Obituary Preview: Keith H. Holm, 78, of Tripoli, died suddenly, Thursday, April 11, 2024, at his home.
A memorial visitation will be held from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM, Monday, April 15, 2024, at Becker & Son Funeral Home in Tripoli. Military rites will be provided by Brandenburg-Krueger Post #4013, V.F.W. of Tripoli following the visitation.
Keith Howard, son of Lorenz “Ducky” and Alberta (Alverson) Holm was born May 5, 1945, in Clarion, Iowa. Keith attended elementary school and jr. high in Clarion until the family moved to Tripoli in the mid to late 1950’s. He completed his education in Tripoli, graduating from Tripoli High School in 1963. Keith served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam Conflict from 1964 until being honorably discharged in 1966. Upon his return home, he began working at Nestle in Waverly in the maintenance department, retiring in 2000, following a thirty-four year career. On December 21, 1979, Keith was united in marriage with Betty Voigts at Grace Lutheran Church in Tripoli. Keith served as an EMT on the Tripoli Ambulance Service for eighteen years, was a member of the Brandenburg-Krueger Post #4013, V.F.W. of Tripoli and Ducks Unlimited. Keith enjoyed hunting and camping with family and friends. He also enjoyed traveling and cheering for his grandkids at their sporting events.
Keith is survived by his wife, Betty of Tripoli; four children, Jody (Rhonda) Niehaus of Lisbon, Kelly (Jeff) Sankey of Oran, Tammy (Adam) Kaufman of Fairbank, and Lance (Josh) Holm of Gladstone, Missouri; eight grandchildren, Kenedrick (Kenzie) Saulsberry, Kierra Saulsberry, Brady Maurer, Tyler Niehaus, Kinley Saulsberry, Trever Niehaus, Wally Kaufman, and Rachel Kaufman; two great-grandchildren, Malani Smith and Kyrie Saulsberry; sister, Sharon Darrow of Colorado Springs, Colorado; brother, Mike Holm of Tripoli; brother-in-law, Bob (Ardith) Voigts of Clarksville; nephew, Brandon Holm of Aplington; niece, Lori Edeker of Allison; and cat, Gracie.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two infant granddaughters, Megan and Morgan Sankey; and sister-in-law, Penny Holm.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 3:30 PM, Sunday, March 17, 2024, at St. John's United Church of Christ (Siegel), rural Waverly with Rev. Dr. Susan Weier officiating. The service will be available via livestream on the Church’s Facebook Page. Inurnment will follow at the Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM, Saturday, March 16th at Becker & Son Funeral Home in Tripoli and for one hour preceding services at the Church on Sunday. Memorials may be made to the family for later designation.
Jolyn Marie, daughter of Herman and Leona (Bergmann) Mueller was born August 29, 1953, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. She was baptized on September 11, 1953, and confirmed on March 19, 1967, both at St. John’s United Church of Christ (Siegel), rural Waverly. Jolyn received her education in the Tripoli School System and graduated from Tripoli High School in 1971. Following graduation, she continued her education at La’ James Cosmetology in Mason City. Jolyn was a hairdresser for over fifty years, starting her career in Denver prior to working in Tripoli and owned Jolyn’s Haircare for twenty-three years, retiring in May of 2023. On December 31, 2005, she was united in marriage with David Schwarze. Jolyn was a member of Faith United Church of Christ in Tripoli, serving as President of the Congregation and was a lifetime member of St. John’s United Church of Christ (Siegel), where she was a Sunday School Teacher, member of the Altar Guild and helped on many fundraisers. She was also a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary in Tripoli, again assisting on many fundraisers. Jolyn was a Boy Scout Den Mother and taught tap dancing lessons for several years. She enjoyed fishing, trips to Canada and Minnesota with David, annual Mueller family reunions, and enjoyed a good prank now and again. Jolyn had many things that brought her joy but her greatest joy came from time spent with family.
Jolyn is survived by her son, Joshua Seelhammer of Charles City; brother, Allen (Rudine) Mueller of Circle Pines, Minnesota; sisters-in-law, Myrna Mueller of Plainfield, Tamara Rosol of Frederika, Sue Schwarze of Tripoli, and Diane Krumm of Anamosa; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and extended family and loving friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, David Schwarze on July 30, 2020; brother, Eldean Mueller; sister, Marlene (Alvin) Sassman; and nephew, Michael Mueller.

Larry Lee, son of Arthur and Maida (Sperry) Kammeyer was born January 23, 1947, at Allen Hospital in Waterloo, IA. He was baptized at the family’s home in rural Fairbank, IA on April 20, 1947, and confirmed at St John Lutheran Church in Frederika, IA. On June 14, 1970, he was united in marriage with Carol Stahlhut at Faith United Church of Christ in Tripoli.
Larry graduated from Tripoli High School in 1965. Following graduation, he furthered his education at the Universal Trade School in Omaha, NE, receiving a Mechanical Certification. Larry served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Conflict from September 1966 until his honorable discharge in September 1968. While serving his country, he was head of the Wrecker Operations in the Department of Mechanics, earning the rank of Specialist E-5. Upon his honorable discharge, Larry furthered his education in Dearborn, MI, becoming a Ford Registered Technician. Larry completed his educational journey at Hickline GM Diesel School in Des Moines, earning a certification in Diesel Mechanics.
Larry began his professional career at Ambrose Ford Garage in Tripoli as a mechanic, he later worked at International Trucks in Waterloo and Figanbaum Trucking as a diesel mechanic. Larry owned Larry’s Auto Service in Sumner, was also a Meter Technician and Machinist for Dick’s Petroleum/Machine Shop in Tripoli. He was Owner/Operator of a semi-truck and leased to Western Transport in Waterloo and then later Figanbaum Trucking in Tripoli when retired in 2012.
He was a long-time member of Faith United Church of Christ, where he served on the church council, was a volunteer firefighter for fifteen years for the Tripoli Fire Department and was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. in Tripoli. He enjoyed fishing, boating, camping, dancing and music. Larry was a skilled organist / accordionist and enjoyed playing for family and friends in their home. In their retirement, Carol and Larry spent winters in Texas.
Larry is survived by his wife Carol of Tripoli: children Ken (Leian) Kammeyer of Cedar Falls and Carolyn (Kevin Molstrom) Sparks of Hastings, MN; seven grandchildren, Austin (Kaitlin) Kammeyer, Alek (Kerigan) Kammeyer, Ayren (Mace Sanford) Kammeyer, J. Ryan Sparks, Ashley (Brian) Buss, and Alexis and Luke Molstrom; five great-grandchildren, Piper Kammeyer, Estella Kammeyer, and Finley, Beckett, and Maddyn Buss; a brother Paul (Karol) Kammeyer of Clarksville, TN; brother-in-law Keith Stahlhut of Tripoli, sisters-in-law, Karen (Jeff) Chapin, Jeanne (Joel) Arends both Clear Lake, and Sandra (Heath) Evens of Independence, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his mother and father-in-law, Marlys and Melvin Stahlhut.

Mark Allen Steward - December 04, 1953 - February 22, 2024

Obituary Preview: Mark Allen Steward, 70, of Rochester Minnesota, passed away on February 22, 2024 after a battle with Parkinson’s Disease.
He is preceded in death by his father, Walter Vernon Steward. He left behind his mother, Joann Steward, sister, Julie (Todd) Holm, and brother, Jon Steward, cousin, Kathy (Truog) Fink, cousin Steve Truog, and uncle Gary (Diane) Damon.
Mark was a kind and gentle soul. He treated everyone with compassion. He loved spending time with his family and will be remembered for the love he had for each of them. He enjoyed trying his luck on the lottery now and then, but it was those who he truly cared about that felt like they had won the lottery. He will be greatly missed by his family.
In typical Mark fashion there will be no pomp and circumstance. A private family memorial will take place at a later date.

Trevor Keith, son of Jennifer (Dahlstrom) Woodring and Keith Stahlhut was born October 11, 1995, at Covenant Hospital in Waterloo. He was baptized on October 22, 1995 and confirmed May 10, 2010, both at Faith United Church of Christ in Tripoli. Trevor graduated from Sumner-Fredericksburg High School in 2014. Following graduation, he began working at OMEGA Cabinetry in Waterloo, prior to starting his career at Star Equipment, also in Waterloo. Trevor was a kind hearted and thoughtful person. He was always bringing thoughtful gifts to his family and loved being able to make others smile. Trevor enjoyed fishing, playing video games, socializing with friends, but his greatest joy was time spent with family.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM, Wednesday, December 20th at Becker & Son Funeral Home in Tripoli and for one hour preceding services at the Church on Thursday.
Janis was born on January 16, 1956, the daughter of Wilbert and Pauline (Judisch) Frahm. She grew up attending Grace Lutheran Church where she was baptized on February 5, 1956, and confirmed on April 4, 1971. Janis had two children, Eve and Eric. She met her husband Steve on New Year's Eve in 1990. They married at The Little Brown Church on June 3, 1994. Janis enjoyed being at home making her lists, watching HGTV and completing word puzzle books. She found joy in spoiling her grandchildren and spending time with all of her family.
Janis attended Tripoli Schools, graduating in 1974. After graduation she went through nurses training at Sumner Hospital. After her training she started working at Allen Hospital in Waterloo. At the end of her career at Allen in 1999, she was working as a physical therapy technician. Upon resigning from Allen, Janis worked as an in-home day care provider until she retired in 2019. She loved each of her daycare kids just like they were her own.
Janis is survived by her husband, Steve; her children, Eve (Ryan) Pautsch of Denver, Iowa and Eric (Kelly) Phillips of Spirit Lake, Iowa; five grandchildren, Grant, Miles and Henry Pautsch of Denver, and Eli and Reese Phillips of Spirit Lake; mother, Pauline Frahm of Denver, Iowa; four siblings, Maureen Oberbroeckling of Sumner, Brenda Buenzow of Readlyn, Janell and Keith Staack of Shell Rock, and Brian and Brenda Frahm of Charles City; as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition she is survived by her mother-in-law, Ruth Hennings of Sumner; two brothers-in-law, David Hennings of Mead, Colorado and Tom (Joan) Hennings of Waterloo; and one sister-in-law, Sue (Harvey) Carey of Manzanola, Colorado. Rudolph, Jr. son of Rudolph, Sr. and Erdena (Neuendorf) Pavelec was born July 23, 1943, at the family’s home, rural Tripoli. He was baptized August 23, 1943, at the Congregational Church in Tripoli and confirmed April 14, 1957, at Faith United Church of Christ in Tripoli. Rudy received his early education at Country School Fremont #1 and graduated from Tripoli High School in 1961. While in high school, he worked for Burt Bock and in the summer worked on a road crew. On November 23, 1961, he was united in marriage with Gertrude Stumme at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church (Siegel), rural Waverly. Rudy worked at Carrol Saw Mill (Frederika), Pete Moeller Construction, and in 1972 Rudy and Gert established Pavelec Construction, which he was still operating. In addition to his construction business, he also started Rudy’s Bait Shop in Sumner in 1991. As a young man, he played fast pitch softball, enjoyed fast cars and helping his father-in-law, Ewald Stumme on his farm. Rudy was an excellent pool player (was the pool shark for the Hub in Tripoli). Throughout his life he enjoyed playing cards (Schafkopf), cribbage and yahtzee, watching old westerns, telling jokes and stories, an occasional drink and swisher sweet with his dog, Nellie, hunting with grandsons, fishing (especially with his grandchildren at the pond), taking grandchildren for rides in his truck, and in the more recent years, he enjoyed watching Walker, Texas Ranger and doing word search.
Rudy is survived by his wife, Gertrude of Tripoli; children, Bruce (Jessica Burgart) Pavelec of Tripoli, Sarah (Jeff) Robbins of Augusta, Georgia, Susan (Neil) Matthias of Central City, Sandra (Kevin) Kuhlmann of Sully, and Sonya (A. J.) Semelroth of Tripoli: twelve grandchildren, Trent Pavelec, Virginia (Hunter) Wells, Jonathon and Alexander Robbins, Brianna (Joel) Kazmerzak, Skyler and Storm Matthias, Canyon and Blaize Kuhlmann, Zoe and Oakley Semelroth, and Mason Malget; three great-grandchildren, Amelia and Jackson Wells, and Layla Kazmerzak; sisters, Elaine Olmstead of Eagle River, Alaska and Jeanette Coontz of Denver; sisters-in-law, Elinor Moeller and Luanne (Virgil) Butterfield; brother-in-law, Leroy Stumme; step-brothers-in-law, Dennis Patterson, Arlo Patterson, Jay Patterson, and Kevin Patterson; and many nieces and nephews.

Delores Clara, daughter of Otto and Viola (Biermann) Buls was born July 13, 1930. She was baptized August 10, 1930, and confirmed June 13, 1943, both at St. John’s United Church of Christ (Siegel) rural Waverly. Delores received her education in the Country School, rural Waverly. On April 27, 1947, she was united in marriage with Lawrence Heinemann at St. John’s United Church of Christ (Siegel). Delores was a lifetime faithful member of St. John’s United Church of Christ (Siegel) where she was involved in the Women’s Fellowship, was very active in the Tripoli V.F.W. Auxiliary, and was a Cub Scout Den Leader. She enjoyed gardening, bowling (was in a local league), golfing and most recently playing cards in a traveling card club.
Delores is survived by her sons, Allen (Janalee) Heinemann of Sarasota, Florida and Lynn (April) Heinemann of New Lisbon, Wisconsin; daughters-in-law, Linda (Gary) Rieck of Tripoli and Jan Heinemann of Waverly; sixteen grandchildren; thirty great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, brothers, Virgil (Doretta) Buls of Tripoli and Verlyn (Phyllis) Buls of Tripoli; sister, Darlys Scully of Parkersburg; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM, Wednesday, May 3rd at Becker & Son Funeral Home in Tripoli and for one hour preceding services at the Church on Thursday.
Hollis John, son of Edward and Clara (Judas) Niemeyer was born June 13, 1929, at the family’s home in Readlyn. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Readlyn. Hollis graduated from Tripoli High School in 1948. On July 15, 1951, he was united in marriage with Heraldean Redies at Grace Lutheran Church in Tripoli. To this union two children were born, Linda and Lynn. Hollis served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict from 1951 until being honorably discharged in 1953. After his honorable discharge he returned to the Tripoli area. He began his working career at Rath Packing in Waterloo, working there for over thirty years, prior to working in maintenance for the City of Tripoli. Hollis and his wife, Heraldean operated a daycare service out of their home for several years, prior to their retirement. He was a long time faithful member of Grace Lutheran Church, served on the Church Council, was a member of Brandenburg-Krueger Post #4013, V.F.W. of Tripoli, and served as a volunteer firefighter for the Tripoli Fire Department. In 2014, Hollis was honored to take part in the Honor Flight to our Nation’s Capital. Hollis enjoyed camping, grilling, but most of all enjoyed time with his family and friends.
Hollis is survived by his children, Linda Kaye Niemeyer of Spring Park, Minnesota and Lynn Allen (Cheryl) Niemeyer of Spring, Texas; two grandchildren, Landon (Samantha) Baird and Mason (Priscilla) Niemeyer; one great-grandchild, Rowan Baird and one great-grandchild on the way;  sister-in-law, Shirley Redies of Glendale, Arizona; and several nieces and nephews.

He was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Frederika. Bill graduated from Frederika High School in 1951. On January 2, 1953, he married Stella Timmer at Kirksville, Missouri. He entered the United States Army in February of 1953 and was honorably discharged in December of 1954. Stella died on December 23, 2008, and on May 13, 2011, he married Geraldine Boos at Trinity Lutheran Church in New Hampton. Bill was an active community member in Tripoli, serving as: Commander of the V.F.W. for four years, Scoutmaster for five years, a board member of the Bremer County Historical Society for thirty-five years, and president of Alcock Cemetery Board for thirty-five years. He worked at John Deere in Waterloo for thirty years, retiring on January 30, 1989.
Bill is survived by his wife, Geraldine of Denver; children, Jo Janola (Lloyd) Selck of Sumner, Sheryl (Steven) Bruch of New Hampton, William J. (Pauline) Bravener of Frederika, Susan (Kevin) Graeser of Nashua, and Beverly (Everett) Shinstine of Ionia; two step-children, Candis (Brian) Smith of Waterloo and Joy (Kenneth) Clark of Waterloo; fifteen grandchildren; thirty-two great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
In addition to his parents and wife, Stella, he was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Matthew Hampton; and siblings, Valetta, Valeria, Cleona, Lucille, Claire, Adelbert, and LaDonna.

Hans Heinz Schult was born October 18, 1933, in Berlin, Germany. When he was a mid-teenager, Hans moved to Sumner. Hans served in the United States Army from September of 1954 until being honorably discharged in July of 1956. During his service he was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. On November 21, 1954, he was untied in marriage with Marilyn Olejniczak at Grace Lutheran Church in Tripoli. To this union two sons were born, Randy and Kurt. The family made their home in Tripoli. Hans was a tool and die maker for over forty years, working for Shield Bantam, United Hydraulics, and completed his working career as the lead foreman for Roskamps Manufacturing. Following his retirement, Hans worked at the Tripoli School as a study hall monitor. He was a long time faithful member of Grace Lutheran Church, where he was involved in the Men of Grace, sang in the Church Choir, played in the Church’s Dartball Leage, and was a member of the Wapsi Sportsmen’s Club. Hans enjoyed trips on his motorcycle with Marilyn, playing bingo, gambling, and loved attending his grandson’s activities.
Hans is survived by his two sons, Randy Schult and Kurt (Kristie) Schult, both of Tripoli; two grandsons, Kristofer (Kalie) Schult of Winterset and Karter (Marissa) Schult of Waukee; three great-grandchildren, Keeghan, Kollins, and Kilian Schult; brother, Rudi (Pat) Schult of East Moline, Illinois; brother-in-law, Dennis Olejniczak of Decorah; sister-in-law, Francis White of Clarksville; and several nieces and nephews.

According to her wishes, her body has been cremated. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, November 14, 2022, at Faith United Church of Christ with Rev. Marilyn Sargent officiating. The family will receive friends and relatives at the Church on Monday starting at 10:00 AM and continuing with a luncheon after the service. Private inurnment will be held at Grace Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Tripoli. Glenyce asked that instead of flowers, a memorial may be given to the family for later designation to Faith United Church of Christ in Tripoli and the Vinton Lutheran Home.
Glenyce, the daughter of Paul and Norma (Hagenow) Hartman was born March 22, 1934, on the family farm at rural Fairbank. She was baptized April 15, 1934, at Zion Lutheran Church in Readlyn. At the age of ten, the family moved to rural Tripoli. They joined Grace Lutheran Church in Tripoli where she was confirmed on March 21, 1948. She attended a one-room schoolhouse through 8th grade and graduated from Tripoli High School in 1952.
In 1954, she married Roger Boeckmann. They were blessed with three children, Joel, Lori, and Tom. Glenyce worked various bookkeeping jobs while the kids were growing up, including 20 years at N.R. Ambrose Oil Company. While a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Glenyce was very active in several positions including teaching Sunday School, served on the Church Council and was the Church Treasurer.
Roger died in 1978, and she went on to get a degree in Accounting and worked in Waterloo until 1984, when she married Forrest Bolte. She then joined his church, Faith United Church of Christ in Tripoli. While there, she served on Church Council and for over 20 years she was Treasurer of Women’s Fellowship and planned many funeral luncheons.
She and Forrest did extensive traveling to 49 states (Forrie said he’d go to Hawaii when they built a bridge), all Canada Provinces, Panama and Central America. As a couple, they bowled in several leagues in Tripoli and Waterloo. She and Forrest moved to Vinton in 2006 to be closer to family. Forrest died in 2017. Glenyce enjoyed playing any kind of card games and was in several card clubs. She enjoyed reading and Sudoku puzzles.
Glenyce is survived by two children, Lori Meyer of Evansdale and Tom (Lisa) Boeckmann of Vinton, five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, Jeremy (Dana) Meyer, Alison and Ella of Evansdale, Jesse (Holly) Meyer, Stella and Cole of Clarksville, Adam (Amy) Boeckmann, Wes and Paisley of Johnston, Trevor Boeckmann of New York City, and Haley (Phillip) Close, Nora and Audrey of Vinton; two sisters, Verlaine Knoploh of Sumner and Wilma Franzen of Waverly; and a brother-in-law, Gene Perkins of Britt.

Betty Jean, daughter of Harold and Martha (Heiligmann) O’Connell was born October 21, 1937. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Frederika. Betty received her education in the Frederika Schools, graduating from Frederika High School in 1955. While in High School, she was a member of the basketball team. On June 1, 1957, she was united in marriage with Melvin Schwartz in Cedar Falls. The couple lived in Waterloo for a couple years, and while there Betty was a secretary at Waterloo Industries, before the couple moved to a farm southeast of Tripoli and farmed there for over forty years. The couple raised dairy cattle, beef cattle, hogs, and also farmed grain. Betty was a long time faithful member of Faith United Church of Christ in Tripoli and Farm Bureau. She enjoyed playing cards, word search puzzles, but her greatest joy came from time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Betty is survived by her children, Becky (John) Holtz of Scottsdale, Arizona, Kevin (Pam) Schwartz of Two Rivers, Wisconsin, Dan (Amy) Schwartz of Hillsboro, Texas, and Jody (Gaylen) Carpenter of Waverly; eight grandchildren, Haley, Hunter, Hannah, and Halaina Holtz, Jessie (Eric) Reindl, Jordan (Cameron) Coleman, and Lexus and Cade Carpenter; two great-grandchildren, Kai and Haven Reindl; brother, Alvin (Mary) O’Connell of Overland Park, Kansas; sister, Judy (James) Schwartz of Annapolis, Maryland; and several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews.

David Ray, son of John and Creszenz (Bender) Price was born April 16, 1940, at St. Francis Hospital in Waterloo. He was baptized in the Lutheran Faith and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Readlyn. Dave received his early education in the Country Schools, rural Tripoli prior to Tripoli High School. He served in the United States Army Reserves from 1961 to 1967. In 1962, Dave attended a U.S.O Dance in Philadelphia and while there, met Diane Gallagher. The couple were married during a blizzard on January 20, 1963, at Zion Lutheran Church in Readlyn. The couple resided in Readlyn for a brief time, prior to moving to their home in 1970, southeast of Tripoli. Dave worked at Schultz Manufacturing in Waterloo, prior to working as a welder at Schield-Bantam (now known as Terex) in Waverly for thirty seven years, retiring as a welding inspector in 2003. He was a long time member of Grace Lutheran Church in Tripoli. Dave enjoyed the outdoors, whether it be fishing, hunting, cutting wood or mowing his yard, wood-work for a brief time, loved making projects, and in retirement due to his love of people, made several trips to the Amish Community to socialize with his friends.
Dave is survived by his wife, Diane of Tripoli; four children, Evaline “Ev” (Gary) Boevers of Tripoli, Michele (Mike) Kindschi of Evansdale, Ginger (Dale) Borneman of Mesa, Arizona, and Joseph “Joe” (Claire) Price of Cedar Falls; seven grandchildren, Rachele and Jessica Kindschi, and Jaedyn, Tate, Mae, Levi, and Shepherd Price; and siblings, Alvin Price of Fairbank and Agnes Parkinson of Oelwein.

Virgil Arnold, son of Arnold and Helen (Wolf) Ducker was born May 9, 1927, at the family’s home in Tripoli. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Evangelical and Reformed Church (now known as Faith United Church of Christ) in Tripoli. Virgil received his education in the Tripoli Schools, graduating from Tripoli High School in 1944. Following graduation, he attended Iowa State College (now known as Iowa State University) for a year, prior to serving in the United States Army from April 23, 1946, before being honorably discharged on May 2, 1947. While serving, Virgil was stationed in Korea. On August 29, 1948, he was united in marriage with Jane Niemann at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner. To this union eight children were born, Craig, Denis, Lynn, Ellen, Ann, Daniel, Mary, and Matthew. Virgil’s career with the United States Post Office began sorting mail on the trains, before working as a clerk in Tripoli. In 1972, the family moved to Wilton, where Virgil served as Postmaster for eight years, before becoming the Postmaster at Tipton, where he served until retiring on April 1, 1986. Virgil was a skilled handyman, whether it be a mechanic, electrician, plumber, or T.V. repair. He was involved in many community organizations in the several communities he lived, Tripoli V.F.W., Wapsi Sportsmen’s Club, Tipton Lions and Rotary, Tripoli Volunteer Fire Department; and was a member of the Waverly Masonic Lodge. Virgil was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Wilton, United Church of Christ in Tipton, and Faith United Church of Christ in Tripoli. Jane and Virgil loved traveling together, traveling all over the United States and as a 50th wedding anniversary gift from their children were able to travel to Europe for a few weeks. In addition to his love for travel, Virgil enjoyed golfing, playing cards, the Iowa Hawkeyes and St. Louis Cardinals, and was able to ride Ragbrai three times. Jane died on May 5, 2011. After living in Tipton for thirty two years, Virgil returned to Tripoli until moving to Cobblestone Court Assisted Living in the past year.
Virgil is survived by his children, Craig (Hazel) Ducker of North Washington, Ellen (Dan) Kalkbrenner of Tripoli, Ann Ducker of Cedar Rapids, Daniel (Carolyn) Ducker of Nashville, Tennessee, Mary Brown of Iowa City, and Matthew Ducker of Henderson, Nevada; daughter-in-law, Robin Ducker of Chicago; twenty grandchildren; thirty six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Martha M., daughter of Harry and Bessie (Gaskill) Doeringsfield was born February 6, 1932, in Alden, Iowa. She was baptized in the Methodist Faith and confirmed at the United Methodist Church in Hampton. Martha graduated from Hampton High School in 1950, and received her Teaching Certificate in 1952, from Iowa State Teachers College (now known as the University of Northern Iowa) in Cedar Falls. Martha was united in marriage with Lawrence Smalley on November 27, 1953, at the United Methodist Church in Hampton. She began her teaching career at Normal School in Cedar Falls, prior to teaching Elementary Education at Osage, and Special Education at Hampton Schools. Martha received her Bachelor’s of Science in 1973 from NE Missouri State University. She taught 2nd grade at Fredericksburg Schools from 1969 until her retirement in 1997. Martha was a long time member of Faith United Church of Christ in Tripoli, where she was involved in Women’s Fellowship, the Quilting Group, and taught Sunday School and Confirmation. She was a member of the Sweet Adaline Choir and the River City Barbershop Chorus Auxiliary in Mason City. Martha enjoyed dolls, animals, and loved being around people.
Martha is survived by her three sons, Tom (Brenda) of LeMars, Tim (Janell) of Tripoli, and Ted Smalley of LaPorte City; grandchildren, Sean Smalley of Madison, Wisconsin, Brooke (Kyle Cruikshank) Smalley of Plymouth Minnesota, Emily Sauerbrei of Badger, Levi Smalley of LaPorte City, and Kaleb Roach of Cedar Falls; and five nieces.

Carol graduated from Iowa Falls High School in 1954, and continued her education at Allen School of Nursing, where she earned her Nursing Degree. She was an instructor at Allen School of Nursing in Waterloo for a year. On August 16, 1959, she was united in marriage with Lavern C. Hunemuller at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Ackley. To this union two children were born, Linda and David. The family made their home in Tripoli. Carol assisted her husband, Lavern at their family’s business C & L Radio TV. Carol was a long time faithful member of Grace Lutheran Church in Tripoli, serving as secretary of the Parish Board of Education, president of the Women’s Group, teaching Sunday School, the Church Choir, and Bell Choir. In addition to her volunteer work at the Church, she also was involved in the Lutheran Brotherhood for many years, the Tripoli Women’s Club and the Tripoli Music Mother’s Group. Carol loved serving her community and being around people. In addition, she enjoyed traveling, was an excellent cook, and loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Julie was united in marriage with Rick Bradley on August 17, 2002, at the Little Brown Church, near Nashua. She worked at Tripoli Nursing & Rehab for seventeen years. Julie enjoyed reading, gardening, garage sales, antiquing and spending time with family. She and her husband, Rick ran the Tripoli Car Show for several years and attended many other Car Shows over the years, showing their TransAm “Bandit”.

Linda was born on June 28, 1948, to Paul and Margaret Block. She graduated from Tripoli Community Schools in 1966. She was joined in marriage to Darol Stahlhut in 1967. They were blessed with 2 daughters, Christina Lynn and Tracie Jean. They later divorced.
She married Dwight Hughes in 1976. Together they owned and operated County Supply Company in Tripoli. They later divorced.
Linda later was employed by Bremwood in Waverly, followed by Adults Incorporated in Waterloo. She retired from the Larrabee Vocational Center and Trinkets & Togs after 20 years as Vocational Program Director. She received the Legacy Award from the Non-Profit Leadership Alliance for her dedication.
Linda loved her dogs and loved to laugh, particularly while re-writing song lyrics and working out the choreography for the Silhouette performances. She enjoyed traveling; and trips with her sisters were especially loved.
She is survived by her daughters Christina (Matthew) Jurgensen and Tracie (James) Stewart, her granddaughter Kaitlyn Jurgensen (Justin Kipp), her step grandchildren, Cory Berry (Michelle Bacon) & Khloe Gray, her siblings Ruth Smith, Virgil (Karen) Block, Lois Pitz, LuAnn (Dennis) Weitzenkamp, Steven (Jennifer) Block, Rebecca (Mark) Smith and many nieces & nephews. Penny Lynn, daughter of Clarence Noah Coan and Elizabeth Mytle Cullison Bovee was born September 6, 1956, at Copley Memorial Hospital in Aurora, Illinois. She received her education in the Aurora Schools and attended Irving Crown High School in Aurora. Penny married Dean Paul Norton and to this union two children were born, Kelly and Kyle. The family moved to Tripoli in the late 1980’s. The couple would later divorce. Penny was a mental health nurse at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo for many years, until her health no longer permitted. She was united in marriage with Mike Holm at Grace Lutheran Church in Tripoli in 2006. Penny enjoyed crocheting, knitting, cooking, and baking, but her greatest joy was time spent with her family.
Penny is survived by her husband, Mike of Tripoli; daughter, Kelly (Ray) Wood of Sumner; son, Kyle (Megan) Norton of Waterloo; grandchildren, Ethan Wood, Paige and Natalie Harberts, Sam and Blakely; step-son, Brandon Holm of Aplington; siblings, Michele Bovee, Diane Fischer, Allen (Dee) Coan, and Mike (Debbie) Patterson; and many nieces and nephews.

He worked at Rockwell Automation in Sumner for many years, and since 2010, has been a Product Development Specialist at John Deere & Co. in Waterloo. On July 9, 2005, Jason was united in marriage with Alice Bates in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was a member of UAW 838, and was an avid New England Patriots Fan. Jason loved being a Dad to Alex, Sydney and Megan, and thoroughly enjoyed vacationing with them and attending their various activities.

Amy graduated from Tripoli High School in 1986 and would continue her education at La’ James College in Cedar Falls. On August 22, 1992, she was united in marriage with Kelby Bergmann. To this union three children were born, Faith, Paige, and Dawson. Amy worked at Rockwell Automation in Sumner for many years, prior to her employment as a Paraeducator at Wapsie Valley School District since 2009. Amy was a long time member of St. John Lutheran Church in Frederika, where she was involved with the Youth Group, planning the annual 4th of July fundraiser, and was a member of the Tripoli Athletic Boosters, where she was very involved with the concession stands. She enjoyed gardening, kayaking, soaking up the sun, furniture restoration and recreating items she found at various sales and giving those creations to family and friends. Amy was very caring to many and devoted the time she had to helping many people in the Tripoli Community. She volunteered every Wednesday at the V.F.W. in Tripoli as a bartender and would help on the many fundraisers the V.F.W. held. Amy found great joy in many things, but the greatest joy came from the time she spent with family, especially attending all of her children’s various activities.

Ruth Berlin, daughter of John C and Leona (Schmidt) Berlin was born December 23, 1924 in Tripoli, Iowa. She was baptized January 5, 1925 by Rev. Koehler and confirmed April 12, 1938 by Rev. Thomas at St Peters Evangelical Church, Tripoli, Iowa. She graduated from Tripoli High School in 1942, moved to Minneapolis/St Paul to work in an airplane factory until the end of World War II. On October 23, 1945 she was united in marriage to Loren Bergmann at Faith United Church of Christ in Tripoli. She worked on their farm north of Tripoli and raised a family until at the age of 37. In 1961 she attended Pitzi’s and opened her Beauty Salon in their home until 2012 when she retired at the age of 87.
Ruth was a member of Grace Lutheran Church Tripoli. She loved golfing, bowling, baking with or for the grand and great grandchildren, playing cards with her friends and family and even an occasional gambling outing with her daughter, granddaughter and a friend and her daughter. She is survived by one daughter, Lois Paulsen and her special friend Randy Williams of Grundy Center, one son, Lloyd (Cheryl) Bergmann of Shell Rock: four grandchildren, Douglas Zars, Meghan Paulsen, Matthew and Nicholas Bergmann; nine great grandchildren; one great-great grandson; two sisters, Naomi Jensen of Sun City AZ, and Mary Moeller of Tripoli, IA and sister-in-law Janola Rueckert of Columbus Junction.

Bob received his early education in a Country School, rural Tripoli prior to attending Tripoli High School. On January 21, 1962, he was united in marriage with Ann Marie Lahmann at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Bob worked for John Deere & Co. in Waterloo from September of 1974 until retiring in May of 2003. He enjoyed boating, fishing, morel mushroom hunting, Western Movies, and riding his motorcycle. Bob also had a love for horses and was a wonderful story teller.
