huth.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a permanent record of a person's life and legacy.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the family of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. In some cases, a friend or colleague may also write an obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral or memorial service arrangements.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the family's preferences. Typically, an obituary ranges from 100 to 500 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?
