How can I write a memorable obituary for a loved one?

To write a memorable obituary, focus on what made the person unique, including their passions, characteristic traits, and impactful moments in their life. Share stories or anecdotes that capture their spirit and the essence of who they were.

If you spot an error in an obituary after it has been published, contact the newspaper or website as soon as possible to see if they can issue a correction. Many publications will correct minor errors free of charge.

Is it appropriate to list the cause of death in an obituary?

Whether to list the cause of death in an obituary is a personal choice. It's not necessary unless you wish to share that information. Some families prefer to keep it private, while others may share it to bring awareness to a particular health issue or condition.

Should I mention predeceased and surviving family members?

It is traditional to mention both predeceased and surviving family members to acknowledge the important people in the deceased’s life. However, due attention should be given to the privacy and wishes of family members.

What is a eulogy, and how does it differ from an obituary?

A eulogy is a speech given during a funeral or memorial service that pays tribute to the deceased. It is typically more personal and delivered orally. An obituary is a written announcement of death that summarizes the person's life and provides funeral details.

How can an obituary be a source of comfort for the bereaved?

An obituary can be a source of comfort by honoring the life of the deceased, sharing their story with a wider audience, and providing a sense of closure. It also invites the community to come together in support of those who are grieving.
