Patricia A. Lawless - Unknown - April 22, 2022

Departed: 04/22/2022 (Barnegat)
Obituary Preview: Patricia Ann Lawless, a devoted leader in her family, community and church, passed away Friday, April 22nd after living 93 of the best years she could have ever imagined. Born in Yonkers, New York and raised in The Bronx, Pat was the youngest of four children, which is likely where she developed her world famous calm demeanor. Soon after she earned her degree from The College of New Rochelle, she met and fell in love with Michael Lawless. The two wed three years later in 1952. In 1957, Pat moved from her lifelong home to Middletown, NJ with Michael and their (then) four children where she quickly became an integral member of the Monmouth County community. Pat stayed at home and worked as a substitute teacher in local school districts while her children were young before joining the Monmouth County Parks Department in 1974. Though she retired in 1989, she never ceased to make the world around her a more beautiful place. Whether in Middletown, or after she moved with Michael to Barnegat in 1998, the Church was always close to Patricia’s heart. She volunteered at St. Mary’s New Monmouth extensively where she helped raise money by running the car raffles for 10 years. In Barnegat, she dedicated time to support the St. VIncent DePaul Society at St. Mary’s Church. After her husband Michael passed in 2001, Pat reconnected with an old friend, Gene Van Cleve, with whom she enjoyed countless meals, family gatherings and holidays. The two shared many great moments together, supporting each other late in life until Patricia passed away on Friday. They could be found together every Sunday at St. Mary’s Church followed by breakfast at the Barnegat Diner. In the Heritage Bay community, Pat once again became very involved, winning a 9-ball billiards championship and running the local bridge game for many years. If you played bridge in Heritage Bay between the years of 1998 and 2022, you likely got your butt beat by Pat at some point.
Patricia is survived by her children and their spouses Cathy and Bill Bischoff, Jean, Peter and Barbara Lawless, Timothy and Janice Lawless and MaryJane Lawless; grandchildren Teresa, Mary, Michael, Jack, Eric, Ann, Kevin, Amanda, Steven, Jude and Christopher; great grandchildren Colin, Owen, Sienna, Riley and Noah; and her best friend and companion until the end, Gene Van Cleve. She will be joining in heaven her Husband, Michael; Children, Michael and John, siblings George, Richard, William and her dog, Pepper. A wake will be held on Friday, April 29th at Barnegat Funeral Home, 841 W. Bay Ave., Barnegat from 4-7 p.m. The funeral service will take place Saturday, April 30th 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Barnegat followed by her burial at Mt. Olive Cemetery in Middletown. (www.BarnegatFH.com)
InI lieu of flowers the family asks that you make a donation in Patricia’s name to St. Vincent DePaul foundation at St Mary’s Parish.

Danny was a very loyal, caring son and brother, and also a loving uncle, nephew, cousin and friend to many. He was extremely smart, quick witted, analytical, hilariously funny, and very lovable. Danny was loved by everyone he met. His laugh and smile were infectious, and was known for his great sense of humor.

Music was a huge love of his. Danny loved old-school music from the 60s and 70s (Zep, Beatles, Floyd, Greatful Dead, in particular), blues, and many other types . He would love listening to music, talking about music, and studying it. Danny also loved sports especially at a young age, and then his love grew for skateboarding. He loved all animals especially dogs, as his heart would melt when seeing a puppy. Danny also loved reading, and most recently was reading the Bible. His number one love though, was spending time with his family and extended family. The memories he brought his family and friends will never be forgotten and cherished forever. RIP ❤️

Filomena A. Cianciotta - Unknown - April 06, 2022

Departed: 04/06/2022 (Barnegat)
Obituary Preview: Filomena A. Cianciotta passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 6, 2022 in Waretown, NJ.  She was 64 years old.  She leaves a huge hole in the hearts of her family and friends who were fortunate enough to have had her in their lives.
Filomena (affectionately known as Mena or Fil) was born in Bari, Italy.  As a youngster at the age of 4 years old, she with her family moved to America, settling in Jersey City, NJ.  It was here that she was raised and surrounded by extended Italian family members who also had roots in Bari.
Mena contributed to the family by working various jobs, one of which was with the USPS sorting mail by zip code.  This is mentioned because over time she memorized every ZIP code in the United States.  It goes without saying that Mena was highly intelligent while being very humble.  She attended Dickinson High School graduating as valedictorian.  She went on to St. Peter’s University and furthered her education by earning her CPA license.
During her early life she was devoted to family helping to raise some of her nieces and nephews.  This included giving them the right direction on how to dance, cook; she even was a hairdresser and barber for the kids. When it came to music she had the uncanny ability to know the name and lyrics of songs by the weirdest of groups … who of us ever heard of The Mary Jane Girls … well Mena did.
After graduation she launched a corporate career with the likes of J&J and Arthur Andersen.  She travelled the world as an internal  auditor and had an extremely positive influence on the CFO’s and CEO’S that she supported.
She eventually decided to “hang a shingle” and start her own CPA practice.  She dealt with private returns, corporate returns, payroll and other tax matters.
She was extremely diligent in supporting her clients as her attention to detail and doing the right thing was the hallmark.  The testimonies from her clients range from “She is a miracle worker” to “Her patience far exceeds that of the others in her field” to “Boy she saved me a boat load of money”.
After living in Northern New Jersey (Wayne and Ridgefield Park) she moved with her husband and longtime loving partner David Sobolowski to the Greenbrier Oceanaire community in Waretown, NJ.  This was in 2009.
It is in Greenbrier where she continued with her CPA practice while establishing new friendships.  It was here that she picked up the game of golf,  being part of the Woman’s League and bi-weekly scrambles.  Her recognition on the links include Most Improved Golfer … she was extremely proud of this.
Along with David, she was able to form a coterie of friends that could be considered very special in this day and age.  During her 13 years in Waretown, David and Mena continued to travel to Florida for the winter.  It was here that she spent holidays with many relatives and friends, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s.
These were times that she cherished.  Filomena has a loving family and they embraced the fact that her beautiful smile, love of music, good food and endless intelligent conversation would grace their dinner tables for the holidays.
She leaves her siblings:  Lucy Paladino, Nina Viganola, Frank Cianciotta, Bart Cianciotta, Maria Cianciotta and Joe Cianciotta.  She has 4 grandchildren, 16 nieces and nephews and numerous great-nieces and nephews.
Filomena represented the good that we all need every day in our lives. She was one of a select few who could actually rise to meet challenges of life with a smile. We are proud to have been able to call Filomena  our sister, aunt, friend, CPA and soulmate. Her spirit is one that will never leave us.
A private memorial service will be held on April 30, 2022.  The details on the “Celebration of Life” will be sent out in the future.

Mary J. Dwyer - Unknown - April 03, 2022

Departed: 04/03/2022 (Barnegat)
Obituary Preview: Mary Dwyer, 82 of Barnegat NJ, passed away following a long and courageous battle with Dementia on Sunday, April 3, 2022. Born in Avoca, PA in 1939, she would later marry and move to Edison, NJ before moving to Barnegat, NJ following her retirement from Verizon. Mary will forever be remembered for the unwavering love and support she always provided her family as well as her timely sense of humor.
Whether it was hosting the holidays every year with her famous apple pie or organizing the annual family beach vacation with “spy glasses” in tow, Mary loved nothing more than spending time with her family. She adored her two grandchildren, who she often saw weekly if not daily as they grew up. She was relentlessly supportive of their sports and academics, subjecting herself to over 2 decades of attending soccer games and later helping them both through college. One constant with Mary was she always selflessly put the needs of others above her own to ensure the ones closest to her were happy.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, John Timlin and Helen Hines, and by her loving husband of 51 years Thomas “Unky” Dwyer. She leaves to cherish her memory her two daughters Colleen Whittaker  and Lisa Hanley, their husbands James Whittaker and Kevin Hanley, her brother Joe Timlin and his wife Sue, her sister Cathy (Peaches) Schiavo, and her two dearly loved grandchildren Ryan and Kelsey Whittaker. We love and miss you so much Mary, Mom, and Grandma. We will forever carry your memory in our hearts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice of someone's death, typically published in a newspaper or online, that often includes a brief biography of the deceased, details about the funeral or memorial service, and information about the surviving family members. It serves as a way to inform the community of the person's passing and to celebrate and honor their life.

Is an obituary the same as a death notice?

No, an obituary is not the same as a death notice. While both announce a person's death, a death notice is a paid announcement that is brief and often limited to the basic facts surrounding someone's death, such as their name, age, and funeral service details. An obituary is longer and includes detailed biographical information and personal stories or achievements.

Who writes an obituary?

An obituary is often written by a close family member or friend, but it can also be prepared by a funeral director or a staff member at a newspaper. Occasionally, individuals pre-write their obituaries to ensure that their life story is told the way they wish.

How long after a death is an obituary published?

The timing for publishing an obituary can vary. In some cases, the obituary is published within a few days of the death to inform the community and announce any upcoming services. In other situations, it could take longer, especially if the family needs more time to gather information or prepare the text.

What information is included in an obituary?

An obituary typically includes the deceased's full name, age, date of birth, and date and place of death. It may also include details about their life such as education, career, hobbies, and personal achievements, as well as surviving family members, information on the funeral or memorial service, and an invitation to make a donation to a specified charity if desired.

Is it necessary to publish an obituary?

While it is not a legal requirement to publish an obituary, many people choose to do so as a way to honor the deceased and to inform friends, family members, and the community of the passing.

How do I write a good obituary?

To write a good obituary, gather all key facts about the deceased’s life, including birth, family, education, career, and special interests. Be honest and focus on celebrating the life of your loved one with respect and dignity. Be sure to include details about any services and a meaningful sentiment that reflects the person’s legacy.

Where are obituaries published?

Obituaries are commonly published in local newspapers, on funeral home websites, and on dedicated online obituary websites. Sometimes they are also shared in religious newsletters, community bulletins, or organizational publications associated with the deceased.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, length, and region. Newspapers typically charge by line, word, or column inch, while online publications may offer free or flat-rate options.

Can I include a photograph with an obituary?

Yes, photographs are commonly included with obituaries, particularly in online formats and print newspapers, although including a photo may increase the cost of the obituary.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or website?

To submit an obituary, contact the publication or website for their guidelines. Most newspapers or online platforms have a submission process that may include filling out a form and providing the written content along with any desired photographs.

Can an obituary be edited after it's been published?

Once an obituary has been published in print, it cannot typically be edited. However, online obituaries may offer the flexibility to make changes or updates. Check with the publication or website regarding their policy on edits.

Is it appropriate to mention the cause of death in an obituary?

It is a personal choice whether to include the cause of death. Some families choose to share this detail, especially if they feel it may help others or honor the deceased’s battle with an illness. Others may prefer to keep that information private.

What if I can't afford to publish an obituary?

For those who cannot afford the costs associated with publishing an obituary, consider free alternatives such as social media, community bulletin boards, or utilizing low-cost or free services offered by some funeral homes or online platforms.

How can I ensure the obituary reaches people who knew the deceased?

To ensure the obituary reaches people who knew the deceased, publish it in the local newspaper and share it online, especially on social media platforms. Informing church groups, clubs, or any associations the deceased was a part of is also a good idea.

What is a eulogy, and how does it differ from an obituary?

A eulogy is a speech given during a funeral or memorial service that offers a tribute to the deceased, celebrating their life and sharing personal stories and anecdotes. It is generally more personal and spoken, while an obituary is a written announcement of death and summary of life meant for public notice.

How do I handle an unexpected or tragic death in the obituary?

When handling an unexpected or tragic death in the obituary, it’s important to focus on the life lived rather than the circumstances of the death. It's okay to acknowledge the tragedy but center the piece on who the person was and the impact they had on the world.

Should I mention charitable donations in the obituary?

If the deceased or the family wishes to have donations made to a charity in lieu of flowers, this can be mentioned in the obituary. Provide the name of the charity and any necessary contact information or instructions for making a donation.

Can anyone submit an obituary, or does it have to be a family member?

While obituaries are typically submitted by family members, anyone close to the deceased, such as a close friend or legal representative, can write and submit an obituary if they have the relevant information and the family's permission.

How can I write a sensitive obituary for someone who had a difficult life?

Writing an obituary for someone who had a difficult life requires sensitivity and care. Focus on the positive aspects of their life, no matter how small, and on the value of the person despite any troubles they faced. It's important to show compassion and respect for the individual's unique journey.

Can I share personal anecdotes in the obituary?

Absolutely. Sharing personal anecdotes can add a touch of warmth and individuality to an obituary, giving readers a glimpse into the personality and life of the deceased. However, make sure these stories respect the privacy and wishes of the family and remain appropriate for a broad audience.
