Obituary Preview: Patricia Ann Boone Lowery, 73, of Nebo, North Carolina, passed away on Monday morning, June 28, 2021 at Mission Hospital- McDowell.
A native of McDowell County, Patricia was born January 02, 1948 to the late Jack Alford Boone and Elenor Swann Boone.
Patricia found great joy in family gatherings, with a house full of laughter and a heart full of love. She was known to all who loved her as “Granny.” She lived in a world where it was never just family or friends- everyone was family, and everyone was a friend.
In addition to her parents, Patricia is preceded in death by her sister, Kathy Clark.
Those left to cherish her memories are her husband, Donald Lee Lowery; two children, Kim Hall and husband Richard of Nebo and Michael Lowery and wife Andrea of Cornelia, Georgia; and six grandchildren, Heather Hall, Katie Wilkerson, Taylor Lowery, M.J. Lowery, Jackson Lowery, Caroline Hall.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 30, 2021 at Beam Funeral Service & Crematory in Marion from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. A graveside service will follow at McDowell Memorial Park at 3:30 p.m. with Reverend Dean Owenby officiating.
Those serving as pallbearers will be Richard Hall, Michael Lowery, M.J. Lowery, Amberse Barlowe, Jimmy Steffen, and Alex McCormick.
Flowers are accepted and appreciated; however, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Maggie was born in Pocahontas, Tennessee on April 06, 1931 to the late Lee Jackson Roland and Ludie Louise Richardson Roland.
Mrs. DePoyster was the perfect example of a Christian lady. She was a member of the Southaven Church of Christ, where she enjoyed working in whatever roles she was needed in. She was known to always be in prayer for others. Maggie loved the Lord, her family, and her church family. Her grandchildren were her world. She was a loving and caring caregiver for all who were in her life.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Dewey Lee DePoyster; and her brother, Culbreth Jackson Roland.
She leaves behind her son, Terry DePoyster and wife Vickie; two grandchildren, Blake DePoyster and wife Megan and Bradley Wayne Styles and wife Kathy; and four great grandchildren, Carter DePoyster and Cain, Emily, and Abigail Styles.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 30, 2021 from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Beam Funeral Service in Marion, North Carolina.

Obituary Preview: On the morning of Saturday, June 26, 2021, Mary Elizabeth Morgan Elliott, age 81, of the Glenwood Community, departed to be with the Lord at Autumn Care of Marion.  Her loving family was by her side.  Born in McDowell County, North Carolina on November 06, 1939, to the late George and Estelle Vaughn Morgan, she was also preceded in death by one brother, Julius Garland Morgan.
Having worked for 16 years at Old Fort Finishing Plant, Mary proudly took care of her mother for 17 years and raised five children.  She enjoyed working with her hands, sewing, crocheting and cooking.  Mary was an avid reader and enjoyed working puzzle books and watching quiz programs on TV.  She was known to have a big heart and enjoyed sending cards to her family, friends and church family, whether it be for a birthday, get well or holiday; and talking on the phone with them.  Mary absolutely loved the Lord, her husband, and her family.  She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Glenwood.
She is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Ted "Roger" Elliott; five children, Michael Keith Elliott, Lisa Kay Elliott Edwards (James), Roger “David” Elliott, Lori Dawn Elliott Cooper (Len) and Timothy “Tim” Patrick Elliott; nine grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

Obituary Preview: Mr. Wayne Davis, age 62, following a brief illness unexpectedly made that wonderful cross over into Heaven at 2:51 p.m. on Saturday, June 26, 2021 at Iredell Health System in Statesville, North Carolina.  Born in Thomasville, North Carolina on March 31, 1959, he was the son of the late Carol and Ruth Black Davis.
Following 44 years, Wayne retired from Baxter HealthCare and was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He had a passion for water skiing and enjoyed taking his family and friends out on Lake James in his 1988 Ski Nautique Boat, which other than his family, he adored. Wayne was attending Sugar Hill Baptist Church.
Left to cherish all the loving and amazing memories are his wife of 27 years, Donna Pittman Davis; one daughter, Laura Davis Pittman (Jeff); two grandchildren, Brantley Wayne Pittman and Everleigh Pittman; one brother, Phillip Davis (Kay); one sister, Vicki Biggerstaff (Mike); and two nieces, Dr. Melody Wrench (Ben) and Katie Davis.  Wayne is also survived by his life long friends, Jeff Rumfelt and Bo Loftis; and numerous other friends he had met along his journey.

She was born in Yancey County on May 20, 1934 to the late Mack Austin and Ellen McPeters Austin. She is also preceded in death by 15 siblings.
Lillie was a hard worker who would always help anyone in need. She loved planting and working in her garden. Known to have a great sense of humor, she also loved a good yard sale. The matriarch of the family, she enjoyed taking care of them and others. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed baking as well. If you went to her house, you knew you would be eating. An awesome mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Lillie loved her family immensely.
Those left to cherish her precious memories are her children, Juanita Guffie (Lonnie) and Randy Wilson; five grandchildren, Athena Fleming (Paul), Christy Wilson, Billy Surrett (Heather), Charity Meadows (Jesse), and Chad Reece (Shelby); nine great grandchildren, Brandon Fleming, Magan Shelton, Dalton Shelton (Taylor), Makayla Surrett Guffie, Phoenix Kuykendall, Josiah Kuykendall, Devon Edwards, Pierson Reece, and Liam Reece; five great-great grandchildren, Savon, Avion, Luke, Nadia, and Addie; and three sisters, Lois Wisenbarger, Lib Manning, and Gelene Sharp.

Pam loved and faithfully served the Lord.  She adored her family, especially her husband of 47 years, her children and three grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Sherril Byrd; and her precious mother-in-law, Tola Bolles.
Left to cherish Pam’s precious memory are her husband, Samuel Britton Snyder; two daughters, Vanessa Snyder and Dr. Telena Woody (Paul); and three beautiful grandchildren, Britton Fisher, Chloe Monosso and Sophia Monosso.
A private memorial service will be held by the immediate family to honor her memory.  As Pam would often sing, “There ain’t no grave gonna hold my body down”.

An avid coffee drinker, Ricco enjoyed watching The Golden Girls, Pittsburg Steelers playing, and listening to a variety of music.  Most of all, he loved spending quality time with his “grandbabies”.
He is survived by two sons, Robert Boykin and his wife, Theresa and Benjamin Boykin, Sr. and his wife, Ashley; and seven grandchildren, RJ Boykin, Kayla Boykin, Daphne Boykin, AJ Boykin, Winnie Boykin, Bennie Boykin and DJ Boykin.  Ricco is also survived by special friends who were there during his journey, Arvin Hicks, Tina Boykin, Brenda Hicks, Greg Parker, Mandi Parker, Gail Wilson and Sherry and Tim Deel.
A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

Lee loved the Lord. He adored his family, especially his wife of 64 years and his grandchildren. His favorite past times were to garden, fish and just be busy. He was a proud veteran of the US Navy. He also worked in Maintenance at Marion Manufacturing for over 30 years.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Jackie Pendley and a brother, Frank Pendley.

A proud mother and grandmother, Virginia is survived by her two sons, Bobby Rowland and Terry Rowland; three wonderful grandchildren; and six precious great grandchildren.

Obituary Preview: In the early morning hours of Sunday, June 20, 2021, Mr. Roger Hoover, age 74, of the Buck Creek Community passed away at his residence.  A native of Yancey County, North Carolina, he was born on Christmas Eve (December 24th) 1946 and was the son of the late Herman and Marjorie Robinson Hoover.
A member of Sunnyvale Baptist Church, Roger enjoyed working with wood, especially carving.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Barbara T. Hoover; one daughter, Karen Hoover House (George), Keith Hoover (Joyce Brooks), Jeremy Hoover and Johnny Reed; two sisters, Janice Blalock and Cynthia Hoover; seven grandchildren; four great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends he met along his journey.
A celebration of Roger’s life will be held at Sunnyvale Baptist Church at a later date.
The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to Mr. Hunter Slagle and members of the McDowell County EMS for their immediate response and medical attention they provided Mr. Hoover and the assistance they provided the family.

Following 38 years serving as a nurse’s assistant, Hazel absolutely loved helping others.  She enjoyed growing flowers, traveling to different flea markets, spending quality time with family and friends. Cooking a big meal for her family meant the world to Hazel.
Left to cherish her precious memories are daughter, Mary Banks (Steve), whom she made her home with; two sons, Rick Banks (Karen) of Asheville and Gene Banks of Hendersonville; five grandchildren that she adored, John Corman (Renee), Crissy Sowers (Jonathan), Tiffany Robinson (Matt), Ronnie Lee and Ricky Banks; many great grandchildren that she enjoyed spending time with, Hailey, Anna, Melody, Isaiah, Elisha, Destiny, Kaitlyn, Jordan, Darren, Maliah, Mason, Myles, Mahika, Chloe, Bridgette and Avacyn; and two special Angels in Heaven, Kyle Lee and Billy Wright.  She is also survived by one brother, Wayne Bartlett (Paula) of Indiana; and several nieces and nephews.
A gathering of family and friends will be held on Tuesday, June 22, 2021 from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Beam Funeral Service & Crematory in Marion.  A graveside service will follow at Piney Grove Cemetery in Old Fort with Mr. Matthew Robinson officiating.

Lawrence was a Christian and he worked as a general surgeon at McDowell Hospital in Marion, North Carolina. He enjoyed playing the guitar, traveling, watching UK Basketball and movies, speaking the Russian language, taking care of his patients and spending time with his family.
Lawrence is survived by his wife of 9 years, Danielle Hord Manship; one son, Clay Lightner of Marion, North Carolina; and one daughter, Lauren Manship of Marion, North Carolina. He also leaves many other family members and friends who will sadly miss him.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 25, 2021, at Tollesboro Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Tollesboro, Kentucky, with Brother Phil Cropper officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Tabor Cemetery in Lewis County, Kentucky.

Gurthie Hunter - April 13, 1927 - June 18, 2021

Obituary Preview: Gurthie Morgan Hunter, 94, of Marion, North Carolina, went to be with her Lord and Savior Friday, June 18, 2021 at Fair Haven Home in Bostic.
Gurthie was born April 13, 1927 and grew up in Glenwood. She started working in the hosiery mill before her and her husband, Roy, started Hunter’s Livermush in 1955. She worked there until she turned 70 years old. Even then, she still wanted to be the boss and gave her input and knowledge to her children to run the business.
Her whole life was her four children, Hunter’s Livermush, and God. She always talked about God and making it to Heaven. The Bible says you are rewarded with years if you love and worship God. For her to make it to 94 tells it all. She often said age is just a number and that she didn’t feel 94. She also said she never thought she’d live this long.
A few weeks before her passing, she said she understood why you have to die. The world changes so that its not your world, and you are lost, so you might as well go Home.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Roy Hunter (2008); her son, Jerry Lee Hunter (2019); a son-in-law, John Johnson (2012); and four sisters and one brother.
Survivors include her three daughters, Carolyn Hunter Johnson, Louise Hunter Rumfelt (Ray), and Phyllis Hunter Brackett (Michael); a daughter-in-law, Carolyn Worley Hunter; seven grandchildren, Nicole Neubauer (DJ), Elizabeth Brooks (Paul), Rebecca Edwards (Eugene), Anthony Corn (Jessica), Jonathan Corn (Amber), Christopher Harmon (Breanna), and Patrick Harmon; nine great grandchildren, Nicholas and Audrey Neubauer, Brittany, Kendell and Kerri Brooks, Kamie Hendley (Alex), Kirstan Edwards, Kelly Fay (Ashton), and Madison Corn; two great-great grandchildren, Jaysin and Jobe; and one brother, Gene Morgan, who faithfully visited her once a month, which she so looked forward to. She is also survived by special friends and caregivers, Vicki DePoyster and Tawnya Kagan who loved and cared for her for the past two years.

In addition to his father, he is preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Paul Proctor.
Greg was a 1984 McDowell High School graduate. He graduated with a cosmetology degree from McDowell Technical Community College in 1987. He enjoyed planting flowers and was known for his kind heart. But most of all Greg loved spending time with his family and friends.
Along with his mother Betty, Greg is survived by his siblings, Kim Owensby Proctor, Tim Holtzclaw (Karen) and Keith Holtsclaw (Karen); four nieces and two nephews, Jennifer Draper Dowdle (Clay), Brennan Proctor, Morgan Proctor, Kristen Holtzclaw, Kayla Wilson (Kerney) and Carson Holtsclaw. Also surviving Greg are his great nieces and nephews, Grayson, Addley and Brooks Dowdle and a number of aunts, uncles and cousins.

A native of McDowell County, he was born January 06, 1939 to the late Orvill and Addie Davis Owens.
Having retired from Rockwell, Eual worked as a welder for most of his life. Music was his life, and he was well known in the community for his musical talents. He was also a very talented artist. A great husband, father, and grandfather, Eual was loved by all.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a brother, Buddy Owens; and a step-son, Brandon Lowe.
Survivors include his wife, Day Owens; two children, Ray Owens (Christy) and Scott Owens (Michelle); step-daughter, Chantal Campbell (Charles); and step-son, Ryan; six grandchildren, Shaina, Kaleb, Kinsey, Bethany, Cameron, and Aden "Mikey"; three step grandchildren, Alex, Courtney, and Chase; and three great grandchildren.
A gathering of family and friends will be held on Wednesday, June 23, 2021 from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. at Beam Funeral Service & Crematory in Marion. A celebration of Eual's life will be held at a later date.

Rosalie enjoyed tending to her flowers and searching for four leaf clovers. She also liked to visit Mountain Paradise. Rosalie always helped anybody who needed it. She truly loved everyone, and they loved her back. Above all, she loved all her grandchildren, especially her great granddaughter.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a son, Bo Ollis; granddaughter, Sydney Nanney; and a sister, Carolyn Walters.
Those left to cherish her memories are her husband, Lake Lure Ollis; daughter, Gwen Nanney (Gerald); three grandchildren, Josie Nanney, Lindsey Nanney, and Cayden Nanney; a great granddaughter, Sydara Nanney; and four siblings, Gail McKinney, Jane Turbyfill (Roger), Terri McKinney, and Rick McKinney.

Jeff enjoyed listening to rock music, reading and watching movies. He was a loving father, brother and grandfather. Jeff mostly enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
Left to cherish his memories are his daughter, Keyla Rayn Teaster, one step-daughter, Ashley Pritchard and four siblings, Todd Teaster (Crissy), Olen McKinney (Desiree), Jason Teaster (Jennifer) and Crystal Page (Matthew). Also surviving Jeff are his step-grandchildren, Eli Miller and Maverick Pritchard.

He was born in Rutherford County on October 12, 1941 to Clover Elliott McDaniel and the late Grady Clarence McDaniel.
Eugene was a faithful member of Zion Hill Baptist Church, where he served as the sound director for over 50 years as well as in many other capacities in the church. Known as a hard-working man, he was an avid gardener who enjoyed the outdoors. He had a special passion for hunting, fishing, beekeeping, and working in his yard. Most of all, he loved his Lord and spending time with family. Eugene was greatly loved and will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
In addition to his father, he is preceded in death by a brother, Dale McDaniel.
Those left to cherish his precious memories are his wife of 60 years, Della Mae Worley McDaniel; two children, Morris Russell McDaniel and Tina Eileen Nichols; five grandchildren, Brian McDaniel (Kaitlyn Hively), Brent Nichols (Kaitlyn), Katelyn McDaniel, Courtney McDaniel, and Blake Nichols (Makayla Stevens); and two siblings, Reid McDaniel (Esther) and Beatrice Bright (Johnny).

Obituary Preview: In the early morning hours of Monday, June 14, 2021, Neil Tyson Laney, 74, of Durham, North Carolina and formerly of Marion, passed away at his residence.
He was born December 01, 1946, to the late Loren Molly Laney and Wilma Ashe Laney. While born in Maryville, Tennessee, he grew up on the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina, a place he dearly loved and returned to often.
Tyson lived a full life with many passions. After serving in the U.S. Navy during Vietnam, he spent 30 years as a North Carolina Wildlife Officer, a job that excited him each day until he retired as a Major of Field Operations, including having served as the training director for Wildlife Enforcement at the UNC School of Government.
But Tyson’s biggest passion was music, especially bluegrass. Armed with his Martin six-string and deep voice, Tyson fingerpicked and sung his cherished music to all willing to listen and many did. Audiences loved his bluegrass covers and original songs filled with hilarious but deceptively educational stories from his days as a wildlife officer and conservationist. Tyson was never far from his guitar and used it often to make everyone’s day brighter.
Those left to cherish his memories and music are his loving wife, Ruth Wiseman Laney; his sisters, Phyllis Connell and Denise Beam (Dennis); six children, Christopher Laney of Greensboro, Walter Laney (Lindsay) of Greensboro, John Deaton of Liberty, Neil Laney of Burlington, Preston Laney (Jessica) of Burlington, and Hannah Branch (Jeff) of Durham; fourteen grandchildren, T.J. Landis, John Laney, Cort Laney, Chase Laney, Eyler Laney, Mila Laney, Austin Laney, Neil Laney, Jordan Laney, Lillie Deaton, Sammy Deaton, Waylon Deaton, Jaden Branch, and Emme Branch. Tyson greatly loved his wife, sisters, children, and grandchildren as well as his numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins and was extremely proud of them all. He also dearly loved his spiritual family at Liberty Baptist Church in Durham, NC.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 19, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at Pisgah United Methodist Church Cemetery in Linville Falls with Pastor Scott Gray officiating.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Harry Duncan; her son, Tommy Lawrence; and two brothers, Ray and Guy Lane.
Those left to cherish her memories are her daughter, Karen Lane; two grandchildren, Sarah Eldreth and Dillan Couch; two great grandchildren, Maleia Eldreth and Sawyer Couch; her sister, Peggy Sisk; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Gallery received his undergraduate degree from Belmont Abbey, in Belmont, North Carolina, where he was a member of the basketball team, and Phi Kappa Theta – NC Alpha Rho (alumni).  Mr. Gallery received his Law Degree from the Law School of University of South Carolina, in Columbia, South Carolina.  He was a member of the South Carolina Bar Association, and practiced Family Law in Columbia, South Carolina, until retiring in 2003.  He was the co-founder and operator of The Quiet Place, a retreat located in Bakersville, North Carolina, with his wife.  He was also President of The Quiet Place NC, Inc.

Mr. Gallery raced sailboats, out of Columbia Sailing Club, and continued his love of riding The Blue Ridge Parkway on his Harley, up until this year.  He was a man of many accomplishments, but if you asked him about himself, his first response would be that he was a man of God, in service to The Lord, and temporary custodian of The Quiet Place. He completed his earthly mission, and returned Home at 7:08 PM, Saturday, June 12, 2021.  He was at peace, and closer than ever to God.  He will be missed, by many, but his ministry work will live on, for many.  Fair sailing, good, and faithful servant.
