Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am on Saturday, August 18th, 2018 at St. Ann’s Church with Fr. Benjamin Tremmel, OSB as Celebrant. Burial will follow in the St. Ann’s Cemetery. A parish rosary will be recited at 6:30 pm on Friday, Aug. 17th, 2018 at St. Ann’s Church, Effingham with visitation to follow until 8:30 pm. The Becker Chapel, Effingham is handling the arrangements and friends may call from 9:00 am until 4:30 pm on Friday at the Becker Chapel, Effingham. Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Ann’s Church or to the Atchison County Rescue and may be sent in care of the funeral home. Mary L. Hanway was born on Dec. 2, 1923 near St. Joseph, MO, the daughter of Felix and Rose (Kirschner) Hanway. She graduated from the Covenant of the Sacred Heart High School, St. Joseph, MO in 1941. Mary was a farm wife and homemaker for most of her life. She was a member of the St. Ann’s Church, Effingham, KS, and served on the Altar Society. She was a member of the Happy Hour Club, Effingham, the Forty-Eight’rs Club, and was a former Girl Scout Leader. Mary enjoyed raising flowers, traveling, making ceramics and crocheting. She was superintendent for flowers for many years at the Atchison County Fair, Effingham.
Mary was married to Jim Noll on April 12, 1958 at Immaculate Conception, St. Joseph, MO. He survives of the home in Effingham. Additional survivors include a son, Eric Noll, Effingham, KS, two daughters, Rita Noll (Bruce Gant) Council Grove, KS, and Jenny Henderson, Alma, KS, three grandchildren John Henderson, Arlington, TX, Rosemary Henderson, Alma, KS, and Jim Gant, Council Grove, KS, a brother, Donald Hanway, St. Joseph, MO, a sister, Dorothy Halling, Denton, KS, and many nieces and nephews. Her parents, three brothers, Felix Hanway, Jr, Leonard Hanway, and Charles Hanway, and one sister, Catherine Hart preceded her in death.

William Caylor - June 24, 1931 - June 24, 2015

Obituary Preview: William G. Caylor, 84, of Paradise Lake, Effingham, KS, passed away Wednesday, June 24, 2015 at the Atchison Hospital. Funeral services will be 2:00 pm, Monday, June 29, 2015 at the Becker Chapel in Effingham with Rev. Jeff Cochran, officiating. Burial will follow in the Lancaster (KS) Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 1:00 pm until the time of service at the funeral home. Memorial contributions in honor of Mr. Caylor are suggested to the American Heart Association. Bill was born June 24, 1931 in Rich Hill, Missouri, the son of John and Mary Ellen (Noah) Caylor. At the age of 17, Bill joined the US Air Force where he retired after 23 years as a Master Sergeant. Bill served as a flight engineer for C130’s having flown many missions during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. While in the Air Force, Bill was able to graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management from Midwestern State University, Wichita Falls, TX. Following his retirement from the military, Bill had worked for the former Rockwell International Steel Foundry in Atchison, was a Deputy Sheriff for Atchison County and had been in charge of the Deputy Sheriff Reserve Officers organization, worked security at the Golden Eagle Casino at Horton, and he and his wife, Deleta, had managed the Best Western Motel in Atchison for 12 years. Bill was a member of the Effingham Union Church and former member of the American Legion Post #6 in Atchison. Bill enjoyed fishing and loved the time he got to spend with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Bill was married to Deleta D. Robertson on June 28, 1953 in Lamar, MO.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Deleta Caylor, of the home; son, Bill (Glenda) Caylor, Everest; daughter, Cindy (Thomas) Jones, Leavenworth, KS; four step sisters, Marilyn Sue Hastings, Alberta Petruskevich, Joanne Hutchinson, and Majorie Harris; grandchildren, Brian (Sara) Caylor, Brandon (Ashley) Caylor, Adam Caylor, Ben Dodge, Rusty Sullivan, Denise Jones, Tabatha Jones and Chrystal Caylor; six great-grandchildren, Lola, Elijah, Amaya, Zoey, Abby, and Tyler.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, John.

Thelma was born on Aug. 9, 1921 in Monrovia, Kansas the daughter of James Allen and Nellie Dunbar (Smith) Christie. She attended grade school in Effingham and graduated from Effingham High School in 1939. She received her Normal Teachers training from Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia, KS.
Mrs. Hoffman was a Elementary School teacher for many years in rural Atchison County and Jefferson Co. grade schools. She had also served as Principal for the Effingham Grade School. The Hoffman’s raised their family on a dairy farm near Effingham until 1986, when they retired. Thelma was a member of the Effingham Union Church and a member of the 48er’s Club. She enjoyed her family, cooking, and word search puzzles.
She was married to Mac LeRoy Hoffman on June 1, 1946 at the Monrovia Methodist Church. Mr. Hoffman preceded her in death on Oct. 7, 2009. Survivors include three sons; John (Laurie) Hoffman, Sioux Falls, SD., James Hoffman, and Jeffrey (Tana) Hoffman, of Effingham, KS, a daughter; Ann (Darrell) Christensen, Topeka, KS., thirteen grandchildren, twenty-four great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Her parents, husband, Mac L. Hoffman, three brothers; Alvie, James Estel, and John Allen Christie, daughter-in-law Sandi (Pruitt) Hoffman and one grandson Benjamin Alan Hoffman preceded her in death.

Joseph was born March 10, 1930 in Atchison, KS the son of Joseph and Helen (Hayes) Brentano. He graduated from ACCHS in 1948. Joseph served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He worked as a mail carrier for the Unites States post office, retiring in 1986. He was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church and the VFW in Atchison. Joe enjoyed working in his yard, his fruit trees and flowers, going fishing. He especially enjoyed his family.
He married Grace Coupe on June 6, 1952. She preceded him in death in 1984. Survivors include five sons; Joseph (Riza) Brentano, Jr. Murrieta CA, David Brentano, Shawnee Mission, KS, Daniel Brentano, Shawnee Mission, KS, Paul (Yijing) Brentano, Leawood, KS, Mark Brentano, Lawrence, KS, a daughter; Marcia Webb, Excelsior Springs, MO, two sisters; Sr. Alice Brentano, Atchison, KS, Marguerite Wack, St. Joseph, MO. Twelve grandchildren, three great grandchildren and a special friend Margaret Diebolt, Effingham, KS.
He was also preceded by his parents, a brother; John Brentano and a sister; Bernice Barnett.

Roberta was born on April 28, 1923 in Nortonville, KS the daughter of Julius G. and Ruth E. (Thompson) Nieman. She graduated from Nortonville High School in 1940. Mrs. Pyne worked as a secretary for the ASCS Office, Effingham for many years before retiring in 1975. She and her husband also owned and operated Ayers Auto Supply Store, Atchison since 1961 where Mrs. Pyne was the bookkeeper. She was a member of the St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, Nortonville, and was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE). She enjoyed genealogy, baking and especially her grandchildren.
She was married to C.B. Pyne on March 20, 1949 at St. Matthew in Nortonville, KS. Mr. Pyne preceded her in death on Jan 23, 1992. Survivors include a son; James R. Pyne, Effingham, KS, two daughters; Peggy ( Steve ) Coder, Effingham, KS, and Pamela (Jim) Oswald, Effingham, KS, a brother; Daryl Nieman, Nortonville, KS; three grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Sandi was born March 31, 1955 in Atchison, KS the daughter of William 'Bill' and Patricia (Zeit) Pruett. She graduated from ACCHS in 1973. Sandi was the Secretary for the Dean of Students office at Benedictine College, a position she cherished, along with everyone she worked with, for the past 12 years. She also worked for Marigold's Bakery on Saturday's. Sandi loved to shop and keep up with the current fashion trends. She served on the St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee and always looked forward to the parade. Sandi was extremely devoted to her family and cherished time spent with her grandkids. Sandi married James 'Jim' Hoffman on December 30, 1972 at the St. Louis Church in Good Intent, KS. He survives of the home in Effingham.
