Obituary Preview: Wayne M. Holtzman, Sr., 93, of Waterloo and formerly of Fayette, passed away on Monday evening, February 12, 2024, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, March 23, 2024, at Grandview Cemetery in Fayette with military rites provided by American Legion Post #339 of Fayette.
Wayne Monroe Holtzman, son of Guy and Goldie Holtzman was born June 9, 1930, in Fayette, Iowa. He received his education in the Fayette School System. Wayne served in the United States Marines as a Corporal in the Korean War from 1952-1954. He was honorably discharged on January 10, 1960. On August 14, 1954, Wayne was united in marriage with Mary Virginia Voshell at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. After his honorable discharge, he moved to Waterloo, working at Northwestern Bell Telephone Company where he retired. Wayne enjoyed being outdoors, whether it be fishing, chopping wood, yard work or gardening.
Wayne is survived by two sons, Guy Holtzman of Palm Springs, California and Wayne, Jr. (Enida) Holtzman of Aiea, Hawaii; two daughters, Ann (Sandy) Nordahl of Waterloo and Deanna (Scott) McCahen of Grundy Center; thirteen grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Holtzman; son, Robert Holtzman; brother, Ronald Holtzman; and sisters, Maxine Hicks, Ilene Yager, and Jeanne and Joanne Holtzman.

Michael Robert, son of Robert and Mildred (Downing) Steinbronn was born February 1, 1955, at Palmer Lutheran Hospital in West Union. He was baptized and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church in Fayette. Mike graduated from Fayette High School in 1973. After graduation, Mike farmed with his father for many years. Once the family sold the farming business, Mike worked for Upper Iowa University in Fayette, as a groundsman for the campus. Mike took great pride in his work, and won a prestigious award from the Sports Turf Managers Association of Iowa in 2001 for the football field of the year. He retired from Upper Iowa University in 2021.
Mike was passionate about his cars and was an avid music enthusiast with an extensive vinyl record collection. He loved the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Las Vegas Raiders, rarely missing a game. He enjoyed spending time with his friends, whether it be downtown, bowling, playing cards, playing softball, shooting billiards, or at a bonfire.
Mike is survived by his siblings, Carolyn (Scott) Luchsinger, Sherryl (Rob) Pennebaker, both of Fayette; Robert Steinbronn, Jr. of Mount Vernon; and Doug (Michelle Perry) Steinbronn of Rosamond, California; nieces and nephews, Jonathan (Danielle) Luchsinger of West Union; Ryan (Kelsey) Pennebaker of Waverly; David (Danielle) Luchsinger of Waverly; Kristen (Tony) Reinking of Oelwein, and Hannah (Jason) Wawczak of Amana; great-nieces and great-nephews, Danica and Dalaney Luchsinger, Emily and Ethan Luchsinger, Kellen and Eden Pennebaker, Westin, Oaklynn, and Taylynn Reinking, Hayden, Hudson, Henley, and Hazy Wawczak; aunts and uncles, Wilbert Steinbronn of Fairbank; George (Janice) Steinbronn of Maynard; John (Cisco) Steinbronn of Oelwein, Pauline Snodgrass of Scottsdale, Arizona; Irene Reinking of Nora Springs; Carole Steinbronn of Westgate, and many cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, January 27, 2024, at Becker & Son Funeral Home in Fayette with Rev. Mike Jager officiating. Visitation will precede the service at the funeral home starting at 11:00 AM.
Georgia Rae, daughter of Dennis and Judy (Salmon) Conner was born April 13, 1971, in West Union. She received her education in Boscobel, Wisconsin, graduating from Boscobel High School in 1989. After a very successful high school career as a basketball player, Georgia continued her education at Upper Iowa University in Fayette, where she once again was a standout basketball player. She was recognized and inducted into the Upper Iowa University Athletic Hall of Fame. Georgia graduated from Upper Iowa with a degree in Teaching. She began her career in teaching at Savanna, Illinois, prior to North Fayette in West Union. In addition to teaching, Georgia was a basketball and volleyball coach. Tragically, Georgia’s teaching and coaching career concluded following an automobile accident in 1997. Georgia was an avid sports fan and loved teaching and coaching kids.
Georgia is survived by her brother, Robert (Laura) Conner of Oelwein; sisters, Connie Conner of Sumner and Denise Conner of Westgate; step-father, Les Tyler of Oelwein; uncles, Dennis, Sr. (Shirley) Salmon of New Hartford and Richard Minor of DeWitt; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; uncles, Donald, Roger, and Darwin “Beezer” Conner, and Sonny Salmon; and aunts, Melva Conner and Rhonda Miner.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Friday, December 15, 2023, at Bethel Presbyterian Church in West Union with Rev. Don Best officiating and assisted by Alex Popenhagen. Pall Bearers for the service will be wearing one of Grandpa Charlie's ties. Visitation will be held from 3:00 PM – 7:00 PM, Thursday, December 14th at Becker & Son Funeral Home in Fayette and for one hour preceding services at the Church on Friday. Memorials may be made in Chuck’s name to the Lima Church and Cemetery Association, West Union Lions Organization, Wadena Veterans Memorial, or Palmer Lutheran Auxiliary Foundation.
Charles “Chuck” “Charlie” Kenneth Baumler was born August 19, 1932, on a farm near St. Lucas, Iowa to Vincent Baumler and Ellen (Gager) Baumler Stevens. He went to country school. In 1953 he began active duty with the Army and served during the Korean War. He returned home and lived near Wadena, where he met his wife of 67 years, Patricia Jones. They married on August 11, 1956, in Maynard, Iowa. They raised their family on acreages outside of Ossian, Maynard, and Fayette and settled on a farm outside of Wadena. Chuck worked as a farmer, as a type-setter at the Fayette County Union for 28 years, and then as a Postmaster Replacement in Randalia before retiring in July 2000. Charlie was a longtime member of the West Union Lions Club (served as treasurer), Palmer Memorial Hospital Board (served as president), Bethel Presbyterian Church and Session Member, Fayette County Zoning Board Member, and Lima Cemetery Association serving as president for thirty-seven years. Charles enjoyed farming, raising sheep and cattle, coon hunting, collecting marbles and coins, and starting each morning with Little Debbie powdered sugar donuts. He also enjoyed their many years in various card clubs. But what truly brought a smile to his face was his children and grandchildren. In his later years, he looked forward to his daily Jeopardy time. Charles was a self-made man, a good provider for his family, with a strong work ethic, a love of the land and his country, and a proud veteran.
Charlie is survived by his wife, Patricia, and their three daughters, Elaine (Gerry) Vande Vorde of Stanley, LeAnn (Ken) Popenhagen of Wadena, and Stacie (Pat) Gorkow of Van Horne, nine grandchildren Eric Medberry, Laura Albert, Jena Cella, Kenan Willey, Alex Popenhagen, Patrick Gorkow, Bennett Gorkow, Reagan Gorkow, Tiffany Rau, and special granddaughter Bia Malouf Schlesinger in Brazil. Nineteen great-grandchildren Isla, Harper, Davis, Daphney, Dora, Maverick, Brooks, Ella, Aubrey, Henry, Jordon, Patrik, Alyson, Morgan, Rachel, Alexa, Amya, Aleya, Trey, and 4 great-great-grandchildren Kylier, Kinley, Ellie, Briella. He is also survived by his siblings Rosalyn “Toots” Lucas of Cresco, Richard (Sarah) Baumler of Warner Robins, Georgia, and Waneta (Keith) Gage of Oelwein, brother-in-law Ed Gage of Wadena, and sisters-in-law Eileen (Floyd) Fagle of Oelwein, Kathy Jones (Sherwin Skar) of Marshall, Minnesota, and Susan (Bill) Yarrington of Puposky, Minnesota. He is also survived and loved by many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his great-grandson, Lucas Popenhagen, and his siblings and their spouses, Eleanor (Edwin) Molokken, Robert “Dewey” (Winifred) Baumler, William Lucas, Virginia Gage, and his sister-in-law Cynthia Lantz.

Milford, son of Alfred and Thelma (Baker) Stearns was born May 15, 1928, in Fayette, Iowa. He received his education in the Fayette Schools. Milford served in the United States Navy and was stationed in Hawaii. He worked for Carnation which later became Nestle in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin for many years. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, going to the casino riverboat, going for drives in the woods, watching air shows, eating watermelon and watching nature shows.
Milford is survived by his children, Nora Stearns of Santa Cruz, California, Stacy Oshkeshequoam of Keshona, Wisconsin, Dawn Oshkeshequoam of Green Bay and Kaye Oskeshequoam of Keshona, Wisconsin; eight grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; seven siblings, John, Ed, Alan, Laurel, Mavis, Kaye, and Janis; and special friend, Betty Tinken.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Chuck; mother of his youngest three children, Elizabeth “Betty Ann” Oshkeshequoam; and grandson, Kelvin Clause.

Adelia Kaye, daughter of Donald and Erma (Holtzman) Van Sickle was born January 8, 1942, at the family’s home, rural Fayette County. She was baptized and confirmed in the Methodist faith. Kaye received her education in the Fayette Schools graduating from Fayette High School in 1961. On June 30, 1967, she was united in marriage with Clarence (Durwood) Bergholt at the First United Methodist Church in Fayette. To this union a daughter was born, Lisa. Kaye had various jobs over the years including being a server at Ott’s Drive In, selling TriChem paints, helping out at the flower shop and babysitting for various children. Kaye was a long time faithful member of the First United Methodist Church in Fayette where she was very active in the Women’s Circle. She enjoyed cross stitching to create things for others, was a big fan of Upper Iowa basketball, and loved Fayette activities especially Watermelon Days. Kaye was presented with many health challenges in her life, but with help from the community that didn’t slow her down
Kaye is survived by her daughter, Lisa (Mike) Kock of Adel; two grandsons, Ben and Sam Kock; and two sisters, Anabel Peabody of Beaverton, Oregon and Linda Wietz of Hamlin, New York.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clarence in 2007; three brothers, Jim, Dick, and Doyle Van Sickle; and sister, Donna Mueller.

Nancy is survived by her daughter, April of Fayette; brother, Gary Shepard of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin; 2 nephews; three nieces; significant other, Roy Conrade of Fayette; and close friend, Roxanne Conrade of Fayette.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Cindy Manderfield.

Following graduation, Michelle worked at Upper Iowa University in Fayette for several years, until her health no longer permitted. She has been a resident of Waterloo for the past twenty years. Michelle enjoyed reading and was a fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Michelle is survived by her mother, Sandra Thompson of Fayette; sister, Janelle Pityer of Fayette; brother, Jamie (Buddi) Thompson of Glenwood; three nieces, Courtney Pityer, Carissa Pityer, and Alli Brooks; three nephews, Christopher Pityer, Kolton Thompson, and Jacob Brooks; aunts and uncles, Rodney and Julie Thompson of LaCrescent, Minnesota and Jane Hildebrandt of Sumner; and several cousins and extended family.

Dorothy Marie, daughter of Carl and Hilda (Strempke) Bentley was born April 16, 1931, in rural Bremer County. Dorothy was a member of the graduating class of 1948 from Fayette High School. On October 12, 1949, she was united in marriage with Willard Langerman at the First United Methodist Church in Fayette. Dorothy worked at the Coffee Nook, People’s Natural Gas for many years, prior to working at Upper Iowa University until her retirement. In addition to working at People’s Natural Gas, she and her husband owned and operated the Snack Shop in Fayette for several years. Dorothy was a long time faithful member of the First United Methodist Church in Fayette, Fayette American Legion Auxiliary, and served on the Grandview Cemetery Board. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, feeding squirrels and birds, and dogs. Dorothy baked cakes for fifty years, including weddings, graduations, and birthdays.
Dorothy is survived by her son, Douglas (Mary) Langerman of Fredericksburg; two grandchildren, Ryan Langerman of Sioux City and Megan Lee of Springfield, Missouri; brother, Wayne (Helen) Bentley of Fayette; sister, Vivian Orr of Fayette; and step-brother, Mark (Kathy) Bentley of Green Bay, Wisconsin.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Willard in 1992; son, Dennis in 2015; brother, Clair Bentley; and sisters, Ethel Henning and Fydolis Ehrlich.

Gene was born September 20, 1929, only child of Clyde and Carol (Regele) Sliter, and grew up on the family farm near Lamont, Iowa and graduated from Lamont High School in 1947.
He married Betty Jean Clendenen on September 24, 1950. They were blessed with three children, Janet, Steven, and Stuart. Betty Jean preceded him in death on December 3, 1989.
Gene served in the Army from 1951-53 during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of American Legion Post 219 of Arlington and had been a continuous member of the Legion for over fifty years. He was also a long-time Farm Bureau Member.
Gene was a member of the Fayette United Methodist Church, and for over 25 years also frequently attended St. Luke’s Church in Dubuque, Iowa. He was a lifetime member of the Association of Lincoln Presenters and looked forward each year to attending the annual conventions, with other Lincoln “look alikes.”
Gene was retired farmer. He loved driving – whether it be his Dodge pick-up, Lincoln automobile, lawnmower, tractor, or other farm machinery. He loved being outside, tiling the soil, planting, or harvesting crops, mowing – and after retirement still kept busy by helping neighboring farmers in any way he could.
He enjoyed smoking his pipe, playing cards, and having coffee with his friends, and fishing or hunting whenever he had a chance. He was a loyal companion to his special friend, Eleanor Jach, in Dubuque, Iowa. Eleanor preceded him in death on July 25, 2018.
Gene had much pride in the accomplishments of his children and their families. His children and grandchildren survive: Janet Refior, her daughters Vicki Arthur and Sharon (Kelly) Miyamoto and Gene’s great-granddaughter Marissa and great-great grandson, Skylar, all of Colorado Springs CO; Steven (Lisa) Sliter and daughter Dakota and step-son, Paul all of Hampton, Iowa; Stuart (Denise) Sliter of Mt. Horeb, WI and their daughters Lynn (Jason) Demaray and Gene’s great grandchildren, McKenna, Cashton, and Oakley of New Hampton , Iowa; and Erin (Patrick) Beidle and Gene’s great-grandchildren, Brooklyn and William of Montgomery, Texas. Gene’s son-in-law, Richard Refior preceded him in death on November 17, 2010.

Lewis Douglas, son of C.G. and Della (Bullock) Shipwash was born December 9, 1924, in Lake City, Florida. His family moved to Prescott, Arizona, when he was a young boy. Louie received his education in the Prescott Schools. He served in the United States Navy from 1941 until being honorably discharged in 1947. Louie served in the Pacific Theater during his time in the military. On April 14, 1946, he was united in marriage with Betty “B.J.” Staggs in Prescott, Arizona. Louie worked as a truck driver, mechanic, and construction worker, prior to a career as a business agent for the Teamsters, and was a warehouseman for the Cholla Power Plant in Joseph City, Arizona. He retired from the power plant for a brief time, prior to working as a grader, a job he said he really liked. Louie was able to fix anything, whether it be working on a car or making the family’s camper that they used for many family trips. In 2009, he and his wife, Betty “B.J.” moved to Fayette to be closer to their daughter, Melle. Louie enjoyed living in Fayette and loved spending time at Klock’s Island Park. One thing he also liked to do was have his daughter buy donuts and then he would take them to the staff at Maple Crest Manor; he felt that they had treated his wife so well when she lived there, that he wanted to show his appreciation.
Louie is survived by his daughter, Melle Starsen of Fayette; granddaughter; great-granddaughter, Alexis Rose Scholbrock; two step-great-granddaughters, Braelyn and Kasydi Meyer; sister, Linda (Jim) Lewis of St. George, Utah; three nieces, Nancy (Doyle) Miller of Sun City, Arizona, Sandy Oller of Phoenix, Arizona, and Gerry Oller of Escondido, California; and great-nieces and nephews, Michael (Peggy) Oller of Cave Creek, Arizona, Sherri (Glenn) Kerr of Brooksville, Florida, Steve Oller of Carlsbad, California, Brian (Julie) Oller of Castle Rock, Colorado, Dave Oller of Las Vegas, Nevada, Kerri (Jesse) Haines of Sun City, Arizona, Eddie Miller of Sun City, Arizona, Barbara Woods of Phoenix, Arizona, Jeff Staggs (Sue Ellyn) of Tucson, Arizona, Cynthia Kempner (Alan) of Scottsdale, Arizona, Sheri (Berkeley) Bate of Utah, Colleen (Shane) Lunt of Gilbert, Arizona, and Jeannie (Jared) Arnett of Gilbert, Arizona. Obituary Preview: Alma Ruth Grimes Aanes, 94, of Fayette, passed away Tuesday, July 12, 2022 at Maple Crest Manor, Fayette.
Alma was born October 23, 1927 in rural Fayette County, the daughter of Robert Leroy and Gladys Ruth Doan Grimes. She attended country schools and graduated from Elgin High School in 1945. She also attended Upper Iowa University. She married Earl Leonard Aanes on October 12, 1946 in Elgin and they moved to Fayette in 1949. They divorced in 1976. In later years, they rekindled a friendship and were able to do some extensive travelling. He died in December 2017. Alma babysat for many years for college students and friends while her children were still at home. She was an excellent seamstress, rebuilding fur coats, sewing wedding dresses, prom dresses, and clothes for the girl and their friends. One year she made pajamas for all seven grandkids for Christmas. She also worked at Upper Iowa University for about 25 years, the last fifteen years as Director of Alumni, retiring in 1989. Alma loved to play cards – bridge, 500, and Canasta were her favorites. But if someone would sit down, she always had a deck handy. She also enjoyed cribbage which she and Steve would play for hours. She was very active in the Fayette Methodist Church and Methodist Women. You would usually find her in the kitchen. She was a 67 year member of P.E.O. Chapter FG, Fayette.
Alma’s favorite job in the early years was her kids. Summers were spent tent camping all over the state of Iowa. Janny says, “If it was free, we camped there”. And then came the grandkids, which she spoiled beyond belief. Summer vacations and Christmas at Grandma’s house was always special. She was an excellent cook, especially her lemon meringue pie, Norwegian pastries and oatmeal pancakes. She was loved dearly by her family and she returned that love in words, deeds and actions. She will be missed by all.
Alma is survived by her children, Susie (Tim) Barry of Appleton, WI., Janny Dupuis of Wisconsin Rapids, WI., and Paul (William Best) Aanes of Spring Lake Park, MN.; daughter-in-law Susan Aanes of New London, IA.; grandchildren, Scott Aanes, Sarah (Christian) Prochaska, Katie Barry, Casey (Jen) Barry, Kelsie (Bobbie) Barry, Greg (Abby) Dupuis, and Stephanie (Dave) Gotlibson; eleven great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchildren; nieces and nephews, cousins, and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; son Steven; son-in-law Dave Dupuis; and sister and brother-in-law, Georgia and Mitch Mitchell.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, August 6, 2022 at the Fayette United Methodist Church. Pastor Mike Jager will officiate. Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM at the church until time of the service. A light luncheon will follow in the church hall followed by inurnment in Elgin Cemetery, Elgin, Iowa. A memorial has been established to the Fayette United Methodist Church.

Gary Peter, son of Martin and Hazel (Klein) Weyland was born January 24, 1940, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. He was baptized and confirmed at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Gilbertville. Gary received his education in the Don Bosco Catholic Schools, graduating from Don Bosco High School in 1959. Upon graduation, he began his professional career at the Gilbertville Locker, prior to working at John Deere & Co. in Waterloo, retiring on May 31, 1997, following thirty-one years. On June 20, 1970, he was united in marriage with Donna Hultman at the Congregational Church in Cedar Falls. The couple made their home in the Waterloo area until moving to Wadena in 2005. Gary enjoyed bowling (was involved in many bowling leagues), golfing, fishing, was an excellent pool player, enjoyed social time playing cards and drinking coffee with his local group, and gravel cruises with his furry companion, Maggie.
Gary is survived by his daughter, Barbara (James) Karn of Loveland, Colorado; three granddaughters, Mindra (Donald Richard) Balk of West Union, Holiday (Arturo) Nagle Zuniga of Los Angeles, California, Darian (Jeremy) Nagle-Gamm of Iowa City; four grandsons, Zachary Karn of Fort Collins, Colorado, Luke Karn of Chicago, Matthew (Marta) Karn of Fort Collins, Colorado, and Jared Kent of Wadena; eight great-grandchildren, Bradley (Samantha), Gary (Danielle), and Joanne Balk, Alexandria and Miles Kent, Anya and Sasha Gamm, and Greyson and Oakley Karn; five siblings, Carolyn Jussely of Oklahoma, Neil Weyland of Cedar Rapids, Beverly Culbert of Waterloo, Dave (Cindy) Weyland of Gilbertville, and Beth (Tom) Swyers of Cedar Rapids; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Donna in 2018; daughter and son-in-law, Susan (2017) and Mick Nagle (2019), granddaughter, Sabrina Kent in 2018; and one niece and two nephews.

Ivan Otto, son of Otto and Lydia (Tietz) Jager was born September 7, 1936, in Readlyn. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Readlyn. Ivan graduated from Readlyn High School in 1954. Following graduation, he began working at Rath Meat Packing Plant in Waterloo, prior to serving in the United States Army. Ivan was stationed in Korea during his service. Upon his honorable discharge, he continued his working career at Rath’s. In 1965, Ivan was united in marriage with Carolyn Crew in Independence. The couple made their home in La Porte City. After 22 years being employed at Rath’s, Ivan began working at the University of Northern Iowa in the Public Safety Department. He was a long time member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in La Porte City, the Lion’s Club, and was a Boy Scout Leader. Ivan and his wife, Carolyn enjoyed traveling. In 2020, he moved to Fayette to live with his son, Rev. Mike and daughter-in-law, Joy.
Ivan is survived by his son, Rev. Mike (Joy) Jager of Fayette; two grandchildren, Jayson Schlarmann of Cedar Falls and Tara (Joe) Henry of Waverly; and five great-grandchildren, Bella and Brendyn Schlarmann, and Hadley, Hayden, and Harlowe Henry.

Henry Albert, son of Tilmer and Ethel (Nelson) Thompson was born July 12, 1941, at home in Clermont. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith in Clermont. Henry received his education in the Country Schools, rural Clermont. On January 31, 1970, he was united in marriage with Barbara Fish at West Clermont Lutheran Church in Clermont. The couple farmed in the Randalia area for many years. Henry worked at the Maynard Co-Op for twenty-five years and also delivered newspapers for the Des Moines Register for twenty-five years. Following his retirement, Henry remained busy working as a farmhand for TSG Farms. Henry was a proud supporter of local Volunteer Fire Departments, including Maynard, Westgate, and Hawkeye. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, tubing, crossword puzzles, playing cards, especially euchre and poker, and was a gardening enthusiast.
Henry is survived by his son, Brian of West Union; sisters-in-law, Patricia Potter of Decorah, Roberta Anderson of Plymouth, and Sandra Thompson of Fayette; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Dana Leitzman, and Dave and Diane Ungerer, all of Hawkeye.

Obituary Preview: Iris Dolores Willsey Woodard, loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend passed away on Friday, September 17, 2021. She was born May 6, 1928, in Brough, Saskatchewan, Canada, to Dora and James Willsey. In the fall of 1936, the family moved to Ontario where they farmed fourteen miles from the town of Rainy River. They raised saddle horses and Shetland ponies. In 1939 the Willseys moved back to the United States.
They settled in Waverly, Iowa where Iris (age 11) entered the seventh grade. She joined the Girl Scouts along with her best friend and continued scouting through high school where she achieved senior service scout level (equivalent of today’s gold award). After graduating from Waverly High School, she attended Iowa State Teachers’ College at Cedar Falls for one year of pre-nursing, and then graduated from Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in Chicago (1949). In about 1947 the Willsey family moved to West Union, Iowa where Iris met George Barrell Woodard, Jr. They dated, fell in love, eloped, and were married on October 12, 1951.
While George joined his father in the insurance and real estate business in West Union, Iris worked as a registered nurse. When Palmer Memorial Hospital was first being built in West Union, Iris was asked to design and set up the surgical unit. Later Palmer representatives asked her to set up a Medical Records Department. Although Iris quit working full time once she had children, she continued to work at mobile health clinics and assisting individuals with medical care in their homes for years. Iris was a faithful member of Bethel Presbyterian Church and valued her opportunities to serve God and others through her church. Iris became involved in a diverse range of community activities over the years. She was active in the Hospital Auxiliary, served on the board of the Northeast Iowa Mental Health Institute for several years, the North Fayette County Community School Board for sixteen years, held all offices in a women’s philanthropic organization called P.E.O which she belonged to for 66 years, was co-founder of a Gourmet Club, and was an active member of the West Union Country Club. Iris helped lead numerous fundraisers and was a diligent worker in support of many of her husband’s civic activities. Iris was selected as West Union’s Citizen of the Year in 1984.
Iris was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Marcy Alcorn and Marcy’s husband Vern Alcorn, her sister-in-law Mary Woodard Howes and Mary’s husband Ed Howes. Iris is survived by her loving husband of nearly 70 years, George, and her three children; Nancy and her husband Bill Marker of Clinton, NJ, Dick and Jennifer Woodard of West Union, and Jane and her husband Jonathan Aves of Winston-Salem, NC; four grandchildren, Stephanie and Alex Marker and Brittany and Marissa Aves; her sister’s - sons Kim and Kent Colberg and their families; nephews Brian and Steve Howes and their families.

Dixie Lee, daughter of Delbert and Roberta (McPherson) Bell was born November 27, 1935, in Aberdeen, South Dakota. She graduated from West Union High School in 1953. While attending West Union High School, she met Edgar Traeger and the couple was united in marriage on June 5, 1955, in West Union. Edgar died in 1960. A short time later she was introduced to Thomas Hennig and the couple would marry on October 19, 1961, in Nashua. The family made their home in Fayette, a home that Tom built. Thomas’ death occurred in 1993. Dixie worked as a telephone operator, ran the Eldorado Store, was a homemaker, and worked at Maple Crest as a C.N.A.. Social Work , and Activities Coordinator. After retirement, she volunteered at Maple Crest and for hospice which included training many hospice volunteers. In 1999, she was honored as Hospice Volunteer of the year by Governor Branstad. She was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church in Fayette. She enjoyed sewing for family and friends- making wedding dresses, altering, quilting and creating church banners. Dixie also loved children and often had her grandchildren visit. Always with a smile to share, Dixie was an encourager and friend, opening her home to many.
The family would like to thank Maple Crest Manor, Corridor Crossing Place and Essence of Life Hospice for the wonderful care they provided.
Dixie is survived by her sons, Larry Hennig of Middleburg, Florida, Edgar, III (Kathy) Traeger of Readlyn, and Keith (Mary) Hennig of Evansville, Wisconsin; daughters, Carolyn (Terry) Kiser of Cedar Rapids, Sandy (Richard) Hogan of Central City, Nancy Gerson of Griffin, Georgia, Brenda (Chris) Kelly of Marion,, and Barbara (Randy) Holub of Robins; twenty-eight grandchildren; forty-seven great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and brother, Stanley Bell of La Crosse, Wisconsin.

While in high school, he participated in several athletics. Mark was a life long resident of Fayette and has been employed by Fayette County for the past twenty years. In addition to his employment with Fayette County, he also helped his brother, Tim in the kitchen at DTS Pub. He was a fan of the Los Angeles Rams, Minnesota Twins, and Iowa Hawkeyes. Mark had a very selfless personality, and showed that by helping anyone in need.

Dot was born in Honolulu, HI. Her parents were Charles and Angeline Caroline (Rodriguez) Barney. Dot survived the Great Depression, the polio epidemic, and the attack on Pearl Harbor. Dot’s mother died when she was 10-years-old and Dot took on the domestic responsibilities of helping her father raise her 3 younger siblings. Her brothers and sister often looked at her as their mother since she would skimp on grocery expenses to budget and buy them each birthday and Christmas gifts each year. Dot was a 1946 graduate of Roosevelt High School in Honolulu. On July 8th,1950 Dot married the love of her life, William Edward Killoran Sr., at Mary Star of the Sea Church in Honolulu and became a military wife. Together they were blessed with large loving family.
Dot is survived by her three children Christine Mary Barrantes, William Edward Killoran Jr. and Kathleen “Kitty” Guyer, 8 grandchildren Jessica (Bret) Brinkmann, Jason (Seraina) Killoran, Kelly (Wes) Foster, Jacob (Brianna) Guyer, Samuel (Jennah) Guyer, Mariah Guyer, Isaac Guyer, and Joshua Guyer. Great grandchildren, Harper and Francis Killoran, William Guyer, Emily Brinkmann and one Guyer due in June and August.
Preceded in death by her parents, husband, two infant siblings, sister Geraldien Miller, and brother Edward Barney.
