Gladys May Pejsa - October 05, 1923 - October 30, 2021

Departed: 10/30/2021 (Mt. Holly)
Obituary Preview: Gladys May Krull Wilson Pejsa passed from those who loved her to those who are waiting for her in heaven on October 30, 2021. Gladys was born October 5, 1923 in Corsica, South Dakota, the daughter of George and Dena (Van Heest) Krull.
Gladys graduated from Corsica High School in 1941 and obtained her BS and MS degrees from the Southern State College and University of South Dakota, Springfield /Vermillion. While in college, Gladys was active in the drama club and had several roles in plays, and she played basketball and tennis. Gladys initially taught in the country schools near Armour, SD. During World War II, while on summer break from teaching, she and her sister traveled to Bremerton, Washington to work in the Bremerton Navy Shipyards.
In 1946, Gladys married Roy Martin Wilson of Plankinton, South Dakota. As a wife of a farmer and rancher, a whole new life opened up for her, as she liked to say, “I was a city girl” growing up. Together, Roy and Gladys had three children, Gene, Cheryl and Rodney.
In 1957, Gladys returned to teaching, initially in a country school and then entered the public school systems in Tripp, Wagner and Gregory, South Dakota. During her 40 year teaching career she touched the lives of well over 1200 children and loved her chosen vocation with all her heart and soul. Gladys was very active in the local, state and National Education Associations and was elected several times as a delegate to the National Education Association delegation. In addition, she received the Rural School Teacher Award, The Laubach Literacy Action Tutor Award, and the Southern State College Recognition for Supervision of Student teachers and was a member of Alpha Kappa Delta Educational Sorority and the VFW Auxiliary.
As if teaching during the school year was not enough for Gladys, she also taught Sunday school, summer school, served as a Cub Scouts Den Mother for her sons and coached her daughter’s softball team. Gladys was a devout member of the Lutheran church all her life.
In 1975, Gladys married Frank Pejsa. Together, they enjoyed many years traveling, playing cards with friends, pheasant hunting, and going to dances, as Frank played the drums in a Polka band. In 1987, she retired, but never missed an occasion to “teach”; as she continued to take the opportunity to teach her grandchildren and great grandchildren and instill in them, the power of learning!
In 1989, Gladys bought a vacation home at Dana’s Court in Arizona, where she spent her winters for 26 years and enjoyed some of the happiest years of her life seeing her “snow bird” friends from all the cold states and Canada. These friendships brought a lot of joy to Gladys as everyone was always so happy to see what new colorful outfits she would be wearing with her matching jewelry. Gladys would go out of her way to bring people together to visit, play card games and shuffle board and go to the “Hall” for Bingo, music night and of course Holiday Dinners with over 100 retired people enjoying home cooked potluck turkey and ham dinners with all the fixings. And, let’s not forget the flea markets and garage sales where she would buy toys and bicycles to have for her son Rodney’s kids, Jack and Olivia visits from California. Olivia learned to ride a bike for the first time on gramma’s street as Jack played with the hand me down toy trucks and cars. While in Arizona, Gladys was also able to enjoy 12 years living near her granddaughter, Christine and was thrilled to be present at the birth of her second great grandchild, Christine and Gary’s daughter, Kinsley. Christine spent many weekends with her Gramma bringing Kinsley to visit and making sure Gramma’s new To-Do list was completed. Everyday Gladys had to get things done and that is probably why she lived such a long and full life. In 2016, Gladys moved to a senior living community in Minnesota to be near her daughter’s family. While living there, she took part in numerous social gatherings and made several new friends. As a parting gift, they had a party for her and asked her to share her memories of The Depression and the Dirty 30’s, as they laughed and told her, “You are the only one old enough to have lived in that era!”
In 2020, Gladys moved again, as her daughter and son-in-law and their children’s families decided they had enough of the cold weather and relocated to the Charlotte, NC. She enjoyed almost two years living in an active senior living apartment complex where she could exercise daily, attend the many social events and enjoy the daily afternoon “chit chat” gatherings. All her life, she remained active and involved in all life had to offer. She enjoyed watching baseball and basketball, reading and doing arts and crafts. Gladys was an avid painter and leaves behind several oil and watercolor paintings for her family to enjoy. Throughout her life, Gladys made enduring friendships where ever she called home.
One of her last memorable and beautiful moments after her 98th birthday was to re-dedicate her life to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ with communion, prayer of salvation and water baptism. She is now enjoying her new home in Heaven with Jesus.
Gladys was preceded in death by her husbands, Roy Martin Wilson and Frank Pejsa;  parents, George and Dena Krull; and her sister, Caroline (Krull) Nevins. Gladys is survived by her brother, Robert Krull and his wife Beverly (Sievert) Krull, her children, son Gene Wilson, daughter, Cheryl and son-in-law Robert Kraft, and son, Rod Wilson; grandchildren, Christine (Kraft) Leavitt and husband, Gary Leavitt, Brooke (Wilson) Vandeberg and husband, Kasey Vandeberg, Robert Kraft II and wife, Maureen (Reilly) Kraft, Olivia Wilson and Jack Wilson; great grandchildren, Thomas Vandeberg, Kinsley Leavitt, Harper Vandeberg, Kennedy Leavitt, William Vandeberg and Robert Kraft III.
Gladys’ remains will be buried in the family plot at Graceland Cemetery, Corsica, South Dakota. The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff at The Charlotte Assisted Living facility for the outstanding care provided to their mother over the last few months and to the Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte staff for their excellent and heartwarming care.

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information for those who want to pay their respects. They help notify people of the passing, provide details about funeral services, and offer a chance for loved ones to share memories and condolences.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the family members or close relatives of the deceased write the obituary. However, it's not uncommon for friends, colleagues, or even funeral homes to assist in writing or publishing the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral services, memorial donations, and any other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it's recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important information. Aim for around 150-250 words, but some publications may allow longer or shorter submissions.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information like name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed tribute that provides additional biographical information and context.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. You may need to provide the written obituary text, along with any photos or other materials they require.

Can I publish an obituary online?

Yes, there are many online platforms and websites dedicated to hosting obituaries. These can be a convenient way to share the news with a wider audience and allow people to leave condolences and memories.

Is there a cost associated with publishing an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication or platform. Some newspapers or websites may charge a fee for printing or hosting the obituary, while others may offer free or discounted services.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The publication timeline can vary depending on the newspaper or platform. Some may publish obituaries within a day or two of submission, while others may have a longer delay due to editorial review or production schedules.

Can I edit or update an obituary after it's been published?

In some cases, yes. If you need to make corrections or updates to an already-published obituary, contact the publication or platform directly to inquire about their editing policies.

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

If you prefer not to publicly announce the passing, you can choose to keep the obituary private by sharing it only with close family and friends. Alternatively, you can request that the publication or platform restrict access to the obituary.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Including meaningful quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and personality to the obituary. Just be sure to verify copyright permissions if necessary.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an obituary?

If you notice mistakes in an already-published obituary, contact the publication or platform immediately to report the error. They will work with you to correct the issue as quickly as possible.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes! Some people choose to write their own obituaries ahead of time as a way to reflect on their life and legacy. This can also help alleviate burden from loved ones during a difficult time.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary?

If you're having trouble writing an obituary, consider enlisting help from a friend, family member, or professional writer. You can also look up examples online for inspiration and guidance.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial funds in an obituary?

Absolutely! Many families choose to include information about charitable donations or memorial funds in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased and support a worthy cause.

How do I find archived obituaries?

You can search online archives of newspapers or visit local libraries to access archived obituaries. Some websites also specialize in hosting historical obituaries and genealogical records.

What is the purpose of an online guestbook?

Can I republish an old obituary online?

If you have permission from the original publisher or copyright holder, you can republish an old obituary online. Be sure to verify any necessary permissions before doing so.

How do I create a digital archive of family obituaries?

You can create a digital archive by scanning printed copies of old obituaries or saving digital versions from online sources. Consider organizing them into folders or creating a private online repository for easy access.

Are there any cultural or religious considerations when writing an obituary?

Yes! Be mindful of cultural and religious traditions when writing an obituary. For example, some faiths may have specific customs around announcing deaths or mourning periods. Be respectful of these differences when crafting the tribute.

Can I include humor or lighthearted anecdotes in an obituary?
