Obituary Preview: Patsy Jean Teague Pitts, a beloved daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother passed away on Sunday, April 28, 2024 following a lengthy illness. She was 78.

Born August 13, 1945, Jean was the daughter of the late Fate McCoy Teague and Grace Burns Teague. She was a graduate of Fred T. Foard High School and Glenn’s Secretarial and Business School of Hickory.

A stalwart employee, Jean served Superior Cable, Siecor Corporation, and Corning in the roles of Inside Sales and Quotation Specialist, Supervisor of Building Services, and Manager of Trade Shows and Exhibits. Following her retirement from Corning, she served both Catawba Country Club as the Marketing and Membership Director as well as The Chamber of Catawba County as the Visitor Center Manager beginning in 2006.

As a pillar of the community, Jean was a lifelong member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church where she led and served on numerous committees, including Sunday School teacher, Church Council, Altar Guild, and Evangelism Committees. In addition, she was a charter member of the Catawba County Republican Women’s Club and founder and president of the Mountain View Recreation Center. Jean was also appointed by Governor Beverly Perdue as a board member of the Selective Service System for North Carolina.

In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her husband Carl Pitts and son, Grant Pitts. Jean is survived by her children Scott (Angie) Pitts of Sylva, NC and Leigh (Matt) Smith of Gastonia, NC along with grandsons Jack and Luke and granddaughters Annie and Ella. Jean is also survived by Roger Massey of Hickory who is a beloved companion and friend.

Receiving of family and friends will be held on Thursday, May 2, 2024 from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm with the funeral service beginning at 4:00 pm. Visitation and funeral service will be held at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hickory, NC. The family will hold a private interment at a later date.

Georgia Deal Walker - October 19, 1934 - April 27, 2024

Obituary Preview: Georgia Bernice Deal Walker, of Hickory, passed away Saturday, April 27, 2024 at The Greens of Hickory.

Born October 19, 1934, in Catawba County, she was the daughter of the late Jennie Mathes Deal and Edward Chester Deal.

She was preceded in death by her husband John Marvin Walker Sr; daughter, Janet Carswell; granddaughter, Crystal Carswell; and two grandsons, Andrew Stacey and David Walker Jr, three brothers, and 2 sisters.

Georgia was an honor graduate of the Oxford High School, Class of ’52, with 12 years of perfect attendance. She was editor of the school yearbook and kept in touch with classmates, organizing many class reunions. She served in the PTA and PTO organizations in Catawba and Iredell counties from 1959-1997. She guided girls through Girl Scouts as leader in Brownie, Junior and Cadet levels in Catawba and Iredell Counties from 1963-1976.

In 1971 when her 5 children were grown, Georgia was employed in retail sales until she became Office Manager for Rotary Drill Service, Inc., Newton, from 1980-1990. She was a faithful member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Conover, where she taught Sunday School.

This amazingly beautiful, brilliant lady spent her life in service to others; helping the terminally ill, and rescuing animals, including 100 feral cats whom she had spayed, neutered, and fed daily for 21 years until the last cat died at age 17. This is who she was.

Survivors include her son John Walker, Jr. (Judy) of Thomasville, NC; son David Walker, Sr. (Tara), of Conover, NC; daughter Jenny W. Hill (Richard), of Manassas, VA; daughter Deborah Walker, of New Bern, NC; grandchildren, Trevor Hill (Mary Jo), Joshua Stacey, Justin Walker, Diane Starnes (Scott), Sheree Orr (Ed), Deniece Daly (Jeff), Kimberly Clark (Michael), Christina Walker, Jennifer Pressley (Brandon), Miriam Stacey, and Shea Logan (Clay); she is also survived by 15 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Christian Loren Kerr - October 15, 1969 - April 27, 2024

Obituary Preview: Christian Loren Kerr, 54, of Hickory, went to be home with the Lord on Saturday, April 27, 2024.

He was born on October 15,1969 in Kansas City, Missouri to his father, Michael Kerr and to his late mother, Billie Jean Kerr.

Surviving are his wife, Julie Kerr, and sons, Taylor and Aiden Kerr; Brothers: Clint Cordry and wife Marlene, Shannon Kerr and Amy; Sisters: Donlyn Cordry, Kelly Cordry, and Tracy Hinman and husband Al; and numerous family and friends.

Christian was a graduate of East Surry High School in 1987. He attended the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and graduated in 1992 with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology. He was a devoted member of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity, Delta Lambda Chapter and was active in the brotherhood throughout his life. Julie and Christian met in 1989 when Julie visited the pet store where Christian was working at in the Eastland Mall. They were married in 1992. After living in Charlotte, then Ft. Lauderdale, Key Largo, South Miami, back to Charlotte, they finally settled in

Hickory. He started out as a scuba diving instructor, went into sales, and then worked for Liberty National insurance.

One of his biggest hobbies was scuba diving with Julie, Taylor, Aiden, and Michael, all certified divers. He loved to travel, attend sporting events, was active in missions, and enjoyed spending time with his family on the lake. Christian and Julie are members of Mecklenburg Community Church. His faith was a defining feature of his and his family’s life and he was a committed spiritual leader; always encouraging his wife and children to pursue God in every aspect of their lives. Christian’s hope for eternity was instrumental in leading others to a saving faith in Christ.

Christian was diagnosed with cancer in October of 2021. He didn’t let his battle get in the way of living his life to the fullest which included visiting the Holy Land, a lifelong dream.

The family will receive friends at Bass Smith funeral home from 9:30-11:00 AM on Wednesday, May 1, 2024.  A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM with burial at Woodlawn Cemetery following service.

He was born January 22, 1959 in Phoenix, AZ.

Greg was a proud US Army veteran and a member of The United States Army Brotherhood of Tankers, Inc., (USABOT). He loved spending time outdoors. He and his wife enjoyed traveling in their RV and marking off items on their “bucket list”.

Survivors include his wife, Kathy McMullen Campbell; his daughter, Christina Bolinger; his son, Skyler McMullen; three grandchildren, Shannon Mingle, Kristen Mingle, and Connor Bolinger; and two canine companions, Moose and Jack.

A celebration of Greg’s life with military honors will be held at a later date.

Lewis (Jim) N. Mitchell - August 19, 1932 - April 24, 2024

Obituary Preview: Lewis N. Mitchell, known throughout his life as Jim, died with his family at his side on April 24, 2024 at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory.

Jim was a dedicated father, grandfather and great grandfather, a good friend, a furniture industry trailblazer, an all-weather golfing buddy and a diehard St. Louis Cardinals fan.

Born to Neal and Margaret Mitchell on August 19, 1932—the heart of the Great Depression—in theclose-knit mill village of Brookford, North Carolina, Jim developed independence at an early age. He spent his days roaming the nearby river and woods, playing ball (and later, soldiers), often with his cousin Dyke Little, and listening to the 50,000 watt radio broadcasts of the St. Louis Cardinals. He carried the value she learned in Brookford—hard work, stewardship, responsibility, optimism and respect for all—throughout his entire life.

When his slightly older neighbors headed off to France, Belgium and otherWorld War II battle zones, Jim got the chance as a 12-year-oldto hone his baseball skills on the semi-professional Brookford textile mills baseball league team. He later played on the 1948 Hickory American Legion baseball team that won the State and Southeast Regional titles, played football as well as baseball for Hickory Highand was recruited to play minor league baseball. Sports were his passion, but Jim was an excellent student as well.

In 1949, Jim was smitten by and married Mary Ruth Benfield. The couple raised five daughters– Denise, Cathy, Beth, Lori and Andrea (Andi) - who looked to him for advice and were inspired by his example. Thefamily was an active part of the congregation ofViewmont Baptist Church.

Jim’s marriage to Ruth Mitchell ultimately ended in divorce. He later married Dianne Deal Mitchell, who died of breast cancer in 2003.

Hebegan working infurniture manufacturing in 1954, rising to manage large brand name companies before making the decision, in 1989, to start his own company, McKinley Leather of Hickory, together with his daughters Lori Sadowski and Denise Mitchell. He deeply valued his employees and staff, getting to know and care for each of them personally. He had high expectations yet was known for treating people fairly and honoring his commitments. Jim loved hearing his customers’ life pursuits while visiting with them at the High Point Furniture Market.He took special pride in the growing leadership role Lori assumed as she began to take over management of McKinley.

Jim remained active in the company even after his retirement, consulting on strategy and maintaining friendships with McKinley sales representatives as well as other industry contacts who became part of the large community of family, friendsand acquaintances he treasured—and who treasured him.

Jim enjoyed international travel, beach trips and Friday night dancing with special companion Betsy Valentini. He loved playing golf with his comrades at Catawba Country Club, determined to keep playing, even after he had to carry portable oxygen for the last couple years. He retained his encyclopedic knowledge of sports teams and players, looked forward to checking the Cardinals box scores every morning, tracked current events closely and reveled in following the lives ofevery member of his cherished family.

He was a member of Corinth Reformed Church in Hickory.

In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by a brother, Charles, a sister, Bobbie, his wives Ruth Mitchell and Dianne Deal Mitchell and a beloved daughter, Andrea Mitchell.

He is survived by his daughters Denise Mitchell (Bob Weinberg), Cathy Leitch (Jim), Beth Crone (John), Lori Sadowski (Joey); grandchildrenBrooke Spellman, Rianne Burch Schmidt, Bradley Leitch, Will Crone, Andrew Crone, Chase Crone, Joseph Sadowski and Nicholas Sadowski; and 10 great grandchildren.

Jim’s well-lived life will be remembered and celebrated on Saturday, May 18. Visitation will be 12:30-1:45, followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 2 pm, at Corinth Reformed Church in Hickory.

Dr. James Cox Fahl - October 25, 1925 - April 21, 2024

Obituary Preview: Dr. James Cox Fahl of Hickory, NC passed away on Sunday, April 21, 2024.

Dr. Fahl was born October 25, 1925 in Auburn, PA to the late James E. Fahl and Dorothy Cox Fahl.

He was a graduate of West Reading (PA) High School and attended Harvard University for both his undergraduate degree and medical school diploma. Dr. Fahl served his medical internship and residency at the Mayo Clinic Rochester, MN. He served in the United States Army from 1951 until 1953 as a General Surgeon in West Germany.

Dr. Fahl’s General Surgical practice began in East Stroudsburg, PA in 1955 and continued there until 1972. That year he moved to Hickory, NC to continue his practice and later retired in 1990. For the next three years he was employed as Vice President of Medicine at Catawba Valley Medical Center until he fully retired in 1994.

A lover of the outdoors, Jim enjoyed hiking, camping, and weekly rounds of golf. Family cross country trailer trips in the ‘60s proved both rewarding and memorable. He also loved traveling with his wife, Pat, to exotic locales and annual excursions to the beach. Hilton Head Island was always a favorite. Whenever possible, and especially after retirement, he would escape to his cabin at Porter’s Lake Hunting and Fishing Club in Pennsylvania. Fishing, boating, exploring the woods, hunting, and good food were highlights of these visits. Jim loved to spend time with the family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Jim was married to the late Eleanore H. Fahl and is survived by three children: Jeffrey, Steven, and Jonathan. Later he married the late Patricia Fahl and is survived by his stepchildren: Phillip McCaul and Kathy Lovie. He is also survived by several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at a later date in Auburn, PA.

Obituary Preview: On Friday, April 19, 2024, Alistair Ralph Treadwell Long, age 11, of Hickory was received by his Creator, Lord, and Savior.

Born January 14, 2013, in Catawba County, N.C., he was the son of Rodney Long II and Dr. Courtney Parker-Long. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Ralph Parker Jr. and Linda Hathcock Parker.

Alistair was a member of Mtn. View Baptist Church, with his family, where his voice was often heard singing songs of faith and worship, and praising his Lord, whom he loved so much. He was very involved in the children’s church ministry, where he was accepted with much love. He was enrolled at Mtn. View Elementary School, where he attended the 4th grade. Playing the piano, singing, and dancing was among many of the things he enjoyed. Alistair was a champion Catawba County Special Olympian, who won 3 Gold Medals in swimming. He was also an active member of Cub Scout Pack #238. He enjoyed spending time with his brothers, playing video games, riding ATVs, and wrestling. He regularly prayed with his family before meals, where he would often end with his own special prayer. Most of all he loved Jesus and his family.

Those left to cherish his memories are his parents Rodney Long II and Dr. Courtney Parker-Long, as well as his brothers, whom he adored, Gavin, Harrison, and Graham Long, all of the home. And others left behind include a half-sister, Taylor Norton of Greeneville, TN, paternal grandparents, Rodney Long Sr. and Christine Brown, and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.

All family and friends are welcome. All are invited to come dressed as you want, as this will be a bright colorful funeral, and children of all ages are encouraged to attend. The service will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, April 27, 2024, at Mtn. View Baptist Church, 4266 River Rd., Hickory, N.C. 28602. The service will be officiated by Dr. Ron Skinner. The family will receive friends prior, from 2:00 – 3:00 PM. The Burial will follow at the Mtn. Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, 6156 Mtn. Grove Rd., Hickory, N.C. 28602.

Jerry Lee Sorrow - July 03, 1948 - April 18, 2024

Obituary Preview: Jerry Lee Sorrow, 75, of Hickory, passed away Thursday, April 18, 2024. Jerry was surrounded by family as he was promoted to glory.

Born July 3, 1948 in Clark County, Georgia, he was the son of the late James Pearless Sorrow and Louree Hardman Sorrow. Jerry was the fourth child in a family of five, proceeded in death by his brother Charles Sorrow, and his sister, Linda A. Sorrow. Jerry has two living siblings, brother Danny Sorrow, and sister, Edna Sorrow. To be in the presence of Jerry and one of his siblings was to see true love; all five of the Sorrow siblings loved each other, and their families, wholeheartedly and passionately. There are many Sorrow’s out there, and Jerry would be elated to know that his dedication to family will continue in the lives of his loved ones, near and far.

Jerry spent his life dedicated to the Salvation Army; he served as an officer, the director of the Boys and Girls Club in Hickory, Gastonia, and Durham. He retired from the Salvation Army as the Shelter Monitor of the Hickory Corp. Jerry’s passion for helping others was evident in every interaction he had with those he served; he respected and valued every person he met. He had a way of making everyone feel important.

Retirement brought Jerry relaxation and time spent with his family. Some days he liked to put puzzles together, other days he was tubing on the lake. He enjoyed thrifting, playing cards, spending time with his family, and eating ice cream with his dog, Claudia. He was the light of the room when his family was around because we all gravitated towards his smile and tender nature. His infectious laughter and witty sense of humor kept his family on their toes; he could dish it out just as well as he could take it.

He is survived by his children: Edna Louree Engle and husband Justin, Jerry Fredrick Sorrow and partner Beth, Keith Joseph Sorrow and wife Jeanne, Christina Marie Sigmon and husband, Jonathon. Jerry, or “Poppy” as most of his grandchildren called him, had fifteen grandchildren and many great grandchildren.

Jerry’s family is grateful for care provided by Hospice and Palliative Care of Cabarrus, and would like offer special thank you to his nurse, Jennifer Lowder, for bringing a smile to him during her visits. Jennifer was able to get Jerry to laugh when no one else could. The entire hospice team has been a blessing to the Sorrow family.

A memorial service will be held May 4, 2024 at 2:00 PM at the Salvation Army in Hickory with Major Paula Henderson officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1 - 2:00 PM at the Salvation Army.

Obituary Preview: After 88 years of love and devotion Ned Franklin Pitts of Hickory, left this world surrounded by his loving family to join his heavenly Father Tuesday, April 16, 2024 at Catawba Valley Medical Center.

Born January 5, 1936 in Caldwell County, he was the son of the late Albert Ardie Pitts and Nina Yoder Pitts.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, Ned was a longtime member of Royal Chapel Church of God. He retired from Century Furniture after also working with M.G. Crouch Lumber, Abernathy Plumbing and Startown Plumbing. He helped start Boy Scout Troop #345 serving as Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster for 55 years mentoring hundreds of young men by his Christlike faith and Christian example.

Ned is survived by his high school sweetheart and loving wife of 66 years, Betty Greenhill Pitts; two daughters: Robin P. Wright and husband Chris, Lori P. Chapman and husband Doug; four sisters: Linda P. Travis, Tanya P. Krozos, Felicia P. Alley, Candace P. Moore and husband Randall; three brothers: Mark Pitts and wife Brenda, Mike (Spud) Pitts, Jeff Pitts and wife Debbie; seven grandchildren: Bethany W. Richardson and husband Zachary, Caleb Wright and wife Vicky, Abigail, Lydia, Amelia, Eli, and Molly Chapman; six great-grandchildren: Charli, Essie, and Darci Richardson, Quinlan, Gracie, and Iris Wright; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Thursday, April 18, 2024 from 5:30 – 7:30 PM at Royal Chapel Church of God, Hickory, NC.

The funeral service will be held Friday, April 19, 2024 at 3:00 PM at Royal Chapel Church of God with Pastor Mike Campbell and Pastor Carlton Davidson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Born March 6, 1926 in Alexander County, she was the daughter of the late Elijah W. Teague and Martha Preslar Teague.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Horace Jacob Chapman; five brothers: Maynard Teague, Leon Teague, Bruce Teague, Hal Teague, Horace Teague; two sisters: Ethel T. Adams and Grace T. Rich.

Marjorie was a member of Viewmont Baptist Church in Hickory and had retired from the Naval Surface Weapons Center in Silver Springs, MD. For 23 years she and Horace spent six months of the year in Cape Coral, FL.

She was a past Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, had volunteered at both the hospital and hospice.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews: Jane T. White (Max), Kay A. Stylers (Matt), Richard Adams (Nancy), Judy T. Frye, Elaine Young (Charles), Wilson Teague (Maureen), Nelson Teague (Rebecca), Shea Teague (Carole), Audrey T. Isenhour (Dwight), and Ann C. Davis (Tommy).

A memorial service will be held Friday, April 19, 2024 at 2:00 PM at Viewmont Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Andrew Rawls officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the family gathering room at the church.

Mrs. Lanier was a member of First United Methodist Church, Hickory. She was a librarian with the Caldwell County School System where she was honored by Governor Jim Hunt for her volunteer work. She enjoyed making crafts for her friends and the church store, and was famous for her crochet popcorn garland. She also loved nature, especially bird watching and flowers.

Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Matthew Lanier, of the home, two brothers, Parks Lanier, Jr., of Radford, VA and Wayne Lanier (Susan) of Waycross, GA; niece Stephanie Lanier (Brian) Siegel of Loudon, TN; nephew Trevor (Heather) Lanier, great niece Alta Lanier, great nephew Parks “Chewy” Lanier of Dunlap, TN; niece Wren (Phil Edwards) Lanier, great niece Gray Edwards Lanier of Durham, NC.

Obituary Preview: Patsy Brown Canipe Martin, 91, of Hickory, passed away Saturday, April 13, 2024 at her home.

Born July 13, 1932 in Catawba County, she was the daughter of the late Lillie Brown Canipe and Elbert Theodore Canipe.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Jimmy Martin; son, Michael Martin; an infant daughter; brother, Wayne Canipe and his wife, Cathy; a sister, Peggy Townsend and husband, Andrew; a nephew, Lewis Townsend and niece, Mary Lou Townsend.

As a young lady, she attended church on Sunday morning, Sunday evening, Monday to GA’s or RA’s, Wednesday night for Prayer Meeting and Friday night for choir practice. She also often played the piano when asked. She was the organist at Brown Memorial Baptist Church and played the Xylophone in the band at Claremont Central High School [Hickory High].

Her hobbies included roller skating, league bowling, playing bridge, dancing with her husband in their dance club, and playing bingo. She loved to do needlework, crochet and made all of her daughter’s clothes until her graduation from high school. She and Jimmy loved to travel all over the United States and she became a part of a travel group with her daughter and granddaughter making wonderful annual trips with her special friend, Kim Bolick, the exalted organizer of every trip! She was an avid walker until her late 80’s and enjoyed watching a variety of sporting events on TV. Her grandson can attest to the fact that she loved golf and watched many matches with her on TV.

Physical ailments were dealt with through her prayers and her true grit. She left with the grace and beauty from this earth that she was born with. She was referred to as a cat with nine lives and her son-in-law called her “Hacksaw” for her strength and will to overcome all obstacles.

Patsy was a great cook, devoted caring daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, sister, aunt and niece. She was a fun-loving, gentle, amazingly kind and happy lady who loved all and was loved by all.

She is survived by her daughter, Donna Turnmyre and husband Ken of Hickory; Sister In Law Betty Martin and husband Leonard; Grandchildren: Michael Turnmyre and wife Nicole, Nicole Kloss and husband Mike, Anne Moser and husband Trey, Sydney Osborne and husband Tom; great-grandchildren: Luke Moser, Dylan Moser, Mason Moser, Mady Turnmyre, Katy Turnmyre, Kiersten Osborne, Bryce Osborne, and Carson Kloss. Special thanks to her caregiver, Tracie Hovis; Friends who brought her delicious food including Julie Fotheringham, Kathy Robinson, and Sue Winnell.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening at Bass-Smith Funeral Home from 5:30 – 7:30 PM in the Jack Bass Memorial Building.

The funeral service will be held Thursday, April 18, 2024 at 11:00 AM in the chapel at Bass-Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark Reavill officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.

Coble Alexander Hartman - March 08, 2005 - April 13, 2024

Obituary Preview: Coble Alexander Hartman was born seven minutes ahead of his fraternal twin brother on Tuesday, March 8, 2005, and passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, April 13, 2024. He was 19.

Coble is survived by his twin brother Kellen, his big brother Timothy, his mother Carol Anne, and his father Jeff; as well as many extended family.

He is preceded in untimely death by his uncle Kyle and his grandfather Brad.

Before graduating high school, Coble attended Joint Science and Technology Institute West, administered by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE). ORISE is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) institute managed by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through a contract between ORAU and DOE.

Coble finished college early with an Associate of Arts from Alexander Early College and most recently completed the Data Processing and Technician program through the University of California, Berkeley.

He had an innovative and entrepreneurial spirit from an early age, raising thousands of dollars for his schools with his filmmaking skills, and started his own business while applying and working for others. He worked for several area businesses as an Associate Producer, Assistant Video Editor, Sound Engineer, Tech Supervisor, and Data Science Engineer.

Coble was a perfectionist. He put a lot of research into, and took enormous pride in his work, wanting every project and those involved to be the best it and they could be.

Coble studied guitar and had a natural gift for acting and singing. He had a passion for music, theatre, film, singing, humor, hosting, guitars, gaming, streaming, smart technology, computers, V.R. & A.I., and most recently motorcycles and playing guitar for contemporary worship services with his twin brother and mother. Most importantly, he loved his family and rarely missed an opportunity to spend time with them.

Coble was an old soul. He had the gift of gab. Even as a young kid, his quick wit and humor drew people to him. He had an easy demeanor and could carry on a conversation with anyone. He had a special way of making everyone around him feel seen. He was highly empathetic and felt things deeply. He was self-aware and open with those closest to him about his own fears, doubts, and imperfections.

Coble knew what you needed at any given moment. He could make anyone feel like his best friend. He had gravity and selflessly helped you feel as if you were the center of the universe. He made the most of his life. He could have been anything and was everything to everyone. He wanted and would want everyone to just enjoy themselves, having saved a quote from one of his instructors that said, “Best I can tell, we’re just trying to keep ourselves amused until we die.”

Words are inadequate to summarize Coble Hartman and the impact he made on all of us in life and death. A giver, taken. The support from family, friends, our community, and complete strangers is a testament to Coble’s selfless soul and charm.

A celebration of Coble’s amazing life will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Hickory, North Carolina in the fellowship hall / contemporary worship space on Saturday, May 25 from 2 pm.

Mary Latham Seagle - July 11, 1946 - April 12, 2024

Obituary Preview: On April 12, 2024, we said goodbye, or better yet, see you later, to a woman whose kind heart has touched so many lives. Mary Lee Latham Seagle, age 77 of Vale, lost her long courageous battle with Alzheimer’s and is now rejoicing in the arms of Jesus!

Mary was born to the late Roby “Park” Latham and Della Ray Roark Latham and grew up at the foot of Three Top Mountain in West Jefferson. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, James Thomas Seagle; two sisters, Gay Dancy and Mildred “Midge” Bare; and a daughter-in-law, Angela Allison Seagle.

Mary worked most of her life in furniture and was a one-of-a-kind sewer. During her off time, she would often sew purses and wallets, and she loved being outdoors and finding 4-leaf clovers, but what she loved most was playing cards and beating everyone she played with. Mary was also a member of Blackburn Baptist Church.

Those left to cherish her loving memory are her two children; Lisa (Greg) Sullins of Taylorsville, and Chris (Tabitha) Seagle of Vale; five grandchildren, Thomas (Jessica) Seagle, Chasity (Jacob) Fox of Taylorsville, Josh Sullins of Taylorsville, Skyler Brittain of Lenoir, and Cheyenne Lail of Canton; two great-grandchildren who brought her so much joy, River and Autumn Fox of Taylorsville; three sisters, May Taylor of West Jefferson, Joann Foster of Wilkesboro, and Margie Brown of Jefferson; one brother, R.P. Latham of West Jefferson; two sisters-in-law, Rachel Smith of Long View, and Linda Seagle of Taylorsville; and several nieces and nephews whom she loved so dearly.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 PM on Friday, April 19, 2024, at Bass-Smith Funeral Home in Hickory. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, April 20 at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Granite Falls with the Rev. Phil Jolly officiating.

He is survived by four children and four grandchildren; Robert Lee McKaughn, III and wife, Martha McKaughn, their children, Katherine Webster and husband Tyler Webster. Carter Kelsey and her husband, Tal Kelsey; Alice Gibbon McKaughn, children Harley Farkas and William “Liam” Farkas, Alexander Shuford McKaughn; Margery McKaughn Black and husband, Bill Black.

Bob graduated in 1953 from Hickory High School after attending Darlington School in Rome, Georgia. Bob was a businessman and dabbled in banking, real estate and textile sales throughout his life.

Bob got into amateur racing, go-carts and then cars, at a very young age. He won the Chimney Rock Hill Climb at 22 years old and again the following year. Bob was an avid golfer and tennis player in his younger years.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert Lee McKaughn, Sr., and Ruby Funderburk McKaughn, and his sister, Peggy Lou Frick.

In the end, it’s not about how we die, but how we lived. Bob lived a full and happy life.

Mr. Holland was retired from Century Furniture and was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church. He enjoyed woodworking, specially making different cars and trucks.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Thelma Ruth Smith Holland of the home, three sons’: Charles E. Holland and wife Linda of Bethlehem, Roger Holland and wife Cathy of Conover, and Brian Holland and wife Angel of Bethlehem, grandchildren: G. Joan was a member of Corinth Reformed Church and was a retired teacher at Bethlehem Elementary School. She was also an Associate Professor at Lenoir-Rhyne University. Joan was a world traveler, an avid reader, artist, and most notably the author and publisher of the book Fearless Faith. She was the President of the local PSI chapter of Kappa Kappa Iota and previously state President the Kappa Kappa Iota. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Lanny Huffman of the home, two daughters: Meredith H. Mizell and husband Chris of Lexington, S.C., and Madison (Madi) Huffman of Newberry, S.C., grandchildren; Nicolas Chalcas, Coleston Mizell, and Amelia Mizell all of Lexington, S.C., brother, Marc Watson of Lenoir, N.C.

A celebration of Joan’s life will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at Corinth Reformed Church with the Rev. Lori Blocker officiating. The family will have an informal gathering following the service in the Althouse Room at the church.

Born March 14, 1948, in Burke County, N.C., he was the son of the late Guy Lawson Huffman and Rebecca Butler Huffman.

Larry had a long career as a letter carrier with the United States Post Office and as a regional union representative and local president for the National Association of Letter Carriers. He was a true entrepreneur owning several businesses including Old Hickory Stamp & Coin, Old Hickory Embroidery, several real estate businesses, and food service industries, most notably as the co-proprietor of the Post Office BBQ. His most recent ventures were as the co-owner of Southern Gems, Minerals & Fossils and as the liaison between the Eastern Federation of Mineralogical & Lapidary Societies and the Catawba Valley Gem and Mineral Club.

He was dedicated to the service of others and to God. He was a member and trustee of Highland Baptist Church in Hickory, N.C., a 32nd degree mason, member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and Worshipful Master for Lodge #343 of Hickory, N.C. He also was a member of the Catawba County Shrine Club and led their catering and fundraising efforts for many years. He was a charter member of the Oasis Gator Patrol, a Shrine parade unit.

Most importantly, Larry was a loving and caring son, brother, husband, father, uncle, and grandfather. His grandchildren loved spending time with their “Gramps.” He was friendly and kind, never met a stranger, and always had a smile or a joke to share. Those who met him were blessed to know him, and his family and friends will never forget the joy of his love.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Brenda Hill Huffman of the home; sons Scott Wade Huffman and wife Carmen of Cullowhee, N.C., and Bryan Alex Huffman and wife Kellie of Cary, N.C.; grandchildren Calvin Alexander Huffman, Linus James Huffman, Ellery Wade Huffman, and Banks Harold Huffman; sister, Kathy Huffman Isenhour and husband Jerry of Hickory; niece, Carrie McCraw of Huntington Beach, CA; nephew, John Andrew Isenhour of Atlanta, GA; and great nephew, Brody James McCraw.

A service to celebrate the life of Larry Dean Huffman will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, April 7, 2024, at Highland Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Jeff Myers officiating.The family will receive friends at the church from 1:30 – 3:00 PM prior to the service. The burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

Obituary Preview: On April 2nd, 2024, a beloved member of our family, Joseph A. Smith, returned to our Heavenly Father. He was born on August 8, 1944, in Asheville, North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his parents, John E. Smith, Sr., and Josephine A. Smith. He is survived by his siblings, John E. Smith, Jr. (Becky), Jacqueline S. Baldwin (Samuel), and Jane S. Youngblood (Garry), as well as his niece, Jeannine Cox and nephews Thomas Baldwin, David Baldwin, Michael Youngblood, and Jeffrey Smith.

Joseph enjoyed outdoor adventures; in particular, he liked hiking, camping, canoeing, and traveling to many parts of the country. He especially loved the American West where, for 8 years, he lived in Salt Lake City, Utah. National Parks, such as Yellowstone, Glacier, and Zion, were favorites.

During his career, Joseph was an insurance adjuster and workers’ compensation claims specialist. Joseph retired in 2006 from America International Group (AIG) and moved to Hendersonville, NC, where he dedicated many hours to church service. Earlier in his life, Joseph served a two-year church mission in North and South Dakota. He devoted many hours to family history research while living in Salt Lake City, Utah. Later, his service included callings in the Young Men’s Organization, Sunday School, and a calling to serve for three years in the Micronesian Branch in Asheville, NC. After moving to Hickory in 2018 to be closer to family, he volunteered in the community, including time serving at the Soup Kitchen in downtown Hickory. He always loved helping others. He followed the admonition of the Apostle Paul in doing good to all men.

A memorial service for Joseph A. Smith is planned for 3:00 pm on Sunday, April 14th, 2024, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints located at 4065 N Center St, Hickory, NC 28601.

Obituary Preview: Makyla Lashae Millsaps, age 20, died early morning of April 2nd, 2024. She passed away peacefully in her home. Makyla was born June 30, 2003 to Jackie Fleming. Makyla was shy a few months of celebrating her 21st Birthday.

Makyla had a good but rough life. She was given 2 years to live, but she exceeded those by giving us 20 full years. She was bedridden her whole life and had a wheelchair due to her severe cerebral palsy. She couldn’t eat, walk or go to the bathroom on her own. Makyla had a family that loved her more than anything in the world. Makyla loved the color purple, loved to smile, laugh and spend time with her family. Her nicknames were KayKay and KylaBug. She especially loved spending time with her late grandparents Jack and Maria Fleming. They were her world and she was theirs.

Survivors include her parents, Mother Jackie Fleming Kale, her Stepdad Dirriel Kale Jr, her Brother Dirriel Kale III and her father Emmanuel Millsaps. Along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Family will be receiving friends and family at Bass-Smith Funeral Home of Hickory, NC at 12:30pm til 2 pm, Saturday April 13th, 2024. Funeral Service will follow at 2pm in the chapel.

Born April 1, 1923 in Catawba County on Easter Sunday, she was the daughter of the late Doyle W. Starnes and Mollie Evans Starnes.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Worth Yount, Jr.; an infant son, David Worth Yount; three brothers: Eugene, James and Donny Starnes; and two sisters, Margaret Keck and twin Louise Triplett.

She is survived by her daughter, Anna Alexander and husband Chris Alexander of Hickory and three grandchildren: Jake Alexander, Matt Alexander and Amy Alexander.

Lucille enjoyed a 37-year banking career, starting as a clerk in the Installment Loan Department of the First National Bank of Catawba County. She later transferred to the newly formed credit card division and was named head of the department in 1981, prior to the bank’s merger with First Union. She retired in 1984 as Assistant Vice President in the Consumer Loan Department.

Lucille valued nothing more than being surrounded by her family; taking care of them, sitting with them, and especially cooking for them. She was happiest in their presence.

A family graveside service will be held at Catawba Memorial Park on Friday, April 5th at 11:00 AM.
