Helen Windham Jordan - July 08, 1942 - December 10, 2019

Departed: 12/10/2019 (Lamar)
Obituary Preview: Helen Windham Jordan passed away into her Heavenly home around noon on Tuesday, December 10th, 2019. She was able to celebrate with her late husband, Walter Lee “WL” Jordan, in Heaven, as December 10th was his birthday.
It’s difficult to put into words all that she was. When Jesus talked about the meek shall inherit the earth that describes her perfectly. Helen never met a stranger and was willing to love anyone and everyone she ever met. She would literally give you the shirt off her back if she thought you needed it. Helen was such a fantastic representation of unconditional love. She just loved loving people, much in the way her mother demonstrated that same love to her while she was growing up in Lamar, South Carolina.
At the tender age of 16, Helen married WL and shortly thereafter traveled with him to Germany. This was the first time she had ever left the state of South Carolina let alone the United States. Her first child, Joann, was born in Germany. A few of years later they returned to SC and Jon Edwin was born in Bishopville, SC. The next year Justin was born in Florence, SC. WL and Helen were not yet done though, as about 14 months later, on the island of Guam, they had their last child, another boy, Jeffery Reid.
Since WL was in the Air Force, they traveled to several locations with their four children. They had homes in Sumter, SC; Everett, Washington; Winston Salem, NC; and Myrtle Beach, SC where he retired from the service. They returned to their childhood home of Lamar, SC, where they lived together until January 27th, 2006 when WL passed away.
About a year later, Helen left South Carolina to go and live with Justin and his family in Dacula, GA. She has lived in Georgia for the past 11 years, meeting and being a blessing to a whole new group of people in Georgia. Since her youngest son, Jeff also lives in the area, Helen was able to be near 2 of her children and 6 of her grandchildren during the last 11 years of her life.
Helen loved so many people and was very crafty, making scarfs and jewelry for all her new friends and family. She was an active participant in the Lawrenceville, GA Senior Center attending events several times a week. Helen’s involvement at the Senior Center created opportunity to fellowship with people from her generation with many shared life experiences. She was a big hit there, as she had a passion for baking, which she passed down to her son, Jeff. She would often recruit him to make treats to share with her fellow Sr. Citizens, especially on her friend’s birthdays. If her son was not available, she would go to a grocery store and purchase a birthday cake for her friends.
Helen was a very special Lady and God was really showing off the day HE created her. She was an inspiration and treasure for all of her children and grandchildren. She was a great example of what it means to love unconditionally, never looking for anything in return, but just excited to share the Love of God with everyone HE brought into her path. She had a huge heart and a warm and gentle spirit that would absolutely light up every room she entered.
She will be missed by all who knew her and will be waiting in Heaven to greet many of them of whom she shared the love of her Savior, Jesus Christ.
I will close with her favorite Bible passage in both the King James Version and The Message. A Psalm of David (KJV)
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
HE maketh me to lie down in green pastures: HE leadeth me beside the still waters.
HE restoreth my soul: HE leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for HIS name sake.
Yea, though I walk in the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for THOU art with me; THY rod and THY staff they comfort me.
THOU preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: THOU anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. A David Psalm - Psalm 23 (The Message)
God, my shepherd! I don’t need a thing.
YOU have bedded me down in lush meadows, you find me quiet pools to drink from.
True to YOUR word, YOU let me catch breath and send me in the right direction.
Even when the way goes through Death Valley, I’m not afraid when YOU walk at my side.
YOUR trusty shepherd’s crook makes me feel secure.
YOU serve me a six-course dinner right in front of my enemies.
YOU revive my drooping head; my cup brims with blessing.
YOUR beauty and love chase after me every day of my life.
I’m back home in the house of God for the rest of my life.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the purpose of an obituary?

An obituary serves as a way to announce the passing of a loved one, share their life story, and provide details about their funeral or memorial service. It also gives friends and family a chance to pay tribute to the deceased and offer condolences to those who are grieving.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the family of the deceased, often with the help of a funeral home or mortuary. In some instances, a close friend or colleague may be asked to contribute to the writing process.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include a brief biography, notable achievements, and information about the funeral or memorial service.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the family's preferences. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a short paragraph.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications allow you to include a photo of the deceased with their obituary. This can be a nice way to personalize the tribute and help readers connect with the person being remembered.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online publication?

The submission process varies depending on the publication. Some newspapers have online forms or email addresses where you can send your obituary, while others may require you to contact them directly. Be sure to check their website or contact their obituary department for specific guidelines.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, word count, and other factors. Some newspapers offer free or low-cost obituaries, while others may charge by the line or word. Online obituary platforms may also charge a fee for their services.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, many people choose to write their own obituary in advance as a way to ensure that their life story is told accurately and in their own words. This can also be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on one's life and accomplishments.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

Can I include humor or personality in an obituary?

Absolutely! An obituary should reflect the personality and spirit of the person being remembered. Including humorous anecdotes or quirky details can help bring their story to life and make the tribute more engaging.

How do I handle sensitive or difficult information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive or difficult aspects of the person's life that you're not sure how to address in the obituary, it's best to err on the side of caution and focus on their positive qualities and achievements. You may also consider consulting with other family members or a trusted advisor for guidance.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial information in an obituary?

Yes! Many families choose to include information about charitable donations or memorial funds in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased and continue their legacy.

How long after someone passes away should I wait before publishing an obituary?

The timing of when to publish an obituary varies depending on cultural and personal preferences. In general, it's best to wait until after the funeral or memorial service has taken place, but before too much time has passed since the person's passing.

Can I republish an obituary at a later date?

In some cases, yes! If you want to reprint an obituary on a special anniversary or milestone date, many publications will allow you to do so for a small fee or with permission from the original publisher.

What if I need to make corrections or changes to an already published obituary?

If you need to make corrections or changes to an already published obituary, contact the publication directly as soon as possible. They will guide you through their correction process and work with you to get the updated version published.

Can I create an online memorial or tribute page instead of publishing an obituary?

Yes! Online memorial pages are becoming increasingly popular as a way to share memories and tributes with a wider audience. These pages can remain active for years to come, allowing friends and family to continue sharing stories and photos.

How do I ensure that my loved one's obituary is preserved for future generations?

You can preserve your loved one's obituary by saving a physical copy, taking a screenshot of the online version, or creating a digital archive. You may also consider creating a scrapbook or memory book with copies of the obituary and other memorabilia.

What if I'm struggling with writing an obituary due to grief or emotional distress?

If you're finding it difficult to write an obituary due to grief or emotional distress, don't hesitate to reach out for support. Consider enlisting the help of a trusted friend or family member, or seeking guidance from a professional counselor or therapist.

Can I include quotes, poems, or lyrics in an obituary?

How do I handle conflicting opinions within the family about what should be included in an obituary?

Alternatively, you can simply omit any uncertain details and focus on celebrating your loved one's life and legacy.

Can I create multiple versions of an obituary for different audiences?

Yes! You may want to create different versions of an obituary tailored to specific audiences, such as coworkers, friends, or community groups. This can help ensure that each group feels seen and acknowledged in their own unique way.

How do I ensure that my loved one's legacy lives on beyond their passing?
