Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve an important role in informing friends, family, and community members about a person's passing. They also honor the deceased's life and accomplishments and can serve as a historical record for future generations.

Who writes obituaries?

Obituaries are commonly written by close family members or friends, but in some cases, they may be written by funeral home staff or by journalists in the case of notable individuals.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

An obituary usually includes the full name of the deceased, dates of birth and death, a summary of life achievements, information about the family, details of the funeral or memorial service, and sometimes a message of thanks or a request for donations to a charity.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary greatly. It can be a short notice of a few lines or a detailed account that spans several paragraphs, depending on the preferences of the family and the space available in the publication.

Are obituaries published before or after the funeral?

Obituaries are typically published shortly after a death to inform the community and provide details about the upcoming services, which usually take place before the funeral or memorial service.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a shorter, more factual statement of death and the ensuing service details, often paid for by the family. An obituary, on the other hand, is more detailed and comprehensive, typically including a biography and personal anecdotes.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

To submit an obituary, you should contact the newspaper or online platform where you wish it to appear. They will provide you with submission guidelines, costs, length restrictions, and deadlines.

Are there different types of obituaries for cultural or religious reasons?

Cultural and religious traditions can influence the content and format of an obituary. It's essential to consider these customs and incorporate appropriate references and language.

How soon after death should an obituary be published?
