Jonnie Warner - October 20, 1948 - March 03, 2024

Departed: 03/03/2024 (Greenup)
Obituary Preview: It is with great sadness and grief that we announce the death of a kind and beautiful woman, Jonnie Lynn Matteson Warner.
A memorial visitation will be held on Wednesday March 6, 2024, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Barkley Funeral Chapel in Greenup.
On October 20, 1948, Jonnie came into this world and changed it forever.  She was born to John T Matteson and Rosemary Stockbarger Matteson.  She grew up in a household that included her brother, Scott (Sheila) Matteson and sister, Lorna (Tim) Marshall.  One evening, she met Carl “Jump” Warner and declared to her friends later that night, “I wouldn’t mind having his boots under my bed in the morning” Long story, short they were married in May of 1968. She and Jump had two children, Jennifer Wellbaum (and her husband Gary) and Jason  Warner (and his wife Amy). She was a stay-at-home mom when they were little and also a babysitter for other lucky kiddos. She worked at Ettelbrick’s Shoe Factory, ER Moore and the Cumberland Rehab and Nursing Home during her later working career.
She enjoyed several adventures during her life and always lived her life in harmony with those around her who she loved deeply. She and Jump worked alongside her parents and siblings at the Salad Bowl in Greenup, cooking, serving, cleaning, and making the lives of those around her better.
Some will remember fondly the Taco Stand at the Cumberland County Fairgrounds back when tacos were not standard weeknight dinner fare. Through this stand she proudly carried on the tradition of serving the public amazing food like her grandparents and parents before her.
Her grandchildren: Finn Wellbaum, Hannah Wellbaum, Jacob Warner, and Ashlynn Warner were the pride and joy of her life.  She was the best grandmother any child could wish for, and they will all miss her horribly. She always had snacks, crafts, activities, toys, hugs and “I love you” for each of them.  She was always ready to entertain, telling stories and subjecting herself to many makeovers, all for the joy of her grandkids. Both Finn and Hannah lived with her while they attended college, and she opened her home and her heart during their stays. She would get to school an hour early just to be first in the pickup line for Jacob and Ashlynn once she learned they loved to be picked up first, always coming with a snack and a newspaper. Her favorite job was working as a volunteer at Sacred Heart during Jacob and Ashlynn’s time there. She continued to show up for each and every sporting event and major activity throughout all of their years at school. During each and every game, she always made sure to tell everyone, with a grin on her face, that any sporty talents came from her.  She was always the number one supporter.
Throughout her years, she and Jump enjoyed traveling with their family. They spent many years traveling to and from Canada each summer in order to spend time making memories. Always the master fishermen, she and Jump were always enthusiastic to help both catching and cooking any catches from the day. In their time off the lake, they took great pride in spending time with their grandkids, doing any and everything that was asked of them, if only to make Finn and Hannah smile. After Jump had passed, Jonnie continued to travel with her family, always in pursuit of making memories. Jonnie traveled by train to visit her brother, Scott, in Virginia and toured all the sights she could take in. She traveled to Niagara Falls with Jason and his family, as well as adding a flight to her list of firsts in order to join her grandchildren on a Disney cruise. Even when enjoying her vacation, she wanted nothing more than to embrace life with her family.
She continuously poured herself into those she loved and loved her in laws as her own children. She was always ready to help, not only her loved ones, but anyone who would find themselves in need. While she will continue to live on through her family, she will also live on in each and every person she was able to help throughout her life.
In Lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Sacred Heart School in Effingham. Online condolences can be expressed at www.barkleyfuneralchapels.com.

Mandy held a special place in everyone’s heart, to know her was to love her! She was her daddy’s little girl, her mom’s bestie, and grandma Rosemary’s sidekick. If you knew Amanda, you loved her, you laughed with her, you were loud with her but most of all YOU were LOVED by her!
Memorials can be made to the Amanda Charters Memorial Account set up at First Neighbor Bank. Donations can be made at any FNB branch. Online condolences can be expressed at www.barkleyfuneralchapels.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the purpose of an obituary?

An obituary serves as a notice of someone's death, typically published in newspapers and online. Its purpose is to inform the public of the passing and to honor the life of the deceased. It often includes a brief summary of their life achievements, family members, significant experiences, and information about the funeral or memorial services.

Who is responsible for writing an obituary?

Typically, a close family member or friend of the deceased will write the obituary, with assistance from a funeral director if needed. Sometimes, an individual may have prepared their own obituary before passing away.

What is typically included in an obituary?

An obituary commonly includes the full name of the deceased, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, names of close surviving relatives, a brief account of their life story, their educational and professional history, achievements, and details about the funeral service or memorial arrangements.

How long after a death is an obituary published?

The timing can vary, but an obituary is usually published within a few days after death to allow friends and acquaintances to be notified in time to attend the funeral or memorial services.

Is there a standard obituary format?

While there is no strict format, most obituaries follow a familiar structure: announcement of death, biographical sketch, list of surviving family members, details of the funeral service, and sometimes a special message or quote. Some people opt for more creative or personalized formats.

How do you decide what to include in an obituary?

Deciding what to include involves reflecting on what was important to the deceased and what could serve the needs of the family and friends in mourning. Include significant life events, relationships, and achievements that honor the person's memory and inform the community of their passing.

Where should an obituary be published?

An obituary should be published in local newspapers where the deceased resided and had connections, and it can also be published online through social media or on memorial websites. This increases the chances of reaching those who might want to know about the death and the arrangements.

Are funeral details necessary in an obituary?

While not mandatory, providing funeral details such as the date, time, and location can be helpful for community members who wish to pay their respects. For those concerned with privacy or logistics, these details could be omitted or communicated through more personal channels.

What if I cannot afford to publish an obituary in a newspaper?

If the cost of publishing in a newspaper is too high, consider free or low-cost alternatives such as online obituaries on social media, community noticeboards, church bulletins, or through the funeral home's website.

Can I mention the cause of death in an obituary?

The mention of the cause of death is entirely at the discretion of the family. While some feel it provides closure and context, others may wish to keep it private. Every situation is unique, so consider what feels appropriate for your circumstances.

Is it necessary to include a photograph with an obituary?

Including a photograph can make the obituary more personal and memorable, but it isn't absolutely necessary. Choose a photo that best reflects the individual if you decide to include one.

How can I make an obituary more personal?

To make an obituary more personal, include anecdotes, favorite sayings, hobbies, and personality traits of the deceased. You could also mention their life philosophies or advice they often gave, which paints a more vivid picture for readers.

Should I list the deceased's age in the obituary?

Listing the age provides context about the stage of life the person was in at the time of their passing. However, if this is sensitive information, it is not obligatory to include it.

Is it appropriate to ask for donations in an obituary?

Yes, it is common to ask for donations in lieu of flowers to support a cause that was important to the deceased or to help the family with funeral expenses or other costs. Be sure to include the details of where and how to donate.

How do I acknowledge relatives who have predeceased the person?

To acknowledge relatives who have predeceased the individual, you can include a phrase such as "preceded in death by" followed by a list of names. This honors the connection between the deceased and their loved ones who passed before them.

Can I write my own obituary ahead of time?

Yes, writing your own obituary is a way to ensure your life is celebrated and remembered in the way that you want. It can also relieve your loved ones of the burden of writing it after your passing.

How do I handle the deceased's social media accounts?

Each social media platform has its own policies regarding the accounts of deceased individuals. You can typically contact the platform's support team to notify them of the death and to learn about the options, such as memorializing or closing the account.

There are no legal requirements for publishing an obituary. It’s a personal choice meant to inform the community and to celebrate the life of the deceased. However, some newspapers may have specific guidelines or requirements for submission.

Can the family choose to not publish an obituary?

Absolutely, the decision to publish an obituary is a personal one. There are no legal obligations to publish, and some families may choose to keep the passing private or to communicate the news in a more intimate way.

What should I do if I find a factual error in an obituary?

If you find a factual error in an obituary, you should contact the publication or funeral home responsible for the obituary as soon as possible. They can assist in making corrections and republishing if necessary.

How do obituaries differ from death notices and eulogies?

Death notices are brief announcements of death and funeral details without biographical information, whereas obituaries are longer, include life stories and achievements. Eulogies are speeches given at a service to pay tribute to the deceased and are often more personal and anecdotal.
