Departed: 04/30/2020 (Uniontown)
Obituary Preview: Dawn Cagey Ryan Silva, age 96, of Connellsville, Pa, passed away on Thursday April 30, 2020, in the Uniontown Hospital just 5 days after her brother, Dana “Dan” Cagey passed away on April 25, 2020 in St. Clairsville, Oh.
She was born on Thursday April 10, 1924 to Lester and C. Edna Bryner Cagey, in the home built by her great grandfather, Michael Cagey, that still exists today, in the area once known, as Cagey Farm Lands and now known as Greater Point Marion in Springhill Twp., Fayette County.
In addition to her parents, Dawn was predeceased by her husband R. Dale Ryan, her second husband, Cecilio Silva, daughter Priscilla “Patti” Ryan Engle; grandsons, Steven Engle, Stanley Ryan; great-great- granddaughter, Arielle Kinsman, sisters; and infant sister Cagey, Lulu May Leonard, A. June Cagey, Wanda Humbert, A. Edna Jae, brothers; Arthur Cagey, Dana “Dan” Cagey and A. Lee Cagey, a daughter- in- law Linda Ryan. She was also predeceased by a wonderful lady, her mother’s best friend and a Cagey relative who became her mother figure as she herself became the mother figure to her younger siblings when her own mother passed away at the age of 37, the youngest being just 6 days old.  Dawn was 14 and that wonderful lady was Goldie Blosser Ball. They shared the Cagey/Blosser cemetery that contains many of their shared relatives that was used until it was filled. She was also predeceased by many sister and brother in laws and nieces and nephews.
A close-knit family, our beloved mother is survived by many, a son Doyle Ray Ryan and daughters, Clara Ryan McNair and husband Larry, Janet Ryan Teets, and husband Tom with whom she made her home for the past 13 years. She is also survived by many more wonderful grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, great great great grandchildren, her surviving siblings Elizabeth “Betty” Bonnard of Signal Mountain, Tn., Ada Anthony and her husband John of Essex, Md., Francis “Frank” Cagey of Seaford, Delaware, two sisters in law, Mary Jo Cagey of Pittsburgh, Jean Burns of Florida, son in law Samuel Engle, Sr., of Browns Mills, N.J., Many nieces and nephews and a dear close family friend Joan Dietz of Finleyville, Pa.
A very honorable mention to special ones that committed their time and energy to fulfill her daily and other needs, amazing granddaughters Dawana Gerber, Jenne Ryan, granddaughter in law Jennifer McNair, great granddaughters, Daphne Kinsman, Jana Welsh, Heidi Welsh, Amanda Pillar, Dawana McNair, great grandson Joshua McNair, great great granddaughter Hai-Lei Rugg. Also, a warm thank you to all of the other fantastic ladies that contributed their loving care for her essential needs throughout those years.
Two kind and loving young adult grandsons, Paul McNair II., of Franklin and Keith McNair of Scottdale who moved in with Dawn in her later years. As they pondered what to do with their lives while they worked, took extra care of schooling and sometimes entertained their friends, they gave her much needed daily company, cleaned the house and helped cook food and wash dishes. Three other grandsons raised in New Jersey never forgot their beloved grandmother as they raised their families, two also grandparents themselves, Samuel Engle, Jr., and wife Terry of Chester Va., Robert Engle and wife Josette of Browns Mills, N.J. and Richie Engle and wife Lemi of Arabi, LA.
A very awe-inspiring young lady Regan Hall loved her great great grandma beyond measure and wanted to see her often, bringing her little gifts she made and other trinkets as she inspected her from head to toe, the bond between them was tremendous, now age 7 this little girl is heartbroken. Dawn was raised on a dairy farm in the home her father built on his portion of the Cagey Farmlands where she and her family were very happy even during the depression years. They had an apple orchard and a few other fruit trees and gardens and the food that grew in the wild in addition to the cows, they had chickens, and rabbits and a pet cat they named Futtendoodle and had a funeral for him when he died. While their dad made swings and wagons and a merry go round for them their mom made clothes and stuffed animals and the best tasting foods. She also played the piano and sang them songs with her beautiful singing voice and told them stories that they never forgot. They went to school at the Cagey Schoolhouse that was named for Jacob Cagey when he donated the property. A road remains that is called Cagey School Road. The sadness came when their mother became ill and did not survive. A few years later their dad also passed away and Dawn raised the remaining younger children along with her own children.
An avid reader and collector of recipes, Dawn usually created her own recipes that were so appetizing they continue to be created today. She also was a remarkable seamstress, she loved traveling across the United States and also made visits to Canada and Mexico. If she could not see her children and grandchildren as often as she wanted to, she would mail them some goodies, usually her delicious homemade poppyseed cake or homemade cookies. Dawn dearly loved her family. A legend in her own right, Dawn had a wonderful story to be told.
Dawn attended meetings in Connellsville Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness for many years. She studied often with Sister Melvis Lewis and others. She loved all that she was learning and loved our Heavenly Father Jehovah.
Due to protective measures during the current pandemic visitation and services are private and by invitation only with Brother Michael Livingston officiating.
An open memorial service will be held for Dawn at a later date at the convenience of her family.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Baker-Terravecchia Funeral Home, Inc., 71 Pennsylvania Avenue, Uniontown, PA.
Interment will be private in Cedar Grove Cemetery, New Geneva, PA. If you wish to leave an online condolence for the family, please visit our website: www.baker-terravecchiafh.com

Dana Dale "Dan" Cagey - Unknown - April 25, 2020

Departed: 04/25/2020 (Uniontown)
Obituary Preview: “Dan” Dana Dale Cagey age 92 of Monroeville passed away Saturday April 25. 2020 in St. Clairsville, Ohio. At 12:45 P.M. He spent 6 weeks at his daughter Denise McColley’s home as she cared for him.
He was preceded in death by his parents Lester Cagey and Clara Edna Bryner Cagey of Pt. Marion. Five sisters, infant sister Cagey of Pt. Marion, Lulu May Leonard of Connellsville, Alvena June Cagey of Pt. Marion. Wanda Ruth Humbert and husband Harlan of Gans, and Adna Lee Cagey of N.J.   His first wife Mary Kay Halleren, Kyle, Cagey, Foster, son “Danny” Daniel Thomas Cagey, step son Harry Kyle, step daughters Patricia Louise Kyle, Marlene Kyle, and Joyce Kyle all of Pittsburgh.
He is survived by his second wife Mary Jo Caruolo Cagey of Pittsburgh, three daughters, Diane Lynn Koontz and husband George of Pittsburgh, Denise Celine McColley and husband Timothy of St. Clairsville, Oh., Sharon Michelle Cagey and fiancé Michael Liares of Sherman Oakes, Ca. and two sons, Dale Joseph Cagey and wife Joisee of Oh., and Chad “Dee” Cagey and wife Patty of Pittsburgh.  And two “adopted” children, Charles Foster Jr. And Candy Foster both of Pittsburgh.  He is also survived by three sisters, Dawn Smiles Ryan Silva of Connellsville, Anna Elizabeth “Betty” Bonnard of Signal Mt. Tn., and Ada Mae Anthony and husband John of Essex, Md. And many nieces and nephews.
Dan was born and raised on the Cagey Farm Lands in what is now known as Greater Pt. Marion.  He had three older sisters pass before his birth and has two olders sisters and one older brother Art Dawn and Wanda born before him as well. He was basically raised by his oldest sister Dawn whom he thought as his replacement mother until his death, when his own mother passed when he was ten and his next oldest sister contributed much as well until she married young and began her own family.  He loved all of his brothers and sisters equally but he and Dawn had a very deep bond with one another.  She worried about him and he worried about her.
Dan once had a crazy dangerous rode when he disobeyed his daddy. While his father was having a conversation with a friend, he was fiddling with the baby carriage that he knew he was forbidden to get in.  He got in anyway and the carriage began to roll. It rolled over a steep rocky hillside headed for the water, it happened so quickly.  His daddy’s friend instinctively reacted and caught him, carriage and all, just before he hit the bottom.  His father was so shaken and relieved he said nothing at all to his disobedient child at that moment, but he definitely had many talks with him about it over the years.
Dan spent a hitch in the Army, and when he was discharged, he got a job at the Summit Inn in Farmington and met up with a cook that became a good friend.  Eventually they both moved to Pittsburgh where they found jobs in restaurants as they decided exactly what they wanted for themselves. Dan chose to stay and remain in the area from then on.
A jokester all of his life he always had jokes to tell to make you laugh.  While we all would laugh sometimes, he laughed the hardest.  He would ask girls and ladies if they wanted a kiss and laugh at their responses as he handed them candy kisses. Checking out from a store once he said “Thank You Girl” and the young lady said “I and not a girl” and he responded “Oh ! Well thank you boy” and walked out the door. He joked with little children as well, as he told them funny little stories, always making them laugh and beg to hear more. He always had a candy or two for each of them. He once told one little girl to finish her dinner as we all continued to eat, she quickly responded with the remark “The party’s over” and left the room. She was four years old and everyone had a good laugh.
Dan loved his whole family and was always happy to see everyone. He loved all of his children dearly and they will remember all the good times with him. He will always be missed.
Dan was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in the Pittsburgh area for many years.
Due to protective measures during the current pandemic visitation and services were private with Brother Michael Livingston officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Baker-Terravecchia Funeral Home, Inc., 71 Pennsylvania Avenue, Uniontown, PA.
Interment was private. If you wish to leave an online condolence for the family, please visit our website: www.baker-terravecchiafh.com

Of course, we all want more. We are wired to want more of everything. More stuff, more time, more money, more life. We can’t control the length of life but we can control the depth in which we live. We can’t get more time but we can create more magic with the time we have. Mom always knew the hidden power and potential of a moment and she blessed them making mere moments magical and eternal.
Nostalgia permeates our lives because of her and we get to time travel when we glance back in joy. It’s like living twice. So not only did she give us life. She gave us a lifetime of memories and she lives on in them. Her ripple effects as a wife, mother, grandmother and nurse continue to spread out in expansive circles of loving kindness.
Life is indeed the best party we’ve been invited to. Thank you Mom!! We passed on the invite to our children. And we hope they dance as you inspired us to do!! You are forever loved and forever remembered. We want to thank you for your wonderful life and for sharing it with us. To imagine, that someone who embodied such a pure selfless and loving kindness awareness was our mother and wife is unfathomable to contemplate. The time, attention and love that you invested into our family is priceless. You personified Love in Action! How does one capture a life so well lived and attempt to put what you meant to us in words...
Family, friends, coworkers and others whose lives she touched are invited to the Baker - Terravecchia Funeral Home 71 Pennsylvania Ave. Uniontown, Pa., 15401 for the viewing to celebrate her life on Saturday Oct. 5th 2019 from  2-4pm and 6-8pm.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written announcement of someone's death, typically including a brief biography, significant life achievements, information about upcoming funeral services or memorials, and any other relevant information the family wishes to share with the community.

Who writes obituaries?

Obituaries can be written by family members, friends, or funeral directors. In some cases, individuals may even write their own obituary before they pass. Additionally, newspaper staff writers or journalists may write obituaries for prominent members of the community.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

An obituary is a longer, more detailed account that serves to celebrate the life of the deceased, while a death notice is a shorter, factual statement of death possibly including service information, typically paid for by the family and placed in a newspaper or online.

Where are obituaries published?

Obituaries are commonly published in newspapers (both in print and online), on funeral home websites, on social media, in church bulletins, and on dedicated obituary websites.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve multiple purposes. They notify the community of a death, celebrate the life of the deceased, provide details about funeral or memorial services, and serve as a historical record for future generations.

How long after a death is an obituary published?

This can vary greatly but typically occurs within a week of a death. The timing can depend on the publication deadlines, the wishes of the family, and any religious or cultural considerations. Some obituaries may be published on the day of the death if circumstances permit.

Are there guidelines to follow when writing an obituary?

While there is no set rule, an obituary generally includes the name, age, date of birth and death, a brief life story, information about surviving family members, details of the funeral service or memorial, and sometimes a request for charitable donations in lieu of flowers.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary can vary widely based on the length of the obituary, the publication in which it appears, and regional differences. Newspapers typically charge by the inch or by line, while many online sites offer free or fixed-price options.

Can anyone submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Yes, generally anyone can submit an obituary to a newspaper, but it typically needs to be approved by a primary family member or by the funeral home handling the services. The newspaper may also require proof of death, such as a death certificate.

What should be included in an obituary?

A standard obituary often includes the deceased’s full name, age, a list of close relatives both deceased and surviving, a brief overview of their personal life and career, their educational background, hobbies or passions, and funeral or memorial service details.

Is a photograph necessary in an obituary?

A photograph is not necessary but is commonly included as it provides a visual reminder of the person who has passed away. It can be a recent photo or one from an earlier, significant time in the person's life.

How can I find an old obituary?

Old obituaries can often be found in archived newspaper editions, which may be available online, at local libraries, through historical society records, or on specialized genealogy websites.

Can an obituary be published without a funeral service happening?

Yes, an obituary can be published irrespective of whether a funeral service is conducted. Obituaries primarily serve to inform the public of the death and celebrate the life of the individual.

Are obituaries fact-checked?

Newspapers and other formal publications usually require verification of death, such as a death certificate or confirmation from a funeral home. Details within the obituary, like dates and names, are often accepted in good faith based on the family's input.

How do you write a respectful obituary?

To write a respectful obituary, be truthful and considerate in your language, focus on significant achievements and the positive aspects of the person's life, and confirm details with family members for accuracy and completeness.

What if there's a mistake in an obituary?

If you find a mistake in an obituary, contact the publication or website that posted it as soon as possible to request a correction. Provide clear details of the error and the necessary amendments.

Can obituaries be updated once they are published?

While print obituaries cannot be altered once published, online obituaries may often be updated or edited by the family or the website administrators upon request.

What cultural considerations should be taken into account when writing an obituary?

Different cultures might have specific traditions or preferences regarding the sharing of information after a death. It's important to be mindful of such practices and to consult with family members or cultural advisors when writing an obituary.

How can I write a unique obituary that stands out?

To write a unique obituary, focus on the individual's personality, tell a story that encapsulates their life, use quotes from the deceased or their loved ones, and highlight the distinctive traits and experiences that truly defined them.

Is it appropriate to mention the cause of death in an obituary?

Including the cause of death is a personal choice and depends on the family's comfort level. Some may choose to be open about it, particularly if the death pertains to a public issue or if it could help others. However, it is by no means a requirement or expectation.

Who decides where the donations in a deceased person’s memory should go?

The family of the deceased typically decides on any preferred charities or causes for donations in memory of the deceased. These wishes are often conveyed in the obituary to guide friends and the community in paying tribute.

Can an obituary include a call to action other than donations?

Yes, an obituary can include various calls to action, such as asking attendees to wear a particular color in honor of the deceased, requesting handwritten memories for a keepsake book, or encouraging community service in their memory.
