Gary Charles Jones - May 28, 1952 - April 18, 2024

Departed: 04/18/2024 (Edmonds)
Obituary Preview: Gary Jones, an exceptional spouse, parent, and respected leader passed away on April 18, 2024.
Gary was born May 28, 1952, in Spokane, WA to Bud and Bette Jones, where he spent his days playing alongside his sisters Julie and Susan. The family moved to Edmonds, WA when Gary was in the 6th grade where he met his lifelong friend Tim Mead. Together they were shining stars for Edmonds High School winning Conference Championships in both football and baseball their senior year. Gary went on to play baseball at WSU on scholarship, eventually graduating from UW, however, if asked he would always say he was a ‘Coug’ at heart. Running was one of Gary's passions, and he did it every day for more than 43 years, no matter the weather or the knee surgery he had the day before.
Gary was an ambitious and driven Entrepreneur. In 1976 at 24 years old, he combined his love of business development and travel founding Westgate Travel with the mission of providing exceptional personalized service. His laser focus on client relationships propelled the agencies successful growth mainly through referrals from clients who valued the outstanding service. This included the Seattle Mariners Baseball Team, a faithful client that Gary took pride in serving for many years. Gary enjoyed working alongside his sister Julie for 38 years at Westgate Travel. In addition to running Westgate Travel, Gary was a founding member and director at the Bank of Washington.
Gary’s greatest joy and achievement was his family. He met his soulmate Kathy, and together they were unstoppable; whether it was business matters, raising children, or gardening, they could overcome any challenge as a team. He and Kathy raised two children Sarah and Cameron and he was their biggest and proudest fan. He would drop anything at any time to help with even the most minor issues any one of them had. Gary loved coaching Cam in baseball, and cheering Sarah on as she rounded the bases in softball. The family loved traveling together near and far. Later in life, Gary assisted his son in building a successful auction business in Post Falls, Idaho. If there was a business-related question Gary was always the first call, knowing that he would have all the right answers.
In 2000 Gary and Kathy purchased property the family had homesteaded generations before in Troy Montana. It is a magical place they were proud to share with their friends and family. There they created and built their dream home and lives. Gary spent his days outside grooming the immaculate lawn, hunting with his son, cutting firewood in his beloved army truck “Dewey”, and picking huckleberries for countless hours with his dog Braco. He delighted in watching his four grandkids swim in the lake, play in the treehouse, and shoot squirrels in the woods. For all who were so lucky to see Gary in Troy, you can close your eyes and picture his proud smile that proved how much he loved it there.
Above all Gary was a person of remarkable integrity. In a distinctly old school way, his word was his bond. His devotion to family, his wife, children and grandchildren was an inspiration to all who crossed his path. He faced his decline with grace and dignity, with the support of his devoted family who considered caring for him an honor. Whether you knew Gary for a moment or a lifetime, you were affected in a positive way.
Gary was taken from us too early by a terrible disease that has impacted far too many families. The family requests that in lieu of sending flowers, you contribute to a cancer research of your preference to help us discover a cure. We will be holding another Celebration of Life in Montana around the 4th of July. Dates and times to come.

Hugo Antoon Draye - January 21, 1943 - April 15, 2024

Departed: 04/15/2024 (Edmonds)
Obituary Preview: Hugo A. Draye was born the eldest of seven children in Leuven, Belgium to Lily and Jacques Draye. After earning a master’s degree in electrical engineering in Leuven, Hugo immigrated to the United States in 1968 to work at Boeing on development of the 747. His next move was a fateful one; Hugo took a new job in Chicago, where he met Mary Ann Harvey, who would become his wife for the next 52 years. Hugo and Mary Ann soon moved back to the Northwest, where Hugo joined the computer communications division at John Fluke Manufacturing. He remained there until his retirement in 2009. In his role as product manager, Hugo traveled the world. His fluency in five languages proved helpful. But he also developed a love for his adoptive home country and was proud to become an American citizen in 2008.
For all of his professional success, Hugo most valued his faith and family. He and Mary Ann had three children, whom they dubbed their “treasures.” On many occasions, Hugo would return from a business trip and immediately head to a basketball or baseball game, track or swim meet, or a Boy Scout event. Family vacations focused on visiting extended family, whether in Belgium or with the Peterman family at Lake Chelan.
Heart disease struck Hugo over 20 years ago. He heroically faced and recovered from bypass surgery, an implanted heart pump, and eventually a heart transplant. Throughout his health challenges, Hugo remained firm in his faith and placed his trust in the Lord and his health care team. He and his family are ever grateful to the University of Washington Heart Institute for their lifesaving care.
As an active member of Saint Mark parish in Shoreline, Hugo served as lecturer for many years. He also served on the Board of Bishop Blanchet Hiigh School.
A gentle, kind man with a beautiful smile, Hugo always found the positive in life. He enjoyed family gatherings, good wine, Belgian chocolates, Italian food, going for walks, and making coffee about three times per day.
Hugo is survived by his wife, Mary Ann, sons Anthony (Mary) and Dominic Draye, daughter Marie Masenga, five wonderful grandchildren, six brothers and sisters, and a host of extended family and friends who will miss him dearly.
Gifts in memory of Hugo can be made to St Mark Catholic School, where Hugo sacrificed to educate all three of his children and of which he remained a supporter throughout his life (www.stmss.org; “Donate” at top right).

Departed: 04/08/2024 (Edmonds)
Obituary Preview: Kirk G. Reddie was born in 1955 in Richland, WA to John and Sylvia Reddie. In 1958, with his baby brother in tow, the family moved to their Shoreline home, where Kirk used the double lot to build his dream house where he lived the last 20 years of his life.
Kirk graduated from Shoreline High School in 1973. Following high school, he went to the University of Washington where he received a BA in accounting. He then picked up his CPA license and later a MBA, also at UW. Kirk loved to learn, and he excelled in school. In high school, he was a member of the Honor Society, a strong wrestler, and a renowned trumpet player and drum major in his beloved band. Kirk went on to play in the UW Marching Band and inspired those around him to share their talents. One of his friends describe him as ‘large, blond, strong, handsome – Kirk looked like his Swedish Viking ancestors’.
He always had a smile to give, and his laugh was contagious. Growing up, at Christmas he could not read the Herman Humor Book he received until the end as he would laugh so hard and even though no one knew what Kirk was laughing at watching the pure joy his face caused everyone to laugh until they cried. Kirk had two passions in life, writing and Model trains. He was blessed that he was able to combine these two and was editor and publisher of N Scale Model Railroading Magazine publishing 117 issues over 19 ½ years before converting to an online version in March of 2020. In the last few years, Kirk expanded his love of writing and joined a screen writing zoom group. He had so many stories to tell and would talk for hours regarding them. Kirk in his own words said, “Hobbies are great in many ways; in one sense they just don’t matter and in another they really reflect who we aspire to be.”
Kirk passed peacefully at Northwest Hospital April 8, 2024. Kirk is survived by his brother Bill Reddie (Sherry), sister Elaine (Kerry) Raschkow, nephew’s Clinton and Max Reddie, Phillip (Alicia) Raschkow, his niece Amanda Raschkow, step-niece Vanessa and many friends (some friendships that lasted over 50 – 60 years). Theus Lee Doolittle - April 04, 1931 - March 21, 2024

Departed: 03/21/2024 (Edmonds)
Obituary Preview: Captain Theus "Lee" Doolittle passed away on Thursday, March 21, 2024, with his daughter by his side.
Lee was born in Los Angeles, California, on April 4th, 1931, to Theus and Helen Doolittle He grew up in Burbank, California, and still had a soft spot in his heart for his hometown.
Lee was involved in the Boy Scouts, earning his Eagle Scout award in 1945 and attending the 1950 National Boy Scout Jamboree as an Assistant Scout Master. Boy Scouts instilled a love of camping and fishing trips. Lee was incredibly passionate about Yosemite, where worked in the Lodge kitchen in the summer and on breaks throughout his college career. He spent his free time hiking around the park including hiking the back side of Half Dome. Lee continued to share that love of Yosemite with his family throughout his life, though his family lacked the same ambition of hiking Half Dome.
Growing up he excelled in athletics, especially High School baseball and swimming which led him on his career path. Lee graduated from Burbank High in 1949 and went to John Muir College. He attended UCLA as a "contract" NROTC Midshipman, receiving his BS in 1954, an MS in Physical Education, and his Officer Commission in 1955. He went on to earn his Ph.D. in Physical Education at USC.
His lifelong Naval service began with active duty on the USS Electron in Japan and the Philippines, followed by service on the USS Locator cruising the coast of California. Lee continued his military service in the Naval Reserve, where he attained the rank of Captain. His numerous billets included Reserve Gunnery Officer of USS Colahan, Commanding Officer of the Selected Reserve Crew for USS Orleck, and Commanding Officer of YR-84, the largest reserve unit in the Thirteenth Naval District. Lee served as President of the Puget Sound Chapter of the Naval Reserve Association and was a member of the Naval Institute. He also attended short courses at the National Defense University and the Naval War College. Captain Doolittle retired from the Navy Reserve in 1985.
Upon his return from active duty, Lee met his wife of 59 years, Janice (Jan) Turley. His cousin, Robert, was the principal of the school where Jan taught, and he introduced them. After a whirl wind romance, they were married in April of 1957. They had one child, Semie, and one grandchild, Malissa.
In addition to having an outstanding career in the Navy, Lee had an impressive teaching career. Returning to civilian life after active duty, he taught and coached in secondary schools in Southern California while earning his Ph.D. from the University of Southern California. He joined the California State, Los Angeles faculty in 1962 and held visiting appointments at the Santa Barbara and Davis Campuses of the University of California. Ready for another adventure, Lee moved his family to Edmonds, Washington, in 1970. He took a position at the University of Washington teaching Physiology of Exercise and Kinesiology, and he retired from there in 1991. Lee thought the world of his family and was extremely proud of the accomplishments of his only granddaughter, particularly her marriage to a man in the service. He was delighted to have a grandson-in-law in the Coast Guard; family gatherings were frequently spent discussing boats and the seagoing services. Lee combined his passion for travel and his family by planning numerous vacations to Yosemite, Hawaii, and Florida, along with a few cruises. Lee traveled on his own as well, loving to stay at the Hale Koa for several weeks at a time. He loved to take his family out and was always quick to tell the wait staff he would be “The Banker."
He has volunteered throughout his lifetime in various positions and organizations. Most recently, Lee was a volunteer for the Edmonds Chamber of Commerce Cabin Visitors Center, a position he greatly enjoyed.
Lee is survived by his daughter Semie, son-in-law Larry, granddaughter Malissa, grandson-in-law Colin, and brother Bill.
His family would like to thank the 5th-floor staff of Edmonds Swedish Hospital and the staff at Sunrise Assisted Living of Edmonds for Lee's kind and compassionate care.
Gifts in memory of Lee can be made to the US Coast Guard Foundation https://coastguardfoundation.org/# or the Yosemite Conservancy - https://yosemite.org.

Kenneth William Haydock - July 18, 1946 - March 20, 2024

Departed: 03/20/2024 (Edmonds)
Obituary Preview: Father Kenneth W. “Ken” Haydock died on March 20, 2024, at his home in Greenhaven Senior Care in Edmonds. Father Ken was born in Seattle, Washington, on July 18, 1946, to Frank Haydock and Margaret McClenehan Haydock. He was the fourth of five children. He grew up on Capitol Hill in Seattle where his father owned a café. Across the street from his childhood home was St. Joseph Parish, where he worshiped with his family, attended grade school, and came to love the Sisters of the Holy Names. Under their care, seeds for a priestly vocation were planted in him, and he entered the Oregon Province of Jesuits for a brief time after graduating from Seattle Prep. Later, he received his BA from Seattle University. He went to seminary at and obtained a master’s degree from Catholic University of America. He was a schoolteacher and librarian for many years at Seattle Prep and Kennedy Catholic high schools and was an example of someone whose vocation to priesthood ultimately came from serving as a lay minister in the church first.
Father Ken was ordained on December 6, 1980, at Sacred Heart Parish in Bellevue by Archbishop Raymond Hunthausen. His first assignment was as an associate pastor at Sacred Heart Parish in Bellevue in 1980. He went on to be an associate pastor for St. Mary Magdalen Parish in Everett before taking his first assignment as pastor in 1985 at St. Joseph Parish in Vancouver. This was a challenging assignment as plans to build a new church had been thwarted before his arrival. His hard work ethic and creativity paid off in short order. Father Ken got to work right away getting out and conducting “neighborhood meetings.” By the fall of that first year, he had won over parishioners and put together a new parish building plan.
During Father Ken’s time at St. Joseph, the parish grew to the second largest parish in the archdiocese. The celebration of the Mass was very important to Father Ken, and he worked diligently to build a music and choral program that eventually became “Bravo Vancouver Chorale,” resulting in several CDs produced and the chorale making performance tours in Europe. In his time at St. Joseph, he initiated a ministry to seniors called the “Golden Fellowship,” bringing the seniors of the parish together for prayer and companionship. Honoring the sacrament of matrimony, he started the annual “Celebrate Marriage Mass” and dinner specifically honoring those celebrating milestone anniversaries each year.
After two terms in Vancouver, Father Ken was appointed pastor of Holy Rosary Parish in Edmonds in 1996, an appointment he would enjoy for 20 years. It was during these years that Holy Rosary would become one of the largest and most vibrant parishes and parish schools in the archdiocese. Under his leadership, a new parish hall was built.
Father Ken was a priest who had a big heart and a deep compassion for the sick, the homebound, the poor and the dying. He would carry around a small spiral flip notebook in his breast pocket to write down people’s prayer intentions or their names so that he could include them in his daily prayers. He was always “on call” and would drop whatever he was doing day or night to go to someone’s bedside when they were dying. It was no surprise then that Archbishop Brunett appointed him Vicar for Charities, chairman of the Board of Directors of Catholic Community Services and Archdiocesan Housing Authority.
Father Ken was a collector of books and fine art. He often said he was “a man of few tastes – only the best.” In 2014, he donated his 10,000-volume philosophy and theology library to Saint John Paul II Seminary in Washington D.C.
In 36 years of assigned priestly ministry, Father Ken only had five parish assignments. It was a testament to his loyalty and dedication to the People of God whom he served. He seemed to truly love everything about diocesan priestly ministry: teaching, preaching, pastoral care of those who were poor and vulnerable, and serving on governing committees, projects, and consultative bodies. He could be comfortable in a classroom of 1st graders and yet thrived in shepherding a couple through an annulment process. He seemed to see the Lord Jesus in every person he encountered and would do everything to ensure they were given compassionate care.
Father Ken’s last pastoral assignment was at St. Bridget in Seattle before his health necessitated taking senior priest status in 2018. He spent his last few years in care facilities, where he found being the recipient of care challenging. Yet, he made many new friends in these settings, with his charm and intelligence which could not be inhibited by physical limitations. Special thanks to the care teams at Ida Culver, Fairwinds – Brighton Court, Greenhaven, and Beth Eagen and Associates for their loving care and dedication to Father Ken’s needs in these last years of his life. Fathe Ken’s life was marked by St. Joseph, growing up in St. Joseph Parish in Seattle, building the “new” church at St. Joseph Parish in Vancouver, and spending part of his last full day on earth, March 19th – the Feast of St. Joseph – with brother priests at the spring luncheon for senior priests in Edmonds. Let us pray through the intercession of St. Joseph for the repose of this wonderful priest for God and man for others.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let Your perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul, and all the souls of the faithful departed, rest in peace.
He is predeceased by his parents, Margaret and Frank Haydock, and brothers Daniel Toner and David Toner. Survived by sisters Roberta Brown and Sister Linda Haydock, SNJM, nieces, nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews.

Barbara Jean Truax - June 14, 1941 - March 17, 2024

Departed: 03/17/2024 (Edmonds)
Obituary Preview: Barbara (Barb) Truax (82) of Edmonds, the older child of Orville and Emily Buerge, was born in N Chicago, IL. In 1949, she moved with her family to Alderwood Manor, WA where she grew to adulthood in the family home built on a 5-acre wooded property. Barb was an accomplished student while attending schools in Alderwood, Lynnwood and Edmonds. During her senior year (1959) she served as a teacher’s assistant in history. Following graduation she worked at a business in downtown Seattle before enrolling at Seattle University (SU).
On winter break from SU, Barb volunteered to chaperone a high school ski trip. That day trip turned into an over-nighter when her bus broke down, its riders transferred to another bus which proceed to get stuck in the snow and was unable to return home late the next morning. Barb had such a great time with those students that upon resuming classes at SU she expanded her majors to include both business and education. On graduation she received two degrees and a teaching certificate. She later returned to SU to obtain her Master’s in Public Administration together with a principal’s certificate.
In 1966, following graduation Barb married Mike Truax, a former high school classmate. Their 57-year marriage produced sons Joel and Andrew and homes in Alderwood and Edmonds. Barb’s career was to include teaching many business and English subjects over a 33-year period spent at Edmonds, Lynnwood and Scriber high schools. Barb proved to be an exciting and enthusiastic teacher who believed a 60-hour week was the minimum requirement for her job.
As a youth Barb envied her father’s stories of travel to foreign countries acquired while he served as a navy bandmaster. As an adult she developed a thirst to travel everywhere she could. Her husband also proved to be an enthusiastic traveler. Beginning with their honeymoon Barb traveled near and far exploring nearly all of North America and making multiple trips to Asia, Europe, Australia and Russia. By the time Covid had arrived Barb’s travel bucket list had been completed and she stopped further exploration. Her brain was stuffed with memories, experience and knowledge and her household was stuffed with souvenirs.
Barb and Mike shared their time together both at home and their seasonal cabin on Lake Conconully. For Mike it was opportunity to fly fish many surrounding lakes and for Barb it was more an opportunity to decorate both home and yard, to read and to kick back with newly found leisure time. She truly loved the residents of Okanogan County and the values they embraced. For 26 years both could hardly wait to open the cabin for the season.
Barb had several hobbies at which she excelled. Family and friends considered Barb to be the master decorator. Whether it be gifts, greeting cards or indoor household space it required being decorated. Every birthday, major and minor holidays was recognized with special detail. She took great delight spreading good cheer. Barb was also a serious reader and collector of books. Books in her houses were displayed in wall-long floor to ceiling bookcases with many other books hiding in other rooms or in storage units.
Barb was proceeded in death by her parents Orville E Buerge and Emily (Hibel) Buerge and her brother-in-law William F Truax. Barb leaves behind her husband Michael R Truax of Edmonds, sons Joel G Truax (Jody) of Bayview, ID and Andrew G Truax of Edmonds, brother David M Buerge of Everett, sisters-in-law Jeanice E Bly of Burlington, Kathleen M Truax of Olympia and Elizabeth A Templeton (Ted) of Fremont CA, brother-in-law David R Truax (Glenda) of Edmonds, her 10 nieces and 10 nephews and her very close friends Vicki McBride and Candy Halligan.
Funeral services to be held at 10:30 pm on March 28, 2024 at Holyrood Cemetery’s Mausoleum located at 205 NE 205th St, Shoreline, WA 98155 with internment to follow. Funeral arrangements and information provided by Beck’s Tribute Center, Edmonds, WA.

Gerard Michael Stromberg - August 20, 1941 - March 08, 2024

Departed: 03/08/2024 (Edmonds)
Obituary Preview: Gerard "Jerry" Stromberg passed away peacefully in his sleep the morning of March 8th, 2024. He is survived by Eleanor, his wife of 58 years, his son Matthew and wife Kristine, daughter Krista and husband Hyun, his grandsons Logan and Joshua, and his sister Kathleen and husband Ben. He has too many nieces and nephews to count easily, however the most recent addition is his great, great, great nephew Elliot to the family tree.
Jerry, known as "Uncle Jerry" or "Saint Jerry" amongst family and friends, greeted everyone with a smile and a gracious disposition. His daily companion was a dry sense of humor which he employed to great effect when least expected. He was always a figure of humble strength, honesty and integrity being foundation pieces to every act or decision. He lived his faith through actions, and they were a testament to how deeply he believed in doing the right thing versus doing the easy thing.
Jerry's professional life was spent as a locksmith, serving his customers with the same principles that defined him as an iconic figure in his personal life. He enjoyed the work and crafted each task to be a complete effort, professionally done.
Jerry was an accomplished fisherman and spent much time on the water fishing for salmon and other saltwater species. He took the same care and pride with his fishing tackle as he did with everything else in life, a crafted effort. Fishing was a recreation that provided healthy exercise both spiritually and emotionally. It was an activity he could share with friends and family, spending quality time with people away from the distractions of our electronic world.
He enjoyed popcorn, and when he made popcorn for the family it became an epic event. There was an intricate process incorporated into the effort, and the resulting popcorn was cooked and seasoned to perfection. He made enough to last for days.
He served his country in the Coast Guard, initially in active duty and the remaining years as a reservist. He was honorably discharged after 35 years of service. The Coast Guard was a passion for him. He enjoyed the experience the Coast Guard provided and was enriched by the responsibilities of serving others in such a tangible way. Every vacation would involve a visit to the local Coast Guard station, provided one was nearby. We were occasionally regaled with Coast Guard stories and they frequently involved his buddy Walt Doolittle, aka "Dude", as they served together for the majority of their careers.
Jerry valued family above all else. He took great pride in his wife, children and grandchildren; his look of pride upon hearing about an accomplishment will resonate with us for the rest of our lives and will strengthen us for the challenges to come. He was an unassuming, towering figure within the family that was always approachable for advice. He would tell you the truth, often things you didn't want to hear but always delivered with respect and absent of malice. If things didn't go right, and a mistake was made, he stood with you, allowing you to deal with the issue but not alone. He wouldn't fix the problem for you but would show confidence in you, lending his strength, giving you the confidence and fortitude to complete the task.
He was a very special man.
