MawMaw Judy loved everyone with her whole heart; she took care of everyone like they were her own children. Her greatest passion was to help people. Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries are important because they provide a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also serving as a notification to those who knew them. They can also be a valuable resource for genealogists and historians.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The task of writing an obituary usually falls to the family members or close friends of the deceased. Funeral homes or mortuaries may also offer assistance in writing and publishing obituaries.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, cause of death (optional), surviving family members, occupation, hobbies, achievements, and details about the funeral or memorial service.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's generally recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important information. Aim for around 150-200 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and newspapers allow you to include one or more photos of the deceased. This can help make the obituary more personal and meaningful.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only the basic facts. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

Where can I publish an obituary?

Obituaries can be published in local newspapers, online obituary platforms, funeral home websites, social media, and other online channels. You can also create a physical memorial book or display at the funeral or memorial service.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the platform or newspaper. Some online platforms offer free or low-cost options, while traditional newspapers may charge by the word or line.

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance, often as part of their estate planning or as a way to ensure their legacy is presented accurately.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary?

If you're having trouble writing an obituary, consider seeking help from a friend or family member, or ask your funeral home for guidance. You can also find templates and examples online to get started.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and deadlines. Be prepared to provide all necessary information and payment (if required).

Can I make changes to an already-published obituary?

In most cases, changes can be made to an online obituary, but it may be more difficult to make changes to a printed newspaper obituary. Check with the publication or platform for their policies.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

The duration of an online obituary's availability varies depending on the platform or website. Some may keep them archived indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes, including meaningful quotes or song lyrics can add a personal touch to an obituary and help capture the essence of the deceased.

What if I want to keep the funeral private?

You can still publish an obituary without including details about the funeral or memorial service. Instead, focus on celebrating the person's life and sharing memories with those who knew them.

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers?

Yes, many families choose to include information about charitable donations in lieu of flowers in the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased and support a good cause.

How do I notify friends and acquaintances about an obituary?

You can share the obituary on social media, via email, or through personal phone calls/texts. You can also ask mutual friends or acquaintances to spread the word.

What if I'm not comfortable writing about certain aspects of the person's life?

You don't have to include every detail about the person's life. Focus on sharing positive memories and accomplishments that celebrate their life without being too revealing or sensitive.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Yes, humor can be an effective way to capture the personality and spirit of the deceased. Just be sure to use discretion and avoid offending anyone who may read it.

How do I handle conflicting opinions about what to include in an obituary?
