Russell Thompson - July 18, 1937 - October 20, 2021

Departed: 10/20/2021 (Hiawassee)
Obituary Preview: Horace Russell Thompson, Jr
Russell Thompson, best known as “Papaw” arrived at his heavenly home on October 20th, 2021. He was born on July 18th, 1937 to the late Horace Russell Thompson, Sr. and Clydie Mae (Thrower) Thompson. Russell was an only child. On June 10th, 1955 he married the love of his life, Mary Joyce (Rowan) Thompson. Together they brought three beautiful children into the world; Terry, Jeff, & Stephanie. Throughout the years Russell and Mary spread their love and faith in God with each person they came into contact with. When you think of Russell you think of a man that feared the Lord. Even in his final days he continued to praise the Lord and thank Him for the life he was blessed with.
Not only was Russell a man of God, but he was also the epitome of a father. The bible states in Ecclesiastes 12:13, “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter; Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. “. Russell instilled in each of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren the importance of fearing the Lord. He understood his roll as the head of the household and not a day or hour went by when he was not interceding for his family.
In 1970, Russell began his mission ministry in Haiti, Guyana. He worked selfishly to provide for those in need and continued to share his love for Christ with thousands of families in the mission field. Over the years, Russell helped build and restore churches, schools, and bring souls to Christ.
Russell loved to spend his time in the woods hunting or on the water fishing with his family and friends. This was another way he witnessed to those that he cared so much for. On Saturdays in the fall he made sure to take time for his favorite football team, Alabama, Roll Tide and loved to joke and cut up with his rivals.
There was always a smile on his face and you never knew what he was going to say next. Russell was a true character and always showered his love on everyone he met.
Russell was preceded in death by his parents Horace Russell Thompson, Sr.;  Clydie Mae Thompson and son Terry Thompson. He is survived by his beautiful wife, and the matriarch of our family; Mary Joyce Thompson. His legacy lives on in his surviving son Jeff and his daughter Stephanie and her husband Jimmy. Together Mary and Russell are blessed with their grandchildren; Terrell Thompson, Tracy Rains (Christie), Brent Thompson (Marque), Julie Bean (Chris), Joshua Taylor (Jentry), Kayla Ammons (Josh), and Jimmy Pearce III (Haley). As Russell was best know as, Papaw, he leaves behind a quiver full of great grandchildren; Hayden, Olivia and Paige Thompson; Phoenix Rains; Emelia, Hannah and Blake Thompson; Rachel, Brooke and Claire Bean; JD and Jaxi JuleTaylor; Conner, and Katie Pitts, Paislee Ammons; and Deegan Pearce.
To keep Russell’s mission work going, contributions can be made to Mary or Russell Thompson for Haiti Missions. You can mail directly to North Mount Zion Church of God at PO Box 62 Hiawassee, GA 30546. Visitation: Monday, October 25, 2021 12:00P-2:00P at Bainster-Cooper Funeral Home
Service: Monday, October 25,2021 at 2:00P with Rev. Ryan Wilson in the chapel of Banister-Cooper Funeral Home.
Burial to follow in Laurel Hills Cemetery.

James Ronald Box - February 23, 1947 - September 17, 2021

Departed: 09/17/2021 (Hiawassee)
Obituary Preview: "I have been trying to find the right words to say in this moment of my life, but there aren't words to describe or express how I truly feel. I've experienced loss before and have mourned over other family members but you were different. I didn't get my whole life Growing up with you, but my boys did. I got to watch you be the grandfather to them I wish I would have allowed you to be for me. I'm so thankful for the last 7 years of truly getting to know you as a person. You are funny and very smart. I can still hear your laugh and see the way your face lites up. The way you would get teary eyed as you watched Grant and Grayson play. I can hear your voice saying "I love you Granddaughter," and feel your arms around me. I can see the way you looked when talking about your favorite things. The way you talked to Nini. I loved watching the two of you together. Your love was genuine and it filled my heart with such joy. Its what i wanted and have found with Eli. You helped me become the woman I am today. I'll never forget when I told you how bad I had messed up in my past. I was worried you'd judge me, but you didn't. Instead you assured me that we all make mistakes. You allowed me to see that people can grow from their hurt. I love you and still can't seem to accept that any of this is real. When I try to, I stop and I cry. It's like I can't comprehend you not being here. I know it'll get easier but right now it feels like there's no end to it. So many people loved and adored you. It made me so proud to be a part of your family. I thought writing would help me cope, but I just want to always remember the day a part of my heart left this earth. I know you loved all of us very much. I'm thankful to have known that love. I was supposed to see you in 7 days, I was counting down to hugging you and telling you about my day! Having Eli tell you about his new job and just being there with you and Nini. But God had other plans for you. Despite the hurt im feeling i know that you're ok. You're not hurting and not in anymore pain. No more shots, pills or eye drops. No more long trips to Atlanta for the VA. You hated that traffic. Lol  Pawpaw you were a one of a kind man and I will never forget all that you have done in this life. I just really wish we could've had just a little more time. I will always love you! Love you Siné"

She often would say "of all the baby crows, mine are the blackest." She was blessed to be survived by all of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; along with numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. Joseph Leo Price - March 18, 1947 - September 12, 2021

Departed: 09/12/2021 (Hiawassee)
Obituary Preview: Mr. Joseph Price, age 74 of Price Lane, Hayesville, North Carolina passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, September 12, 2021 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center. Joseph was born March 18, 1947 in Young Harris, Georgia to the late Reva Lois Price. When a man's day is done and it comes time for their spirit to leave this earth he is not measured by the size of his tombstone but rather by the impact he had on those around him. Joseph was a man of immeasurable impact. That rare individual that no matter the circumstances stepped up to the plate. Joseph was a selfless man spending his life making sure his family was taken care of. When others couldn't manage he picked up the slack. When somebody was left with nowhere to go he was there. When somebody was going through a tough time he helped in any way he could. He was a workhorse of a man. If he wasn't at work you better believe stuff was getting done around the house, but it wasn't all about the work to him. His greatest passion was family. Just having people there to visit with, talk to, listen to stories, and throw something on the grill was some of his favorite things. He also loved his dogs and classic cars. We only wish there were more days to be around him but God said it was time to come home. His spirit will continue to live among us. We all love you and until we meet again you will forever be in our hearts. Joseph was a lifelong resident of the area and he loved his mountains. He is preceded in death by his mother, Reva Lois Price; and daughter, Rachel Anita Price. He is survived in death by his wife, Sue Price; children, Renee Townson, Denise Jones, Anthony (Julie) Parker, Amanda Price, Brittany (Derek) Josack, Joseph Leo Price II, Isaiah Price, Taylor Laster, Jadyn Price, and Tristan Price; fifteen grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; brother, Richard Joseph(Carla) Russo; one niece; one nephew; and extended family and friends. Memorial service: September 25, 2021 at Woods Grove Baptist Church at 2:00 pm. Banister-Cooper is in charge of arrangements for Mr. Price.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written announcement of a person's death, often published in newspapers or online platforms. It typically includes a brief biography of the deceased, details about funeral services or memorials, and can also offer an opportunity to celebrate the life and accomplishments of the individual.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a formal way to inform the community about a person's passing, pay tribute to their life, and notify friends and family of the funeral arrangements. They are also important historical records for future generations.

Who writes obituaries?

Obituaries are often written by close family members or friends, sometimes with assistance from funeral directors. Professional writers or journalists may also be hired to compose obituaries, particularly for public figures.

What is typically included in an obituary?

An obituary usually includes the full name of the deceased, their age, date of birth and death, a summary of their life's achievements, information about their family, details of the funeral or memorial service, and any charities to which people can make donations in memory of the deceased.

How can I find an old obituary?

Old obituaries can often be found in newspaper archives, online obituary databases, library collections, or by contacting the funeral home that handled the services. Some genealogy websites also offer access to historical obituaries.

Are obituaries published before or after the funeral?

Obituaries are typically published as soon as possible following a person's death to inform the community and announce the service details, so they are usually published before the funeral or memorial service takes place.

Can an obituary be too long?

While there is no strict limit to the length of an obituary, it is important to be concise and focus on the most significant aspects of the deceased’s life. Newspapers may charge by the word or the inch, so cost can be a factor in its length.

Is it mandatory to publish an obituary?

It is not legally required to publish an obituary. However, it is a widely accepted practice for acknowledging a person's death and informing the community, especially if the deceased had local ties or a wide circle of friends and acquaintances.

Can an obituary include personal messages?

Yes, personal messages such as final farewells, expressions of love, or special thanks can be part of an obituary. These messages add a personal touch and are often comforting to the family and friends of the deceased.

How do you address survivors in an obituary?

In an obituary, survivors are typically listed with their relationship to the deceased, starting with the closest relatives such as spouse, children, and siblings, followed by extended family members if space permits.

What if I make a mistake in an obituary?

If a mistake is found in an obituary, most newspapers and online platforms will allow you to correct the information and republish it. It is best to contact them promptly to make the necessary changes.

How soon after death should an obituary be published?

The timing can vary, but it is common to publish an obituary within a few days following the death to ensure that it serves its purpose in notifying the community and announcing service details in a timely manner.

Are obituaries free to publish?

Publishing an obituary can incur a cost, especially in newspapers which may charge based on length. Some online platforms and community bulletins, however, may offer free or low-cost options.

What should I do if I don't want to publish an obituary?

If you prefer not to publish an obituary, you can choose to inform friends and family members through personal communication means such as phone calls, emails, social media or by hosting a private memorial service.

Should I include details of the cause of death in an obituary?

Including the cause of death is a personal choice and not required. Some families opt to include it for transparency or to raise awareness for a particular health condition, while others prefer to keep it private.

How can I make an obituary more personal or unique?

To personalize an obituary, you can include anecdotes, quotations, hobbies, or a brief story that encapsulates the personality and life of the deceased. Sharing what made them unique can help celebrate their individuality.

Is a photograph necessary in an obituary?

A photograph is not necessary, but it is common practice to include one, as it can make the obituary feel more personal. If you decide to use a photo, choose one that is recent and represents the deceased well.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

While they are similar, an obituary is typically a more detailed account of a person's life and legacy, including biographical details and personal touches. A death notice, on the other hand, is usually a shorter, more formal listing of the name, date of passing, and service information, often dictated by the family or funeral home.

Where are obituaries typically published?

Obituaries are commonly published in local newspapers, on funeral home websites, and on dedicated obituary platforms. They may also appear in alumni magazines, professional journals, and even on social media.

Can I include charitable donations in an obituary?

Yes, it is common to include information about preferred charities or causes to which people can donate in memory of the deceased. This offers a way for others to honor the person's memory by contributing to a meaningful cause.

Is assistance available for writing an obituary?

Yes, funeral homes often provide obituary writing assistance, as do many online resources that offer templates and guidance. Professional writers who specialize in obituaries can also be hired to help craft a fitting tribute.
