William P. Palmer - January 25, 1937 - April 21, 2024

Obituary Preview: William P. Palmer, 87, of Mount Solon, died Sunday (April 21, 2024) in Shenandoah Nursing and Rehab in Fishersville. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, neighbor and friend.
Born January 25, 1937 in Staunton, he was the son of Elmer Palmer and Ruby Monroe Palmer.
Bill was a Boy Scout as a youngster, and attended Lee High School. He completed his education while serving in the U. S. Air Force from 1956 – 1961, and eventually went on to work at the Navy Information Operation Command (NIOC) in Sugar Grove, W.Va. where he was proud to support communications research and development that was conducted for the Department of Defense. He retired in 2001.
He was a charter member of Calvary Baptist Church and Christian Fellowship Baptist Church. He served both church communities as a Sunday school teacher and deacon. He was a devoted youth leader and sports coach.
While in the Air Force, Bill learned to cook, and he continued to enjoy cooking for large groups of people, whether it was for a church breakfast or his famous Christmas Eve parties for family and friends. He also was a talented trouble-shooter for all things mechanical, electronic, and situational.
He played softball for various local leagues, including American Safety Razor, the City of Staunton and Middlebrook. Bill was a lifelong fan of Bluegrass and Country Music. He was always the life of the party, and quite a jokester.
Bill and his wife Roberta enjoyed camping with family and friends, and they loved to travel. They visited 46 States and 2 foreign countries together.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 57 years, Roberta M. Palmer; and his two sisters, Frances Ann Knight and Ruth Ellen Maxwell.
Surviving are his daughter, Carlene Palmer Cearley and husband Greg of Cary, N.C.; two grandchildren, Chandler Cearley of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Caroline Cearley of Evanston, Ill.; brother-in-law Don Maxwell of Winchester; nieces Kim Maxwell and Donna Maxwell, both of Winchester; nephews Danny Maxwell of Stephens City and Doug Maxwell of Winchester; a special cousin, Diane Huffer of Swoope.
A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. on May 11 at Calvary Baptist Church, Staunton, officiated by Pastor Bobby Campbell. Burial will follow in Oak Lawn Memory Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Jon Cromer, Bryan Plemmons, Tony Heflin, Robert Gilbert, and Doug Maxwell. Honorary pallbearers will be Rev. George Yoder, Russ Nuckoles, Milton Grady, Bill Henry, Dave Cash, George Howdyshell, Joe Wright and Jim Miller.
The family will receive friends at the church before the service, beginning at 9:30.

Bill’s family is grateful for the kindness and support of Robin Gilbert and Pastor Bobby Campbell that helped sustain them through the past four, very challenging months.

Jeannie was born in Rockbridge County on December 12, 1959, and was the daughter of the late Charles McKinley and Annie Lee (Campbell) Hostetter. She was employed as a nurse by Massachusetts General Hospital prior to retirement.
Jeannie was preceded in death by her brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth Lee and Teresa Dale Hostetter. She is survived by one niece, Blanche Elizabeth Hostetter; two great-nieces, Kenlee and Kennedy Rawley; and life-long friends Sheila Shiflett, Anna Hinkle and Carolyn Mawyer.

Obituary Preview: SWOOPE – Elizabeth “Betty” Bailey Shuey, 77, of Swoope, passed away Thursday, April 11, 2024.
Betty was born May 8, 1946 in Swoope, and was the daughter of the late Phillip Samuel and Elizabeth Hannah (Hahn) Bailey. She graduated from Buffalo Gap High School in 1964. She earned certification as an operating room technician and was employed in that capacity by Western State Hospital until an accident forced her untimely retirement. Her favorite pastimes included sewing, crocheting, and playing cards. Betty was a member of Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church.
On April 24, 1971 she married James William Shuey, who preceded her in death on September 21, 1998.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers, William Eric “Billy” Bailey and Phillip Samuel “Sam” Bailey II. Surviving are her daughter, Catherine McNeal and husband Jeremy of Swoope; three grandchildren, James McNeal (Brenna Kent) of Fishersville, Hannah McNeal Turazzo (husband Joe) of Richmond, and Taylor McNeal (fiancé Collin Lendermon) of Raleigh, N.C.; and a niece, Cynthia Fitzgerald of Staunton.
A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 14 in Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church Cemetery, officiated by the Rev. Lester Kennedy. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall of Mt. Tabor Church.

STAUNTON – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Brenda Joyce (Snead) Downs, 78, of Staunton. On April 8, 2024 she made her journey home to the promised land to be with the Lord Jesus Christ.
She was born on August 24, 1945 in Craigsville and was a daughter of the late Charles “C.S.” Snead Jr. and Helen L. (Clark) Snead.
Brenda worked for many years as a dispatcher for the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office and the Staunton Police Department, and then as a correctional officer for the Augusta Correctional Center. After retirement she continued to work as a realtor throughout Staunton, Waynesboro and Augusta County. She received great satisfaction in helping many families and first-time home buyers realize the American dream of owning their own homes in which to raise their families.
Her enthusiasm for live auctions and for the excitement of the bidding process led her to obtain her license, and she became the first female auctioneer in the region. She enjoyed participating in sales with numerous local auctioneers.
She was preceded in death by her oldest son, Keith D. Downs, with whom she is now in heaven, and a brother, Edward H. “Eddie” Meeks. She is survived by two children, K. Scott Downs and wife Annette of Chester, and Rita Kay Dietz of Fishersville; sisters Linda Armstrong and Kitty Welcher of Staunton; grandchildren Timothy C. Downs and wife Christine of Lovettsville, Anthony Carpenter and wife Stephanie of Amelia Courthouse, Christina Carpenter of Chester, Justin Downs and wife Abby of Staunton, Mitchell Pritt and his beloved Kara Robertson of Crimora; great-grandchildren Jaytin R. Smith of Chester, Elijah D. Downs and Pauline Downs of Lovettsville, and one more on the way; and a beloved close family friend, Chuck Almond whom she loved as a son, and his wife Lynn of Leesburg, Fla.

Patsy graduated from Buffalo Gap High School and attended Dominion Business School. She was happily employed as an operator for Cadence Blades in Staunton for 15 years. Patsy was a member of Jerusalem Chapel United Brethren in Christ Church and was an avid reader.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her grandparents, Herbert and Hazel Griffin and niece, Tasha Griffin. Surviving are her husband of 43 years, Henry “Alvin” Cook of Churchville; a son, Michael Wayne Cook of Churchville; a stepson, James Henry Cook and wife Kristen of Staunton; two brothers, Harold Griffin and wife Bonnie of Churchville, and Harry Griffin and wife Susie of Swoope; two step-grandchildren, Layla and Oliver Cook; and nieces and nephews.

Ark was born in New York City on October 18, 1945, and was a son of the late Wing Leo and Maloney Kathleen Leo.
He was a dedicated transport driver for patients at Western State Hospital and Wilson Workforce and Rehabilitation Center for many years prior to retirement.
Ark is survived by his wife of 43 years and the love of his life, Doris Lillian (McFarland) Leo; two stepchildren, Angela Lawson (Jerry) of Elkton and James Rogers of Shenandoah; a brother, Hank Leo (Crystal) of Fishersville; one nephew, Steven Leo of Fishersville; three grandchildren, Dascha Whitmore of Hinton, Elizabeth Guillen (Luis) of Winchester, and Hannah Shifflett (Ethan) of Roanoke; one great-grandson, Caleb Whitmore; and his faithful dog, Rosie.
The family is grateful for the attentive care of granddaughter Dascha Whitmore, grandson Caleb Whitmore, and neighbor Darrell Argenbright Sr. that enabled Ark to enjoy his final years in his own home.
A graveside service will be held 10 a.m. Friday, April 5 in Union Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Churchville, officiated by Father Matthias Lusembo.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. Thursday in Bear Funeral Home.

Obituary Preview: SWOOPE – Kathy Sue (Wagner) Christian, 59, widow of John B. Christian, IV, passed away Sunday (March 24, 2024) in Augusta Health.
Born February 2, 1965 in Staunton, she was the daughter of Ida Sue (Harris) Wagner of Staunton and the late Elwood Hansford Wagner. Kathy was a graduate of Buffalo Gap High School and received a bachelor’s degree in business from Mary Baldwin College. She was a member of Bethlehem Community Church.
Kathy had a life-long affinity for raising sheep that began when she received a lamb as a gift from her father when she was two years old. She paid her way through college with her registered Suffolk stock and continued to nurture a flock through the rest of her life. She also managed the poultry operation at the Christian family farm and stayed involved in all the farm’s various enterprises. Kathy was an active board member of the Augusta County Fair and a loyal supporter of local 4-H groups. She enjoyed baking, sewing, and flower-gardening, and was especially fond of decorating her home for each and every season. Kathy was well-known for her involvement in craft shows and especially in antique shows.
She was preceded in death by her father; her husband, and a special aunt, Argie Knott.
She is survived by her mother; three children, Jonathan Scott Christian, John Brownlee “J.B.” Christian V, and Katie Rosabelle Christian, all of Swoope; two brothers, Wayne C. Wagner, and Phillip Wagner and his wife Jessica, all of Staunton; a brother-in-law, Robert B. Christian and his wife Dana of Swoope; a number of aunts and uncles including a special aunt, Jean Sparks of Stuarts Draft; many cousins; and a special friend, Denise Bennett.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 29 in Hebron Presbyterian Cemetery, officiated by Rev. David Boger. Pallbearers will be Scott Harris, Garrett Glendye, Doug Riley, Chris Miller, Ellen Shaver Shank, and Eric Stogdale.
A reception in the church fellowship hall will follow the service.

JoKay’s favorite joys included taking trips to Pigeon Forge, Tenn. and West Virginia, and spending time with her precious grandsons and great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Mae Dorsey and Helen Jomayne Gee; and two brothers, Benny Ray Dorsey and Billy Joe Dorsey. She is survived by her husband, Willie Merlin Bosserman, Jr., whom she married on November 19, 2001; a daughter, Kimberly Dawn Fix-Glover and husband Jeff E. Glover of Greenville; brother Jamie Dorsey and wife Darlene of Churchville; sister Patsy Osborne and husband Jimmy of Indore, W.Va.; brother-in-law Jimmy Gee and wife Neila of West Augusta; grandsons Cody E. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Judy Ann Griffin; and his son-in-law, B. J. Morris. Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Teresa “Terri” (Peters) Griffin; two children, Jeremy Griffin (Sandy) of Waynesboro, and Michele Morris of Verona; a sister, Janet Miller, of Harrisonburg; three brothers, James W. Born December 16, 1928 in Roanoke she was a daughter of the late Rufus Morgan Parrott and Gladys Marguerite (Meek) Parrott.
Jean retired from Chesterfield County, after a career of teaching kindergarten and seventh-grade English. She was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church and also attended Jerusalem Chapel United Brethren in Christ Church.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Edward Lee Davis, Jr.; her second husband, William Michaux Sydnor; a son, Scott Payne Davis; a son-in-law, Douglas Edward DeLoach; and a granddaughter, Jennifer Jean (Pohlig) Slinker. Surviving are five children, Edward Lee Davis III of West Augusta, Katherine Davis Pohlig (husband David) of Draper, Va., Sarah Marguerite Davis of Powhatan, Va., Daniel Glenn Davis (wife Mae) of Blackstone, Va., and Laura Davis DeLoach of West Augusta; daughter-in-law Susan Hamby Davis of Midlothian; 12 grandchildren, Jennifer Moore Tate, Barbara Jean Davis, Daniel Glenn Davis, Jr., Xylina Susan Waugh, Jeannie Waugh Richards, Emily Katherine Pohlig, Emil Scott Pohlig, Miriam Pohlig Call, Bonnie Pohlig Roberts, James Edward Davis, Andrew Scott Davis, and Brandon Keith Davis; and 18 great-grandchildren.
A service to honor Jean’s life is anticipated in April, and will be announced at a later date.

Born September 12, 1936 in Goshen, he was a son of the late Burlin Jackson and Hilda (Bowles) Jackson Miller.
Marvin began working at the young age of eleven, and was a long-time employee of Jim Gum Logging where he had a reputation as a hard worker and an excellent truck driver. He truly loved his work, and also enjoyed gardening, He had an enthusiasm for hunting in his younger years, and enjoyed watching westerns in his later years.
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Nettie Louise (Warren) Jackson; a son-in-law, Doug Campbell; a brother, Harry Jackson; a sister, Dorothy Stuples; a half-brother, Sam Miller; and three half-sisters, Joyce Miller, Wilma Miller and Shirley Miller.
He is survived by two daughters, Diane Campbell of Roanoke and Glenda Oscar (John Thornton) of Greenville; a half-brother, James Miller of Goshen; two granddaughters, Cassie Oscar and Allison Oscar (Mickey Sheets); one great-granddaughter, Willow Sheets; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A private graveside service will be held in Oak Lawn Memory Gardens.
The family is grateful to John Thornton for opening his home to Marvin and providing care and support as his health declined.

Surviving are his mother, Anna Elizabeth (Cotton) Epperson of West Augusta; his father, Walter Anthony Epperson of Las Vegas, Nev.; two children, Trevyr Epperson and Heaven Epperson, both of Marion N.C.; a sister, Crystal Hartley of Staunton; a stepsister, Bridget Burnette of Marion; a stepbrother, Henry Burnette Jr. of Marion; and his maternal grandparents, Melvin and Julia Cotton of West Augusta.

Born April 25, 1947 in Charlottesville, he was the son of Charles Gordon Allen and Nell Virginia (Dudley) Allen.
Charlie was a 1965 graduate of Buffalo Gap High School. He earned his undergraduate degree from Virginia Tech, his Master’s from the University of Tennessee, and his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Virgnia Tech. Following his graduation, Charlie joined the Central Intelligence Agency in 1976, and worked in the CIA’s Directorate of Science and Technology in numerous positions utilizing his electrical engineering expertise, primarily in the field of radio communications. Charlie retired in March, 2016, after a long and distinguished career.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents. Surviving family members include his wife, Ellen Lotts Allen; two sons, John Gordon Allen (Cynthia) of Falls Church and Scott Edward Allen (Cecilia) of Manassas; a stepson, Charlie Clouse of Bridgewater; a brother, James H. Allen of Churchville; and grandchildren, William, Brendan, Carlos, Lucy, and David. He is also survived by a niece, Elizabeth (Sean) Lynch; nephews, Matt Lotts, Andy Allen (Emily) and Charlie Allen (Veronica); two great-nieces, Madeline and Natalie; a first cousin, Mattie Jo Coll; and a special friend, Robin Tanner-Sharp.

Jim was born March 18, 1947 in Staunton and was a son of Frank Willard and Emmaline (Howdyshell) Corbett. He was a 1965 graduate of Buffalo Gap High School. Prior to retirement, he was employed by Daikin. He was a member of Victory Worship Center. Jim was an avid outdoorsman and a genuine people-person.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sandra Kaye (Via) Corbett. Solon; four grandchildren, Jeremiah, Isabelle, Carson and Eli Corbett; three step grandchildren, Samantha Lilly, Amanda Mitchell and Brian Shifflett II; and five step great-grandchildren, Noah, Hayes, Mia, Joseph and Madison.

Jackie was born in Staunton on April 14, 1954, the daughter of Robert Cary Ambler, Jr. and Helen Louise (Beam) Ambler. She graduated from Prince George High School and John Tyler Community College, and attended Pan American Business College.
She was employed by John Tyler Alcohol Safety Action Program (ASAP) for 46 years, retiring in 2022 as Financial Officer.
Jackie enjoyed gardening of all sorts, and was skilled in a variety of needlepoint applications. She especially loved decorating at Christmastime, and was known, along with her mother, for her remarkable display of Christmas miniatures. Jackie was a devoted friend to many, and her friends genuinely became part of her extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents. Surviving are her brother, Robert Cary Ambler III and wife Linda of Christiansburg; nieces Jillian Ambler of Waynesboro and Rachel Ambler of Christiansburg; nephew Robert Cary Ambler IV of Staunton; a number of aunts, uncles and cousins; and dear friends Liz Wilkinson of Chester, Charles Dabney of Chester, Chad Beck of Chester and (cousin) Gay Beam Briggs of Amelia.
The family is especially grateful to Jackie’s former coworkers who supported her so well as she transitioned into retirement.

Doris, or “Jeanne” as she preferred to be called, was born on April 2, 1953 to Mac and Libby Campbell, and she was preceded in death by her parents, as well as her sister Nealie Harris and brothers Mack Campbell the 2nd and Mac S. Campbell.
Jeanne was a kind-hearted person who was always easy to talk to. She had a warm and inviting personality that made people feel comfortable in her presence. She had a deep love for her children and grandchildren, and she adored her little dog, Luke. Jeanne was also known for her excellent cooking skills and was often praised for her delicious meals.
In her earlier years, Jeanne attended Rockbridge High School. She went on to become a homemaker and later owned a restaurant. Throughout her life, she dedicated herself to caring for others and was a compassionate caregiver to many.
Jeanne had a variety of hobbies that brought her joy and fulfillment. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, tending to her chickens, and reading. She was an avid crossword worker and loved challenging her mind with puzzles.
Jeanne is survived by her husband Roger Ryder of Craigsville; children Kevin L. Bates (wife Shelby) of West Augusta; Kristy Knight (husband Marvin) of Churchville; Stafford “Spanky” Bates (wife Amy) of Goshen; Stephen Witt of Staunton; Stephanie Howard (Corey) of Waynesboro; a special "son," Shannon Harris (wife Lynn) of Churchville; sister Melissa Black of Craigsville; grandchildren Landon, Hunter, Sierra, and Joseph Bates, Jacob and Emma Witt, Hailey Duncan, Alayah Howard, Brady Bates, Kelli Harvey, and Ashley Lam who served as her caregiver; great-grandchildren Devin Atkins, Ava Harvey, "Baby" Logan and Hailey Lam and Jaydn Bates; special nurse Robin Hamilton; and friend Betty Whitlock.
Jeanne will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched with her kindness and loving nature. May she rest in peace.

She was a long-time active member and Sunday school teacher at Parkway Wesleyan Church.
Linda’s love for her Savior shaped everything she did, whether supporting her grandchildren, serving her church family, cooking, camping or traveling. She was a great listener and was genuinely devoted to the joy of those around her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Douglas MacArthur Windsor; and her son, Douglas Allan Windsor.
Surviving are her daughter, Amy Windsor Snead (husband Michael) of Waynesboro; daughter-in-law Shelly Mae Windsor of Erwin, Tenn.; brothers Terry Campbell (Josephine) of Churchville and Robert Campbell (Miriam) of Greenville; grandchildren Dakota Garrett Windsor (Jessica), Tayler Crum (Jason), Mackenzie Eavey (James), Ty Michael Snead, and Ayden Windsor Snead; great-grandchildren Mackson and Miller Crum, Hadleigh and Hudson Eavey, and Mason, Parker, Reagan and Khloe Windsor; and many nieces, nephews and cousins whom she loved dearly.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Evan Elmer Brenneman; and by brothers Paul, Henry and Dan Miller.
Surviving are her five children, Judith Brenneman of New Carrollton, Md., Leland Brenneman (wife Tanya) of Stuarts Draft, Violet Layman (husband Dennis) of Stuarts Draft, Byron Brenneman (wife Karen) of Tulsa, Okla., and Ron Evan Brenneman of Stuarts Draft; a foster son, Rick Hoover (wife Brenda) of Moline, Ill.; a sister, Martha Shawver of Wichita, Kans.; two brothers, Levi Miller of Springfield, Oh. and Edwin Miller of Kalona, Ia.; 13 grandchildren, three foster grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Born June 20, 1939, he was the son of Clara Conlon Goings and Horace Joseph Goings of Watertown, New York.
Michael previously lived in York, Pa. for 30 years. In 1982 he settled in the Shenandoah Valley, where he remained for over 40 years as it offered what he loved the most - the beauty of nature. This was his passion in life - to take hikes in the mountains with friends and family. He was active in the local chapter of the Appalachian Trail Club where he met his best friend and wife, Suzanne.
Mike worked in a variety of occupations. A charismatic salesman, he earned the title “Salesman of the Year” in 1975 and 1976 for the Murry’s Steak Company. Later, working for F & E Check Writer, he sold equipment to banks and businesses throughout the tri-state area, enjoying the drives along the way through the Shenandoah Valley and Blue Ridge Mountains.
In the late ‘80s, Mike was the original owner of Brian’s Card Shop in Harrisonburg, Va.
A man of many talents, Mike built his own log home in Keezletown and then a second log home in Churchville. He loved working with his hands and in addition to wood working, he enjoyed making pottery and playing the dulcimer.
Michael is survived by his wife of 27 years, Suzanne, his son, Brian Goings (wife Jenny) of Clinton, N.J., two grandsons, Eli Goings (wife Karlina) of Glasgow, Scotland, and Benjamin Goings. He also leaves two sisters, Patricia Freed and Sharon Goings; a half-brother, David Heltzel; two half-sisters, Maureen Hartman and Kathy LeCompte; a dear cousin Laurie O’Donnell (husband Jim); and brother-in-law Brian Carpenter of Gloucester, Va.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday, January 4 at the residence, 197 Lime Kiln Rd., Churchville.
