Virginia Mae Franke - May 09, 1925 - June 05, 2023

Departed: 06/05/2023 (Austin)
Obituary Preview: Virginia (Ginna) Mae Mollan Franke passed away peacefully on June 5, 2023 at her assisted living home in Austin, Texas, surrounded by her loving family. Ginna was born on May 9, 1925 in Hibbing, Minnesota to Emil and Amanda Mollan. The second of four siblings, she was raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and excelled in school, graduating as salutatorian of her class at Roosevelt High School. Ginna attended college briefly at the University of Minnesota.
Ginna met the love of her life, Merle Franke, when he took a part-time job as her church choir director in Minneapolis while attending Northwestern Lutheran seminary. He took notice right away of the beautiful blonde with the lovely alto voice, which sparked a romance that culminated in their wedding in May 1947. Soon after they married, they moved from Minneapolis to the US Virgin Islands for Merle’s first call in the ministry, at Holy Trinity Lutheran in Frederiksted, St. Croix and subsequently at Frederick Lutheran in Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas. Island life appealed to the adventurous young couple, and three of their children were born there. In 1954, Merle’s work took the family back to Minnesota for a few years, where a fourth child was born, then to Illinois for six years where their last child was born.
In 1964 the family moved to Austin, Texas where Merle served for 20 years as pastor of First English Lutheran Church. Ginna played an active role in all aspects of the church community, sang in the church choir, and was instrumental in launching the First English Child Development Center. In 1971 Merle and Ginna purchased their 1920’s era craftsman home on Avenue D where they lived for 47 years. They were very engaged in the neighborhood, and helped to establish the Hyde Park Neighborhood Association, which works to preserve the unique and historic character of the community.
Ginna and Merle enjoyed 72 years of marriage together, with Ginna expertly and efficiently navigating her various roles as pastor’s wife extraordinaire, mother to five rambunctious kids, chief homemaker, family finance director, bookkeeper for the Texas-Louisiana Synod of the LCA, and active volunteer. Her love for her family was evident in the frequent family gatherings she organized to celebrate birthdays, graduations, weddings, baptisms, and holidays. She and Merle loved to travel, visit relatives far and wide, and spend time in the great outdoors.
Ginna’s faith guided her throughout her long life, and went beyond what she believed in her mind, felt in her heart, or said in her words. She lived that faith in how she cared for the earth, stood up for peace and justice, and treated all people with kindness and consideration. She was an active member and volunteer treasurer of Church Women United. She marched for peace at the state capitol. She provided disaster relief in the US Virgin Islands. Her passion and concern for the environment was fundamental to her being and led her to help establish green teams at church, research and implement native Texas plants in her gardens, favor walking over driving whenever possible, and teach her kids and grandkids the importance of conserving and protecting our precious natural resources.
Ginna was also passionate about games and spent many happy years playing bridge with friends, board games with her kids, teaching grandkids to play Mexican Train and other games, and reveling in beating Merle in Quiddler on a daily basis. In her later years when playing Quiddler with her daughters, she would console them if she won, saying “it’s only a game”, but if she lost, she would mutter “Mother beater” (with a twinkle in her eye). She kept her wit and feisty sense of humor to the end.
Ginna is survived by her five children, six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Her children: son James Franke (wife Stuart) in Austin, daughter Becky Greathouse (husband Bennie) in Blanco TX, son Steve Franke (wife, Coral, deceased) in Austin, daughter Gwen Flory (husband Bruce) in Austin, and daughter Kris (husband, Don, deceased) in San Antonio. Her six beloved grandchildren: Matthew (Tina) Flory, Liselle (Chase) Andries, Tyler Flory, Ashleigh (Brian) Abadie, Nick Franke, and Henry (Desitiny) Greathouse. Ginna welcomed with joy each of her nine great grandchildren: Ella, Presley, and Olivia Flory, Carter and Collin Andries, Jake and Jace Greathouse, Emily and Emmitt Abadie. Ginna was predeceased by her parents, Emil and Amanda, her siblings and their spouses Jean Sutherland (Bud), Vernon Mollan (Shirley) and Eddie Mollan; and her loving husband Merle, who passed away in 2020 at the age of 95.
Ginna spent her final years at The Village at The Triangle assisted living community, where she enjoyed engaging in activities, visiting with family, and playing her word games.

James Curtis Harris Jr. - November 21, 1930 - March 19, 2023

Departed: 03/19/2023 (Austin)
Obituary Preview: Obituary
James Curtis Harris, Jr., (“JC” or “Jim”, as he was known to many) was born on November 21, 1930, in Austin, Texas, to Maggie Mae Harris and James Harris, Sr.
He was called home on March 19, 2023, following a long and inspiring life in which he devoted his time and energy to his family, his faith, the communities in which he lived, and creating business opportunities for himself that society had not provided him. He leaves behind a loving wife, sons, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless others who have been touched by his warmth, humor, love, and his beautiful singing.
At the age of 10, JC accepted Christ as his personal Lord and Savior and was baptized at Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church, Austin, TX, where his family were members.
In 1943, James and Maggie moved from Texas to Menlo Park, California - part of the Great Migration of Black Americans from the South to northern, midwestern and western states. JC and his brother, George, and sister, Evelyn, initially stayed in Austin with their aunt and uncle, Sally and JD Houston. In January 1945, they joined their parents in Menlo Park, before the family settled in Redwood City. For a time, the Harris household also included Surlene Jackson, who had also come from Austin, and who would live with them until she married George Grant. JC graduated from Sequoia High School in 1948.
In March 1950, JC married his first wife, Helen Faye Roberson, of Palo Alto, who herself had moved from Texas to the Bay Area with her mother, Johnnie Mae, and sister, Bobbie Jean. To this union was born their two sons: Douglas Erwin Harris and James Edward Harris, III. JC was a caring and devoted father who instilled in his sons the love of God and music; the importance of family, community and the fight for social and racial justice; an appreciation of nature and wildlife; and the importance of a college education.
In 1953, the Harrises, along with other Black residents of Redwood City, decided to establish a single Black Baptist house of worship by combining two struggling smaller congregations. Like the Harrises, many of these residents had migrated from Austin, Texas, and they named their new church Mt. Zion Baptist Church, after the Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church which they had previously attended in Austin. JC became a Deacon of the church in 1955, a Sunday school teacher, and also its Minister of Music, directing the Senior Choir, the Echoes of Zion (the young adult choir), the Junior Choir and the Men’s Chorus. JC’s faith in God and commitment to helping those in need extended beyond the four walls of the church. He devoted time to teaching incarcerated men at the San Mateo County Jail in Redwood City, and in leading the convalescent ministry. JC had an incredible tenor voice and no one who has ever heard it will forget his singing “No Man is an Island.” Even in his later years, his voice was majestic and inspiring.
Family and church were the centers of JC’s life, and there were few things that brought him as much joy as the birth of his first grandchild, Derrick Douglas Harris. Two more grandchildren would follow.
In 1953, JC joined what was then a small company called Hewlett-Packard where he held various positions, including precision gear-maker in the machine shop. Over time, JC realized that his opportunities at HP were limited and limiting, in large part due to his lack of a college education or formal financial or management training; but he knew that he had untapped skills and knowledge and a desire to build and manage his own business. He left HP in 1968 and joined Otto Watkins as a partner in his construction business. Their business relationship would last for about a year, before JC decided to strike out on his own.
JC would subsequently receive his engineering license and, over time, his business grew and evolved from construction (single and multi-family homes) to global finance and intermediation of international oil and gas transactions. He established an investment company and, as his international business flourished, he traveled the globe - from Europe to Asia, Central America and Africa. Over the years, JC lived in the Bahamas, Panama, New York, Paris and London, with brief residencies in Italy and Singapore. His many clients included some of the largest global financial institutions as well as the Royal Family of Brunei.
In 1992, JC met Arnette White in London while attending a meeting at her workplace and they formed an immediate bond of friendship. Though they didn’t see each other again for two years, they stayed in touch. James finally returned to London where he resided for 10 years. During this time, he proposed marriage to Arnette, she accepted, and in 2004 they moved to California where they were joined together in holy matrimony later that year.
In 2013, they relocated to Austin, TX, and became members of Rehoboth Baptist Church, which his sister Lucille Simpon attended and where he was soon appointed Deacon. He also served as Sunday school teacher, head of Christian Education, and was an active participant in the convalescent ministry. He was also instrumental in the vision to relocate Rehoboth Baptist Church to a new church home. After all his world travels, he returned to where he began – he had come full circle. For all the words written in this tribute, when asked what he wanted people to know about him, JC summed it up succinctly with these words “I just want people to know that I did my best and tried to treat other people right”, and his advice to anyone was to “always put God first.”
JC was preceded in death by his parents, James and Maggie; his brother, George; and sisters, Lucille Simpson and Evelyn Hopkins. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife Arnette, his sons: Doug (Bill Van Parys), New York, New York, and James (Teresa), Gilroy, California; grandsons: Derrick Douglas Harris (Marsi), San Diego, California and Jameson Edward Harris, Menlo Park, California; granddaughter: Morgan Lindsay Harris, Menlo Park, California; great-granddaughters: Nelah Rose Harris and Isabella Lucia Harris, San Diego, California; a host of nieces and nephews, extended family, and those who adopted him as their father, grandpa, godfather, or mentor.
A visitation will be held from 10:00-11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 28, 2023, at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, 9300 Decker Ln, Austin, TX 78724; with services beginning at 11:00 a.m. Services will be live streamed to allow those unable to attend to participate. Mary Ellen Shaw - September 15, 1921 - February 28, 2023

Departed: 02/28/2023 (Austin)
Obituary Preview: Mary left a note: “Thanks, it’s been great being with you but I need to go Home now; they’re waiting for me.”
She left for her heavenly home on Tuesday, February 28, 2023, grateful for His care – past, present and future.
Mary was born in Pittsburg, Kansas, the youngest child of Steven and Mamie Shaw. She had three older brothers whose teasing sharpened her lifelong wit. Graduating from high school in 1938, she expected to work for a while, then marry and raise a family. But the Lord had other plans. He provided means for her to go to John Brown University. After graduation from JBU she earned a Master’s degree at Kansas State Teacher’s College and followed with graduate studies in Linguistics at the University of Oklahoma. Soon after that she joined Wycliffe Bible Translators and went with fellow Linguist, Helen Neuenswander, R.N. to work in one of the Mayan dialects of rural Guatemala. Together they analyzed the unwritten language, developed a practical alphabet for it, taught people to read and write, and ministered to them medically. They also started the process of translating the New Testament into the local Achi language.
During a furlough in the 60’s they taught at the Summer Institute of Linguistics in North Dakota. During the intervening winter they took graduate studies at the University of Texas in Austin where Mary received a fellowship and taught a laboratory course in International Phonetics.
Back in Guatemala they finished and published the New Testament and began building a hospital to replace their heavily over-used clinic. Nurse Helen passed away before the hospital was quite finished, but God provided another mission to complete the “Centro Medico Cristiano” and put it into service. Refurbished, it is still serving today.
Mary remained in Guatemala until age seventy, teaching some home Bible Studies and working with local Translators, eventually including a new Canadian team preparing to translate the Old Testament. In September 1991 she returned to Austin to share in the home of Jewel Sundbeck and her mother Tina. She joined and was very active in the First Evangelical Free Church (Currently Austin Oaks) where she sometimes taught the Women’s Adult Bible Fellowship class. Tina passed away in 1993. In 2016 Mary and Jewel moved into the Continental Retirement Community in Austin. They made many friends and enjoyed many events there. In December 2021, Mary moved to University Village Assisted Living & Memory Care Center. She remained there until she departed for Glory.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents and brothers. She is survived by loving nieces and nephews and their children, her good friend Jewel, and by numerous others whose lives Mary touched and blessed along the way.
Mary was fun! She had a great sense of humor, she loved telling jokes, she loved people and she enjoyed her life. She was a teacher, an encourager, with a heart of a servant and a spirit of true humility. She will be greatly missed.
A Visitation will be held at Austin Oaks Church, 4220 Monterey Oaks Drive, Austin, TX, from 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. with a Funeral Service starting at 2:00 p.m., on Monday, March 6, 2023.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a notice of someone's death, often published in a newspaper or online, that provides details about the person's life, achievements, family members, and the upcoming funeral or memorial services. It is both an announcement and a way to remember and honor the deceased.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as an important historical record and help to inform the community and extended network of the deceased's passing. They also provide closure for the family and friends, commemorating the person's life and signaling the start of the grieving process.

Who typically writes an obituary?

Obituaries are typically written by a family member or close friend of the deceased, or by the funeral home in consultation with the family. In some cases, individuals write their own obituaries in advance as part of their end-of-life planning.

What information should be included?

An obituary should include the full name of the deceased, their age, date of birth and death, a brief account of their life, achievements, and personality, surviving family members, funeral or memorial service details, and any preferred charities for donations.

Is there a difference between an obituary and a death notice?

Yes, a death notice is a simpler, shorter statement announcing someone's passing and the details of the funeral services, usually placed by the family directly in a newspaper, while an obituary is more detailed and includes a biographical sketch.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary widely depending on the publication's space limitations and the level of detail the family wishes to include. It typically ranges from a few sentences to several paragraphs.

Are obituaries published both in print and online?

Yes, obituaries can be published in both print newspapers and on digital platforms, such as online newspapers, memorial websites, and social media channels.

Can I write my own obituary before I pass away?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a way to ensure your life is celebrated in the way you desire, and it can also alleviate stress for your loved ones during a difficult time.

What tone should an obituary have?

While the tone of an obituary can reflect the personality of the deceased, it is typically formal and respectful. It may include poignant or humorous anecdotes, especially if they illustrate the character of the deceased person.

How to begin writing an obituary?

To start writing an obituary, gather important factual information about the deceased, including dates, family details, and career information. Begin with the announcement of death, followed by a brief life summary, details on family, and any service arrangements.

What are common obituary phrases?

Common phrases used in obituaries include "passed away," "survived by," "in lieu of flowers," and "will be dearly missed." Each of these phrases signals respect and love for the deceased.

Can an obituary include photos?

Yes, many obituaries include a photo of the deceased. This is typically a recent, clear headshot, but it can be any picture that the family feels best represents their loved one.

Is it necessary to mention the cause of death?

Mentioning the cause of death in an obituary is not necessary and is entirely at the discretion of the family. Many choose to omit this detail for privacy reasons.

How do I submit an obituary to a local newspaper or website?

To submit an obituary, contact the newspaper or website to inquire about their submission guidelines, costs, and any format requirements. Many publications offer online submission forms for convenience.

Are there cost considerations for publishing an obituary?

Yes, many newspapers charge a fee based on the length of the obituary and whether a photograph is included. Online obituaries can be less expensive or even free on some memorial websites.

What should you not include in an obituary?

Avoid including overly personal details or anything that could be used for identity theft, such as full addresses, social security numbers, or other sensitive personal information.

How does one handle an obituary for a controversial figure?

For controversial figures, it is best to remain factual and respectful, acknowledging the person's impact and noting significant aspects of their life without focusing on controversies or legal issues.

Should an obituary mention charitable donations?

If the deceased or the family has a specific charity they wish to support, it is common to mention this in the obituary, often phrased as, "In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to [Charity Name]."

Can friends and acquaintances submit additional information for an obituary?

While the immediate family typically prepares the final text, they may welcome anecdotes, remembrances, or photos from friends and acquaintances, which can be included if space permits or used during services.

How should surviving family members be listed?

Surviving family members are usually listed in order of closeness to the deceased, such as a spouse, children, siblings, and then extended family. Some obituaries also mention very close friends if appropriate.

What if there are errors in the published obituary?

If an error is found after publication, contact the publication as soon as possible to request a correction. Most newspapers have policies in place for correcting errors in obituaries.
