Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a notice that announces the death of a person, typically published in a newspaper or online. It serves to inform the community of the person’s passing and to celebrate their life. An obituary often includes biographical details, information about the person’s family, significant achievements, and details about the funeral or memorial services.

Who usually writes an obituary?

Obituaries are often written by close family members or friends, but sometimes they are written by obituary writers at newspapers or funeral homes. In some cases, individuals may even write their own obituaries ahead of time as part of their end-of-life planning.

What should be included in an obituary?

An obituary should include the full name of the deceased, their age, place of residence, and the date of their death. Often, it will also contain a brief summary of their life, including career accomplishments, hobbies, or passions, as well as information about surviving family members. Additionally, details about any public funeral or memorial services should be mentioned, if applicable.

Are obituaries published for free?

Many newspapers charge a fee to publish an obituary, as they are considered paid advertisements. The cost can vary depending on the length of the obituary and the publication's circulation. Some online platforms or smaller community papers may offer free or lower-cost options.

Can anyone submit an obituary?

Generally, newspapers and online obituary platforms allow submissions from family members or individuals acting on behalf of the deceased's family, such as a funeral director. Specific submission policies can vary between publications.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary widely. Some obituaries are brief, providing only essential details, while others are more detailed and can run several hundred words long. The length may be determined by the cost associated with the word count in a newspaper, or the family's desire to include comprehensive information about the deceased's life and legacy.

Is there a standard format for writing an obituary?

There is no one-size-fits-all format for obituaries, but many follow a similar structure: starting with the announcement of death, followed by biographical details, family information, service details, and sometimes a special message or poem. However, the format can be personalized to reflect the spirit of the individual who has passed.

What's the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

An obituary is typically a more detailed account of a person's life and legacy, often including biographical details and personal stories. A death notice, on the other hand, is generally shorter and sticks to the basic facts of the death, such as the name, age, date of death, and any service information.

Should I include a photo with an obituary?

Including a photo with an obituary can provide a familiar face to the name and serve as a visual tribute to the individual. It is not a requirement but can be a comforting addition for those who knew the person.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or website?

To submit an obituary to a newspaper or a website, you will need to contact the publication directly to learn about their submission guidelines, deadlines, and prices. Many newspapers have online forms or email addresses designated for obituary submissions.

Can I include personal anecdotes or stories in an obituary?

Yes, personal anecdotes and stories can be included in an obituary to reflect the unique personality and life of the deceased. These personal touches often make the obituary more engaging and meaningful for readers who knew the person.

Is it necessary to list causes of death in an obituary?

Listing the cause of death in an obituary is not necessary and is completely at the discretion of the family. Some may choose to include this information for transparency or to raise awareness about certain health conditions, while others may prefer to keep it private.

Can obituaries be written for pets?

Yes, obituaries can be written for pets. Many pet owners consider their pets to be family members and choose to publish obituaries to celebrate their companionship and to acknowledge their grief publicly.

What if there are errors in an obituary that's already been published?

If you discover errors in an obituary after it has been published, contact the newspaper or website immediately to discuss possible corrections or retractions. Most publications will be understanding and cooperative in correcting significant factual errors.

Do obituaries have to be serious or can they be humorous?

The tone of an obituary can vary greatly and does not have to be strictly serious. Humorous anecdotes or light-hearted language may be used if it suits the personality of the deceased and is in line with what the family feels is appropriate.

How quickly should an obituary be published after a death?

An obituary is typically published within a week of a person’s death to provide timely information about any upcoming services or memorials. However, the timing can vary based on the family's wishes, the publication's deadlines, and the necessary preparations for the services.

Does an obituary need to be approved by the next of kin?

While not always a formal requirement, it is common courtesy and best practice to have the obituary reviewed and approved by the next of kin or closest family members to ensure accuracy and respect for the deceased's memory.

Can I write an obituary for someone who died a long time ago?

Yes, you can write an obituary for someone who died a long time ago. Sometimes, families may not have had the opportunity to publish an obituary at the time of the death or wish to honor the deceased on a significant anniversary of their passing.

What are some considerations when writing a child's obituary?

When writing a child's obituary, it's important to handle the subject with extra sensitivity and care. Often, these obituaries focus on the child’s personality, love, and joy they brought into the world, rather than achievements, and may include messages about the impact they had on their family and community.

How can I ensure that an obituary is respectful and appropriate?

To ensure that an obituary is respectful and appropriate, focus on celebrating the life lived rather than just announcing the death. Be thoughtful about the language you use, consider the feelings of all family members and friends, and perhaps have someone close to the deceased review it before publication.

Are there resources available for writing an obituary?

Yes, there are numerous resources available for writing an obituary, including templates, guidelines provided by funeral homes or newspaper websites, and professional obituary writing services. These can provide a helpful starting point, especially during a time of grief.
