Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice of a person's death, often published in a newspaper or online. It typically includes a brief biography of the deceased, information about the funeral or memorial service, and may include details about the person’s life, achievements, and information about the surviving family members.

Is an obituary the same as a death notice?

No, an obituary is more detailed and often includes a biographical sketch. A death notice is typically a shorter announcement that a death has occurred and may include basic information about funeral arrangements without providing a detailed account of the person's life or achievements.

Who writes obituaries?

Obituaries can be written by family members, friends, or funeral home staff. Sometimes, journalists write obituaries for prominent figures, and in rare cases, individuals may write their own obituaries as part of pre-planning their funeral arrangements.

Are obituaries published for everyone who dies?

No, not everyone has an obituary published. It is often a personal choice by the family of the deceased or may depend on the individual's prominence in the community. Some may opt for a simple death notice, while others may not publish any announcement.

How do you decide what information to include in an obituary?

Choosing what to include in an obituary often involves highlighting the significant achievements and characteristics of the deceased, as well as relevant funeral and memorial details. Personal anecdotes, loving memories, and messages of thanks to care providers can also be included.

Can an obituary be published both online and in print?

Yes, obituaries can be published in traditional print formats, such as newspapers, and online through various platforms, including social media, memorial websites, and online newspapers.

What is the average cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary can vary widely depending on the newspaper, its circulation size, and whether the obituary is printed, online, or both. Prices can range from free to several hundred dollars.

Are there any free alternatives to paid obituaries?

Yes, some alternatives include free community newsletters, social media, and free obituary websites. Families may also create a memorial webpage or use online platforms to share details without cost.

How long does an obituary typically stay published in a newspaper?

In print, an obituary will usually appear for one day, although arrangements can be made for multiple days. Online obituaries may remain indefinitely on the internet on the website where they are published.

What happens if an obituary contains an error?

If an obituary contains an error, family members should contact the publication as soon as possible to correct the information. Most newspapers have policies for correcting and reissuing obituaries with errors.

Is there a standard structure or format for writing an obituary?

While there's no single standard format, most obituaries follow a similar structure: opening with a statement of death, biographical sketch, list of survivors, details on the funeral or memorial service, and often a closing message or thank you note.

Can a family choose not to publish an obituary?

Yes, publishing an obituary is a personal choice and not a requirement. Some families may choose to communicate the death through other means or prefer to keep the matter private.

How can I write a heartfelt obituary?

To write a heartfelt obituary, include personal stories, shared moments, and characteristics that capture the essence of the deceased. Use empathetic and respectful language that honors and commemorates their life.

What is an appropriate length for an obituary?

The appropriate length for an obituary can vary, but a typical length is around 200-500 words. It should be long enough to cover key aspects of the person's life and death, but concise enough to maintain reader interest.

Are photographs typically included with obituaries?

Yes, photographs are commonly included with obituaries to give a visual representation of the deceased. This can be especially meaningful for readers who may not have seen the person for some time.

What if the deceased person didn't have any notable achievements?

An obituary is not solely about highlighting achievements; it's about acknowledging a person’s life. Focus on relationships, qualities, hobbies, or any aspect that was meaningful to the individual and their loved ones.

How do you address the cause of death in an obituary?

The cause of death can be mentioned in an obituary if the family wishes to share this information. It can be as specific or as vague as preferred, with some choosing to mention illnesses or simply saying 'passed away after a long illness' or 'died peacefully.'

How soon after a death should an obituary be published?

An obituary is typically published within a week after death, often sooner to inform people of the funeral or memorial service dates. However, there is no strict timeline, and some families may choose to wait longer for various reasons.

Should an obituary mention charitable donations?

Yes, if the family desires, an obituary can suggest that readers make a charitable donation in lieu of flowers. Be sure to include the name and address of the charity to make it easier for those who wish to donate.

Can an obituary include a poem or quote?

Absolutely. Including a poem, quote, or a passage that was meaningful to the deceased or the family can personalize the obituary and make it a more touching tribute.

Is it okay to include humor in an obituary?

Yes, if it reflects the personality of the deceased and is done tastefully. Humor can celebrate a person's character and provide readers with a sense of the individual's spirit and approach to life.
