Obituary Preview: Diana Karen (Nappi) Kemper, 72, of Berlin, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 3, 2022.  Diana was the wife of her devoted husband, Jeffrey Kemper.  Born in New Britain, a daughter of the late Joseph and Victoria (Caporale) Nappi.
Diana was a graduate of Windsor Locks High School and then attended the University of Connecticut where she earned her degree. Diana was a Project Engineer at Semac Electric in New Britain and was a manager at several restaurants including Chilis in New Britain and Newington.  Di loved golf, kayaking, exploring DC and frequent visits to Disney World, and the Newport Cliff Walk. If there were kids playing, Diana would always be with them. Squirt guns or sleds it didn’t matter. She loved her 2 rescue cats Stormy and Cloudy. Diana was adventurous and got married in a hot air balloon. She invented the annual Great Ravioli Festival to have family over to make raviolis from scratch as a way to pass along some traditions and recipes to the younger generation. She was always thinking of others, always volunteering if anyone needed help or on any community projects. She loved to bake and at Christmas would bake dozens of different cookies to give away. Diana was very strong with the Lord and prayed daily, always to help others. Her battle with cancer lasted over 3 years and she fought valiantly every day. She was a shining example of a very good person and was liked by all who met her. Always seeing the good in people. She will be dearly missed.
Besides her husband she is survived by her sister: Patricia Williams of North Carolina, her brother: Gene Nappi of South Carolina, her 2 nieces, Jennifer and Kristin and numerous cousins. Diana’s favorite charities: Heifer International (provides livestock to poor villages) World Cataract Foundation (curing cataract blindness) Wheelchair Foundation (providing wheel chairs to poor around the world) Hartford Health Care (dept. of Oncology) and St. Paul’s Catholic Church (Kensington CT)
A service and burial will be announced at a later date.

Obituary Preview: James A. Sweden 77, of Kensington passed away on Tuesday, March 29, 2022 after a brief illness. Born in Adena, Ohio a son of the late Alexander and Lillian (Burris) Sweden and a 1962 graduate of Adena High School.  Jim is predeceased by two brothers and two sisters.
Jim met his wife of 56 years, Janet (Faselle) Sweden after moving to Connecticut. He was a tool maker for Faselle Tool Company for 30 years.
Jim is survived by his wife, two sons and daughters-in-law: Eric and (Marianne) Sweden of Raleigh, NC, David and (Kathy) Sweden of Newington one daughter and son-in-law: Cynthia and (Christopher) Lawrence of Wake Forest, NC., three grandchildren: Collin Lawrence, Olivia Sweden and Dayana Sweden and many nieces and nephews.
Friends and family are invited to call on Friday, April 1, 2022, at the Berlin Memorial Funeral Home, 96 Main St., Kensington, from 11:00 to 12:00 Noon.  Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Obituary Preview: Nancy T Karoll, 87 of Berlin passed away peacefully on March 29th 2022. She was the wife of the late Edward Karoll and resided in Berlin since 1956. Nancy was a lifelong gardener,  loved "anything outdoors" and was an outstanding seamstress who enjoyed making clothing and sewing. Nancy was a special education driver for many years in Berlin and enjoyed helping children. She will be missed by all that knew her.  Nancy is survived by her brother Dan Truesdell of Scituate MA;  her son Rollin Karoll and his wife Shari of Berlin, Grandsons Dan Karoll and his wife Sasha of Westbrook CT and Spencer Karoll and fiancé Samantha Bly of Berlin. Burial was held at Maple Cemetery Berlin March 29th.

Obituary Preview: Catherine Marut, 97, of Kensington passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 20 with family by her side.  Catherine was born January 23, 1925 to the late Stanley and Mary (Smuda) Polgroszek and was a life-long resident of Berlin.  She was a waitress at Shuttle Meadow Country Club and a member of St. Paul Catholic Church.  Catherine was an avid gardener who enjoyed flowers and had many beautiful flower gardens around her home.  Above all her greatest joy in life was spending time with her family who she loved dearly. Catherine was a kind, generous soul and will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Catherine leaves behind her children Marcia Lechowicz (Stephen), Deborah Marut and Paul Marut all of Kensington.  Her grandchildren Catherine Sullivan (Brennan), Stephen Lechowicz Jr. (Kimberly), Paul Marut Jr. (Samantha), and Jason Lechowicz (Susan).  Also, her great-grandchildren Maxwell, Kadence, Ryan, Jack, Cara, Sadie, June, and Luke.  Besides her parents she was predeceased by her husband Peter Marut Sr., son Peter Marut Jr., 2 brothers and 4 sisters.
Services will be held Wednesday, March 23 at Berlin Memorial Funeral Home, 96 Main Street, Kensington from 10-11am.  A mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Paul Church, Alling Street, Kensington at 11:30am.  Burial to follow at Maple Cemetery.

Obituary Preview: Dorothy (Gajewski) Swerko, 91, of Berlin, CT, beloved wife of the late Daniel Swerko, died Thursday, February 17, 2022.
Daughter of the late Zygmont and Mary (Maznicki) Gajewski, Dotty was born and raised in Hartford, CT and graduated from Bulkley High School in 1948.  Her first job was working in the tobacco fields when she was a teenager.  After marriage and having children, Dotty became a stay-at-home mom. Her family was always her priority.  She took a job as a cashier at Food Mart when her children were older. As an empty-nester, she worked at Northeast Utilities and retired from the Purchasing Department.
Dotty loved to dance. While single, she attended dances at the Polish National Home in Hartford.  It was there she met her husband of 49 years, Danny. They both were members of the square dance clubs, “Rosetown Squares” of Cromwell and “Bucks & Does” of Berlin for over 25 years.  They attended annual square dance weekends at East Hill Farms in New Hampshire where Dotty wrote, directed and starred in skits they performed for their fellow square dancers.
Dotty and Danny loved to travel. She always planned their annual vacations and made sure their trips included live stage shows, which they enjoyed the most.
Dotty is survived by her two children, Laurie Boske of Rocky Hill and Kathy Parlin and her husband, Les of Lebanon, three grandchildren, Collin Boske of Rocky Hill, Kelly Parlin of Providence, RI and Jeffrey Parlin of Cranston, RI, and many nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her sister, Wanda Gajewski, brother Henry Gajewski, and son-in-law, Ronald Boske.  She was well liked by all who knew her and will be greatly missed.
Calling hours for relatives and friends will be on Monday, February 21, 2022, from 10:00-11:00 AM at the Berlin Memorial Funeral Home, 96 Main Street, Kensington.  At 11:00 am a small service will be held at the funeral home followed by burial at Maple Cemetery, Worthington Ridge, Berlin.  The family requests COVID protocols (masks) be honored.

Alexander Brandon Stephenson - March 30, 1990 - February 08, 2022

Obituary Preview: Alexander Brandon Stephenson, 31, passed away peacefully at his home in Kensington, Connecticut on February 8th, 2022.  He was born March 30, 1990, in Gelnhausen, Germany and is the beloved son of Eileen Kearney-Stephenson and the late Capt. Adam Brandon Stephenson.
Alex valued and cherished family and his many lifelong school friends, both students and faculty.  His family would like to thank each one of them for making a difference in his life.  A special thank you to Donna Hunter, his preschool teacher, and Sally Grady his high school social worker, for their patience, guidance and compassion they showed Alex throughout his school years. In addition, we extend a special thanks to his loyal friend, Tara Davis and her daughter, Annabelle (New Britain) for their love, laughs and support over the last few years. Though Alex was challenged with Autism Spectrum Disorder, his accomplishments were many.  He graduated Berlin High School, attended Lincoln College of New England where he majored in Mortuary Science and participated in the Cosmetology Programs at Maranello Cosmetology School and the Academy Di Cappelli Alex had a beautiful personality and charm all his own.  His sense of humor was appreciated by all and will live on with his memory.  He also had a very creative side to him.  Alex loved cooking, reading, music, fencing and mastering his talents in Mortuary Science and Cosmetology.  His smile and very presence will be missed!
He is survived by his loving Mother, Eileen Kearney, who resides in Kensington, Connecticut; Shirley and Brandon Stephenson, who reside in Georgia (his paternal grandparents) and several aunts, uncles and cousins he adored and his maternal aunts, Mary Anne and Gary Spagnoli, Jean and Michael Guyader, Beverly Bryda and Martin Kearney (Meriden) and Sharon and Altan Denizkurt (Amston) and several cousins and Maddie its newest member.  He is predeceased by his Father, Adam Stephenson, his godfather, Thomas Kearney (Meriden) and his maternal grandparents, Eileen and Thomas Kearney of Montvale, NJ.
The funeral will be held on Saturday, February 19th at 11:30 a.m. at St. Paul’s Church, 461 Alling Street, Berlin, Connecticut.  The burial will be private. Donations can be made to Charities below

LaChance, 77, of Terryville, beloved husband of Linda (Tonon) LaChance went home to be with his heavenly Father on Thursday, February 3, 2022.  Born on November 6, 1944, in Fall River MA., son to the late Hector and Lauretta LaChance. Normand proudly served our country in the United States Air Force from 1962-1966.  He worked at General Motors New Departure and was also self-employed.  He was known for his carpentry skills and was a master craftsman.  He also worked at Lowe’s in Torrington. Normand enjoyed singing for the Lord.  He sang at many churches, weddings, graduations, and funerals.  He had a music ministry in the Dominican Republic for several years. In addition to his wife and best friend of 39 years, he is survived by two sisters and brothers-in-law. Suzanne and Frank Lombardi and Pauline and Jack Zukowski, also a brother-in-law Jeffrey and Lori Tonon, sister-in-law Lori and Randy Levine and several nieces and nephews. In celebration of his life, please join us for a graveside service with military honors on Saturday March 12, 2022, at 10 A.M. at the State Veterans Cemetery, 317 Bow Lane in Middletown, CT followed by a service at 12:30 P.M. at Beacon Baptist Fellowship Church, 200 Elm Street in Thomaston, CT. Normand’s life was a blessing, he was loved and will be missed beyond measure.

Obituary Preview: Melanie Ann (Borgo) Forand, wife of the late Richard Paul Forand, passed peacefully on January 18, 2022. Born October 10, 1939, Melanie lived much of her long life in Berlin, CT. She spent her youth in East Berlin surrounded by family and friends in “the Grove” and later moved to Berlin.  She attended Berlin schools and enjoyed participating in school activities and making life-long friends. She cherished being able to keep in touch with her classmates all through her life. Melanie spent many wonderful summers at Lake Pocotopaug in her youth and had fond memories of friends at the Lake and the summer talent shows. Melanie attended the Teachers College of Connecticut, now CCSU and received a degree in Business/Secretarial Science. She loved being a Secretary for Otis Elevator and later for Aetna. In her retirement years she worked for Ames, Caldor and lastly Walmart. She was recognized by customers anywhere she went who thanked her for being such a pleasant, dedicated worker. Melanie’s most cherished roles were as a wife, mother and later a grandmother. She and her husband enjoyed day-tripping to the shore and sightseeing, always wanting to keep close to home. She attended every concert, sports event and Scout ceremony for her children and grandchildren. Her great joys were reading, writing and singing. She was a long-time member of Sacred Heart Choir and missed singing in the Choir as her health declined. If you ever sent her a card or letter she kept it, amassing quite a collection as she never wanted to discard a memento from a friend or relative.
Melanie is survived by her brother Peter Borgo of Montrose, CO, sister-in-law Diane Reynolds of Hobe Sound, FL, her son Michael P Forand of South Windsor CT , her daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne and Stuart Topliff and grandsons Jacob and Justin of Berlin CT as well as extended family and dear friends.

He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, retired from Emhart Technologies’ (ASSA BOYLE) in Berlin after 44 years. He graduated from St. Mary's and New Britain Hight School,  loved the NY Yankees, NY Giants, and Celtic.  Tom also loved fishing, hunting and was a member of St. Paul Church in Kensington.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter:  Jennifer Pawelczyk of Berlin, a brother:  George Pawelczyk and a granddaughter: Victoria LaPosta and several nieces and nephews.  He was pre-deceased by 2 brothers and 1 sister.

Obituary Preview: Ryszard joined eternal rest suddenly on Monday, January 3, 2022.  A devoted husband, father, father-in-law, grandpa & friend, he is now back with his beloved wife the late Bernadeta Krzeszowiec after almost 8 years apart, along with their dog “Bella”.  Ryszard loved his family & took pride in fishing for stripers with his son David. From memorable fishing trips with David & Roy catching albies & bluefish, he always enjoyed a great moment out on the water feeling free.  A master wood worker from Poland, a memorable story-teller, a tremendously kind soul, he felt for others with his huge heart.  He loved his pajama bottoms, feeding the squirrels & birds and had no problem being nice to complete strangers.  A great listener, he would truly do anything for those he loved.
He will be missed immensely by his son David Krzeszowiec, daughter-in-law Nicole Krzeszowiec, grandson Ethan Cooper, a brother Tadeusz Krzeszowiec and a sister Jozefa Krzeszowiec, dear friends Tomeck Jaros & Danuta Wolski, along with many friends & families.
Besides his wife, Bernadeta he was predeceased by his mother and father Wiktoria (Urbanik) and Franciszek Kreszowiec and a brother Jan Krezowiec.  Ryszard’s legacy in life was to just be happy and love the moments in your life with your family. “All of them”.

Obituary Preview: It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Marilyn L. (Holmes) Driscoll on December 31, 2021 with her family by her side.  Born October 21, 1942 in New Britain and a lifetime resident of Berlin.  Marilyn was the daughter of the late Roland and Mildred (Gregory) Holmes and the wife of her beloved husband of 26 years, Billy Driscoll.
Besides her husband, Marilyn is survived by her three sons:  David Giarratana and his wife Michelle of North Carolina, Michael Giarratana of Kentucky and Steven Woja and his partner, Brenda of Kentucky and a daughter: Sandra Woja of Kentucky, seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren, three sisters: Grace Callegari of Berlin, Alice Bissoni of New Britain and her twin Marion Holmes of Berlin.
She was pre-deceased by three brothers:  Philip (Whitey), Robert and Frank.  Family and friends may call on Saturday, January 8, 2022 at the Berlin Memorial Funeral Home, 96 Main Street, Kensington from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. followed by a service at the Kensington United Methodist Church on 103 Hotchkiss St., Kensington at 11:00 A.M.  Burial will be private.
The family would like to thank the Berlin VNA, especially Dorothy for their wonderful care, and would like everyone to please wear masks when attending the service for Marilyn.

Obituary Preview: Margaret Ottman "Grandma Meg", 68, passed away peacefully with her son by her side on December 29th, 2021 at Hartford Hospital in Hartford, CT. She was the beloved wife of the late Robert Ottman until his passing in 2014 and a devoted mother to her son Scott Ottman.
She was born in Brooklyn, New York on January 31st 1953. Margaret had an infectious personality and a heart of gold. Her sarcasm and inspirational talks will live on with her memory. Margaret was a hard worker and enjoyed being a part of the Deli Department for Stop and Shop in Berlin, CT.  Above all else, she loved spending time with her family, working on sewing projects, spending time with her pets and going to the casino with her son.
She is survived by her only son Scott Ottman, her Daughter-in-law Ashley Ottman, Grandson Connor Ottman and Granddaughter Mia Wilson who reside in CT. Her brothers Arthur Donowski, Thomas Donowski and her sister Patricia Donowski reside in New York.  She is also survived by a large extended family including aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister Kathy Bellafiore in 2019.
There will be a private burial at the State Veterans Cemetery in Middletown, CT on January 14th, 2022.

Obituary Preview: Ronald L Cox Sr., 86, of Kensington, passed away suddenly on Sunday, December 26th, 2021.
Born in Terryville, CT on December 20th, 1935, a son of the late Sarah and Delmer Cox.  Ron enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving from 1953 to 1956 and was employed as a manager for the A&P food chain for 45 years. He then worked as a custodian for the Town of Berlin at Emma Hart Willard School of Berlin for 15 years before his retirement. He was a parishioner of St. Paul Church.  Ron loved to be with his family – especially his grandchildren.  He also enjoyed fastpitch softball of which he was inducted into the Connecticut Hall of Fame. Ron was an avid New York Yankees fan.
Ron is survived by a son:  Ronald L.  Cox, Jr. of Wallingford, a Daughter in law – Marsha Hillman of Wallingford, 3 grandchildren:  Katie, Charlotte and Adam Cox, and several nieces and nephews.
Ron was pre-deceased by 4 brothers:  Dick, Dana, Raymond, and Phil.

Obituary Preview: Mildred (Millie) Snow passed away peacefully at the age of 90 in the caring facility of Rosewood Manor in Harwich, Massachusetts on December 13, 2021.    Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Millie was the youngest of four children born to Mary Meyers Thompson and Fred Thompson. Strong-willed, compassionate, generous, and determined, she graduated from both Bulkeley High School and Hartford Secretarial School in Hartford, Connecticut. Known for having a beautiful singing voice even into her eighties, she lived a life full of family, Christian faith, love of music and a strong work ethic. With her late husband of 38 years, Charles (Charlie) Snow, she and he lived in Berlin, Connecticut for many years and were active members of the Berlin Congregational Church.  Millie adored romance novels and shopping, especially for bargains but mostly bought for other people as well as contributing to many worthwhile organizations in need of funding with her generous heart. An avid traveler, she and Charlie frequently took cruises and would fly in their small plane to Cape Cod to visit her older sister, Pearl Blackburn and late brother-in-law Joe Blackburn, who was Charlie’s best friend. She also spent countless hours with beloved Goddaughter Cindy Robotham of Hyannis, who she treated as her own daughter, and Cindy’s family including husband Jerry, daughter Kate Conway of Sagamore Beach and son Joe Robotham of Hyannis. A devoted animal lover, Millie would often tell people with a wink and a smile that she used to sneak her beloved Beagle on the couch with her when her husband wasn’t looking. She worked in many secretarial capacities before working for Amica Insurance Company for over 30 years.

She worked at Corbin Cabinet Lock Company and for many years as a switchboard operator for Emhart. A lifelong resident of New Britain and Kensington, she loved to read, socialize, travel, and save newspaper clippings to read to her family. Viola was so grateful to her St. Paul’s church community for supporting her over these last years. She is survived by her son: Paul Sadin of Seattle, WA, granddaughters: Emily (Andrés Hernandez), Leslie Kearley of SC and Louisa Fish-Sadin (Chris Cornelius) of WA, great-granddaughter: June Hernandez of SC, son-in-law: John Kearley of VA, and daughter-in-law Susanne of WA. Born in Simsbury, CT, on June 18, 1926, daughter of the late Joseph and Stephania (Tajmajer), Irene was raised in Simsbury and graduated from Simsbury High School in 1944. She was a communicant of St. Paul’s Church, Kensington, a member of St. Paul’s Ladies Guild and member of The Berlin Senior Center.
Irene retired from Argo Industries in 1999 with over 25 years of service.
Irene was an avid flower gardener and prize winner for her Dahlias and African Violets at the Berlin Fair, dog lover, seamstress, cook, baker, vegetable preserver and loved to play Scrabble with her children and grandchildren. She and Fred were members of the Rocky Hill Square Dance group for over 20 years and also loved Round Dancing.  She and Fred also enjoyed Cruises and traveling as far as Sweden with friends.
Irene is survived by her seven children; Fred (Mary) Lewchik of Newington, Karen Rose of Atlanta, GA, Gail (Wayne) Bernaiche of Vernon, Cynthia (Daniel) Wagner of Southington, Philip Lewchik of Berlin, Audrey (Robert) Bradley of N. Attleboro, MA, Michael Lewchik and Robert Worster of Berlin. 12 Grandchildren, Heather (Karl) Strauss, Brent (Jami) Lewchik, Bryan (Megan)Lewchik, Kimberly (Sam) Patterson, Christopher & Whitney Rose, Nicholas and Austin Bernaiche, Michael, George, John and William Bradley, 7 Great grandchildren, Brooke and Hailey Strauss, Jack and Dace Lewchik, Connor and Madelyn Patterson and Rowan Lewchik, her sister, Nellie Glemboski, and many nieces and nephews. Irene is also survived by her best friend of 62 years, Joanne Meisterling of Berlin. She was predeceased by her granddaughter, Allison Rose, brother Joseph M. Krolikowski, sisters, Mary Dubowski, Agnes Ksiazek, Jennie Rudzinski, Caroline Sikora and son-in-law, Stanley H. Rose III.
The family would like to thank Irene’s caregivers, Debbie Polzun and Christiana Nettey for their extraordinary care and devotion.

Obituary Preview: Frances Jeanette (Gervais) Culver, a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, a proud member of her large French Canadian Catholic family passed away unexpectedly on October 17, 2021. Frances (Frannie) was born in New Britain, Connecticut on November 8, 1937, the tenth of ten children, the youngest, as she loved to frequently remind everyone.  Growing up on Maple Street, she was a bit of a tom-boy, loved to play basketball and took great pleasure in being the first to take off down the street on the bicycle that she was supposed to share with her sister, Claudette.  She graduated from New Britain High School in 1955 and soon thereafter met and married her beloved husband of 64 years, Paul Stanton Culver of Berlin, CT. She and Paul resided in Berlin where they raised their two daughters, Robin and Tammie. Both loved traveling in their RV and were able to see most of the country alongside their lifelong friends, Charles and Ethel Blake, also of Berlin. She worked as a secretary for National Automatic Products, Berlin, CT until 1989.  Frannie was famous for the most beautiful and delicious Christmas cookies that the whole family, nieces and nephews alike, looked forward to every holiday season.  She also was an expert baker and talented knitter of gorgeous sweaters and afghans that she custom made for friends and family.  Frances is survived by her husband Paul, her daughter Robin (Culver) Olschan and husband Brian of Madison, CT, daughter Tammie (Culver) Daoud and husband Sargon of West Simsbury, CT.  She is also survived by her four grandchildren, Gregory Olschan and his wife Theresa of Wethersfield, CT, Ethan Olschan of Madison, CT, Sydney and Lauren Daoud of West Simsbury, CT.  She also leaves behind her sister Helen Evans of Farmington, CT and Kathleen Sales of East Berlin, CT and many adoring nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sisters Anita Murray, Joyce Stanton, Claudette Faucher and brothers Norman, Ralph, Benjamin and Donald Gervais.
