Henry "Hank" Joseph Kress - May 11, 1923 - April 20, 2024

Departed: 04/20/2024 (Rogers)
Obituary Preview: Henry Joseph Kress (“Hank”) of Rogers, Arkansas, passed away peacefully on April 20th at the age of 100.
Hank was born May 11, 1923, to Anna (Swiecki) and Raymond Krawczeski in Hamtramck, Michigan, a large Polish community in the Detroit area. Hank grew up in close proximity to nearly a dozen cousins from his mother’s side of the family (Anna and her three sisters emigrated from Poland to the Detroit area). Hank attended Hamtramck High School and was a member of the choir club and tennis team. He became a skilled organist by the time he graduated from high school and met his future wife at the choir practice he led at St. Ladislaus. Hank married Genevieve (Jean) Lorenc in May 1948 and together they raised six children in Allen Park, a suburb of Detroit.
Hank studied classical piano from the age of ten and eventually expanded his performance repertoire to include jazz and swing, playing with professional orchestras as a young adult and continuing to perform with bands and orchestras of considerable size at dance halls and other venues in Michigan, Illinois and Indiana for several decades. Hank’s musical expertise extended to writing big band arrangements for orchestral instrumentation. Hank continued to be a dues-paying member of the American Federation of Musicians – Detroit chapter and, in 2023, he became the only 80-year member of AFM Local 5. Hank also served as church organist well into his seventies at numerous Catholic churches in the Detroit metropolitan area. As a young professional musician, Hank was advised to simplify his last name, thus the name change from Krawczeski to Kress.
Hank built his first one-tube radio when he was twelve years old. During high school, he worked for a radio store, troubleshooting and repairing radios. He learned Morse code and became an avid ham radio operator, enjoying this as a lifelong hobby. His logbook shows thousands of contacts made across the country and around the world. His call letters, K8KBW, were easy to remember: “K 8 Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey”! Hank also constructed ham radio equipment and built linear amplifiers.
As a young entrepreneur, Hank owned several businesses including a radio repair shop, a surplus clothing store, and a boating and fishing supply store. Hank partnered to establish an insurance agency selling homeowner’s, auto, and life insurance. He eventually sold the agency and joined Pentastar Aviation, Chrysler’s corporate flight department. He managed the avionics department, responsible for maintaining and servicing all the flight instrumentation for Pentastar aircraft. He retired in 1988 when he turned 65.
Hank took up flying around the time he turned forty. After getting his pilot’s license, he bought his first aircraft, a Cessna 172 which was later replaced with a Cessna 210. Hank earned his Instrument Rating (IR) and took the family on several cross-country trips to Florida and California. During the summer, when the children were at their lake-front cottage, he would sometimes do a fly-by and buzz the shoreline (some of the neighbors were not too happy about that).
Hank was predeceased by his parents and his brother Raymond and sister Florence. Hank’s spouse, Jean, passed away in 2015. Hank is survived by his six children: Kenneth Kress of Carson City, NV and wife Cynthia, Gary Kress of Topanga, CA and wife Jennifer, Steven Kress of Hayfork, CA, Michael Kress of Grants Pass, OR and wife Elois, Kathleen Kress of Bentonville, AR and husband Sam, and Robert Kress of Howell, MI and wife, Carole; five grandchildren: Robert Kress, Alyssa Kress, Sam Pisciotta, Simon Pisciotta, and Hank Kress. Services will be held at St. Stephen’s parish in Bentonville at 9am on Saturday, May 11th. All are welcome. Arrangements by Benton County Funeral Home 306 n. 4th St. Rogers, Arkansas.
