Obituary Preview: Marion Barbara Kotlarek peacefully passed away in her apartment at Edgewood Manor on the evening of March 26, 2020. Marion was a life-long resident of Proctor MN, where she was born on July 7, 1927 to Ferdinand and Clothilde Vanneste.
Marion married Floyd Kotlarek in January of 1950. She and Floyd celebrated over 50 years of marriage. Marion was an avid quilter, gifting many friends and relatives with her creations. She also excelled at other needlecraft, as sewing clothing, and knitting. She spent many free hours knitting mittens for the Proctor Mitten Tree. She loved gardening and being outdoors.
Marion is survived by her brother Tom (Karen) Vanneste, of Proctor, and her children, Peter (Joni) Kotlarek, of Onalaska WI, and Anne Mann, of Duluth. She also is survived by 3 grandchildren, Zachary, Alexandra and Benjamin Kotlarek, and her favorite grand-dog, Sam.
She was preceded in death by her husband Floyd, and her brother Gene Vanneste.
Due to the current health concerns of the nation, there will sadly be no public services or visitation.

Nancy Moline - April 28, 1933 - March 21, 2020

Obituary Preview: Nancy Jean Moline, 86-Duluth, MN, died peacefully surrounded by family on March 21, 2020. Born Nancy Jean Melander in Duluth, Minnesota on April 28, 1933, she lived a full and wonderful life devoted to her loving husband Don and family.
Nancy was the youngest of three daughters, a graduate of Stanbrook Hall, telephone operator at Northwestern Bell and life long resident of Duluth. She married the love of her life, Donald Moline, in May 1954 and they were together for almost 65 years. Family was the most important part of Nancy’s life and she was a beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Holidays and family gatherings were deeply important to Nancy and brought her great joy. These traditions were steadfast over many decades.
Nancy adored her four grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Grandma Nan’s grilled cheese, brownies and banana bread were family favorites. She faithfully attended all of her grandchildren’s school activities and especially enjoyed watching them play hockey and golf.
Nancy enjoyed many summer vacations at the family cabin in Nestor Falls, Ontario. When the children were grown she and Don vacationed in Sarasota, Florida. Nancy took up golf later in life and established herself as the “best putter” while playing with family and friends. She is an honorary member of Northland Country Club.
Nancy is preceded in death by her husband Don, mother Agnes Melander, and sister Betty Boyle.
Nancy is survived by her children, Linda Moline (Phil Kneeland) Orlando, FL, Gary Moline (Mary) Duluth, Susan Liberty (Brian) Duluth; grandchildren, David Moline (Rachel), Daniel Moline (Carrie), Lisa Filzen (Justin) and Joe Liberty; great grandchildren, Benjamin, Madison, Joshua, Jed, Sofia, and Wes; sister, Lois Nicholson of Green Valley, AZ.

Obituary Preview: Lynn Wilson, age 69, of Duluth, passed away Friday, January 31, 2020 at Solvay Hospice House surrounded by family. He was born July 25, 1950 in Duluth, MN to Edward L. and Carmella (Cherro) Wilson.
He graduated from Duluth Central High School in 1969. Lynn married Mary (Bierbaum) in Tofte in 1972. He had a varied career path including; Erie Mining Co., retail hardware sales at Northland Hardware in Schroeder, Daugherty Hardware and Burggraf Hardware in Duluth, driver for Jeff Foster Trucking and PRS Transportation. Lynn was always ready to lend a helping hand and offer advice. He was a wonderful and trusted friend to many. He was the founding fire chief of Schroeder Fire Department serving for 15 years and a Tofte Rescue Squad member. He was past master of the Grand Marais Masonic Lodge #322.
He was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law, Robert Bierbaum; mother-in-law, Shirley Bierbaum; brother, James and sister, Patricia.
Lynn is survived by his wife of 47 years, Mary; daughter, Laura (Bill) Jones; son, Edward Wilson; grandchildren, Melanie, Nina, Broderick, Layla, and Eva; brother, David (Amy) Wilson; sister, Kathleen McKeever; sisters-in-law, Janet (Mark) Jadwin and Jacque (Dan) Nelson and many nieces and nephews.

Wilbert Erickson - October 01, 1921 - December 30, 2019

Obituary Preview: Wilbert Gust Erickson, 98, passed away on December 30, 2019 at St Mary’s Hospital. He was born October 1, 1921 in Hermantown, MN on the family dairy farm, to Alfred and Alice Erickson. Wilbert attended a two–room school house through the eighth grade.
Wilbert served in the United States Army/Air Force from 1942 to 1946 during World War II. He was injured during training when the jeep he was riding in left the road while doing night maneuvers. He was hospitalized for several months and could have been honorably discharged as a disabled veteran but chose to stay in the military and serve his country after he was healed. He was stationed in Guam where he built buildings on the base and constructed new runways. He is a member of DAV.
After serving, Wilbert returned to the states where he met and married the love of his life, Mary Elizabeth Cox on August 9, 1947. They were married for 65 years, building a life together, before Mary passed away in 2012. They lived in a home on the hill in Duluth where they kept busy with the latest happenings in the Duluth area via the police scanner, visiting family around the state, and being together.
Wilbert was a bricklayer mason for 40 years in the Duluth area. He was a bricklayer foreman for J.D. Harold and for 25 years for United General Construction. He retired in 1983. Wilbert was a very talented carpenter and did wood working in his garage for years after retirement. Wilbert took pride in his Swedish heritage. He would often make jokes and his family would tease regarding “Swedes” and their characteristics. Wilbert had a soft spot for cats, enjoyed eating sweets, drinking coffee, watching the deer and birds outside his window and golf on TV. He was a regular at Bridgeman’s in Duluth where everyone knew him by name, and order!
He is preceded in death by his wife Mary of 65 years; parents Alfred and Alice Erickson; brothers, Erick and Bertil Erickson; sisters, Dora Kruger, Olga Lind, Hilda Larson and Laura Larson. Wilbert is survived by many nieces and nephews, and grand nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at 10 a.m. one hour prior to 11 a.m. service on Saturday 1/4/20 at Bell Brothers Jarvi Dowd Funeral Home, 925 East 4th Street, in Duluth. Entombment will be at Sunrise Cemetery in Hermantown.

Muriel was a very active member of Redeemer Lutheran Church. She served as a Sunday School Teacher as well as President of the Ladies Guild. Muriel’s life was centered around her family, she was an avid gardener and a fabulous cook. She and her husband owned and operated Mega’s Drive-In for many years. Her kind spirit touched everyone who came into her life. She was a beautiful and loving soul.
Muriel was preceded in death by her husband, Paul; two grandchildren, Christian Barnes and Chad Hyke; her parents; a sister, Jackie Peterson and brother, Larry Lee; as well as special aunt, Millie Barnes.
She is survived by her children, Mark (Linda) Erkkila, Sharlane (Terry) Barnes, Dianne Coning, Lee (Kathy) Erkkila, Paula (Richard) Johnson and Annette K. Mega; twelve grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dianne (Kris) Christopherson and Marilyn (Glenn) Sohlman.

Jean was a woman who was not afraid to speak her mind. You always knew where you stood with her. She had many friends and loved to entertain. She enjoyed her Birthday Club with the girls; meeting at each other’s houses and going out for lunch.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wendell; and her parents.
Jean is survived by her step-son, Roger (Kathy) Wood; grandchildren, Carrie (Austin) Biggins, Michelle Crescenzo, and Hollie (Rob Nelson) Wood; great-grandchildren, Jeremiah, Zachary, Bentino, Isaiah, Jonathan, Devon and Saddie; special long-time friend, Ruth Bloomquist; and other extended family and friends.

Florence was born to Thomas and Violet Ultican in 1917. She graduated from Denfeld High School in 1935. She ­­­­­­married Morris Brosdal and together they raised two sons and two daughters. She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church and the Hope Circle. She enjoyed reading, working crossword puzzles, bowling and playing card games with her grandchildren. She especially enjoyed weekly visits from her niece Eunice Thorstensen and yearly visits from her niece, Sandy (Mike) and their granddaughter, Lillian. Florence also enjoyed the family gatherings every summer at Sand Lake Resort in Sturgeon Lake.
Florence is survived by her sons, Ron Brosdal and Roy (Lorelei) Brosdal; daughters, Jeanne Rychlak and Cheryl (Bernie) Brunner; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Margaret Kline - January 15, 1924 - December 05, 2019

Obituary Preview: Margaret Shepard Kline, 95, of Duluth, MN, died on December 5, 2019 at Benedictine Living Community of Duluth.
Margie was born to Sheldon and Lucile Shepard on January 15, 1924 in Duluth, MN. She graduated from Duluth Central High School in 1941 and from University of Illinois in 1945 with a degree in zoology. Following graduation, she worked at Abbott Laboratories in Chicago.
Margie married Dr. Richard Kline of Grand Rapids, MN on June 25, 1949 in Duluth. They made a career move for his medical practice to St. Cloud, MN in 1958. She lived there until 2008, when she moved back to her hometown of Duluth, bringing her life “full circle”.
She planted deep roots in her beloved community of St. Cloud, forming many lasting friendships and raising her four children there after being widowed at a young age in 1964. She was active in First United Methodist Church of St. Cloud for 50 years and volunteered at St. Cloud Hospital for 40 years. She also volunteered at the Great River Regional Library and the Salvation Army. Upon moving to Duluth, she became a member of Hope United Methodist Church.
Margie loved bird-watching, reading, knitting, cross-stitching, traveling, and attending music performances. Many fortunate friends and family members have been the beneficiaries of her beautiful handiwork. The legacy that Margie passed on to her children was the importance of giving freely and generously of one’s time and gifts.
Margie was preceded in death by her husband Richard F. Kline, MD; her parents; her sister, Ann Shepard Menard; and brother, E. Bradley Shepard.
She is survived by her four children – Barbara (Richard) Crowell of Duluth, MN, Elizabeth (Steven) Hill of Menahga, MN, Janet Summerall of St. Cloud, MN, Bruce (Michela Marin) Kline of Cavaso del Tomba, Italy/ Boulder, CO; and eight grandchildren – Aaron Crowell, Kendra Crowell Morrill, Suzanne Hill Niemi, Craig Hill, Sean Summerall, Stacy Summerall Prendergast, Sierra Kline Kane, and Kelsie Kline; and by seven great-grandchildren.
We express deep gratitude to staff at Ecumen Lakeshore Independent Living, Benedictine Living Community’s Westwood Terrace, Benedictine Living Community’s Safe Harbor, and St. Luke’s (Home Care and) Hospice. Because of these very special people, our mother was able to live with comfort and dignity in her last years.

She has instructed over 16,000 students and helped them discover Art, use their own creativity, and develop their talents. She loved her family, faith, Art, cooking, traveling abroad and teaching.
Cheryl was preceded in death by her parents, William and Winifred Goad; husband, Doug Carlson; and brother, Jerry Goad.
She is survived by her sons, Nathan and Ryan Carlson and his wife, Ashley; two grandsons, Tanner and Brody Carlson; nephew, Darrin Goad; and her life partner, Richard Battye.

Allan was an Air force Veteran, serving during the Vietnam War. He worked as an electrician for Wisconsin Bell, retiring in 1999. He served a Union Steward for the (CWA) Communication Workers of America, a member of the West Duluth American Legion Post 71.
Allan was a ham radio operator, enjoyed golf and football but especially holidays with family. He had a great love of wildlife.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Shari, who was his beloved soulmate and best friend and his parents.
Allan is survived by his sisters, Joanne (Billy Joe) Cox and Therese (Michael) Sundberg; brothers, Timothy (Theresa) Beaulier, James Beaulier and Lawrence (Cindy) Beaulier; nieces, Alissa (Patrick) Horan, Claire, Brianna and Patti Rose Beaulier; nephews, Anton Van Vlymen, John Sundberg, Jacques and Alex Beaulier.

Obituary Preview: Terence Philip Brouse, Sr. was born August 9, 1935 to James and Daisy (Cooke) Brouse in Duluth, MN. He died November 3, 2019 due to Lewy Bodies disease.
Terry joined the Marines, spending two tours in Viet Nam. Upon getting out he worked several jobs, then deciding to join the Air Force, retiring from there. Terry did mechanical work until he was retired for good.
Golfing became his passion, going out to Lester Park with his buddies. After shooting 18 holes, they would go back later and hunt golf balls; he had quite the collection. He loved to socialize, telling stories and going down memory lane. He enjoyed reading westerns & histories. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 137, Northland VietNam Vets & the American Legion Post 71.
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Kenny, Lauretta, Gary and Jimmy.
He is survived by his son, Terence, Jr. (Lois) and daughter, Pamela Burkhardt; grandchildren, Britta (Josh) Valverde and Ashley Haage and Elgin (Angie) Miller; great-grandchildren, Keagan, Kieran, Lochlan and Aislin Valverde, Drake and Damien Miller, special daughter, Linda (Todd) Roe. He also leaves behind his siblings, Marilyn, Leslie, Galen, Boyd, Shanna, Jennifer and Wayne; many cousin; nieces and nephews; his true love Sandra Tinsley, and her son, Mitch; along with cats, Milo, Chloe and Georgia.

Obituary Preview: Wade Hampton Connell III, age 78, of Duluth, died peacefully on Monday, October 21, 2019 at Solvay Hospice House in Duluth. Wade was born to Hampton and Nellie Connell on December 13, 1940. He graduated from Denfeld High School in 1959 and attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis and the University of Minnesota, Duluth, before settling into a lifelong career as a machinist, tool and die maker. His father, Vice President in charge of engineering at the Diamond Tool and Horseshoe Company, was perhaps his most influential teacher who bought Wade his first lathe when he was twelve years old.
Wade worked at Duluth Scientific as head of Research and Development and at Barko Hydraulics as Job Methods Supervisor. During his lifetime, Wade worked in Mexico, El Salvador and Brazil, and traveled to more than fifty countries.
Wade is survived by his sons, Fred Woltman and Michael Lindorff. He is remembered by many friends and family including his sister, Maxine Connell Caserta, his niece, two nephews, and seven great nieces and nephews.

June loved spending time with her family and friends. She took joy in reading, knitting, and needle point. She also enjoyed many years at her lake home in Wisconsin.
June was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Donald; son, Donn B. Anderson; and parents.
She is survived by her daughter; Bonnie (David) Hedquist of Hermantown; four grandchildren, Jill (Dale) Anderson of Duluth, Stephanie Anderson of Duluth, Sarah (Alex) Zayas of Saginaw and Lisa (Jesse) Miller of Floodwood; three great-grandchildren, Colton, Jesse Jr. and Olivia; her sister Beverly (Robert) Engstad of Duluth and many nieces and nephews.

Ken went to Duluth East High School and has a Bachelor's degree from St Cloud State University. He served honorably as a Lieutenant Colonel (most recent, retired) in the Minnesota Army National Guard for more than a 20 years. Ken always enjoyed the outdoors, sports, canoeing, fishing, hunting, and spending time with his girls. The Celebration of Life in Honor of Kenneth A. Charlene was a member of First United Methodist Church for many years and the Debra Circle. Char had a passion for music, especially the classics. She loved to play her organ, was an excellent seamstress, and enjoyed her trips to St. Louis Park to spend time with her sister.
She was proceeded in death by her parents, younger sister Eleanor Bjostad, and sister, June (Jack) Currier.
Charlene is survived by her niece, Joyce (Michael Rime); two nephews, Dennis R Currier (Patty) and David J Currier (Mary); six great nieces and nephews and three great-great nieces.
Thank you for the wonderful care from Benedictine Health Center, St. Mary’s Hospice, and her wonderful friends from First United Methodist Church who were a blessing to her.

Obituary Preview: The Reverend Alice Olson- loving wife, mother, sister and friend- died peacefully at her Clover Valley home southwest of Two Harbors on September 21, 2019 at age 72.
She was known and loved by many for her ministry as a Deacon in the Episcopal Church and as Chaplin at the Lakeshore Home, Duluth, from which she retired in 2018.
She was born Alice Ingrid Pylkkanen to Walter and Ina Pylkkanen on July 31, 1947, graduated from Duluth Central High School in 1965, and was ordained a deacon at St. Mark’s Cathedral, Minneapolis, on June 17, 2001 following four years of preparation.
Alice married Quentin Olson on July 2, 1966 and immediately became an Army wife during Quentin’s Vietnam combat tour and afterwards at Ft. Hood, Texas which initiated their 53 years of marriage. Following their service years, she worked at the Duluth Police Department and other jobs, and together they raised a daughter and two sons while working and volunteering in Duluth, then St. Louis, and back in Duluth.
Following her 18 years of ministry, she is cherished by countless individuals and families for her consoling memorial services and counseling, uplifting Sunday services, and voluntary work with Altrusa and other groups. Her calling came as a natural acceptance of all without judgement and devotion to community.
She was an avid reader of topics of spiritual, social, and historical significance. She also loved to take sauna and dips in the creek, embracing the spirituality of her Finnish heritage and the family homestead. When younger she enjoyed curling, cross-country skiing, camping, sailing, and taking long drives through the backroads of Minnesota.
In addition to Quentin, she is survived by her brother Don Pylkkanen, St. Paul; daughter Alissa Larsen, Superior; sons Philip Olson, Crystal, and Dane Olson, St. Paul; grandchildren Rachael Olson, Emma, and Mason Larsen; great grandson Cayden Olson; cousins Jeanette Laine, Duluth, Anna-Marie Dennhardt and Ricky Sklazeski, Thunder Bay, and Irene Poola, Hibbing; and niece Briana Johnston and grandnephew Wally Johnston, Eagan.
Visitation: 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Memorial Service, Saturday, October 5th at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 1710 E Superior St, in Duluth.
Any gifts of money will go to the Bishop Brian Prior Youth Scholarship Fund.

Born March 25, 1929 to Toni (Medelbo) and Alfred Strom in Duluth, MN.
Soon after graduating from Denfeld High School in 1947, Roy started dating Marcy. He was drafted into the Army and was trained in sharp shooting and cryptography. He was sent to fight in Korea on the front lines for 17 months. Many poker games resulted in Roy sending the winnings home to Marcy to save for their future together. When he did return home, he didn’t know what he should do for the rest of his life. He attended the U of M Duluth for a short time and decided to go to work at Wallner Welding. He eventually owned the company. He and Marcy married in 1951. They spent 52 happy years together. Traveling was a passion they both shared. They loved to cook and he raised beautiful roses. When Marcy got sick, Roy sold the company and concentrated on being with her. They still traveled as often as they could, many times to Canada. He loved playing cards and jigsaw puzzles. There was always a puzzle sitting out on a table. He was an avid trap shooter.
Roy was a member to the Kitchee Gumee Club of Duluth, Scottish Rite, the Masons Ionic Lodge, Animal Allies and NRA.
Roy is preceded in death by his mother and father, Toni and Al; and wife, Marcella.
He will be dearly remembered and missed by nephew, Steve (Cindy) Carey, niece, Kris (Jim) Swoboda, niece, Anne Donahoe, niece, Sue Kyllonen (Audrey), nephew, David (Moe) Kyllonen, niece, Jane (Jon) Martinson; great nieces and great nephews and friends.
Memorials preferred to Solvay Hospice House or American Cancer Society.

This “Daughter of Texas” was born in El Paso, Texas on May 4,1953 and was a resident of Duluth most of her life. Allison was greeted in heaven by her parents, Allan C. and Beverly Churchill, sister, Terry Lee Churchill, her beloved doggie, Sparky and many family members and friends.
She is survived by her sister, Roberta (Bobbi) Pirkola and brother-in-law, Dean Pirkola; beloved great-niece, Taylor Pirkola and nephews, Brian (Nicole) Pirkola, Craig Himmelright, and Clayton Pirkola and family; many cousins and friends.
Allison will be remembered by us all as a kind, caring, generous and big-hearted soul, and the biggest Viking fan ever. She retired six years ago from her position in the City Attorney’s office at the City of Duluth after 40 years of service. Over the years, she loved to travel to many places with friends and her sis Bobbi. Vegas and Ixtapa were on the top of the list.
We are all certain, they have been preparing for you in Heaven Allison, and I would bet they have an abundance of E&J waiting to celebrate you home.

Obituary Preview: Arthur Christian Larsen Sr. passed on August 6th in the woods that he loved on his property in Saginaw at the age of 85. He was born in Duluth, Minnesota on October 12, 1933.
Art grew up in Saginaw and attended both Caribou Lake Elementary and Proctor High School. A veteran of the US Army, he served overseas in Germany before returning home to work at Conwed in Cloquet where he held many positions, working at that location (later USG) for over 40 years. Art was a former member of the Grand Lake Volunteer Fire Department and VFW posts 2560 in Twig and later 3979 in Cloquet. He was very proud of his family and his Norwegian heritage, enjoyed being in the woods and spending time at his log cabin on the Cloquet River, hunting deer and catching catfish. He also had a real gift for writing poetry and storytelling. Art enjoyed playing in his cribbage league for over 50 years and also threw in horseshoe leagues for several years.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, KayAnn, daughters Gayle (Mike) Weingart, Nita Larsen and son Art (Cheryl) Larsen. He was also “Papa” to 8 grandkids: Anna, Kelly and Matt Weingart, Ryan, Hannah and Katie Larsen, Gracie and Sarah Baker, brother Peter (Sharon) Larson, brother-in-law Leroy (Darla), sisters-in-law Muriel, Gladys (Hank), Monie (Gil), Nita and Donna, as well as many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Christine Larsen, brother Martin Larsen, Father and Mother-in-law, Edwin and Odele Peterson and 11 sisters and brothers-in-law.

Ted graduated from Central High School in 1944. He served on a minesweeper in the Navy during World War II in Guam. Following the war, his career was proudly spent as a Duluth Firefighter for 33 years, retiring in 1985. Ted was a long time member of the Duluth Archery Club, the Duluth Pistol Club, the United Northern Sportsman Club, and the National Rifle Association. His hobbies were many and varied. Ted was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt, fish and camp. He was passionate about firearms and reloading. Ted had an amazing gift in his ability to handcraft a multitude of items, some of which will be at the memorial service. His willingness to help out family and friends was a hallmark of his extraordinary life.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Riordan Marken.
He is survived by his three children, Dave (Virginia) Marken, California, Tim Marken, Duluth, Terri (Jim) Torkelson, Duluth. Ted is also survived his younger brother Don (Karla) Marken, Seattle, as well as 8 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.

He enlisted in the Minnesota Air National Guard upon completion of high school and served a distinguished 38 year career with the Duluth 148th Fighter Wing. He retired at the rank of Chief Master Sergeant, having received numerous recognitions and awards, locally and nationally. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion, the Air Force Sergeants Association, Disabled American Veterans Association (Life & Charter member) and the Enlisted Association. He faithfully served with the Duluth Honor Guard for the past 10 years and was a committed advocate for fellow service members, having served as a Guardian for Northland Honor Flights.
He married Patricia Helen Ellingsen on February 25, 1961 and they raised five daughters in Duluth, their lifelong home. He and Pat volunteered for the Duluth Playhouse and were members of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where Jerry served as a Session member. He was involved with the Northland Alzheimers Support and Dementia Friendly Duluth programs. Jerry enjoyed the outdoors and taught his family to enjoy the same. He coached youth softball, was a member of the Piedmont Ski Club and Duluth Police Volunteer Snowmobile Patrol. He enjoyed playing cribbage and participated in bowling leagues and many other civic organizations.
He is survived by his wife, Pat, of 58 years, and 5 daughters: Julie (Brad) Collander, Louanne (Phillip) Kaupa, Peggy Rouleau (Jeffrey Kaufmann), Gwen Rouleau (John Zieska), Holly Rouleau; sister, Mary Jo (Steven) Robak, brother-in-law Robert Ellingsen (Joyce), 10 grandchildren: Cody Collander, Heather (Steve) Lind, Kristina, Jonathon and Daniel Kaupa, Abbey, Alice and Anna Zieska, Morgann and Casey McCarthy and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Rodney, and his sister JoAnn Heffler-Wright.
