George Von Scheven - January 22, 1937 - December 04, 2020

Departed: 12/04/2020 (Stockton)
Obituary Preview: George von Scheven, 83, formerly of Philadelphia, PA, died December 4, 2020, in San Francisco, CA. His family was at his side.
Mr. von Scheven was born in 1937, in Frankfurt am Mein, Hessen, Germany. As a child during World War II, his family was separated to evade persecution for their opposition to Nazi policies and to avoid Allied bombing raids. His father, Walter von Scheven, was an art director at the American advertising firm McCann Erickson in Frankfurt, and became a well-known graphic artist. His mother, Elisabeth Charlotte von Scheven (nee Weidenreich), was imprisoned and later deported to Auschwitz. The family, including his mother, was reunited after the war and emigrated to New York City in 1946.
Mr. von Scheven graduated from the High School of Music & Art in New York City. He earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Antioch College and a Masters of Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design. In 1962, Mr. von Scheven moved to Philadelphia where he began his architectural career at Vincent Kling. From there, he worked at the City Planning Commission, for several Philadelphia architectural firms, and as a professor of architecture at Syracuse University. He spent much of his career, from 1977 to 1999, as an architect and designer at Ewing Cole Cherry Parsky, a Philadelphia architectural and engineering firm.
Reflecting on his life, Mr. von Scheven wrote that his father taught him to draw at a very young age. This skill sustained him through his career as an architect, even as the profession transitioned from pencil to computer. At the end of his life, despite Alzheimers, he remained comfortable with a pencil in his hand and continued to draw.
Like his father, Mr. von Scheven was an ardent lover of classical music, especially compositions by Bach and Beethoven. After he retired in 1999, he served on the board of the Germantown branch of the Settlement Music School in Philadelphia. He was an active member of the Settlement Music School community and gifted them with the design of a naturally lighted, contemporary building for the students and teachers of their Willow Grove branch.
Mr. von Scheven is remembered for his warm smile and genuine interest in people. His breadth of knowledge across such diverse subjects as history, science, music, and art made him an engaging conversationalist and connected him to those he met in his travels and at home. He was a tinkerer and a source of endless new ideas, even if a bit unconventional. To his daughters, he was a supportive and loving father who enjoyed spending time with his family.
Mr. von Schevens maternal grandfather was the noted anthropologist Franz Weidenreich, who spent many years in China and was instrumental in identifying and classifying the Peking man.
Mr. von Scheven is survived by his daughters Emily von Scheven (Mark Shostak) of San Francisco, and Anne von Scheven of Philadelphia; two grandchildren; two nieces; and a great niece. He is also survived by his former wife, Judith von Scheven, of Philadelphia. He was predeceased by his sister, Gisela Fort (nee von Scheven).

John Edwin Lind Jr. - February 26, 1935 - October 15, 2020

Departed: 10/15/2020 (Stockton)
Obituary Preview: John Edwin Lind, Jr. passed away at home October 15, 2020 in San Francisco, California at age 85. An only child, he was born February 26, 1935 in Louisville, Kentucky. Although he spent time in the New York area as a youngster, he and his family returned to Louisville where he finished high school. His father, John Edwin Lind, a mechanical engineer, and his mother, Minnie M. Young, both predeceased him. Music was always an important part of his life. John took up the violin at age twelve and later learned to play the recorder and the transverse baroque flute. He played violin in the symphony at Cornell, where he earned a BA in chemical engineering. Later in life, he was known as "Disco" John Lind. John was awarded a graduate fellowship to study Chemistry at Yale, where he earned his Ph.D. After his Yale postdoc, John returned to Cornell as an Assistant Professor of Chemistry. He joined the Stanford Chemical Engineering Department around 1965. After teaching at Stanford for more than a decade and having published more than twenty scientific papers, John was frustrated by US politics and decided to leave academia for social justice work. He had been the co-chair of Christians for Socialism in the Bay Area. He began the 35-year second phase of his professional life in San Francisco in 1979, joining the non-profit Northern California Interfaith Committee on Corporate Responsibility (CANICCOR), primarily funded by US churches. John followed the flow of investment capital from US banks to conflict zones across the globe so that CANICCOR could pressure them to divest. In the 1990s Johns focus shifted to advocating for domestic banking institutions to lend to qualified minority and low income borrowers. John developed expertise in banking and focused on South Africa. As CANICCORs Executive Director, he testified before the House of Representatives Banking Committee on rescheduling of South Africa's debt and on legislation to prevent US bank lending to South Africa. He continued running CANICCOR until his retirement at age 79. Since CANICCOR could not afford to pay its director much, John used the skills he learned in Chemical Engineering labs to make ends meet by doing plumbing and electrical work, which he also did as a volunteer for people in East Palo Alto who couldnt afford it and for the Black Panther Party. In the late 1980s John got rid of his car, which meant giving up day hikes. He turned to club dancing at discotheques for exercise and fun. He kept going out while the San Francisco club scene transformed around him; from disco and 80s clubs to the rave scene, John always found a way to enjoy himself up until COVID-19 closed the clubs, including his favorite, Somas Cat Club, as well as the Stud and Underground SF. He realized that he was often a curious sight for other dancers: "I dance in a walker … obviously this is a little bizarre." With his signature black Levi cutoffs, suspenders, and black compression stockings, "Disco" John is one of the dance floor denizens that make the San Francisco club scene iconic. He helped start a social club at Woods Cerveceria and was a regular at Liquid Gold, Swirl, Caf International, Angel Caf, and the former Caf Flore. John is survived by many, many friends and acquaintances, mainly much younger than he, to whom he has been an amazing inspiration. A Zoom celebration of life is planned December 13 at 3pm PST.
