Gwendolyn Ilene Keefauver - February 10, 1932 - January 26, 2022

Departed: 01/26/2022 (Holyoke)
Obituary Preview: Gwen Keefauver of Palmdale, California was born on February 10, 1932, near Paoli, Colorado, and went home to be with the Lord on January 26, 2022.
Dr. H.C. Hill and Aunt Nora Fisbeck attended her birth.  Her parents, Bill and Bess (Schropfer) Fisbeck, named their middle daughter Gwendolyn Ilene. Gwen was predeceased by her parents, her older sister Delores Austin Zinzli, and her younger sister Betty Willey.
Gwen grew up on a farm and regularly milked the cows and helped her dad. She learned to drive a John Deere tractor and was her dad’s tractor ‘man’ during harvest. Their house on that farm had no indoor plumbing, so her other chores included carrying buckets of water from the well to the house for cooking and bathing.
She cherished her paintings of the farm where she grew up and often shared fond memories of the farm. Windmills always held a special place in Gwen’s heart. Later in life Gwen recycled barnwood from that farm into frames for her paintings and other memorabilia.
She attended Pleasant View Country School, District 15, where her teachers included Geraldine Morgan, Gladys Barker and Alice Blakesly. Following her graduation from Phillips County High School in 1949, she entered Beth El School of Nursing at age 18. She earned and associate degree in nursing at Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs. She completed her nursing training in Greeley, Colorado and her surgical training at Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Denver, Colorado.
Gwen loved the outdoors and was an avid skier while she lived near the mountains. She was a member of the Timberline Club whose members were over six feet tall. It was there that she met her future husband, Robert William Keefauver.
Gwen and Bob were married on April 5, 1958 and moved to California.  She quickly started her career as a nurse at Pacoima Lutheran Hospital in Sylmar, California. After a time, her career took her to Saint Joseph’s Medical Center in Burbank, California. During her employment at Saint Joseph’s Medical Center, she completed her bachelor’s degree in nursing. She specialized as an entero-stoma therapist through University of Southern California (USC).  During her employment at Saint Joseph’s Medical Center, she additionally served on the surgical, general neurology and lithotripsy teams.
She was an active member of Peace Lutheran Church in Lake View Terrace, California and was the organist for forty-plus years. After moving to Palmdale, California, Gwen continued to drive over 50 miles one way every Sunday to play the organ.  She served her sisters and brothers in Christ under the leadership of Pastor Jon Imme.
Gwen had a great sense of humor and typically responded to a joke with “That was a knee-slapper!” Gwen often spoke of looking forward to playing a lot of golf in retirement. She was instrumental in organizing women's golf tournaments at El Cariso Country Club in Sylmar, California. At the time of her death, she owned the ground where the driving range for the Holyoke Golf Course is located.
She was loved by many and had a long and fulfilling life serving the Lord and her family and friends. She also loved her many dogs over the years, Trixie, Pooch, Cindy-Sue, and Sami-Sue 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0.
Gwen is survived by husband Robert (Bob), son Doug and daughter-in-law Cindie, grandson Kyle and his wife Kim, and granddaughter Kellie, in addition to several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Delbert Arthur Marquardt - October 10, 1946 - January 15, 2022

Departed: 01/15/2022 (Holyoke)
Obituary Preview: Delbert Arthur Marquardt
Delbert Arthur Marquardt was born, the second child, to Arthur Walter Marquardt and Maxine (Span) Marquardt on October 10, 1946.  At first sight, it was obvious that this baby was going to be a very special human being.  Doctors warned the parents their new son, with his disabilities, would never live past the age of 35, and they needed to consider putting him in an institution.  They refused.
Even before his elementary years, Delbert’s father was instrumental in teaching and guiding him into “always do your best” and “never give up”!  He attended                        School through the 8th grade at a little country school District #6 and then District #7.  He attended 9th grade at Julesburg High School, but because he became unable to walk, he had no formal classroom education after that year.  But his learning didn’t stop!  Even though he did not have any formal lessons from the school, he read everything he could.  He was awarded a diploma with the rest of his class in 1964.
He was later able to walk, and after working with his parents on the farm for 4 years, he decided he wanted to go to college.  His cousin Raymond Marquardt, a college professor, was instrumental in that encouragement.  He took entrance tests and “aced” them!  He attended Northeast Junior College at Sterling for 2 years, then transferred to Colorado State University.  He joined the Farm House fraternity, and spent many hours there, making friendships which he still had.  In 1974, he was one quarter from graduation, his father was diagnosed with cancer, and asked him to return home to help on the farm.  He did so.  There he farmed with his mother, continuing on after the death of his father.
In 1985, Maxine retired and moved into town.  Delbert took over the full operation of the corporation.  It was said by their accountant/farm consultant, that the corporation would go into bankruptcy the following year, but his determination to bring it back, paid off.  Today he has built a thriving business. He had a passion for drag racing.  He built his own car which won him several trophies.  He traveled to Hawaii twice, Mexico City, and other points in the Caribbean.  He bought an airplane and took flying lessons.  Being a farm operator, he drove the tractors, combine, and semis.  He started his hobbies of refurbishing 17 antique John Deere tractors, with help.  He started collecting classic cars, with a ’77 and ’81 Corvettes, and his pride and joy, a 1965 Mustang.  In addition he collected 5 Model T’s, and with friend, Jim Lightfoot, had them refurbished.  In 2012, he became very ill and hospitalized for 4 months.  Insisting that he return home, and being warned by doctors that “if he did so, he would die”, he enlisted the help of a friend and part time office secretary, Donna Lawson.  She because his full-time nurse.  His life-long dream of having a wife and family, was achieved on June 27th of 2019, when he persuaded Donna to marry him.  In this union, he gained 2 sons, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.  He loved every one of them and they adored him! He was a humble man with a firm faith in God.  It could be said he was one of the best wheat farmers in the area, but to him, that production was “a gift from God”.  He was very intelligent.  He insisted that his dealings with friends, neighbors and business associates, be fair.  He was generous, and deeply cared about anyone he knew.  He was well acquainted with the words “please” and “thank you” and would help anyone he could.  He worked very hard long hours, and expected those who worked with him, to do the same.  Every waking moment he was “thinking how he could improve his operation”.  One of his greatest moments was when a college professor and his college advisor came out to visit and applaud him on his accomplishments.  He never understood why people would think he’d done something so great….he was simply doing his job! On the eve of his death, he had a conversation with a former hired man, Joe Notario.  Delbert had been very close to his daughter as a little girl, and they are spent many hours together while her father worked for him.  He always felt Tara was “his adopted” daughter!  He asked for permission to adopt her, and it was granted. Another dream came true!
Delbert met his Savior face to face on January 15, 2022, leaving Melissa Memorial Hospital in Holyoke, Colorado, surrounded by family members and special business friend, Greg Brecht.  He is preceded in death by both maternal and paternal grandparents, his parents, Arthur and Maxine Marquardt, beloved sister Sharon Soper, as well as his constant companion for the last 13 years, Jezzy.  Left to mourn his passing are his wife, Donna, stepsons Brent, and Michael, and 5 step-grandchildren, and 12 step-great grandchildren, brother in law Max Soper, several aunts, uncles, many cousins and other extended family members.

Elvira Geraldine Krogmeier - February 25, 1935 - January 09, 2022

Departed: 01/09/2022 (Holyoke)
Obituary Preview: Elvira Geraldine (Rescinito) Krogmeier of Holyoke, CO passed away peacefully at home January 9, 2022 at the age of 86. She wrote her own story years ago for a Phillips County history book, and using that, we'd like to let her tell you about herself. (Edited for continuity and narrative.)
"My name is Elvira G. Krogmeier. I was born in Galesburg, IL on February 25, 1935. My family and I resided in Abingdon, IL, 200 miles southwest of Chicago. My parents were Matteo and Rachele (Receniello) Rescinito, immigrants from Italy. I was the youngest of my siblings.
I attended Washington Grade School in Abingdon. I was crowned Homecoming Queen (1952) of Abingdon High School and graduated from AHS in 1953. After high school I began working for an insurance agency. My work consisted of typing up insurance policies, operating the tele-type machine (incoming and outgoing telegrams), and also served as a Notary Public from 1953 until 1958. On June 1, 1957, I married C. William Krogmeier from Amherst, CO. The wedding took place at All Souls Catholic Church, Abingdon.  To this union four children were born:  Christina (Tina,) Thomas (Tom,) Tamara (Tammy,) and Matthew (Matt.)
We lived in Abingdon until 1961.That year Bill and I, Tina and Tom moved to Amherst. I also served as a Notary for several years when we lived in Amherst.
Other dates that I remember: in 1950 I won $50 as a door prize at our local theater, our engagement in October 1956, our marriage in 1957, and the birth of our four children. I have 8 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren.
I worked at the Amherst Post Office as Postmaster. I started as a substitute, then on June 10, 1983, I was installed as Postmaster, the first woman to hold the position in the history of the Amherst Post Office. Over the years, I had several interests and hobbies, like crocheting, knitting, doing craft work, collecting dolls, taking piano lessons, and collecting art pottery pieces from my hometown. I cheer on the Denver Nuggets and Notre Dame Fighting Irish! We enjoyed going to Nuggets games once in a while. I even learned to use an iPad and enjoyed several word games! As a child of Italian immigrants, I'm extremely proud of my Italian heritage! My claim to fame locally are my Italian cookies (pizzelle)!  But my most enduring family legacy is making ricotta cheese! "Stir the milk in the pot with the handle of the wooden spoon...one direction only, no reversing or you'll undo the cheese!!" I'm proud of the fact that my children and grandchildren keep the family recipes as part of their own families' traditions. It's important, or it will become a lost art and that would be a shame...I'll tell anyone that will listen...all my children know how to make the ricotta and most of my grandchildren too!"
