Obituary Preview: We loved him; He loved us. He may be gone from our sight, But never from our hearts...
Born September 26, 1960, Melvin Cotton was the first of five children to the union of Ebbie Gene Cotton and Thelma Cotton. His father and a baby brother preceded him in death. Melvin was a friendly, rambunctious kid with a loving smile that coined him the nickname “Smiley” by the neighborhood kids. Melvin began his spiritual journey at Rising Star MB Church where he was baptized in the Mississippi River under the leadership of the late Reverend Andrew Lee Smith. Years later, God filled him with the Holy Ghost while in prayer with Pastor Joe Middleton.
Melvin attended University City School District and was a good student and member of the football team. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy in 1979. He served his country during peacetime traveling to the Philippine Islands, Japan, and Australia ports. He received an honorable discharge July 18, 1983. He earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering and enjoyed a 38-year successful career with McDonell Douglas/Boeing. Melvin was community minded and an inspiration to many. He helped younger employees navigate their careers at Boeing. Outside of work, Melvin was an inspiration and mentor to ‘little leaguers’ both on and off the court as their first coach in various sports. Melvin was also an avid biker who enjoyed bike trips with his motorcycle club “The King of Hearts.”
In 2003, Melvin met and fell in love with Alice Jackson; they married on October 8, 2005, and began their 16-year life journey. Together, they enjoyed traveling, sports, going to concerts and watching Sci Fi movie thrillers side by side! In March of 2021, Melvin was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Throughout his courageous battle with cancer, he was sustained by vigilant thoughts of love and prayers from his faithful wife, mother, family and friends. He fought a good fight, but sadly lost the battle early Wednesday morning, December 1, 2021.
Melvin leaves to cherish his loving memories: his devoted wife, Alice Cotton; daughter, Lacey Jackson; granddaughter, Zoe Jackson; loving mother, Thelma Cotton; two faithful brothers, Kevin Cotton (Patricia) and Darrell Cotton (Kinesha); a beloved sister, Cassandra Cotton; four cherished sisters-in law, Doris Middleton (Joe Louis), Carolyn Crenshaw, Norma Ogunmolawa, and Erma Jackson; and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, neighbors, and dear friends.

Mr. Robert Jacob Dunn - August 23, 1949 - November 21, 2013

Departed: 11/21/2013 (Florissant)
Obituary Preview: I was born Tuesday, August 23, 1949 at 43 Mc Henry St. in Kinloch, MO to the late Reverend Nathanial Leonard and Theotist Nadine (Pryor) Dunn, who preceded me in death. From that union of holy matrimony, I was born the eighth sibling of ten. I received my primary education at Holy Angels Catholic School in Kinloch, MO, my secondary education through the Kinloch Public School system, and my postsecondary education at Central Texas College in Killeen, TX.
During my high school days at Kinloch High School, I played football and was mentored by Coach James B. Griffin. He was my guiding light during my high school days. On August 13, 1969, I enlisted in the U.S. Army and was sent to Fort Leonard Wood for basic combat training. I was assigned to Company C Third Battalion Basic Combat Training Brigade. My formal military technical training was the rotary-wing aircraft known as the UH-1 Huey Helicopter in Ft. Rucker, Al. After two and half years of active duty, I was honorably discharged from the US Army in February of 1972.
For 6 months, I was roaming the streets headed nowhere. Due to high unemployment rates, I could not find a job, so I reenlisting in the military. I was sent to Ft. Lewis, WA then to Korea for a second tour. After three years, I decided to get out of the army again. I was honorably discharged in 1975 and was hired at Mc Donald Douglas Aircraft in St. Louis, MO. I worked there from 1975 until I was laid off in January of 1977. After looking for work for six months, nothing available, I reenlisted in the US army a third time. I became an automotive repairman for my next fourteen years of service. I repaired ground mobility equipment for the military, including but not limited to: cars, trucks generators, tanks, and engineering equipment.
During my military career, I earned numerous awards and declarations. I received two national defense service ribbons, five good conduct medal awards, army accommodation medals, army achievement medals, three army service ribbons, expert marksmanship m16 riffle, sharp shooter m14 riffle, air crewmen wings badge, and a South West Asia medal with two bronze stars for defense of Saudi Arabia and liberation of Kuwait.
After I retired December 31, 1991, I was employed by the United States Postal Service in the main office in Baltimore, MD. I worked there for more than fifteen years. My career was ended due to medical issues. I moved back to St. Louis circa 2008 to be with my family. One of the best moves I made since I enlisted in the army because family is important. I leave my beloved son, Robert Jacob Dunn II, who is my greatest accomplishment, my wife Toni Diane Dunn, my great-nephew, Taran Jacob Osifo, who will also carry the Jacob legacy, and host of family and friends. -Robert J. Dunn
