Jane Marie Welch - January 12, 1938 - December 16, 2023

Departed: 12/16/2023 (Pittsford)
Obituary Preview: Jane Marie Welch
Pittsford- Jane Marie Welch, 85, of Pittsford passed away peacefully on Saturday December 16th at her home, surrounded by her loved ones.
Jane was born January 12th, 1938, in Haverhill NH, the daughter of Arthur and Hazel (Dunlap) Burt and is survived by her brothers Russell and Randall of NH. Her childhood was spent in Bath, NH and she later graduated from Woodsville High School in 1956.
On May 9th, 1959, she married the love of her life Robert Welch, and they would go on to spend 62 years devoted to each other. Jane began her career in Washington D.C working for the U.S Government before moving back to Woodstock, VT to start her family. Jane is survived by her children, daughter Michelle, and son Timothy and his wife Gail. After 30 years of service to the Department of Social Security, Jane and her husband retired. Following retirement, Jane and Bob moved to Pittsford, VT to be closer to their grandchildren. Though she may have retired she certainly didn’t rest, dedicating her days to her family, community, and church. She gave selflessly of her time and energy to others and truly lived a life of service. Jane was an active member of the Pittsford Congregational Church; she served her community through her time at the Pittsford Food Shelf. She also cared deeply about preserving the history of her town and served as the Secretary of the Pittsford Historical Society for many years and was a member of her local Lion’s Club.
However, her most important roles were with her family. Jane was devoted wife, a caring mom, a kind sister, and loving grandmother to her four grandchildren: Matthew Welch, Gabrielle Rainville and her husband Kyle Rainville, Annmarie Welch and her husband Jackson McClain, Monica Welch, and her partner Ivan Sweet. Jane also was a beloved great-grandmother to Killian Welch Cicio who brought her endless joy, and a brand-new great-granddaughter Violet.
Jane was many things to many people but ultimately, she was Bob’s lifelong partner. The love and commitment expressed throughout their marriage is a symbol of true dedication to one another. Jane’s life and love with Bob was beautiful, full of adventures from the beaches of Maine to the volcanoes of Hawaii and everything in between.
Towards the end of her life Jane received the love she put out into the world and was fiercely cared for by her soulmate before his passing in 2022, by her children, and grandchildren. Her family would like to extend their thanks to the exceptional team of LNA’s, nurses, and hospice staff who supported her.
Jane lived her life to the absolute fullest and gave everything her all. She was smart, generous, stubborn, and steadfast in her passions. She loved to spend time in her flower garden, and bake. She was specifically known for her incredible baked ham and potato salad recipes. Bob’s running joke was that he married Jane because she could make a ham as good as his mother did.
She is deeply missed by her family, but they are comforted knowing she has been reunited with her very best friend, Bob.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday ,January 27, 2024 at the Pittsford Congregational Church.

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written announcement of a person's death, often including a brief biography of the deceased, details about the funeral or memorial services, and information about the surviving family members. It is traditionally published in newspapers and online platforms as a way to inform the community and honor the memory of the departed.

Who writes obituaries?

Obituaries are commonly written by close family members, friends, or the funeral home handling the arrangements. In some cases, individuals who have terminal illnesses may write their own obituaries in advance, providing a personal touch to their final farewell.

What should be included in an obituary?

An obituary should ideally include the full name of the deceased, dates of birth and death, significant life milestones, information about the funeral or memorial service, and names of close family members. Additionally, one may choose to include special memories, achievements, and messages of gratitude or acknowledgment.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

To submit an obituary to a newspaper, you should first contact the publication to determine their submission guidelines, deadlines, and fees. Many newspapers offer online forms for submissions. You will typically need to provide the written obituary, the deceased person's details, and your contact information.

Is there a standard length for an obituary?

There is no standard length for an obituary. It can range from a few sentences to several paragraphs based on the amount of information shared and the newspaper or online platform's policies. Keep in mind that some publications may charge by word count or space.

Can an obituary be published online?

Yes, obituaries can be published online on various platforms, including social media, dedicated memorial websites, and the online versions of newspapers. Online obituaries allow for wider sharing and can be accompanied by digital photo albums or tribute videos.

How soon after a death should an obituary be published?

An obituary is typically published within a few days to a week after a person's death. This timeframe allows for the obituary to serve its purpose in notifying friends and the broader community in time for any upcoming funeral or memorial services.

Can an obituary be edited after publication?

In print formats, once an obituary is published, it cannot be edited. However, online obituaries often offer the possibility of editing after publication to correct errors or add information. It is best to proofread carefully before submitting to avoid any inaccuracies.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

An obituary is a detailed announcement and tribute that includes biographical information, family details, and service times. A death notice is a shorter, more formal announcement focused on the death and service information, typically with no biography or personal anecdotes.

Is it appropriate to mention the cause of death in an obituary?

Whether to mention the cause of death is a personal choice. Some families prefer to keep this detail private, while others may share it to bring awareness to certain issues or illnesses. It is entirely up to the family and the wishes of the deceased.

How are obituaries used to research family history?

Obituaries are valuable resources for genealogists and people researching their family history. They provide names of family members, life stories, and historical context that can help build a family tree and understand ancestors' lives.

What etiquette should be followed when writing an obituary?

When writing an obituary, one should be respectful, factual, and considerate of the family's privacy. Avoid overly dramatic language, and focus on celebrating the life of the deceased while providing necessary information for those who may wish to attend services.

Should I include a photo with the obituary?

Including a photo with an obituary is a personal choice. A recent photograph or a picture that the deceased was particularly fond of can serve as a touching tribute and can help people who knew the person in different stages of life to recognize them.

Do obituaries have to be solemn or can they be humorous?

The tone of an obituary should reflect the spirit of the deceased. While many obituaries are solemn and respectful, some families opt for a lighter or humorous tone, especially if it aligns with the personality or wishes of the person who has passed away.

How do I handle writing an obituary for someone who was estranged from the family?

Writing an obituary for someone estranged can be challenging. It's important to remain respectful and focus on the person's life rather than the estrangement. Acknowledge the person's contributions and important relationships, without dwelling on family conflicts.

Can I publish an obituary for a pet?

Yes, publishing an obituary for a pet is increasingly common as many people consider pets as members of the family. Some newspapers and online memorial sites cater to pet obituaries, allowing owners to celebrate their companions' lives and share their loss with others.

Is it necessary to include a list of survivors in an obituary?

While it is customary to include a list of immediate family survivors, it is not an absolute requirement. The level of detail provided can vary according to the family's preference and the willingness to disclose family information publicly.

What cultural considerations should be taken into account when writing an obituary?

Cultural considerations should definitely be taken into account as practices and traditions around death vary greatly among cultures. It's important to respect these practices when writing an obituary, which may include mentioning specific rites or customs, or adhering to cultural norms related to mentioning the deceased.

Should a request for charitable donations be included in an obituary?

If the family or the deceased wishes to direct well-wishers to contribute to a cause or charity in lieu of flowers, it can be included in the obituary. This is often seen as a way to honor the deceased's values or contribute to a meaningful legacy.

What should not be included in an obituary?

An obituary should not include sensitive personal information that could put the family at risk, such as home addresses or financial details. Additionally, contentious issues or negative aspects of the person's life that are not relevant to the public announcement should be omitted out of respect for the deceased and the family.

How can I ensure the obituary honors the deceased accurately?

To ensure an obituary honors the deceased accurately, involve family members and friends in the writing process to collect diverse memories and perspectives. Fact-check dates and details, and strive to capture the essence of the person's life in a respectful and truthful manner that reflects their values and legacy.
