Obituary Preview: Barbara Mercedes (Jarchow) Toussaint, 90, of Sumner passed away peacefully on April 14, 2024, in Sumner, Iowa.
A private family service will be held. Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM, Wednesday, April 17th at Becker & Son Funeral Home in Sumner.
Barbara was born to Leonard and Lucile (Rathbone) Jarchow on December 17, 1933, in Sumner, IA. She grew up in Sumner and graduated from Sumner High School in 1951. After high school she was employed by the First National Bank of Sumner until her marriage.
Barbara was united in marriage with Vern Toussaint on January 27, 1953 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sumner, by Fr. Joseph Kleiner. Barbara and Vern farmed west of Sumner for many years until they retired from farming in 1981. Barbara was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sumner. She enjoyed gardening, reading, sewing, traveling, dining out and spending time with her children and grandchildren. Barbara is survived by seven children and their spouses: Rodney (Kristy) of Sumner; Debra (Gary) Griffith of Richmond, VA; Daniel of Iowa City; Cheryl (Gary) Sheldon of Dubuque; Michael (Julie) of Sumner; Cathy (Rick) Coleman of North Liberty; and Joe (Elly) of Sumner; nine grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; sister Lila (Tom) Buchta of Libertyville, IL; and brother, Jimmy Jarchow of Waverly, IA;
She was preceded in death by her husband Vern; her parents; mother and father- in-law; three sisters, Julia Stevely of Cedar Rapids, IA, Phyllis Pattison of Sumner, IA and Sharon Ries of Sumner, IA; one brother Fred; and two brothers-in-law, Kim Stevely and Eugene Pattison. Also, in-laws Chuck and Marcella Wheeler of Waterloo, Veryl and Roger Schares of New Hampton, and Ramona and Don Menuey of Fairbank.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM, Monday, April 15, 2024, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sumner with Rev. Ralph Davis celebrating. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery, rural Sumner. Visitation will be held from 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM, Sunday, April 14th at Becker & Son Funeral Home in Sumner and for one hour preceding Mass at the Church on Monday. Memorials may be made to the family for later designation. Sharon was born to Leonard and Lucile (Rathbone) Jarchow on May 20, 1940, in Sumner, IA. She grew up in Sumner and graduated from Sumner High School in 1959. After high school she was employed by Kroblin Trucking until 1970. She married Robert (Bob) Ries on November 26,1960. She was employed at the Hillcrest Nursing Home in Sumner from 1982 until her
retirement in 2002.
Sharon was an active member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sumner and a member of the Sumner bowling league.
Sharon is survived by her husband Robert Ries; son, Randal of New York, NY; daughter, Emily (Tony) Snyder of Readlyn, IA; grandson, Cole Snyder of Readlyn; granddaughter, Mackenzie Snyder of Readlyn; sisters, Barbie Toussaint of Sumner, IA, and Lila (Tom) Buchta of Libertyville, IL; brother, Jimmy Jarchow of Waverly, IA; and brother-in-law, LaVerne Ries of Fayette.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her mother and father-in-law, Amelia and John Ries; two sisters, Julie Stevely of Cedar Rapids, IA and Phyllis Pattison of Sumner, IA; four brothers-in-law, Vern Toussaint, Kim Stevely, Eugene Pattison, and Jack Ries; and three sisters-in-law, Joyce Ries, JoAnn Ries, and Del Rose “Dobie” Ries.

George B. Woodard, Jr. - July 10, 1927 - April 06, 2024

Obituary Preview: George Barrell Woodard was born July 10, 1927, in West Union, Iowa to Viola and George Woodard Sr. George grew up in West Union and dearly loved his hometown. He graduated from West Union High School in 1945 yet was known to drop in on class reunions for other years simply to chat with friends. He loved parties and never met a stranger, only friends he had not yet gotten acquainted with.
He was drafted into the air corps (which later became known as the Air Force) in September of 1945, near the end of World War II. Because his eyesight was less than that required for being a pilot and the fact that he knew how to type, George was assigned an office position. He joked that he “flew a typewriter”! He was discharged in 1946.
George attended the University of Iowa on the GI Bill for four years and graduated in February of 1951. He joined his father working in the insurance and real estate business. George married a nurse, Iris Deloris Willsey, on October 12, 1951.
Over the course of his life, he consistently contributed to his community and took a genuine interest in the welfare of other people. Examples of this include serving as: President of the Lions Club and a being recognized as a 50-year member, He was an active member of the Lion’s Club for 72 years! He served as President of the Country Club, Budget and Admissions Chairman of the Fayette County United Fund for the life of that organization, Chairman of the Fayette County Republican Central Committee, member of the Chamber of Commerce back when it was called the Citizens Club, received the West Union Chamber of Commerce “Man of the Year” Award in 1956, President of the Northeast Iowa Board of Realtors, received the Distinguished Service Award from the Junior Chamber of Commerce in 1962, and the second place Distinguished Service Award for the State of Iowa in 1962, served on various community boards and committees such as acting as the Co-chair of the Advanced Gifts Division of the Palmer Memorial Hospital Expansion Drive, the Upper Iowa University Board of Directors for 17 plus years, past President of the West Union Industrial Development Committee and a charter member of the West Union Ambassadors, on the board of the West Union Senior Citizen Housing Corporation since 1971, member of the American Legion. He has served on the Bank 1st Board of Directors, the Masonic Lodge, the Shriners and the Scottish Rite Consistory of Cedar Rapids. He has worked on numerous fund drives including drives for the West Union Airport, West Union Swimming Pool, Good Samaritan Nursing Center, Heiserman Memorial Library, and the West Union Recreational Foundation.
George Barrell Woodard, loving Husband, Father, Grandpa, Uncle, and friend passed away April 6, 2024. George was preceded in death by his wife Iris Deloris Willsey Woodard, parents Viola and George Woodard Sr., his younger sister Mary Woodard Howes and her husband Ed Howes, his sister-in-law Marcy Alcorn and her husband Vern Alcorn. George is survived by his three children: Nancy and her husband Bill Marker of Clinton, NJ, Dick and his wife Jennifer of West Union, and Jane and her husband Jonathan Aves of Winston-Salem, NC. George took great joy in spending time with his four grandchildren, Stephanie Marker of Boston, Massachusetts, Alex Marker of New York City, NY, Brittany Aves of Madrid, Spain, and Marissa Aves of Cambridge, Massachusetts. He is very fond of his nephews Brian Howes of New York City, NY, and Steve Howes of Greenville, SC, and their families. George was also close to Iris’ sister’s sons, Kim Colberg of Marion, IA, and Kent Colberg of East Moline, IL, and their children.
The family will hold an 11 am interment at the West Union Cemetery on July 6, 2024. A Celebration of Life Open House will be held from 2:00 - 5:00 pm in the backyard of Dick Woodard’s home, 333 South Vine St., in West Union. The sharing of fun George memories will be encouraged for any willing to do so.

Larry Toenges - August 30, 1951 - March 16, 2024

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, March 25, 2024, at Faith Evangelical Church in Sumner with Rev. Brian Boehmler officiating. Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM, Sunday, March 24th at Faith Evangelical Church and for one hour preceding services at the Church on Monday. Memorials may be made in Larry's name to Unity Point Hospice or the Sumner Daycare and Learning Center.
Larry Lawrence, son of Lawrence and Virginia (Van Brocklin) Toenges was born August 30, 1951, in Sumner. He was baptized October 7, 1951, and confirmed May 30, 1965, both at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye. Larry graduated from North Fayette in 1969 and continued his education at Upper Iowa University in Fayette, earning a degree in business. Larry worked at Hancor for a few years, prior to working at First National Bank in Sumner. In addition to his work at the bank, he raised hogs. In the 1980’s, Larry changed professions and started farming full time. On December 6, 1984, he was united in marriage with Debra Duhrkopf in Hawaii. Larry loved everything about farming and had a great appreciation for Farmall tractors (later John Deere). He had a great sense of humor, avid storyteller and was known by many for his sweet tooth. Larry also enjoyed tractor pulls, drag racing, corvettes and fast cars, car auctions (attended a Barrett-Jackson car auction), but his greatest joy came from time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Larry is survived by his wife, Debra of rural Sumner; sons, Travis (Susan) Seehase of Sumner and Tyson (Sarah) Seehase of Adel; six grandchildren, Callahan, Jaydlin, Klay, and Alivia Seehase and Calli and Miah Seehase; siblings, Judy Miller of Cedar Falls, Duane Toenges of Marion, and Kevin Toenges of Hawkeye; sisters-in-law, Vicky (Bob) Hutchcroft of Steamboat Rock, Cindy (Bill) Ganske of Sumner, Cathy Markey of Denver, and Lori (Rich) Ganske of Sumner; brother-in-law, Tim (Kelly) Duhrkopf of Sumner; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law, Betty and Jim Duhrkopf; and sister-in-law, Colleen Toenges.
The family will be wearing their seed corn, coop and implement apparel to honor Larry, they request anyone that attends the visitation or service do the same, if they feel inclined.

Kathryn Lucille was born on May 14, 1929, rural Sumner daughter of Cecil Morris and Gladys (Harris) Morris (Heidemann). She was baptized in infancy and confirmed on November 14, 1948, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sumner. Kathy graduated from Tripoli High School in 1947. On November 9, 1947, she married Leslie “Les” George Hunemuller at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sumner. They farmed in the Sumner and Tripoli areas for many years and also worked for five years at Chamberlain Manufacturing Co, in Waterloo. She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Sumner and active for many years in the Ladies Aid Society. Kathy loved baking pies and making jam, farming, dominos and dancing. She also loved camping with friends and family, especially her grandchildren. Kathy and Les were active members of a polka dancing club and Busy Bees Winnebago Club.
Kathy is survived by her son, Ronnie (Nenita) of Anchorage, Alaska; daughter, Mary (William) Schulte of North Liberty, Iowa; daughter-in-law, Kathy, of Tripoli; nine grandchildren, Lisa Pearson, Ronnie Lee Hunemuller, Leslie R. Hunemuller, Jason (Vanette) Hunemuller, Nathan (Melissa) Hunemuller, Kristi (TJ Beem) Hunemuller, Jared Hunemuller, Christopher (Natasha) Schulte, and Tanya (Mike) Clowers; eleven great-grandchildren, Alyvia Hunemuller, Cheyenne (Marcus) Rieck, Landan and Kesley Hunemuller, Ember Beem, Aria and Aidan Schulte, Conrad Clowers, and Ky, Jacob, and Alice Pearson; and, two great-great-grandchildren, Paisley and Aiden Rieck.

Wanda Lee, daughter of James Adams and Vera Corwin was born September 7, 1942, at Sartori Hospital in Cedar Falls. She was baptized April 12, 1954, at the New Hartford Methodist Church and confirmed on October 30, 1988 at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner. Wanda grew up in New Hartford, receiving her education in the New Hartford School System and graduated from New Hartford High School in 1960. On June 14, 1963, she was united in marriage with Larry Burrows in New Hartford. To this union, two sons were born Steve and Bob. After Larry accepted a teaching job at Sumner Schools in 1963, the family made Sumner their home. Wanda began her working career at U.B.C. Building Center, prior to a long career at Dr. Smith’s Office in Sumner, retiring in 2009. Wanda was a longtime active member of St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner, where she was involved in WELCA, and volunteered at the Hillcrest Home in Sumner. She enjoyed playing cards (was in several local card clubs), baking cookies, yard sales, relaxing on her front porch, feeding the birds and squirrels, sharing her adventures with Facebook friends, a love for Elvis, and was a fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, Kansas City Chiefs, and recently became a fan of the San Francisco 49ers. Wanda loved spending time with her dog, Chief. They enjoyed walking on the local trails, sharing ice cream cones, and watching the birds and squirrels from her sunroom. However, her greatest joy came from time spent with family. Especially the time spent with her grandchildren whether that was cheering them on at their sporting events, playing endless rounds of card games, or sipping coffee on the front porch.
Wanda is survived by her two sons, Steve (Rhonda Bradley) Burrows of Sumner and Bob (Catherine) Burrows of Bondurant; five grandchildren, Chelsea (Caleb Sanderman) Burrows of Cedar Falls, Jordan (Tanner Henniges) Burrows of Cedar Falls, Shawn (Kelsey) Burrows of Dallas, Texas, Bobbie Jo (Matt Drucker) Burrows of Charlotte, North Carolina and Ashley (Kole Ruud) Burrows of Des Moines; one great-grandson, Miles Burrows; sister, Cindy (Tom) Gerard of DeWitt; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Mary Beth Burrows of Texas, Donna and Paul Lindemann of Dysart, Mary and Kenny Oldenburger of Chariton, and Steve Hosper of Melbourne, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

Sharmaine Antonette, daughter of Donald E. Ritter, II and Joan Marie Gnade, was born April 28, 1960, in Evansdale. Sharmaine received her education in the Oelwein School System. She lived in Arizona for many years, prior to returning to Northeast Iowa and calling her home Sumner in the late 1980’s. It was when she returned to the Sumner area that she met Kenny Fox. Sharmaine worked as a Line Leader at Atwood in West Union for many years, prior to working as a finesser at Ashley Industrial Moldings in Oelwein. Sharmaine enjoyed flowers, cats (especially tabby cats), and loved being with her family. She was a selfless and kind person and had an unwavering Faith in her Christianity.
Sharmaine is survived by her long time partner, Kenny Fox of Sumner; children, Joey Redfield of Sumner and Laura Redfield of Sumner and her significant other, Lloyd Little of Oelwein; step-children, Matt (Mandy) Fox, Amber (Matt) Hunt, and Amy (Jeff) Platt, all of Sumner; grandchildren, Richard and Felix Koch, Alyssa Little, Ethan Little, Eli Little, Adalynn Little, Aria Spargrove, and Melody Kimber; and brother, Tim (Regina) Ritter of Arizona.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Joan Wimmer; and brother, Donald E. Ritter, III.

Terry Lee Schott, Sr. - May 28, 1959 - February 02, 2024

Obituary Preview: Terry Lee Schott, Sr., 64, of Sumner, died Friday, February 2, 2024, at Community Memorial Hospital in Sumner, following a lengthy courageous battle with cancer.
Private family services will be held.
Terry Lee, son of Charlotte Latham and Dick Schott was born May 28, 1959, in Oelwein. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye. Terry received his education in the North Fayette School System. Terry served in the United States Army for twenty-one years and served during the Desert Storm Conflict. He had a decorated career earning many service medals, including two bronze stars. Following Terry’s honorable service, he returned to northeast Iowa, and began a career in agriculture. He began working as a livestock farmer, prior to working at B.P.I, and completed his career at Agri-Star, until his health no longer permitted. Terry was a voracious reader (his favorites were anything by Louis Lamour) and was a strong conservative who enjoyed talking politics.
Terry is survived by his children, David (Ana) Campanelli of Mission Texas, Jess Polster of New Hampton, Jenn Ruhl of Spring Lake, North Carolina, Mandy (Matt) Miller of Tripoli, and Terry Schott, Jr. of Ridgeway; seven grandchildren, Logan, Keira, Aaliyah, and Kanaan Campanelli, LeeAnne Moore, Dallas Evans, and Henry Miller; brothers, Teddy (Judy) Schott of Fredericksburg, Robert Schott of New Hampton, and Gary Schott of Fayette; sister, Deanna (Mike Trenkamp) Jarchow of Sumner; aunts, Joan McCallum and Susanne Moser, both of Hawkeye; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM, Friday, February 2nd at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner and for one hour preceding services at the Church on Saturday. Memorials may be made in Mary Lou’s name to St. John Lutheran Church or SEMS, both in Sumner.
Mary Lou, daughter of Louie and Nellie (Biermann) Wedemeier, was born March 22, 1941, at the family’s home, rural Tripoli. She was baptized on April 20, 1941, at St. Peter’s Evangelical and Reformed (now Faith United Church of Christ) in Tripoli and confirmed on April 3, 1955, at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner. Mary Lou received her education in the Sumner Schools and graduated from Sumner High School in 1958. On August 17, 1958, she was united in marriage with Orville Blaschke at St. John Lutheran Church. To this union three daughters were born, Bonnie, Becky, and Barb. Mary Lou worked for the Sumner School System as a bus driver for several years, prior to working at Upper Iowa University in Fayette for over fifteen years, retiring in 2002. Following her retirement from Upper Iowa, Mary Lou worked at Meadowbrook Country Club in Sumner as the head cook. Mary Lou was a longtime active member of St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner. She enjoyed playing games, quilting, baking, her outings with her special friends, playing cards and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. Mary Lou had many things that brought her joy, but her greatest joy was the time she spent with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and thoroughly enjoyed attending their various activities.
Mary Lou is survived by her three daughters, Bonnie (Del) Bergmann, Becky (Doug) Johnson, both of Sumner, and Barb (Craig) Lensing of Waukon; five grandchildren (who referred to Mary Lou as “granny”), Kayla (Ryan) Tucker of Denver, Alyssa (Blaine) Henderson of Grimes, Ryan (Jennifer) Bergmann of Creston, and Meredith (Ryan Rask) and Jaedyn (Harley O’Hare) Lensing, both of Waukon; five great-grandchildren, Colby and Griffin Tucker, Jaxlyn and Alexia Bergmann, and Hayden Henderson; brothers, Willard Wedemeier of Cedar Falls and Roger (Elaine) Wedemeier of Sumner; and many nieces and nephews.

Meta Joann, daughter of James and Marilyn (Blood) Douglas was born May 27, 1962, in Cedar Rapids. She received her education in the Cedar Rapids Schools System and graduated from Cedar Rapids Prairie High School in 1980. On September 17, 1994, she was united in marriage with Tim Allen at the United Methodist Church in Sumner. The couple welcomed two daughters, Meta and Carol. Meta worked at Pronto in Sumner for many years, before taking a job at the University of Northern Iowa, a job that she thoroughly enjoyed. She was a fan of the UNI Panthers, Iowa Hawkeyes, and Kansas City Chiefs, and enjoyed traveling, day trips in the fall to Prairie du Chien to appreciate the turning of the leaves, going to garage sales, but her greatest joy was her time with family, especially her grandchildren.
Meta is survived by her husband, Tim of rural Sumner; daughters, Meta (Justin) Frost of Frederika and Carol (Adam) Krieger of rural Sumner; six grandsons, Tatum, Jaxon, and Hunter Frost, and Jay, Tyler, and Trevor Krieger; sister, Kathy (Gary) Bilyeu of Mississippi; brother, Jimmy (Becky) Metcalf of Swan; brothers-in-law, Terry (Dawn) Allen of Minnesota and Tracy (Brandi) Allen of Texas; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her mother-in-law, Carol; and brother-in-law, Tony Allen.

Larry August, son of Ernest and Myrtle (Jennings-Harms) Pries was born April 29, 1946, at Mercy Hospital in Oelwein. He was baptized June 2, 1946, and confirmed April 10, 1960, both at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner. Larry received his education in the Sumner School System. Larry worked alongside his dad on the family’s farm and in addition worked at Meighan’s Tiling, until his health no longer permitted. Larry was a lifetime member of St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner. He enjoyed fishing, collecting guns, his cars, but most especially spending time with his family (especially enjoyed going on family vacations).
Larry is survived by his brother, Lee (Mary) Pries of Sumner; nieces and nephews, Janet Hyman of Washburn, Jennifer (Brad) Gordon of Fairbank, Daryl (Jenni) Gott of Maynard, Cindy (Curtis) Hansel of Waverly, Mike (Annie) Gott of Sumner, Tim (Camille) Gott of Ryan and Andrew Pries of Des Moines; and several cousins and extended family.

A Rosary will be recited at 3:45 PM, Friday at the Church.
Rita Theresa, daughter of Fred and Eva (Etringer) Meier was born April 23, 1930, in rural Jesup, Iowa. She received her Catholic sacraments at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Gilbertville. Rita received her education in the Catholic School in Gilbertville. On February 1, 1950, she was united in marriage with Thomas J. Smith at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Gilbertville. From this union twelve children were born, Thomas, Jr., Larry, Rick, Kevin, Kathy, John, Maureen, Norbert, Marcella, Joe, Rose, and Randy. Rita began her working career at Morgan Turkey Farm, prior to working at the Sumner Community Schools, and later provided home cleaning services for many Sumner residents She provided laundry and cleaning services for the Sumner Community Memorial Hospital from 1994 to 2003. Rita was a long-time faithful member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sumner, where she was very involved in the Ladies Guild and was a member of the Red Hat Society. She enjoyed dancing, sewing, gardening, traveling, playing cards and her weekly neighborhood coffees. Rita was quite the “social butterfly”.

Melissa Anne, daughter of Marvin and Karen (Speed) Pollow, was born March 1, 1967 in Sumner. She was baptized on May 28, 1967, and confirmed April 12, 1981, both at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner. On February 10, 1984 Melissa married her high school sweetheart, Todd Kasemeier at St. John Lutheran Church. She then graduated from Sumner High School in 1985. Todd and Melissa welcomed three kids into the world; Nichole, Caleb and Miranda. Melissa kept busy with the Kasemeier Grain and Trucking business, and then later started an in home daycare where she became a big part of many kids’ lives. Melissa was a life time member of St. John Lutheran Church, where she was very active, taught Sunday School and served on Church Council and as a Deacon.
Melissa was the most kind person you will ever know. She enjoyed spending time with her kids and all her grandkids. Whether it was getting together for game nights, going on adventures, heading to the bargain bins, watching the grandkids in their school and sporting events, kayaking, camping, going to farmers markets, spending the weekend at her sisters, sewing all of our things that needed fixed, and of course her love for her essential oils and getting her daily drinks at Restored Nutrition.

Obituary Preview: Ruby Jean Yearous, 85, of rural Sumner, died Thursday, January 4, 2024, at CountryHouse Residence for Memory Care in Cedar Rapids. The family wishes to thank the staff of CountryHouse and St. Croix Hospice for their exceptional and compassionate care of Ruby.
Due to the weather forecast for this weekend, services for Ruby have been postponed. Memorial services will be held at 11:30 AM, Saturday, January 20, 2024, at St. John Lutheran Church with Rev. Tracy Hinkel officiating. A luncheon will follow the service at the Church. Visitation will precede services at the Church on Saturday beginning at 10:30 AM.
She was born east of Sumner, IA, on March 16, 1938, the third child of Bernard E. and Helen A. (Bartels) Buhr. She and her older twin brother were baptized at Hope Lutheran Church, Westgate, on April 3, 1938, by Pr. Leon Gehret, and confirmed there on April 6, 1952, by Pr. El Roy Buhr. Ruby attended elementary school at Banks Center and Banks #6 Township and graduated from the Fayette County Public Schools on May 23, 1951. She graduated from Sumner High School on May 18, 1955. She received a two year teaching degree from Wartburg College in Waverly and taught elementary school in La Porte City. She then received a four year degree from Upper Iowa University in Fayette where she met John Yearous and on July 19, 1959, the couple was united in marriage at Hope Lutheran Church. Ruby continued her teaching career in Hawkeye. In the early 1960’s the couple moved to Rialto, California. Where she taught at Colton. While in California, the couple was blessed with two daughters, Margo and Jonna. Upon their return to Iowa in 1967, the family was complete with the arrival of their son, Jerit. Ruby and John began farming in rural Sumner in 1975. Ruby was very hard working, whether it be milking the cows, tending to other tasks at the farm, or being a mother. Although she and John remained very busy, they found time to go dancing. They attended many dances but might be considered “groupies” of the Dave Dighton Band, even attending a Dave Dighton Band Cruise. Ruby was a longtime faithful member of St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner, where she was very active in many of the Women’s Groups including Bible Studies, Quilting Group and serving at Funerals. Her love language was serving others. Whether opening their home as a safe loving place to people who were going through struggles in life; or simply sharing their table with visitors enjoying good food and conversation. Ruby enjoyed sewing, quilting, gardening, reading, oil painting, collecting recipes and baking.
Ruby is survived by her daughters, Margo (Al) Suckow of Van Meter and Jonna Yearous of Center Point; daughter-in-law, Jenn (Chad) Richey of Pleasant Hill; seven grandchildren, Madi (Luke) Moffitt of Midland, Texas, Parker (Lizzy Lyon) Suckow of West Des Moines, Burke Suckow of Dallas Center, Estee and Ellie Winter of Center Point, Taylor (Chris) Habermann of West Des Moines and Callie Yearous of West Des Moines; three great-grandchildren, Cody, Wyatt, and Beau Moffitt; and twin brother, Rev. After living in Michigan for eight years, they moved to Sumner. Daisy received her early education in Germany, later elementary and junior high in Michigan, prior to graduated from Sumner High School in 1969. On June 14, 1969, she was united in marriage with Kenneth W. Jones, Sr. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sumner. Daisy worked at Casey’s prior to working at Beatrice Cheese in Fredericksburg for many years. After retiring from Beatrice Cheese, she worked in the kitchen at Durant Elementary in Sumner. Daisy enjoyed playing cards, watching sports (cheering for the Iowa Hawkeyes) socializing with friends, but most of all enjoyed time spent with her family.

Marion Faye, daughter of Willard and Ella (Warnke) Snyder was born September 16, 1929, at the family's home, in Randalia. Her father died when she was two years old. When her mother married Harold Cue, he became the only father she ever knew. Marion attended school in Randalia until the 11th grade, when the family moved to Festina. She graduated from Calmar High School in 1947, and after graduation she worked for J.F. Anderson Lumber Company. On September 26, 1951, she was united in marriage with Irvin Heying at Our Lady of Seven Dolars in Festina. To this union five sons were born, Gene, Gerry, George, Jeff, and Jay. After raising her family, she went to work at Sumner Building Supply and later at the Antique Service Center in Sumner. She retired at the age of 79.
Marion is survived by her sons, Gene (Susan) of Sumner, Gerry of Waterloo, and George (Junever) of Sumner; daughters-in-law, Lori Heying of Cedar Rapids and Lisa Heying of North Liberty; eleven grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren; brother, Dean (Malinda) Cue of Oelwein; and eight brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Daniel Dean, son of Donald and Donna (Henn) Pagel was born April 22, 1961, in Waterloo. He was baptized and confirmed at Union United Methodist Church, rural Sumner. Danny received his education in the Sumner School System and graduated from Sumner High School in 1979. He would continue his education at Ellsworth Community College and later graduated from Upper Iowa University in Fayette. Danny began his working career at AMPI and after several years there, he began working at Bay Valley Foods. In addition, he would do anything and everything needed around the family farm. Danny also took care of all of the mowing for the family. He was a member of the Union United Methodist Church and the North American Hunting Club. Danny enjoyed hunting (deer and pheasant) and was a fan of the Dallas Cowboys and Iowa Hawkeyes. He was a very selfless person who would be willing to do anything he could to help a friend or family member in need. Danny was always pleasant and had a smile for everyone he met. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him.

A Celebration of Aleyce Leslie Wood's Life will be held on Saturday, December 9, 2023, at 1868 Y Ave. Sumner, Iowa from 5 to 8 PM with food provided.
Aleyce Leslie, daughter of Larry and Kris (Bohle) Wood was born October 3, 1991, at Community Memorial Hospital in Sumner. She received her education in the Sumner school district, graduating in 2010. Following graduation, Aleyce continued her education at Central College in Pella, prior to attending D.M.A.C.C. for Emergency Medical Training, and would later attend college in Boulder, Colorado for Acupuncture. She lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico for a brief period, prior to calling Denver, Colorado her home for more than a decade. She worked in the restaurant industry for many years as a bartender and server. Aleyce loved living in Denver, where she could hike and mountain climb. She was also a social butterfly, and her company was enjoyed by many. Aleyce was an extremely thoughtful and caring person, whether she was caring her many animals (her guinea pig, Bart, chinchilla, Elly, cat, Irwin, and beloved dogs Sammy and Beatrix) or being a voice for the many causes she held dear. She was a talented artist with a creative mind that was seen and felt through all that she did.
Aleyce is survived by her parents, Kris and Larry Wood of Sumner; siblings, Sara Wood of Sumner, Ben (Shila) Wood of Altoona, and Emily (Paul) Smith of Sumner; three nephews, Leo and Eli Wood, and Walter Smith; two nieces, Sydney Wood and Lenore Smith; grandmother, Maxine Draker of Sumner; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family and beloved friends.

Maureen Theresa, daughter of Thomas, Sr. and Rita (Meier) Smith was born July 16, 1958, in Sumner. She was baptized and confirmed at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sumner. Maureen received her education in the Sumner School System and graduated from Sumner High School in 1976. On January 30, 1982, she was united in marriage with William Goss at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. To this union three children were born, Michelle, Christopher and Robert. She began her professional career in 1976, at Sara Lee in New Hampton, working there until 2000, when the plant closed. Maureen returned to school at Northeast Iowa Community College in Calmar, earning her Associates Degree in Accounting. After completing her education, she worked at B.P.I, in Evansdale, first in the H.R. Department prior to becoming the Safety Director. Maureen was devout in her Faith and was a very faithful member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sumner. She enjoyed sewing, reading, cooking, puzzles (jigsaw and crossword), and Sudoku.

Obituary Preview: Willard Kenneth Orvella of Decorah, Iowa, died Saturday, October 14, 2023, at Hillcrest Home in Sumner, Iowa. He was 98.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 21, 2023, at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church, rural Decorah, with the Rev. Dr. Jennifer Edinger officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. at the Church on Saturday. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, memorials be given to Washington Prairie Lutheran church or Washington Prairie Cemetery fund.
Willard, son of Helmer and Cora Stoen Orvella, was born May 17, 1925, on his parents’ farm one mile south of Washington Prairie Church. He was baptized into the Christian faith at his home by the Reverend Paul Koren and was later confirmed in his faith at Washington Prairie.
He attended country school through the eighth grade and graduated from Decorah Senior High School in 1944. He was an active 4-H member, and he enjoyed spending his summers playing on the Nordness baseball team.
On February 8, 1953, Willard married Eloise Blegen. Together they had four children: Mary, Kathy, Jim, and Larry. They enjoyed traveling to visit family and friends. Willard also enjoyed playing cards and trout fishing. Willard was very involved in agriculture throughout his life. He began farming with his father on the farm east of Decorah on Highway 9. He eventually took over the farming operation and spent his working life there growing crops, milking cows, and raising hogs. In both 1950 and 1953 he won the Master Corn Growers award for Winneshiek County for having the best corn yield. He was a life-long member of Farm Bureau and served as its local treasurer for 26 years
Willard’s faith and his participation in church activities were very important parts of his life. As a young man he took an active part in the physical construction of the parish hall at the church in the late 40’s. He took part in quarrying the stones used in the building, transporting them to the building site, and mixing the mortar used in construction. He also held various offices and positions at church, among them: deacon, trustee, member of the Board of Education, and janitor. When it was necessary to replace the church roof in 1997, Willard and Eloise, together with Orville and Dorothy Halverson, made and sold 5,600 lefse to help raise the money.
Willard is survived by two daughters: Mary (John) Sersland of Sun City West, Arizona, and Kathy (Rick) Gloede of Sumner, Iowa; two sons: Jim Orvella and Larry (Jane) Orvella, both of Decorah; seven grandchildren: Peter Sersland, Eva (Cody) Hagan, Zachary (Melissa) Sersland, Heather Gloede, Anthony (Britney) Gloede, Andy (Laura Kos) Orvella, Rebecca (Matthew) Moore; ten great-grandchildren; two sisters: Lillian Bruvold and Arlys (Wayne) Soeder; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Eloise; his parents, Helmer and Cora Orvella; and one granddaughter, Maria Ann Orvella.

Gary Randolph, son of Randolph William Henry and Lucille Sena (Spragg) Goodenbour was born August 17, 1940, in Waterloo. He received his education in the Waterloo School System and graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1959. Gary began his professional career at John Deere in Waterloo in 1959, retiring in 1993. On May 2, 1964, he was united in marriage with Marlys Reuter at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Raymond. To this union four children were born, Allen, Dawn, Kristine, and Kara. The family lived in Tripoli for several years before moving to Waterloo, then to Sumner in 1980. Gary was a devoted member of the N.R.A. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, wood-working (always had special pieces for his family) and was a skilled carpenter.
Gary is survived by his children, Allen (Nancy) Goodenbour of Sumner, Dawn (Andy) Jurgensen of Sumner, Kristine Martin of Lake Delhi, and Kara (Doug) Weber of Raymond; fourteen grandchildren, Brian, Melissa, and Jessica Goodenbour, Sena and Shawn Westendorf, Dan Wehling, Sarah Bakken, Nicole Thompson, James Mohlis, Elizabeth, Casey, and Courtney Nation, and Ryleigh and Clint Weber; thirteen great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Ray Reuter of Jesup; one niece; and five nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marlys on September 24, 2022; brother-in-law, Kenny Reuter; and nephew, Dean Reuter.

Sharon Louise, daughter of Edward J. and Dorothy (Webster) Henniges was born November 7, 1943, in Sumner. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner. She attended #5 Country School until the 2nd grade and completed her education at Sumner Community Schools. During this time she was a member of the Rainbow Girls of the Masonic Lodge, and worked at the local Wheel In as a car hop and then later at the Sumner Café. On October 8, 1961, she was united in marriage to Kenneth H. Kasemeier at St. Paul Lutheran Church. To this union two children were born, Pamela and Kevin. Sharon worked part time as bookkeeper for Harold Mohlis-Mohlis Construction, Marvin Meyer-Meyer Hardware, James McAloon-McAloon’s Super Value. She retired after 21 ½ years as head teller at Northeast Security Bank. She was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She also served at St. Paul’s teaching Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, Confirmation and Sunday School Superintendent. Sharon enjoyed dancing, family vacations and card playing (500 and Schafkopf) but found her greatest joy outside tending to her flower gardens and cooking for the family. She will be remembered for always cooking too much food and sending home leftovers with the family. Her recent pastime was beautiful needlework on dish towels too pretty to use.
Sharon is survived by her daughter Pam (Joe) Rochford and son Kevin (Tammy) Kasemeier all of Sumner. Five grandchildren, Amy (Christian) Fitch, Pensacola, Florida, Sara Schaefer, Waterloo, Tony (Karisa) Rochford, Stephenville, Texas, Danielle (Nathan) Fink, Oran, Tyler (Kayleigh) Kasemeier, Sumner. Twelve great-grandchildren, Izabel and Sydney Fitch, Noah, Lily, and twins Colton and Claire Schaefer, another set of twins, Ryan and Dylan Rochford, Raydyn and Sophie Fink, Dominic and Derek Kasemeier; two sisters, Joyce (Roger) Dedor of Jesup and Marilyn (Skip) Koenig of Sumner; sister-in-law, Janet Henniges Sumner; brother-in-law, Jim (Lorraine) Kasemeier of Denver; sister-in-law, Diane Flaucher of Marion; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made in Bob's name to St. John Lutheran Church, SEMS, The Terrace at Hillcrest Living, Gundersen Palmer Hospice, or a charity of the donor's choice.
Robert Liewer, son of Herbert and Elizabeth (Liewer) Becker was born November 10, 1951, in Cresco. He received his elementary education in Cedar Rapids, McKinley Junior High and graduated from Cedar Rapids Washington in 1969. While in high school, Bob was a talented tennis player, earning runner-up in doubles at the Iowa State Tennis Tournament. Following graduation he went to Kirkwood Community College earning his associate degree, and completed his education at the Dallas Institute of Funeral Service. Bob began his career in funeral service in 1973, joining his father, Herbert “Barney” at Murdoch Funeral Home in Marion. On June 18, 1977, he was united in marriage with Linda Gald at Westby-Coon Prairie Lutheran Church in Westby, Wisconsin. In 1980, he, his wife, and daughter, Leigh Ann moved to Sumner. Two more children would join the family, Erin Marie and Robert Jay. Bob’s move to Sumner was due to an opportunity to work for John and Jane Milnes at Milnes Funeral Home. He often said his move to Sumner and opportunity to work for John and Jane Milnes was one of his best decisions. In 1984, he purchased the funeral home and it became Becker-Milnes. He continued to serve Sumner, Fayette, Hawkeye, and Tripoli, for nearly forty years. Bob had a strong commitment to funeral service and felt very fortunate to serve and be a part of these communities and the surrounding areas. He was a longtime member of St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner, where he served on the Church Council and was a Deacon. Bob was an original board member at SEMS, and served on the Sumner Municipal Light Plant Board. He enjoyed golfing (especially with his Wednesday group, a group he played with for thirty-five years), the Iowa Hawkeyes, and loved going to his children and grandchildren’s activities. Bob lived a life committed to his faith, funeral service and more than anything else, his family.
Bob is survived by his children, their spouses and his grandchildren, Leigh Ann (Brady) Wachter of West Des Moines, and their children, Ben and Owen, Erin (Ryan) Sawyer of Waukee and their children, Winston and Rowan, and Jay (Beth) Becker of Sumner, and their children, Madilyn, Jack, Ted, and J. B.; brother, Todd (Mary) Becker of Cedar Rapids; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Mary Ann McDonald of Ontario, Wisconsin, Robin (Brian) Kenyon of Reedsburg, Wisconsin, and Kent (Brandi) Nelson of Westby, Wisconsin and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Linda who died on July 13, 2017.
The family would like to thank The Terrace at Hillcrest Living, Gundersen Palmer Hospice and all of the loving friends and community members for the wonderful care their Dad received.
