Departed: 01/01/2021 (Nowata)
Obituary Preview: BENJAMIN FUNERAL SERVICE NOWATA, OKLAHOMA 918-273-2700
We'd like to thank everyone for joining us to celebrate Juanita Martin's life.  Juanita was the most loving, caring person you could ever know.  Although very quiet, she was always fun to be around.  She would tell us jokes all the time.  No matter what she was faced with she would always try to make everyone around her smile.  Juanita loved to read books and was competitive when it came to playing games.
Juanita Martin was the youngest child of four born to Lula and Theodore Fikes on November 2, 1952 in West Point, New York.  She graduated from Highland Falls High School in 1970. She went on to join the military and was stationed in Ft Leonardwood, MO where she met the love of her life Gary Martin Sr..  They later married on April 29, 1972. Not too long after she retired her military career and they started a family.  They shared almost 49 years of marriage together.  He stood by her side faithfully until the end.  Juanita was baptized as a Jehovah Witness in 1976 and faithfully served Jehovah until death.  Talking about the Bible was one of her favorite things to do.  She would share her years of Bible knowledge with anyone she came in contact with.  Juanita was a proud mother of five children and a loving wife.  Her whole family felt the warmth of love from her huge, caring heart.
Juanita never let people know about all the things she was going through.  She fought an uphill battle for many years.  Through it all she showed strength and courage; all the while trying to make others happy as she kept on a smile.  On January 1, 2021, Juanita Martin was succumbed by death.  Juanita Martin was deeply loved by family and friends and will be greatly missed by all that had the pleasure of knowing her.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Theodore Fikes Jr.  She is survived by her husband Gary Martin Sr.; children Zolton Martin, Marcus Martin, Gary Martin Jr., Datina Chinda and Nina Howard; with 9 grandchildren; and her two sisters Luvone Fikes and Louise Johnson and a host of nieces and nephews.

Carl LeRoy Higeons - July 04, 1918 - December 23, 2020

Departed: 12/23/2020 (Nowata)
Obituary Preview: Carl Leroy Higeons came into this world with a great celebration! Born on the 4th of July 1918 in Talala, Oklahoma, Carl was the first child to bless the home of Clyde Rosville and Lola Claris Bray Higeons and the first grandchild of Dora Bray Paullus. World War I was about to end, horse and buggy was the most common means of transportation, and the best way to communicate was still the written letter. Carl became the leader of nine siblings, worked on the family farm, and attended and graduated from Talala High School.
In 1940, Carl married a sweet young lady, Violet Marie Morris, he met at a 4th of July celebration, and they shared 68 years together. Their family grew with the birth of their three children, Carl Leroy, Jr, Janet Marie, and Jerald Leon. Most of Carl’s working career was spent in the aircraft industry as a machinist but helping his brothers in the hayfield was always a summer priority. He worked for Douglas, Northrop, and Spartan for ten years collectively before hiring into American Airlines, retiring in 1982 after 32 years. He spoke often of the importance of a good, dependable work ethic and always taking time to help others. Carl’s life certainly reflected his own words of wisdom. He lived a life of service – always there when someone needed him, whether family, friend or stranger. Blessed with the ability to master any problem, Carl was known as the neighborhood handyman. Raised on a farm, he learned how to make do from scratch. He could build it, fix it, stretch it or invent it. He loved tinkering in his shop with mechanics and repurposing things. Much of his work was at the master craftsman level in mechanics, woodworking, welding, electrical and metal working. The Centenarians of Oklahoma honored Carl on his birthday this year by inducting him into their Hall of Fame. He lived his last few years at Oxford Glen in Owasso where he made lots of friends among the residents and staff. When the staff asked Carl his secret to a long life, he replied, ‘exercise and surround yourself with good people.’
On Wednesday, December 23, 2020, at the age of 102, Carl passed away at a local hospital. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Lola Higeons, wife, Violet Higeons, son, Jerald Higeons, granddaughter, Marie Ingmire Barlow, and three brothers, Edgar, Robert and Chester Higeons. Following his granddaughter’s funeral, Carl talked of his love for Marie and how he looked forward to seeing her someday in heaven. He spoke of how he trusted Jesus for his salvation and was certain he would see her again. Carl is survived by his son, Carl Leroy, Jr. and his wife, Marilyn, of Talala, daughter, Janet Marie Higeons Hendricks and her husband, Roy Hendricks, of Owasso, five grandchildren, Dr. Thomas Ingmire and his wife, Kim, of Edmond, Kevin Higeons of Talala, Leisa Yount of Talala, and Jason Higeons of Tulsa, seven great grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren. Surviving siblings include three sisters, Mary Killion, Clementine Myers, and Helen Peacock, and three brothers, Jim, Bill, and Joe Higeons. A whole wad of nieces and nephews call him, ‘Uncle.’
Carl Higeons - father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend - will be greatly missed. Helping hands, creative mind, loving heart.

Sherman Earl Shanklin - August 07, 1952 - December 06, 2020

Departed: 12/06/2020 (Nowata)
Obituary Preview: BENJAMIN FUNERAL SERVICE NOWATA, OKLAHOMA 918-273-2700....
Real estate tycoon and retired fireman Sherman Earl Shanklin also known as Baron von Shanklin, 68, passed away on Sunday, December 6, 2020.  He was born in Brockville, Ontario, Canada on August 7, 1952 to John A. and Mavis Shanklin.  In 1956, they moved to Watova, Oklahoma to start their first farm.  Sherman was quite the journeyman already by the young age of four.  In 1962, Sherman and his family settled into the pink brick house that many know so well on Hickory Street in Nowata, Oklahoma.
In high school, Sherman was very active in FFA which was the catalyst for his passion in agriculture.  He would go on to obtain his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from Oklahoma State University.  Sherman’s first job right out of college was with the Hampshire Association.  From there, he went to work on the Rutter’s farm in Shelbina, Missouri where he oversaw the swine division.  Next on his career path, he was involved in his father’s dairy, beef and grain operation in Delaware, Oklahoma.  During that time, he was also a consultant for Richard Wood Investment Company out of Pittsburg, Kansas, where he advised in farm management and ag real estate sales.  In 1983, his first daughter Carly Louise [the Princess of Wolf Creek] was born.  He pestered his parents to deed him a plot of land on the dairy ranch and in 1985, his dreams came true when he finally had the land and started his registered show hog production facility. He was also blessed with his first son, Trevor John [the Duke of Delaware] in that same year.  Due to his hard work and experience, he was runner-up for Pork All American in 1986 and in the following year, he won the title of Pork All American.  He had his third and final child, Corbin Harold [the Duke of Yorkshire] in 1988. He heeded the call for public service as a professional firefighter for Bartlesville Local 200 in 1989.  After the dairy and pig farm were sold in 1994, Sherman started his own real estate company, Shanklin Farm & Ranch Realty in the basement of the Nowata Post Office.  His children remember often helping him out with open houses, going on rides to many closings, and learning the true definition of “Sherman Time.”
In 2003, Sherm married his Viking Princess, Brenda, and lovingly embraced his two stepdaughters, Lindsey and Taylor.
After making a name for himself, he became the broker/owner of RE/MAX of Green Country specializing in farm and ranches.  In 2009, he was inducted into the RE/MAX Hall of Fame.  With the help of his wife Brenda and his daughter Lindsey, in 2014, he won the prestigious title of Broker of the Year.  Through his continued drive and development of knowledge, Sherm attained the coveted designation of Accredited Land Consultant.
Sherm’s passion for real estate was second only to his passion for his family and getting to spend time with his grandchildren.
Those who will be carrying on his legacy are his mother, Mavis, his wife Brenda, his daughter Carly, of Dallas, Texas, his sons Trevor and his wife Leslie, of Noxie Farms, Corbin and wife Chelsea of Mounds, his stepdaughters Lindsey Coe and husband Brett and Taylor Thompson, all of Bartlesville, his sister Debby Driggers and husband John of Mt. Dora, Florida, and seven grandchildren, Tyler, Bryleigh, Breckynn, Addison, Berlynne, Brooks Sherman, and Brooks Wesley.

Frank Edward DeMoss Jr. - February 03, 1943 - December 02, 2020

Departed: 12/02/2020 (Nowata)
Obituary Preview: BENJAMIN FUNERAL SERVICE NOWATA, OKLAHOMA 918-273-2700....
Frank Edward DeMoss, Jr. (Born: Nowata, OK on Feb. 3, 1943 – Passed: Nowata, OK on Dec. 2, 2020)
Frank DeMoss, aka: Big Frank, Big Red, Chief, Frankie, Rockhead, Uncle Frank, Pops & Dad, was born in Nowata to Frank Sr. & Hazel back in “the good ol’ days.” He had a talent for making friends wherever he went with his ability to tell a good story, his generosity and big heart, and of course, his Okie charm. He joined the Navy when he was 17 and served for 22 years. After retiring from the Navy, he tried to settle down to a civilian job, but said “tuh heck with this!” and joined up with MSC (Military Sealift Command) for several years. When he retired from MSC, he spent the rest of his time on this planet making the great “Frankie” migration every year; a circle inside the U.S. where he spent time with family and friends he made that settled all across this great nation, making more friends each year he travelled. If you were hungry, he’d barbecue for you. If something was broke, he’d help you fix it. If you were short on cash, he’d get you some dollars. If you needed to talk, he’d listen. He was a source of great advice and Okie wisdom. He only wanted those he loved “to be happy and not worry ‘bout nuthin!” All we can do now is enjoy the memories we have of him and try our best to follow his advice. He’s free now to sail through the universe and spread the good Okie word to parts beyond! May the seas lie smooth before you. May a gentle breeze forever fill your sails. May sunshine warm your face, and kindness warm your soul.
He is survived by his son Foy, his daughters Marion and Lena, and his wife Beth; his grandchildren Booker, Maya, Riley, & Mycah; Julia, his sister-in-law and his nieces & nephews Brian, Clint, Retha and all their children; his sisters Beverly and Sherry & his brother Steve; and of course, countless friends he held as family.
Do to all that is going on in the world right now, we as a family have decided to postpone the gathering at this time.  Hopefully next summer we will be able to have a memorial then.
