Obituary Preview: On April 17, 2024, Marie Smith Moore 92, of Columbus, Indiana passed to be with her Lord in Heaven.
Marie Moore was born on January 18, 1932, in Indianapolis, and was the daughter of Glenn Smith and Leota Cox Smith.
Marie graduated in 1949 from Converse High School and went on to attend Earlham College. While in college, she was a majorette. During her time at Earlham, she met Dudley Moore, whom she later married. She graduated in 1953 with a degree in elementary education.
Dudley and Marie married on June 12, 1954. They lived their early married life at Camp LeJeune, where Marie taught kindergarten. After Camp LeJeune, they spent two years serving together at The Whites Institute in Wabash, Indiana. They then moved to Dearborn, MI, for a few years where Marie completed her Masters in Education at Eastern Michigan University. Dudley’s involvement in Cummins Engine Company brought them to Columbus. Shortly after moving, Marie started teaching at L.C. Schmitt elementary school. She adored her students, room parents, student teachers, and coworkers. It was a common occurrence for Marie to have past students approach her and share fond memories of being in her classroom. This brought her much joy. In 1984, Marie was the recipient of the Edna V. Folger Outstanding Teacher Award. She taught at various levels including kindergarten, first, and second grades. Marie was a revered educator and retired after spending 37 years teaching in the classroom.
Highly involved in her community, Marie served in the North Christian Church choir and as a Deaconess. She spent time volunteering at First Call for Help. In later years, she was a long-time member of Westside Community Church and involved in Bible Study. Her church family was very important to her and very gracious to her over the years. She was an active alumni member of Earlham College and served on their alumni council.
Marie and Dudley raised three daughters in Columbus before spending 20 years living at Grandview Lake. While living at Grandview Lake, Marie was an avid gardener and was involved in the Garden Club. She loved the lake, boating, and teaching her grandchildren how to fish. In retirement, she enjoyed wintering in Fort Myers, FL. She loved her community at Boardwalk Caper and Chapel By The Sea. She and Dudley were active playing tennis together.
She spent the last four years at Traditions in Columbus. We want her Traditions family of caregivers to know how much they meant to her and her family. We are forever grateful for the loving care you showed her.
Marie’s role as a loving mother, nana, and “great nana” gave her deep happiness and pride. Those who knew her will remember her by her endless joy, smile, and vibrant personality.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Richard White, her sister Betty Dawson, and her husband of 65 years, Dudley Moore. Marie is survived by daughter, Nancy Haehl (John); daughter, Diane Moore (Wade Day); and daughter, Jennifer Zeller (Rick), all of Columbus; eight grandchildren, Jena, Katherine, Betsy, Brooke, Martha, Rick Jr., Matthew, Alexa; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Elizabeth H. Monette - March 28, 1943 - April 16, 2024

Departed: 04/16/2024 (Columbus)
Obituary Preview: Elizabeth Hower Monette, 81, a resident of Columbus, passed away at 8:35 a.m. Tuesday, April 16, 2024, at home surrounded by her family.
Elizabeth was born March 28, 1943, in South Bend, Indiana, the daughter of Francis A. and Marion Phillips Turfler.
Survivors include her husband of over 56 years, William; son, Allen (Sarah) Monette of Madison, Wisconsin; daughter, Ruth (Melissa) Monette of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; one granddaughter; sisters, Anna Bowers, Alice Anderson, both of Mishawaka, Katherine (Michael) Marschall of Granger; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Jane Turfler, and brother Robert Turfler.
Elizabeth lived her life from a deep, pragmatic Christian faith, a passion for reading and books, with a slightly dark sense of humor and a willingness to try to love others as Christ loved them.
Connected through their families’ shared church membership, she married Bill Monette in July of 1967. Bill’s work took them to Tucson, AZ; Indianapolis, IN; Chicago, IL; Dayton, OH; and eventually to Columbus, IN where they have lived for nearly 35 years.
Elizabeth worked as either a children’s librarian or a reference librarian in most of those communities. She nurtured relationships with co-workers and patrons, especially those “library regulars” who found in her a willing listener and sometimes friend. With the Bartholomew Public Library, she worked the reference desk for about 20 years. Long before we could “google” the answer to random wonderings, Elizabeth would take an idle query from a conversation and come back, sometimes days later, with the answer.
Her love of reading and books inspired her retirement “work” as a volunteer Book Buddy at Schmidt School. She was a faithful volunteer at St Paul’s Episcopal Church, serving in pastoral care ministries, prayer chains, and Christian formation. She was a member of the Daughters of the King, a lay religious order of the Episcopal Church, and active on the local, diocese and national levels. She was active with the Seymour chapter of PFLAG (before there was a Columbus chapter) and with ICC supporting the LGBT community.
Elizabeth knew the names of every tree, flower, plant, and animal in her yard. She was an avid crafter – sewing many of her own clothes and swearing like a sailor while ripping out most knitting projects at least once. Sharing her crafting skills with her granddaughter was a particular pleasure. She remained a voracious reader and always sent books as gifts, but only after she’d read them first. She treasured time with her adult children of whom she was deeply proud.
In keeping with the family’s request, cremation will take place and a celebration of life honoring Elizabeth will be held Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at 2:00 PM, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 2651 California Street, with Priest-in-Charge Aelred Bernard Dean officiating.
Inurnment will take place at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Columbarium.
Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church or Columbus Regional Health Cancer Center.
Online condolences and special memories may be shared with the Monette family at barkesweaverglick.com.
Caring and professional service to Elizabeth’s family is being provided by Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home.

Mrs. June M. Vinson - February 02, 1940 - April 09, 2024

Departed: 04/09/2024 (Columbus)
Obituary Preview: June M. Vinson, a longtime resident of Columbus, passed from this life at age 84, Tuesday, April 9, 2024, at Columbus Regional Hospital.
First in her heart was June’s family. Her greatest joys came from time spent with them: creating occasions to make each feel special, always being there to avidly cheer them on, caring for the needs of each and offering sound advice. June’s wings of love encircled those she held most dear: her children, husband, grandchildren, brother, niece, and parents (Frank and June Deli, both predeceased). June’s many friends know she was always happy to share her pride in the achievements of each.
With June, no one was a stranger. Her magnetic personality, interest in people and inquiring mind brought her friends wherever she went. Among her numerous activities outside the home was Welcome Wagon hostess; it could be said she knew almost everyone in Columbus, having personally welcomed newcomers to the community and celebrated their new babies.
When not visiting their grandchildren in Chicago and New York or her niece in Chicago, June and John traveled throughout America and the world, journeying together through six continents.
June was born and spent her formative years in Chicago. Her family relocated to Columbus in the early 1950’s in time for her to enter the newly constructed Columbus Senior High School, quickly becoming an integral part of student life and the wider community.
Her life will be cherished by her husband of 57 years, John; children, Debra Cahill of Columbus and Michael (Ann Ryan) Frohman of Delray Beach, Florida; grandchildren, Timothy and Gregory Cahill, Sarah Frohman Burlison and Katie Frohman; brother, Steven (Anne) Deli of Fisher Island, Florida; and her niece, Margaret Deli, of Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Family and friends are invited Saturday, April 13, 2024, to a gathering from 2:00-3:30 p.m., including Remembrances in Celebration of June’s Life at 3:00 p.m., at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street.
