Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who need to know about the funeral or memorial service. They also offer an opportunity for families to share stories, memories, and achievements of their loved one.

Who writes an obituary?

In most cases, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. Funeral homes or obituary writers may also assist in crafting the obituary, especially if the family needs guidance or support.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), hobbies, interests, and surviving family members. You may also include a photo, quotes, or personal anecdotes to make it more personalized.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Online obituaries often have more flexibility in terms of length and content.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or multiple photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and help others remember your loved one.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed and personalized tribute that provides additional context and celebrates the person's life.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. You may need to provide the written obituary, along with any photos or other requested materials.

Can I publish an obituary online?

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?
