Obituary Preview: Mary Frances Spriggs Sherwood, 87, of Lawrenceville passed away Monday, April 29, 2024 following a period of declining health.
Born April 3, 1937 in Dawson County to the late Raymond and Nellie Spriggs, she had lived in Lawrenceville since 1967. Frances was formerly employed by Sears Credit Department after which she was employed in the corporate office of Waffle House until her retirement in 1998. She was a devoted member of North Metro First Baptist Church and enjoyed gardening, travel, and spending time with her family.
Surviving are her daughters and sons in law, Laura and Dwight Bues, Sterling, VA, Linda and Ken Vickery, Dacula; and grandchildren, Jack Bues, Charle Bues, and Matthew Vickery.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 1, 2024 at 1 o’clock at Bearden Funeral Home Chapel. Dr. Frank Cox will officiate. Interment will follow in the Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 12 noon until the funeral hour.

William was of Christian faith and was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Peggy Van Dorp, Siblings, John, Brownie, Lee, Margaret; parents, Hank and Minnie Van Dorp.
Surviving are his children, Rhonda Allen (Rex) of Cumming, Melissa Groome (Fred) of Dawsonville, Craig Van Dorp (Meribeth) of Oak Island, North Carolina; grandchildren, Amber Spry (Jonathan), Christa Townsend, Dustin Townsend (Janen), Zach Groome (Allie), Cody Groome (Kim), Cali Crane (Jared); great-grandchildren, Brayden Spry (Brittany), Brynna Spry, Charlotte Crane, Jack Crane; great-great-grandchildren, Judah Spry; siblings, Dick, Al, Jerry, Willie, Fran; other relatives.

Born June 30, 1967 and raised in Michigan, Ken had been a resident of Dawson County for over 20 years. He attended Local Church Dawson with his family. A proud graduate of Michigan State University, Ken spent his career working as a CPA. He owned and operated his own accounting firm in Cumming, Georgia. A loving and devoted husband and father, his biggest joy in life was his family. He was an avid runner, enjoyed spending time on the water and could always have a good time with his fun, quirky, quick-witted personality. Ken was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Roberta Kurtz and a nephew, Marc Schadler.
Surviving are his wife of 26 years, Kim Kurtz; children, Emily Kurtz, Lauren Kurtz, Will Kurtz; siblings, Donald Kurtz (Diane), Michael Kurtz (Sylvia), Phyllis Schadler (Chuck), Sandra Kurtz, James Kurtz (Michelle), Cynthia Lown (Thomas), Pamela Kurtz, Brenda Kurtz; nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Born December 21, 1966, Chad was raised in Dahlonega where he was a 1985 graduate of Lumpkin County High School. He started his career working with his father at B&B Crane until starting CB Crane Service that he owned and operated for many years. He also worked alongside his wife with C&T Cattle Co. and Hauling. He loved riding his tractor, spending time on his farm, working cow sales, and most of all his family and being a Papa. Chad was preceded in death by his parents, Larry and Jane Barrett and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Carl Dean and Marjorie Crane.
Surviving are his wife of 35 years, Tracy Barrett of Menlo; children, Taylor and Kelly Barrett of Dahlonega; Chloe Barrett of Menlo; grandchildren, Oakley Barrett and Boyd Barrett; sisters and brother-in-law, Tracy Echols of Gainesville; Stacy and Hunt Donaldson of Dawsonville; brother, Ted Barrett of Dawsonville; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Ronnie and Cheryl Crane, Jason and Maranda Crane, Sheila and Dennis Brooksher, Robin and Tom Chandler, all of Dawsonville; other relatives. She was a lifetime resident of Dawson County and was a member of Dawsonville Baptist Church. She retired from USDA after 30 years working with the “best people, farmers.” She had been on the DFCS Board, Library Board, Jury Commission, and worked as a church clerk. She was valedictorian of the Class of 1950.
In the past, she enjoyed going to church, meeting friends at the Pool Room to visit and drink tea at their reserved table, basketball games, class reunions, reading, meeting old friends for lunch each month, and family get togethers.
After God, her family was the dearest thing in her life to Geneva and she felt “so blessed.” Survivors include beloved children and mates, Dr. Debra and Mike Lister, Joey and Betty Ann Bearden, Sherry and Emmett McCord, and Barry and Linda Bearden; adored grandchildren, Justin Bearden, Jenna and Josh Carpenter, Megan and Matt Murphy, Mallory and Alex Aycock, Jamie and Gerson Rodriguez, Kacie Bearden, and Karlie Bearden; cherished great grands, Jaydon Bearden, Emelyn Brown, Mason and Kate Murphy, Thomas and Hudson Aycock; Mateo, Lola, and Rosalia Rodriguez; and nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Geneva was preceded in death by her husband Bill Bearden, parents Edwin and Nell Burt, and sisters Margaret Kennedy and Evelyn King.

Born February 7, 1951, Pete grew up in Ohio before living in California and finally settling in Georgia. He had been a resident of Lumpkin County since 2022 and had previously resided in Jonesboro. He loved his family, his faith, and his bluegrass music. Pete was an active member of First Baptist Church of Dawsonville and was a talented musician who enjoyed playing his mandolin and guitar. A proud graduate of The Ohio State University, Pete was a passionate fan of college sports, “Go Buckeyes!”. He spent his career as a computer programmer with Delta Airlines until his retirement in 2016 and had enjoyed travelling the world alongside his beloved wife.
Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Nancy Elizabeth Adgate of Lumpkin County; children, Emily and Matt Langford of Sandy Springs, Andrew and Jade Adgate of Nashville, TN, William Adgate and Sarah Nix of Marshall, NC; grandchildren, Dean, Anna, Mia Hope, Violet, Flynn, Isaac; mother, Margaret “Peg” Adgate of LaHabra, CA; sister and brother-in-law, Sally and Neil Cooper of Irvine California; other relatives. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles “Chuck” Adgate.
A memorial service will be held Friday, May 3, 2024 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Dawsonville. Dr. Dustin Gillespie will officiate.

Born March 22, 1988, Kyle was a lifelong resident of Dawson County. He was a 2006 graduate of Dawson County High School and worked at Amicalola EMC. Kyle’s greatest love in life was his family. He loved their adventures, camping, coaching his children, and supporting them in all of their activities. He also enjoyed watching college sports and listening to music, especially on a country gold Saturday night. Kyle loved the Lord and attended Liberty Baptist Church with his family. He was a kind, funny, and easy-going soul who was loved by all who knew him. He will be dearly missed.

Donald Ray Stubbs - September 10, 1942 - April 07, 2024

Obituary Preview: Donald Ray Stubbs slipped away to his heavenly home on April 7, 2024, at his home in Denton, Texas.
He was born in Dallas, Texas on September 10, 1942, to Alonzo Harold Stubbs and Goldie Mae Harris Stubbs. In 1961 he graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and entered the University of North Texas where he joined the fraternity Phi Kappa Alpha. He completed his BBA and MBA at Southern Methodist University. Over his career he was employed by Collins Radio Company, Rockwell International and Boeing. His areas of expertise were budgets, negotiating contracts, cost accounting, and mentoring. Donald loved the Lord and served in many capacities as a church member in his lifetime, including Chairman of Deacons, Finance, SS Superintendent, Master of Ceremonies, Junior Church, and others. Donald enjoyed traveling with friends and family, which included trips to 45 states and 30 countries. His other hobbies included softball, baseball, golf, and bridge. He was an Atlanta Braves fan and felt fortunate to have played golf at St. Andrews Links in Scotland.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Harold Jr. (Margie) Stubbs, David (Ida) Stubbs, Michael (Anita) Stubbs, and sister Linda (Gene) Gentry.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Rochelle. Lundberg Stubbs; daughter Daphne (Sean) Daniels of Denton; son Derek Stubbs of Flowery Branch, Georgia; three grandchildren including Adrian Daniels (Robbie) Winn of Ft. Worth; Aubrey Daniels and Alden Daniels of Denton. Other survivors include nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 13, 2024 at 3 o’clock at Bearden Funeral Home Chapel. Dr. Jim Gaines will officiate. Interment will follow in the Big Canoe Chapel Cemetery.

Stephen had an outgoing personality and he never met a stranger. He was loved by many and preceded in death by his mother, Shirley Eakin Bernhard.

She was raised in the Buckhead area before becoming long-time resident of Dawsonville over the past 23 years. A homemaker at her death, she was formerly employed as a manager at Intech. Evelyn enjoyed making stained glass, watching the birds outside her home, and spending time with her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Grover and Marion Estelle Meinert and son, Stephen Chauncey Fry.
Surviving are her husband of 23 years, James H. “Jim” Manry, Dawsonville; three children, Tori Mount, Americus, Juli and Chris Dyer, Gainesville, Matthew Manry, Dahlonega, six grandchildren, Alexis, Alex, Brooklyn, Addison, Robbie and Carter.

John Luranc - February 11, 1938 - April 02, 2024

Obituary Preview: John Luranc 86, of Cumming, Georgia passed away peacefully on April 2, 2024.
Born in Utica, NY, John was the son of Polish immigrants and the youngest of seven children. John graduated salutatorian from Utica Free Academy in 1956. He began his career at General Electric shortly after high school where John was quickly recruited to work in the company’s drafting program utilizing his math and science abilities. Working full-time, John pursued his degree at night and graduated in 1973 from Empire State College with an engineering degree. While at GE, John met and later married the love of his life Marie on June 10, 1961. The couple lived in Utica where their first child, Joseph, was born. In 1965 GE moved them to Ormond Beach, FL for two years where John worked on the Apollo space program. They returned to Syracuse, NY where their second child, Susan, was born. In 1979, John’s career moved them back to Ormond Beach where they lived until 1983.
In 1983 FMC Corporation recruited John to fulfill a Director of Manufacturing and Engineering Computing position and they moved to Barrington, IL where they lived until 1995. John retired from FMC in 1995 and was invited to join the National Center for Supercomputing applications at the University of Illinois in Champaign, IL where he worked until 2000.
After John’s retirement from NCSA, the couple moved to their mountain retreat in Mars Hill, NC. John and Marie eventually settled in Dawsonville, GA to be closer to their children and grandchildren. John was a devout catholic and active member of Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church in Dawsonville, GA. John joined the Knights of Columbus fulfilling various roles within the group while meeting lifelong friends. John enjoyed learning and reading about World War II and traveling the world with close friends.
John is survived by his two children Joseph John Luranc of Jacksonville Beach, Florida and Susan Luranc Kurtz of Chamblee, Georgia; six grandchildren, Louisa Trippe Luranc, Joseph John Luranc, Jr., Samuel Hutson Luranc, Luke Thomas Kurtz, Alexandra Marie Kurtz “Lexi” and Andrew John Kurtz “AJ”. John’s wife Marie preceded him in death in 2018. The couple was married 56 years.
A funeral mass will be held for John at 11 o’clock on Monday morning, April 8, 2024, at Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church with Father Brian Higgins officiating.

Born December 10, 1941 to the late Willard and Edith Sosebee, Mike was raised in Pickens County and had been a resident of Dawsonville for over 50 years. A U.S. Army veteran, he spent his career working with gas and welding supplies until his retirement from Airgas following 50 years of service. Mike was the longest serving city councilman in Dawsonville history, serving multiple terms over 30 years. He was a member of New Life Church of God in Dawsonville. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Mary Sosebee of Dawsonville; sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Shonda Sosebee of Gainesville, Jason and Cathleen Sosebee of Alpharetta; grandchildren, Conner, Thomas “T.O.”, Lincoln; sisters, Joe Ann Dorsey, Joyce Evans, both of Jasper; sister-in-law, Judy Cox of Dawsonville; other relatives.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 27, 2024 at 2 p.m. at Bearden Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Mike Owens will officiate. Interment will follow in Dawsonville City Cemetery.

January 16, 1938, Sherman Ross Day was born to his wonderful parents Martha Rawlins (Brown) Day and Ross Snow Day in Draper Utah. Early in his life he gained a love for all sports. He developed a special ability to play basketball while raising mink and thinning sugar beets. With pleasure, he recalls coaches and teammates from Draper High School, All Church, and Australian church mission basketball. His love of sports was a constant in his life. He was an avid golfer, softball player, fisherman, high school and little league and church team coach in a variety of sports, collegiate athletic director and inaugural conference commissioner, a senior vice president for the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games (ACOG), and season ticket holder of his local high school and college teams.
Sherm was married to the love of his life, the late Afton J. Day (Afton Eunice Jensen). Their marriage was solemnized for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake City, Utah Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on December 27, 1960. They would work together as he earned his bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University, master’s degree from Illinois, and Doctorate from the University of Georgia. Sherm and Afton would find themselves becoming Georgians with brief stops in Oregon, Illinois, and Washington D.C. Together they served in the California-San Francisco Mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They would spend a year as representatives of Brigham Young University at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. Subsequently they would spend a month a year for the next 10 years running the freshman English camp at Tsinghua.
As a matter of course, Dr. Sherman Day (Ed.D University of Georgia 1967) is remembered professionally as interim president University of North Georgia (being named 14th president ex post facto). He was interim president of Georgia State University (also serving as professor and Chairman of Counseling and Psychological Services Department, acting dean of admissions, acting athletic director, associate dean and dean of the College of Education). He also served as interim president at Bainbridge College and Gordon College. He served as inaugural director of the National Institute of Corrections and Assistant Director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons of the United State Justice Department. While working for ACOG, he was particularly delighted with his development of Centennial Olympic Park.
Sherman devoutly served in a variety of callings for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as a home teacher, Gospel Doctrine Teacher, Elders Quorum President, High Priest group leader, full-time missionary in Australia and San Francisco, Bishop, High Councilor, Atlanta Temple Sealer, and primary worker.
Sherm passed away Wednesday, March 20, 2024 at the age of 86. He is survived by his brother Gerald J. Day (LuAnn Smith), and sister Louann (Day) Greenwood (George Greenwood); his children Sandra Day, Brad Day (Dena Buytendorp), and Kristin (Day) Lester (Robert Lester); 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 24, 2024 at 3 p.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Dahlonega Ward, 7207 Dawsonville Highway, Dawsonville, GA 30534. Bishop Michael Mulberry will officiate. Interment will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Dahlonega.

Born June 5, 1937, she was the daughter of the late John Henry and Martha Chumley and was the last remaining child of 9. Eddie was the co-owner of Goswick’s Furniture and later the owner of Eddie’s Cozy Home Furniture in Dawsonville as well as the owner of a dried flower arrangement shop in Dahlonega known as Eddie’s Cozy Homes. She was a top seller for the Sarah Coventry Jewelry Company and also a top seller for the Tiara Glass Company. Her hobbies included decorating, flowers and was a gifted seamstress. Eddie was a member of the First Baptist Church of Dawsonville.
Her family would especially like to thank Barbara and John Wigington for being so kind and helpful in her later years.
Surviving are her sons, Scott Goswick, Gainesville, Steve Goswick, Gainesville, Tim Goswick, Dawsonville; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
The family will receive friends Friday from 5 until 7 at the funeral home.

Several nieces and nephews also survive.
