Obituary Preview: Gwen L. Lacoske, 55, of Meriden, passed away on April 2, 2020. She was born in Meriden on July 10, 1964, a daughter of Anne Bystrek Lacoske and the late Jere Lacoske. Besides her mother Anne, she is survived by her loving daughters Jessica Fedina and Ashley Gudrian, both of Middletown, and brothers Jere Lacoske and his wife Koren of Waterford, and Brett Lacoske and his wife Kelley of Deep River.
Gwen graduated from The School of Hairdressing and Cosmetology at H.C. Wilcox High School, which was an early showing of her creativity in life. She had a passion for baking and was an amazing cake decorator; there was never a birthday without a homemade cake. She loved holidays; a time with lots of decorations and even more gifts, a trait she passed on to her two daughters, who were her world, and was always doing her best to make those days special even when times were tough. She loved with everything she had, even when she didn’t have a lot. That’s one of the most beautiful things that moms can do; make the most out of the least, and Gwen had that superpower. She was always making things and taking on D.I.Y projects and was always eager to share her knowledge with others.
One of her best and most notable traits, besides her great-smelling lotions and perfumes, was her sense of humor; she was always the funniest person in the room and joked about everything. She loved to make people laugh, whether it was a stranger she met while working as a veterinarian, or her own family and friends. She would remember the names of all the pets and their owners who came in, and loved to crack up her co-workers. Taking care to make sure that each person and the animals that she loved felt safe and welcome was just her nature, and she prided herself on the relationship that she had with each of her clients.
Gwen loved music; she loved pop music from all decades, but Lynyrd Skynyrd was her absolute favorite. She loved the beach as well, Rocky Neck was a place of many momentous occasions in her life. All of these things make up a woman who was such a strong person, who gave these beautiful and amazing traits to her daughters to carry on. People see Gwen in her children, and those things are often the things people love most about them; what came from mom. She was like that. She gave all the best parts of herself to those around her.

After graduating from Meriden High School in 1956 she attended Southern Connecticut State College and completed both Bachelor and Master of Science degrees.
Marilyn was the beloved wife of the late Gerhard M. Boettger. They married in 1970 and resided in Wallingford, Connecticut. A loving mother and sister, Marilyn is survived by her faithful daughters Kara Boettger and Lisa Boettger; step-daughter Gerda Leveille and her husband Patrick; and brother Charles “Bud” Gould and his wife Patricia. She was predeceased by her step-daughter Helga Glynn and her husband Thomas.
Marilyn worked as a caring teacher for over 25 years for the State of Connecticut and for Kodman’s Small World Nursery School of Wallingford, where she was fondly known as “Mrs. Lyn”. Later in her career she shared her love and knowledge of flowers and plants as a salesperson, consultant, and designer at Tower Farms Garden Center of Cheshire, Connecticut. In retirement, she was the devoted caregiver of her husband, Gerhard.
Throughout her life Marilyn was a talented artist who painted and sketched. As a child and as an adult, with family and with friends, she spent countless summers at the Connecticut and Rhode Island shorelines. Marilyn was a voracious reader and crossword puzzle enthusiast, like her mother. She was a passionate fan of the New York Yankees and of UConn Basketball, especially the Women’s team. In her own words, “Remember my life, remember me for who I was, and how I lived my life. I’ve tried to be a good, kind, and helpful person. I’ve loved a lot of people and I want them to remember me with love.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who need to know about the funeral arrangements, memorial services, and other details. They also help to notify people who may not have been aware of the person's passing.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral services, memorial donations, and condolences.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it's recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important information. A good rule of thumb is to aim for 100-200 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and newspapers allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more meaningful.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to find out their submission guidelines and deadlines. You may need to provide the written obituary, along with any photos or other supporting materials.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes! Writing your own obituary can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your story is told in your own words. Just be sure to share it with your loved ones so they know where to find it when the time comes.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber or formal. Including personal stories or humorous anecdotes can help capture the personality and spirit of the deceased.

How do I handle errors or corrections in an obituary?

If you notice an error in an already-published obituary, contact the publication or platform immediately to request a correction. Be prepared to provide proof of the error and any necessary corrections.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial information in an obituary?

Yes! Many people choose to include information about memorial donations or charitable contributions in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased and support a cause close to their heart.

What is an online obituary platform?

An online obituary platform is a website or service that allows users to create, publish, and share digital obituaries. These platforms often offer additional features such as guest books, condolence messages, and photo sharing.

How long do online obituaries stay online?

The duration that an online obituary remains available varies depending on the platform or website. Some may keep them online indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period of time.

Can I share an obituary on social media?

Yes! Many online obituary platforms allow you to share the obituary directly on social media platforms like Facebook or Twitter. This can help spread the word quickly and reach a wider audience.

What is a guest book or condolence message?

A guest book or condolence message is a digital space where friends and family can leave messages of condolence, share memories, or express sympathy for the loss. These messages are often attached to the online obituary.

How do I respond to condolence messages?

You're not obligated to respond to every condolence message individually. However, acknowledging them with a collective thank-you note or response can be appreciated by those who took the time to express their sympathy.

Can I include quotes or poems in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes or poems that resonate with the deceased's personality or values can add depth and meaning to the obituary.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary?

Drawing up an obituary can be an emotional task. If you're finding it difficult, consider enlisting the help of a friend or family member. Funeral homes may also offer guidance or writing services.

Can I update an existing obituary?

In some cases, yes! If new information becomes available or there are changes to funeral arrangements, you may be able to update the existing obituary. Check with the publication or platform for their policies on updates.

How do I ensure accuracy in an obituary?

What if I want to keep the funeral private?

If you prefer not to publicly announce funeral arrangements or details about the deceased's passing, you can opt for a private funeral service. In this case, you might choose not to publish an obituary at all.]
