Kyle James Smelcer - March 23, 1990 - August 22, 2023

Departed: 08/22/2023 (Bend)
Obituary Preview: Kyle James Smelcer passed away unexpectedly from a vehicle accident in the early morning hours of August 22, 2023. Kyle was heading to the mountains for a sunrise climb of South Sister Mountain in Central Oregon, to be his second of three planned sunrise summits of the week
Kyle loved the mountains, whether on foot, mountain bike, or skis. It was his “happy place”, a place he found a sense of freedom and beauty, providing both physical challenges and a spiritual connection with its vastness.
Kyle was passionate about mountain biking and was an avid racer. Since the age of eight, he rode every single track and trail from the top of Mt. Ashland to town, and took on any challenging trail around the Mt. Bachelor and Bend Areas.
He also loved to ‘dance’ on the snow with his twin tips on both Mt. Ashland and Mt. Bachelor since he was four years old. No slope was too deep or steep for him to jump, carve, or freeride. In summers his ride switched to wakeboarding with jumps, 180’s, and graceful carves.
He loved to fish with his dad and brother and always helped his mom struggle to land the “big one.” While living in Bend, Kyle added fly fishing to his river explorations and enjoyed the quiet time in nature.
Kyle is survived by his parents, James and Mary Smelcer of Ashland Oregon and older brother, Keith Smelcer of Medford Oregon. He is loved and will be missed by many, including his Aunts and Uncles, Janis Tiffin, Bonnie Oppenhuis, Marge Gibbs, Andrew Tiffin, Rob Tiffin, Genie Bone, and many cousins. His lifelong buddies, AKA the “Alpha Coyote Clan”, wove a tight weave of colorful fabric with their lives and love through many good times, tough times, adventures, and life experiences.
Kyle attended OSU/COCC Bend, while working in Bend to support his sporting adventures, travels, and school. He enjoyed all his colleagues, and they all loved his charismatic smile, sense of humor, fun and adventurous way of living life large. There will be a celebration of life memorial service at 1:00 PM on September 23, 2023 at the Mt. Ashland Ski Area lodge. A friends gathering may also be planned for Bend Oregon. (information TBD)

Dean Robertson Duvall - February 04, 1955 - May 01, 2023

Departed: 05/01/2023 (Bend)
Obituary Preview: Dean Duvall was a man who lived by a dedication to his faith and values. He was highly adventurous and very responsible—a rare combination of traits. A life-long learner, committed leader, always curious, an avid reader, humble, with a playful sense of humor. Dean was a beloved son and inspiring brother.
Dean was born in 1955 to parents Dale and June Duvall. Raised in Portland, Dean had an adventurous childhood with his siblings Dirk and Dian. There was camping, hiking, fishing, tennis, vacations to National Parks and historical monuments across North America. Dean loved to fly with his Dad as the pilot and was always ready for the next take off and destination. These family activities helped to define Dean’s sense of curiosity and adventure throughout his life.
A deep faith came early to Dean, participating in YoungLife and serving as a Club leader. During college Dean volunteered as a Mountain Guide Leader in YoungLife’s Beyond Malibu program. He guided high school students in one-week spiritual and physical expeditions in the mountains above the inlets of British Columbia, Canada.
Dean loved music. He learned to play the oboe at age 10 and the guitar at 17 and continued to play music his entire life. When the moment was right, he would sing any Frank Sinatra song. He used his love of music to connect with others. An accomplished athlete, Dean was a long-distance road-bike rider participating in rides of 200 or 100 miles per day. As a West Coast ranked squash player, Dean represented the Multnomah Athletic Club winning tournaments in Vancouver, Seattle and Portland. Perhaps his 20 years of squash formed his pickleball prowess…
With his uncanny sense of direction to guide his travels, Dean’s adventures took him across the Pacific Ocean and to many states and countries. Over three summers he was the skipper of a 43’ racing boat—sailing for 21 days from Maui to Seattle. He rode his motorcycles through twisting back roads of Oregon to Oklahoma; walked and discovered the labyrinth of alleys and bridges in Venice; and drove to remote French and Italian hilltop villages—just because they were there. All with awe and appreciation of what he was experiencing.
Dean used his analytical problem solving and easy connection with people in his professional life while holding multiple IT positions in Oregon and, most recently, as a Systems Analyst in Texas. Because he was an impactful leader and understood the critical importance of leadership, Dean wrote a book on leadership: The Leaders Guide to Followers.
In March 2020 Dean returned to Oregon to be with his mom June at Black Butte Ranch. He became an active member of Sisters Community Church and an inspirational participant in his church groups. Dean quickly formed new friendships through church, music, mountain biking and near-daily trips to the pickleball court.
On May 1st, Dean peacefully passed to be with his Heavenly Father. He was predeceased by his dad Dale and his brother Dirk. He is survived by his mother June, sister Dian, brother-in-law Ray, life-long friends, aunties, nieces, nephews, cousins and new friends.
Services will be held at Sisters Community Church on May 19th at 3 PM. A Celebration of Life for Dean will take place at Black Butte Ranch in June. Baird Funeral Homes, Bend is handling the arrangements

Homer Merrifield - March 12, 1930 - May 01, 2023

Departed: 05/01/2023 (Bend)
Obituary Preview: Homer “Herc” Merrifield was born in Syracuse, New York on March 12, 1930 to Homer and Hazel Hamlin Merrifield. He grew up in Baldwinsville, New York where he attended Baldwinsville Academy now Baldwinsville High School. He knew early on he wanted to attend college despite his Mom telling him they could not pay for it. He made sure he took classes that prepared him for college and was a
stand out athlete lettering in football, basketball, and baseball. The summer following his senior year in high school he was invited to try out as a catcher with the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field. This was one of his favorite stories to relate to people, including the fact that Jackie Robinson was on the field at the same time. Although this was very flattering, especially at just 18 years of age, Herc saw his future with a college education. He went on to attend Colgate University in Hamilton, New York. He played baseball and football there and was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. He graduated in 1952 with a degree in Natural
Sciences - Education. Following graduation he was immediately drafted by the US Army. He served 2 years as a medic at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. He took full advantage of the GI Bill when he was discharged and returned to Colgate to get his Master’s degree in 1955. He became an Instructor at St Lawrence University in Canton, New York where he also coached basketball and football. He
married Eleanor Gwynn in 1956. They left Canton in 1958 for him to pursue his PhD at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. In 1960 with his PhD in hand, they returned to central New York where he started as an Assistant Professor at Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York. He became a full professor in 1972 where he remained until 1982. During his time there 20 of his 22 years were in the Department of Physical Therapy. Also while in Ithaca, Herc and Eleanor became parents to Michael in 1965 and Merri in 1967. They were and remained his pride and great joy! Seeing his future advancing in the physical therapy field he returned to school to obtain a degree in physical therapy from Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, New York in 1975. In 1982 he was recruited to Lubbock, Texas to start a Physical Therapy program at Texas Tech University. Georgia Blessey joined him there in 1987 and they were married in 2000. At that time he became the official Papa Herc to Noelle and Marla Blessey. During his tenure at Tech Herc went on to become an Associate Dean in the School of Allied Health and Chair of the Department of Rehabilitation
Sciences overseeing seven degree programs. He retired from Tech in 2002 as a Professor Emeritus. Herc found Bend, Oregon while searching for good ski towns to retire to. A plus for Bend, it also had a top craft beer scene. Bend won out with its pairing of two things Herc enjoyed. Herc became a lift operator at Mt Bachelor and worked there to beyond his 80th birthday. This job got him and Georgia free season passes which they put to good use. Herc loved to watch Texas Tech athletics, in person when he lived in Lubbock and later streaming in Bend. Unfortunately in his last years his catcher’s knees caught up with him, severely limiting his mobility and his
ability to engage in the outdoor activities he loved. During his many years in academia, Herc authored, coauthored, and presented papers on biomechanics,
physical therapy, sports medicine and distance education at national and international conferences. He was an active member of the American Physical Therapy Association even in his retirement and participated in the sections on Education, Research, and Orthopedic Physical Therapy. He was a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine. He maintained his affiliation with Sigma Chi and
enjoyed going to the local meetings while living in Lubbock. Herc enjoyed outdoor activities his entire life with his favorites being sailing and skiing. He
also enjoyed gardening and exercising at the local gym where he had many friends. Herc is survived by his wife, Georgia, his son, Michael Merrifield and his wife Jolyn, his daughter, Merri Goodrow and her husband, John; his grandchildren, Trevor Merrifield, Hannah Merrifield Crouch and her husband, Jonathan, Kelty Goodrow, and Colden Goodrow; his stepdaughters
Noelle and Marla Blessey; his dog Red Raider and cat Max as well as nieces and nephews. Herc is predeceased by his first wife Eleanor Merrifield, his parents Homer and Hazel Merrifield,
his sister Mae, and many beloved dogs. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday June 16th at 3 PM at First Presbyterian Church of Bend. Herc chose to be cremated. His ashes will be spread in the places he loved, Mt Bachelor tops among them! Those wishing to make a Memorial Donation are asked to donate to Partners in Care www.partnersbend.org

Brianna Michele Klein - January 30, 1981 - April 09, 2023

Departed: 04/09/2023 (Bend)
Obituary Preview: Brianna Michele Klein, 42, passed away unexpectedly on April 9th, 2023 at her home. She was born on January 30, 1981, in Elyria, Ohio to her mother, Jenifer Mary Krupski and was the oldest sister to her three siblings. She grew up on the Outer Banks of North Carolina where she graduated from Manteo High School.
Brianna lived an adventurous, fun lifestyle. From surfing the Carolina beaches to shredding on her snowboard when she moved out west to Vail, Colorado, to Truckee, California, followed by a brief stint in Mount Hood, Oregon and finally, her cherished home for the past 21+ years in Bend, Oregon. Brianna has always worked in the restaurant industry in some capacity and was an amazing server and bartender who people came to see and frequently requested. Brianna was renowned and adored beyond measure in this beautiful mountain town where she worked as a server at Sidelines Sports Bar and Grill in downtown Bend for the past 5 years. She never met a stranger; to know her was to love her. Her smile was contagious, her laugh infectious and her soul magnetic. Everyone was drawn to and gravitated towards Bri. To be in her presence and have the opportunity to simply be around her was truly on of life’s gifts. The entire community, her family and her friends are shaken and broken from the tragic and unforeseen loss.
Brianna enjoyed loud music (mostly of the punk rock variety), concerts, traveling to Mexico and her childhood home on the Outer Banks, warm weather, a good glass of Rose (or Frose in nicer weather) or a cold vodka soda and Paloma’s, tacos, candy, desserts and milkshakes, pop culture, trashy reality TV (self-admitted), being by any form of water (if she couldn’t be by the ocean, you’d often find her at Elk Lake, First Street Rapids or at her various friends pool in the summer), laughing, smiling, loving, hugging and being with her friends, family and mostly, her nieces and nephew who she loved beyond measure. Auntie Bri was adored by her “kids” and loved being spoiled by her with frequent trips to Cuppa Yo, going out but to eat at Sidelines or the various food trucks and getting fries from Bangers and Brews with every single dipping sauce, having sleepovers and feeding them pizza and copious treats, taking them to Munch and Music and on numerous adventures to the pool, river, and lake. They are devastated by this enormous loss. Brianna is survived by her mother, Jenifer Mary Krupski, her loving siblings Jordan Klein (wife Amber Klein), Stephanie Ferris (husband Jeff Ferris) and Carley Kenworthy (husband Josh Kenworthy); Steve Klein, Aunt Cathy and Uncle Brian, her nieces and nephews Rose Kenworthy, Penelope Kenworthy, Jackson Kenworthy, Journie Ferris, and Jourdan Ferris, far too many friends from far and wide to count and her be loved extended Sidelines family. She was preceded in death by her Uncle John, Aunt Lynette, Dr. John G. Krupski and Grandmother Virginia Krupski aka “Ma.”
Her memory and spirit will forever be embodied in our heads and our hearts; her smile and laugh will never be forgotten. We love you, our beautiful Brianna. Until we meet again.

He graduated from Elmore-Harris High School and entered the Army where he served as an Intelligence Specialist. In 1960 Denny and his brother, Keith, purchased the business that was to become Kruse Cleaners. Many people in the communities of Elmore, Genoa and Millbury knew Denny from the dry cleaners and the laundromats which the brothers operated for more than 40 years.
Denny married Kathleen Kimmet of Gibsonburg on November 14th of 1959. They spent more than 63 loving years in marriage. He is survived by his wife Kathy, his sister Bonnie (Moyer), his son and daughter-in-law Steve and Karen and his two grandchildren Carter and Sierra.

Nobody liked a good laugh, a road trip, a good (or bad) hot dog, or time shared around the table with friends and family more than Denny Kruse.
Denny and Kathy moved to Bend, Oregon in 2022 to live with his son and daughter-in-law, Karen. He spent the last year of his life loving and being loved by family, living in the western landscape and mountains that he was drawn to all of his life.

Deborah Dye Gentling - April 11, 1944 - August 07, 2022

Departed: 08/07/2022 (Bend)
Obituary Preview: Deborah Dye Gentling passed away on August 7th, 2022, at age 78. She was a force who was known for her independence and her unconventional approach to life. She was born and raised in Dayton, Ohio surrounded by a large family, but left home at an early age to attend the Greenbrier School and Summer Camp at Camp Appalachia, both in West Virginia. She spent her time at school tormenting the teachers and learning to smoke – the great joy of her life. At camp she took up riflery quickly becoming one of the top markswomen in the US, a truly unconventional sport for a lady of the day. During these years she would meet her first love, Daniel Loren Ervin (Dan). They were married and she followed him to Oregon – a little-known state to her and her family. She loved the Western spirit and the fresh air of Oregon. Her passion for Dan ran both ways and they had a spirited relationship that would end in divorce. Dan and Debbie were forever connected by their feelings of first love and their two surviving children, Elizabeth Ervin Quinn and David Loren Ervin.
Continuing her independence and unconventional choices, Debbie stayed in Oregon after the divorce and moved to Sunriver where she would spend many years raising her two children with the help of the Sunriver community in the 1980s.
It is in Sunriver that she met her final love and companion, Richard Glynn Gentling (Dick). They shared a passion for golf and Dick would teach Debbie to become a scratch golfer. They were married and played golf together year round in Sunriver and Palm Springs until Dick’s passing in 2005.
In her final years, she gave up golf and spent her time managing her farm as a fifth generational farmer with her surviving brother, Dean Dye, and sitting on the back porch talking with her daughter, Elizabeth, and Elizabeth’s partner, Ed. Upon visits they were not acknowledged until Elizabeth and Ed’s dog, Bowden, was thoroughly greeted and fed treats. Debbie’s greatest joy in life was spending time with her only grand daughter, Madison Quinn. From her back porch, Debbie, continued her skills as a markswoman with critter control around and under her house.
In true Debbie style, she had total control over her death. She refused the breathing machine and passed quietly in her sleep at St. Charles Hospital in Bend, Oregon after experiencing complications from pneumonia brought on by COVID-19.
Following her unconventional approach to life, we ask that you not provide flowers or donations and instead “just get on with it.” However, in the spirit of her frugality and independence, if you would like to buy yourself something nice in her honor (if it is on major sale), we would encourage it.

Loren Gene Waddell - March 23, 1929 - July 29, 2022

Departed: 07/29/2022 (Bend)
Obituary Preview: It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my husband, Loren Gene Waddell on July 29, 2022 in Bend, Oregon. He was 93.
Gene was born March 23, 1929 in Decatur, Illinois to Loren Thurman Waddell and Elsie Elizabeth Gasaway Waddell. Gene spent his early years in down-state Illinois in the small town of Mt. Pulaski. He excelled in school and sports at Mt. Pulaski High School. After High School, Gene served in the Army and then Gene attended the University of Illinois graduating with honors with a degree in Journalism. Gene was a life-long Illini fan and would often break into the Illini fight song. He proudly wore the “Block I”.
Gene commenced his work/career life at a young age. He was always employed, starting with an early morning paper route, working at the drug store in Mt. Pulaski, and working various summer jobs; one summer stint on the railroad and another as a traveling photographer. In Champaign, while attending university, Gene worked for Lloyd Eichorst Autos, becoming in his senior year, the sales manager at the dealership. After graduating, Gene went to work for the Barber-Greene Company in Aurora, IL, then moved to Muscatine, IA to take the position of sales director for The Prime Mover Company, HON Industries, and was soon promoted to the position of CEO of The Prime Mover Company. Gene retired in 1992 enjoying winters in Tucson, AZ and summers in Bend, OR.
Gene was a man who pursed his passions which included flying and golf. It was in Muscatine that Gene received his Pilot’s License and Instrument Rating. He often flew family and friends to destinations across the US piloting his Cessna 180 “3378C” saying it was just the right airplane to accommodate four persons and golf clubs. Gene always had a golf game on his schedule. Gene belonged to several golf clubs including Geneva Country Club in Muscatine, Tucson Country Club and Ventana Canyon Country Club in Tucson, and Widgi Creek Golf Club in Bend. Over his golfing lifetime, Gene scored five Holes-In One, several Eagles, shot his age several times in his 80’s, and brought home trophies when he entered tournaments. Finishing the 18th hole was not the end of his golf outing. Gene then headed to the 19th hole for a card game and if he couldn’t find any pitch players, he taught the game to his companions. Yet passions of flying, golf, music, dancing, books, stories, news, jokes, stocks in good American companies, the perfect martini, and great friends were distant seconds to his love of family. Family was foremost in his heart.
Gene is survived by his wife, Denise, children Nancy Raabe and husband Mark of Belmont, CA; David Waddell of Lisle, IL; Barbara Faherty of Melbourne, FL; and step-daughter Stacy Scott of Sperryville, Va. Gene is also survived by his treasured granddaughters April Waddell Falco, Angela Waddell Hanni, Danielle Faherty Keane, Taryn Faherty, and Lauren Raabe Malfatti, also three special greatgrands, Lacey Falco, Madelyn Waddell, and Juliette Keane. Gene is also survived by his sister Kathy Vil and husband Pascal of Springfield, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Donald Waddell and his sister Donna Small.
A Remembrance Service for Gene will be held on August 26, 2022 at the Elkai Woods Lodge at the Widgi Creek Golf Course in Bend, OR. Open House will be from 2:00 – 5:00 with the service at 3:00. Memorial contributions may be made to Folds of Honor, Department #13 Tulsa, OK 74182.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a notice of someone's death, typically published in newspapers or online platforms. It usually includes a brief summary of the deceased person's life story, their significant achievements, and information about the upcoming funeral or memorial services. Obituaries serve as a way to publicly acknowledge the passing of an individual and inform the community of their loss.

Who writes obituaries?

Obituaries can be written by family members, friends, or funeral home professionals. Occasionally, newspapers have staff writers who specialize in composing obituaries, particularly for prominent figures. Some individuals even choose to write their own obituaries in advance as part of their end-of-life planning.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or website?

To submit an obituary, contact the publication or website where you wish to have the notice appear. They will provide you with submission guidelines, deadlines, and information on any fees associated with publication. Typically, you'll be asked to send a written notice via email or through an online submission form, but some newspapers may also accept fax or mail submissions.

Are there standard components that should be included in an obituary?

Yes, a standard obituary typically includes the full name of the deceased, their age at the time of death, the date and place of passing, a list of surviving family members, a brief biography, details about the funeral or memorial services, and any charitable donation instructions in lieu of flowers.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on personal preference, the individual's life story, and the space limitations of the publication. However, it generally ranges from a few sentences for a basic death notice to several paragraphs for a more detailed account of the deceased's life.

What makes an obituary engaging?

An engaging obituary goes beyond the basic facts and shares anecdotes, personal qualities, and the unique essence of the individual. It captures the spirit of the deceased and often includes heartfelt sentiments that resonate with readers, creating a lasting tribute.

Is there a difference between an obituary and a death notice?

Yes, a death notice is typically a shorter, factual statement of the person's passing, including details on funeral services, while an obituary is a more comprehensive account of the deceased's life and legacy. Obituaries usually contain more personal and detailed information.

Can an obituary be published both online and in print?

Absolutely. Many families choose to publish obituaries in both formats to ensure that a wider audience is reached, encompassing those who prefer traditional newspapers as well as those who primarily access information online.

Should an obituary include the cause of death?

Including the cause of death is at the discretion of the family. Some families prefer to keep this information private, while others want to be open about the circumstances surrounding the death, especially if it pertains to public awareness about illnesses or conditions.

What is considered a respectful way to acknowledge donations or help received?

Acknowledging donations or assistance is commonly done by including a sentence such as, "The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to [individuals, communities, or organizations] for their support during this difficult time." You can also direct readers to donate to a designated charity in memory of the deceased.

Is it necessary to list all surviving family members in an obituary?

While it's not mandatory to list all surviving relatives, it is traditional to include immediate family members such as spouses, children, siblings, and parents. Extended family members can also be included if the family wishes to do so.

How can one personalize an obituary?

An obituary can be personalized by sharing stories, favorite quotes, hobbies, or significant life achievements that highlight the deceased's personality. Including a photo can also add a personal touch to the obituary, making it more engaging for readers.

Is there a time frame for publishing an obituary?

There is no strict time frame for publishing an obituary, but it is typically done soon after the person's passing, often within a few days to a week, to timely inform the community and announce any service arrangements.

What should one do if a mistake is found in an obituary after publication?

If a mistake is found in an obituary after publication, contact the newspaper or website as soon as possible to correct the error. Most publications are understanding about these sensitive matters and will work quickly to amend the obituary.

Are obituaries open to public editing?

No, obituaries are not open to public editing. They are written by a specific individual or group and published as submitted. However, input from close family and friends may be sought by the author before finalizing the obituary for submission.

How do cultural differences impact the writing of an obituary?

Cultural differences can significantly impact the content and tone of an obituary. Different cultures may have traditions, customs, and perspectives on death that influence how an obituary is written and what information is included. It's important to consider and respect these cultural factors when composing an obituary.

Is it common to include a poem or scripture in an obituary?

Incorporating a poem, scripture, or inspirational quote is common and can be a fitting way to reflect the beliefs, values, or personality of the deceased. This addition can offer comfort to those grieving and provide a more meaningful tribute.

How should contributions to charities be mentioned in an obituary?

When including charity details, be specific about the organization's name and, if possible, provide an address or website where donations can be made. A phrase like, "In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to [Charity Name] at [Address/Website]" is typically used.

An obituary itself is not a legal document; however, in some jurisdictions, publishing a death notice can be part of the legal process to notify the public and potential creditors of the individual's passing as part of estate proceedings.

What if a family cannot afford to publish an obituary?

If a family cannot afford to publish an obituary, there are often free or low-cost options available through local community papers, religious institutions, or social media platforms. Some newspapers also offer reduced rates or special provisions for those in financial need.

How much does it typically cost to publish an obituary?

The cost to publish an obituary can vary greatly based on the publication's reach, length of the obituary, and inclusion of a photograph. Prices can range from a nominal fee for a simple notice to several hundred dollars for a detailed tribute in a major newspaper.

Is privacy a concern when publishing obituary details?

Privacy is certainly a concern, particularly in the age of digital information sharing. When writing an obituary, consider the privacy and safety of surviving family members by minimizing overly personal information and following any publication's privacy guidelines.
