Taylor Marie Agius - December 26, 2000 - April 13, 2024

Departed: 04/13/2024 (Alpena)
Obituary Preview: Taylor Marie Agius, 23, passed away April 13, 2024, due to an automobile accident in Davisburg. She was born December 26, 2000, to Philip and Pamela (Coddington) Agius.
Taylor attended Alpena Public Schools and graduated Magna Cum Laude with honors from Alpena High School in 2019. After high school she attended Northern Michigan University, receiving her bachelor’s degree in nursing, once again attaining Magna Cum Laude status and the Award of Merit for outstanding academic achievement. After taking the summer off, she began her short career at Detroit Children’s Hospital where she worked in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit beginning in September of 2023. Taylor’s work in the “PICU” was exemplary, noted by her shift nurses and supervisors almost immediately. Helping others was instinctive and she always took time when someone was in need.
Taylor is survived by her parents, Pamela and Philip Agius, her brother Mitchell and his girlfriend Anna Brooks, her grandmother Eleanor Coddington, and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Taylor had a special relationship with her Grandmother Barbara Agius who preceded her in death in 2021, grandfathers Frank Agius and Dr. Donald Coddington.
Most people will remember Taylor’s infectious smile and amazing voice; when her brother Mitchell began playing hockey for Alpena High School, Taylor enjoyed opening the night by singing the National Anthem. Music was a huge part of her life; she danced at 4-D Second Street Dance Company, played guitar, and violin. Her love for adventure and the outdoors was always evident, whether it was hiking in the mountains or jumping out of an airplane. She bagged her first mule deer in Colorado in November of 2023. Taylor prided herself on being proficient with firearms, had her CPL and could outshoot most (including her dad and Mitchell) whether it was with a shotgun, rifle or pistol. Her passion for downhill skiing took her to Whitefish, Montana, Whistler in Vancouver, and Wolf Creek in Colorado.
Her passing leaves a huge hole in all the lives she touched, especially her family, friends and coworkers.

Bruce Grant Stevens - August 31, 1932 - April 11, 2024

Departed: 04/11/2024 (Alpena)
Obituary Preview: Bruce Grant Stevens, 91, of Alpena passed away Thursday, April 11, 2024, at his home.
Bruce was born in Detroit, Michigan on August 31, 1932, the fourth of five children of Edwin and Gladys Stevens. He grew up in what would be described as a dysfunctional family home. As a teenager he was kicked out of high school in the ninth grade due to his delinquent behavior. He was part of a gang involved in all kinds of thievery. In June of 1950, his mother committed suicide. If nothing were to change in his life, he was destined to a life in prison. The neighborhood pastor, Ray Bayne, offered him a summer job at Camp Michawana in Hastings, Michigan. Members of the gang were angry with him, and it seemed a good plan to get out of town, so he accepted the job.
It was there at Camp Michawana that Bruce heard the Gospel and realized he was headed to an eternity in hell because of his sin. At camp, Bruce was required to memorize scripture. Jesus spoke to him…”Come unto me. All ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28) Bruce responded to the call and accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and he was saved. The Bible told him in 2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away, behold, all things are become new.” Bruce’s old life of crime was past and a new life for him to live with Jesus was before him.
In 1952, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a part of the Army Security Agency on a high security base in Germany. After his discharge, he married Alice Young and together they were blessed with five children, Grant, Brad, Walt, April, and Dean. From the time of his salvation in 1950, he became a student and teacher of the Word of God. He worked at various jobs including as a school janitor while attending Bible college. He attended William Tyndale College, formerly Detroit Bible College and graduated in 1963. Shortly after graduation, he was hired as a Child Welfare Social Worker with the Oakland County Department of Social Services. His caseload was made up of neglected children and delinquent teenagers. In 1968, the family moved to Alpena, Michigan where he was employed by the Alpena County Department of Social Services until his early retirement in 1984. His marriage to Alice ended sadly with divorce in 1975. In January of 1977, he married the former Kathleen Burke and gained three bonus children, Mary Frances, Jeffrey, and Matthew.
Over the years, and more so after retirement, Bruce taught Bible studies in churches, homes, and other venues. There were times he was teaching as many as six Bible studies a week, all on different books of the Bible. He had a talent for music, led several church choirs, played the guitar, piano, and wrote music. Everyone knew spring had arrived when he was seen driving about town with his canoe named Toot on top of his car. He was a master fisherman. Everyone who got into the canoe with him caught fish and heard the Gospel. Until he turned 80, Bruce played a strategic game of racquetball that kept his opponent running around the court while he stood in the corner waiting for the ball to come to him. He was a storyteller and a poet. If he met you, even ever so briefly, he prayed for you. He was a fine father, a loving husband, a funny grandpa, and a good friend. He was a faithful servant of his Lord. His earthly life came to a close when Jesus lifted him up into Glory, Thursday, April 11, 2024. There Jesus has wiped every tear from his eyes. No more death or mourning or crying or pain.
Bruce leaves behind his wife, Kathleen (Kathy); children, Grant (Dorothy) Stevens, Walt (Barbara) Stevens, April (Timothy) Frederick, Mary Frances (David) Ran, Jeffrey (Tracie) Papin, Matthew (Dawna) Papin; 19 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; brother Edwin Stevens; and the mother of his first children, Alice Young. He was preceded in death by his sons, Dean Stevens, Brad Stevens; three sisters, Dorothy McConchie, Romayne Allen, and Sadie Barnum.
Bruce worshiped the Lord as a part of the family of Fresh Water Bible Church. Visitation will take place Tuesday at Bannan Funeral Home on Tuesday from 2-8 p.m. and continue there Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the funeral service at 11 a.m. with Pastor Matthew Leavesley officiating.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice of a person's death, often including a brief biography of the deceased's life, details about the funeral or memorial services, information about surviving family members, and sometimes a request for charitable donations in their memory. They are typically published in newspapers and online.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as an important way to inform family, friends, and the community about a person's passing. They also provide an opportunity to celebrate the life and legacy of the deceased, while offering a historical record for future generations. Additionally, obituaries can help to publicly acknowledge grief and provide information about the funeral or memorial arrangements.

Who writes an obituary?

Obituaries can be written by family members, friends, or the funeral home handling the arrangements. Sometimes, individuals even write their own obituaries in advance as part of their end-of-life planning. In cases where a newspaper is involved, a journalist may write the obituary based on information provided by the family.

How is an obituary structured?

Obituaries generally begin with the announcement of death, followed by the deceased's full name, age, place of residence, and date of passing. This is typically succeeded by a recount of their life, significant achievements, and mention of family members. The obituary may include details of the funeral or memorial service and a closing message, which can be a note of thanks or a call for donations in their memory.

What information is included in an obituary?

An obituary typically includes the deceased's name, age, and date of death, biographical information such as place of birth, education, career, interests, and notable accomplishments, a list of surviving and predeceased family members, details on the service arrangements, and any preferred charities for memorial contributions.

Is an obituary legally required?

No, an obituary is not legally required. However, it is culturally and socially common practice to publish one as a way to notify the wider community and to honor the deceased.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a shorter, more factual statement of death, typically without the detailed life story or family information found in an obituary. Death notices are often paid for by the family and placed in a newspaper as a classified ad.

How can I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

To submit an obituary to a newspaper, contact the publication directly for their submission guidelines and costs. Many newspapers have online forms and specific requirements for content, length, and deadlines. You may need to provide proof of death, typically through a death certificate or communication from a funeral home.

What should I do if I notice an error in an obituary?

If you discover an error in an obituary, contact the newspaper or website where it was published as soon as possible. Provide them with the correct information, and ask for a correction or retraction to be published.

Are online obituaries becoming more common?

Yes, online obituaries have become increasingly popular, often accompanying or even replacing traditional newspaper obituaries. They offer advantages such as wider reach, lasting permanence on the internet, interactive features like guest books, and easier sharing on social media.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, writing your own obituary is a way to ensure your life story is told exactly as you wish, and it can be a therapeutic part of end-of-life planning. It also provides an opportunity to relieve the burden on your family during a time of grief.

How long after death is an obituary published?

An obituary is typically published within a few days after death, although the timing can vary. The publication date often depends on factors such as the timing of funeral services and the schedules of newspapers or online platforms.

How do I write a respectful obituary?

To write a respectful obituary, focus on celebrating the life of the deceased, emphasizing their positive attributes, accomplishments, and the impact they had on others. Always be sensitive to the feelings of surviving family and friends by confirming facts and gaining their consent before publication.

Can obituaries be denied publication?

While rare, obituaries can be denied publication if they contain content that is deemed offensive, libelous, factually incorrect, or inconsistent with the newspaper's policies. Most publications will work with the family to edit the obituary to meet their guidelines.

Is there a standard length for an obituary?

There is no standard length for an obituary, but newspapers often have word count restrictions or pricing per word for submission. Online platforms may be more flexible, but it is generally advisable to be concise and focus on the most meaningful aspects of the deceased's life and death.

Are photographs included with obituaries?

Photographs can often be included with obituaries, especially online. Newspapers may charge an additional fee for a photograph. When selecting a photo, choose one that is recent and clearly depicts the deceased, usually a headshot.

What are the costs associated with publishing an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary can vary widely depending on the length, newspaper circulation, inclusion of a photograph, and regional practices. Prices can range from a nominal fee to several hundred dollars. Online obituary platforms may offer free or more economical options.

How does one handle multiple obituaries in different locations?

If the deceased lived in, or had connections to, multiple places, it’s appropriate to publish obituaries in the local newspapers of those various locations. Each version can be tailored to the community it addresses, highlighting the connections and impact the deceased had there.

Should condolences or personal messages be included in an obituary?

Personal messages, such as final words of thanks or a sentimental tribute, can be included in an obituary as a way to express the family's feelings or share something significant about the deceased. These should be written with care, taking into account the public nature of the obituary.

Can I update an obituary after it is published?

Once an obituary is published in print, it cannot be updated. However, online obituaries often offer the flexibility to edit or add information after the initial publication. Contact the website or online memorial service to make any updates.

What is the best way to research past obituaries?

To research past obituaries, start with online newspaper archives, genealogy websites, or library digital collections. Historic obituaries can also be found in physical archives at local libraries or through newspaper morgues (newspaper archives).

How can I ensure the security and privacy of the deceased and their family when publishing an obituary?

To protect privacy and security, avoid including sensitive personal information such as home addresses, birth dates, or other data that could be used for identity theft. Share only the necessary details and consult with family members about their preferences for privacy.
