Ruby Moore Todd Rigney - October 31, 1934 - December 27, 2023

Departed: 12/27/2023 (Waynesburg)
Obituary Preview: Ruby Moore Todd Rigney had her long awaited heavenly reunion on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, surrounded by her family singing songs of celebration. Born on Wednesday, October 31, 1934, Ruby was the youngest child of the late Allene and Paul Moore. She joined siblings Roscoe Moore, Dallas Moore, Virginia Carpenter, Eunice Pennington, Renetta Pryor, and Rosetta Phelps. Ruby was the last living member of her generation.
Ruby married Robert Todd on Saturday, April 15, 1950. Together, they had three sons; Mark (Patrice) Todd, Robert “Robbie” (Tonya) Todd II, and Paul (Bonnie) Todd. Robert died in 1968 and Ruby continued raising her boys who became devoted Christians, husbands, fathers, and businessmen, and the thing she was most proud of in her life.
She found love again when she married Leo Rigney on Saturday, July 22, 1978, and gained a step-daughter, Barbara (Roy) Guinn. After 35 beautiful years together, Leo passed away in 2014. Since Leo’s passing, Ruby filled her time with quilting, and she loved giving her quilts as gifts to her family.
Even after losing both her husbands, Ruby’s greatest heartbreak was the death of her son, Robbie, in 2020. Through that loss, her faith was unshakeable but longing for her heavenly home grew each day.
Anyone who knew Ruby knew that her relationship with the Lord was the most important thing to her. She faithfully served God for the majority of her life and never missed an opportunity to share her faith with others. She was the oldest living member of Waynesburg Pentecostal Church, where she served for over 50 years. Over the years, Ruby served as church clerk, sang in the choir, taught Sunday school, and was still cleaning and decorating at age 85. Her presence there will be deeply missed, and her impact will last for generations.
Along with her legacy of steadfast faith and strong work ethic, Ruby leaves behind 8 grandchildren; Jamie Todd, Jeremy Todd, Clint Bellinger, Leann Hines, Erica Miller, Caleb Todd, Nathan Todd, and Shilah Mahon. She is also survived by 16 great grandchildren, 3 step-granddaughters, 5 step-great-grandchildren, 2 step-great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitations will be at Waynesburg Pentecostal Church on Saturday, December 30, 2023, from 5-8PM, and on Sunday, December 31, 2023, from 12-2PM.
Services for Ruby Rigney will be held on Sunday, December 31, 2023, at 2:00PM, at Waynesburg Pentecostal Church, with Pastor Gerald Skaggs, Jr. and Nathan Todd officiating. The Funeral Service will be livestreamed on Ruby’s memorial page of the funeral home’s website.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice of a person's death, often including a brief biography and details about the funeral or memorial services. It's a way for the deceased's family to inform the community and honor the life of their loved one. Obituaries are typically published in newspapers and online memorial sites.

What is typically included in an obituary?

An obituary usually includes the full name of the deceased, date of birth, date of death, a summary of their life, accomplishments, surviving family members, details of the funeral or memorial service, and sometimes a photo. The tone and content can vary based on the family's wishes and the deceased's personality.

How long after a death is an obituary published?

An obituary is often published within a week of a person's death, allowing time for the family to make arrangements and gather necessary information. However, the exact timing can vary based on the publication deadlines and the family's preferences.

Who writes an obituary?

A family member, close friend, or the funeral home usually writes the obituary. In some cases, individuals write their own obituaries in advance, as part of their end-of-life planning.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost to publish an obituary varies widely depending on the publication's pricing structure, length of the obituary, and inclusion of images. Newspapers can charge by word, line, or column inch, with longer obituaries or those with images costing more. Online memorials are often less expensive or free.

Where can obituaries be found?

Obituaries can be found in local and national newspapers, on newspaper websites, at online obituary and memorial sites, and sometimes on social media pages or the websites of funeral homes.

Are obituaries different from death notices?

Yes, obituaries are more detailed and often include biographical information, anecdotes, and family details, while a death notice is typically a brief announcement of the death, including basic information about funeral or memorial service arrangements, without an extended biography.

Can an obituary be edited once it's published?

Editing an obituary after publication is usually difficult, particularly in print. However, online obituaries may be updated or corrected more easily, depending on the site's policies. It is important to proofread carefully before submission to minimize the need for edits.

What is the proper etiquette for reading an obituary?

When reading an obituary, do so with reverence and respect for the deceased and their family. It's a moment to acknowledge their life and their passing, and to consider attending the services if appropriate, or sending condolences to the family.

Is it necessary to include a photo in an obituary?

While not required, including a photo in an obituary can be a meaningful way to remind others of the individual or to share how they looked at a particular point in life. It can be particularly comforting to those who may not have seen the person in recent years.

Can anyone request an obituary be published?

Generally, the immediate family of the deceased or the executor of the estate is responsible for publishing the obituary. If you are a friend or extended family member wishing to publish an obituary, it is important to discuss this with the immediate family or executor first.

How do you submit an obituary to a newspaper?

To submit an obituary to a newspaper, contact the newspaper's obituary department for guidelines and pricing. You will need to provide the text of the obituary, any desired photos, and information about the person who is handling the obituary arrangements. Some newspapers also allow online submissions.

What should you not include in an obituary?

It's generally advised not to include overly personal details that could be misused, such as a home address, full birth date, or mother's maiden name to protect against identity theft. Avoid mentioning family disputes or other sensitive information that could cause discomfort or offense.

How can I find an old obituary?

Old obituaries can be found in newspaper archives, at libraries, through online databases, or by contacting the newspaper where the obituary was originally published. Many newspapers retain archives of past editions, and some libraries offer access to digital newspaper archives.

Is it acceptable to send condolences to the family after reading the obituary?

Yes, it is often appreciated when individuals express their condolences to the bereaved family. This can be done in a variety of forms, including sending a sympathy card, leaving a message on an online memorial, or offering support in person at the funeral service.

What if the family prefers donations to flowers?

If the family prefers donations to a designated charity or cause in lieu of flowers, this preference is usually stated in the obituary. It provides a way for mourners to honor the deceased by supporting a cause important to them.

Can an obituary be re-published in another newspaper?

Yes, an obituary can be re-published in another newspaper, especially if the deceased had connections to multiple communities or there is a wish to reach a broader audience. Additional publication fees will apply, and the obituary text may need to be adjusted according to the second newspaper's guidelines.

Should children or pets be mentioned in an obituary?

Children, grandchildren, and significant pets can be mentioned in an obituary as they are often considered an important part of the deceased's life. Including family members helps to paint a fuller picture of the life lived and the connections that were held dear.

How do you handle an obituary for someone with a complicated family situation?

For someone with a complicated family situation, focus on being inclusive and respectful. If there are sensitive dynamics, it may be prudent to use general terms such as "leaves behind a loving family" or list relatives without assigning relationships. Seek family consensus if possible.

Can an obituary be personal and unique?

Yes, an obituary can and should reflect the unique personality and life of the deceased. Including personal stories, favorite sayings, or characteristic details can make an obituary more meaningful and memorable for those who knew the person.

What if I need help writing an obituary?

If you need help writing an obituary, consider reaching out to a professional writer, the funeral home, or someone who knew the deceased well and is skilled with words. There are also resources and templates available online that can guide you through the process.
