Her thirst for knowledge and advocacy also saved lives for some of her family members. When her younger brother, Drew, died suddenly in 1977 of an aortic dissection, the family, his young wife, and their three small children were left with many “hows” and “whys”. Betsy made it her mission to answer these questions. Through extensive research, traveling to conferences, and joining advocacy groups, Betsy learned about the highly inheritable condition, Marfan Syndrome; a genetic connective tissue disorder that often leads to aortic aneurysms or severe cardiac weakening if not treated. She shared her knowledge and advocated for his children and grandchildren to be screened, which led to life saving aortic replacements and valve sparing surgeries so that they are able to enjoy all the joys that life brings.
Betsy was a member of the People’s Church in Kalamazoo, MI, the Red Hat Society, and many other advocacy and cultural organizations throughout her long life, and was a volunteer driver for Hope Network.

Pennie Lou Stevens - March 30, 1944 - April 10, 2024

Departed: 04/10/2024 (Battle Creek)
Obituary Preview: In Loving Memory of Pennie Stevens,
Beloved matriarch and cherished soul, she gracefully danced into the hearts of all she knew. Pennie passed away peacefully on April 10th, 2024, at the age of 80, in the home of her daughter, Kelli, surrounded by those she loved.
Pennie was born to Lyle and Phyllis Hoskins, on March 30th1944 where she spent her youth growing up on the family farm with her siblings (Rob, Jan, and Peg). She was a 1962 Climax-Scotts graduate. She was employed by Dr. Roelof’s DDS for 20+ years.
She was married to Jim Stevens in March of 1979. They enjoyed their love of racing and riding motorcycles, so much so-they were married at a motorcycle shop in Daytona during Bike Week. Pennie and Jim owned a construction company (Steven’s Builders) for many years where they would meet and became friends with many of their customers. After Jim’s passing in 2000, Pennie would continue on with her love of racing and classic cars. Ever so much that she purchased a true classic, a 1937 chevy pickup. She was so proud of her little copper truck. “The Lucky Pennie” she called it.
Pennie had many hobbies throughout life that she pursued passionately. Her joy for crocheting blankets was known by many, it was truly a craft that she put hours of love into. Amongst growing up on the farm, she loved to dance. Her love for dancing ignited joy wherever she twirled. Old time country music was her passion. During the later years in her life, she found tranquility in her seasonal campground located on Quincy’s chain of lakes. She spent her last 20+ summers there, meeting new people and sharing her love with everyone she encountered. From making new friends, to hosting family, she always made time for everyone to visit for holidays and weekends. Her home away from home was a gift for all.
Her greatest love however, was her family. Pennie loved each and every one of them with all her heart. She cherished this joy in life above all others. She was a gift giver, nothing ever too big or too small was ever too little or too much. With a loving heart, open ears and caring shoulder, Pennie was a loving home for all.
Pennie leaves behind a legacy of warmth, laughter, and boundless love. She is survived by daughter Kelli (Mike) Phillips, Brother Rob (Lynette) Hoskins, Sisters Jan Bolton and Peg (Mel) Matuschka. Grandchildren Steven Phillips, Brian(Jacklyn) Phillips, and Heather (Jeremy) Culver, as well as 5 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Proceed in death by her parents, brother-in-law Dave Bolton, first husband Wesley Hinton, second husband James Stevens, and special companion Leroy “Lucky” Waychoff. Arrangements by Baxter Funeral & Cremation Service (269) 788-9800 Baxterfuneral.com

Merle Elwin Kraft - December 14, 1928 - April 09, 2024

Departed: 04/09/2024 (Battle Creek)
Obituary Preview: Merle E. Kraft, 95, of Battle Creek, MI was welcomed into the splendor of heaven on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, at The Heritage assisted living center. He was born in Battle Creek, MI, on December 14, 1928, the son of George Kraft and Belva (Branch) Kraft.
Merle married the love of his life Margaret (Norsworthy) Kraft on June 1, 1946. They were high school sweethearts and lived most of their married life of 52 years in the Urbandale area. Merle served with the U.S. Naval Reserves for 6 years. He was simultaneously employed by the Kellogg Co. from 1945 to 1947, by Oliver from 1947 to 1949 and by Consumers Power Co. from 1949 until retiring 41 years later in 1990.
Merle and Margaret had three children Sallie, Steven and Gary Kraft that they built their life around. Merle was a devoted father and husband who coached little league and always relished family time and vacations across the country. Merle enjoyed bowling and golfing leagues in his younger years. He was a talented carpenter and skilled electrician who built several of the family homes. He was also a talented artist whose paintings of landscapes and places he visited were highly sought after by family and friends alike. Merle also loved to go on his annual fishing trips to Canada with dear friends, his son, and grandson.
Later in life, Merle was affectionately given the name, “Gigi”, after becoming a great-grandfather. He continued to be a proud, loving and supportive fan at all of the grandkids, and great grandkids sporting events, school functions and family gatherings just as he did as a father. After the death of his wife in 1999, Merle found companionship in a special friend, Tillie Porter, for over 20 years until her death. They enjoyed traveling and “going to the dances” at Country Fever in Bellevue. Their insistent determination to attend the dances to see friends gained Merle the nickname “the deer slayer” after repeated hit and runs on his late night drives home. His Buick still bears the scars. Throughout Merle’s later years his kind, gentle smile and bright blue twinkling eyes impacted everyone he came into contact with. Whether it was the girls at the bank, credit union or the donut shop everyone genuinely adored him. His genuine magnetism and charisma seemed to be what the family teased as “the Elvis effect.” Merle would laugh and roll his eyes in response to the mention of the phrase. The entire Kraft family is immensely grateful to the staff at The Heritage assisted living facility who loved, adored and watched over him over this last year as if he were their own “Gigi.”
Merle was preceded in death by his parents, George & Belva (Branch) Kraft; wife, Margaret Kraft; sisters, Dorothy J. Mainstone, Geraldine Kraft, Patricia Cornwell, Shirley Pancoft; son, Gary John Kraft; and special friend, Tillie Porter.
Merle is survived by his daughter, Sallie Kraft of Battle Creek; son, Steven (Marie) Kraft of Battle Creek; 4 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; sister, Sharon (Johnny) Burwick; and brother, James (Lynn) Kraft.
The family is holding visitation at the Baxter Funeral & Cremation Service on Saturday, April 20, 2024 from 11-1pm with funeral services to follow at 1pm. Interment will be at Bedford Cemetery.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Hospice or of one’s choice.
