Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a notice of someone's death, often published in a newspaper or online, that provides details about the person's life, achievements, family members, and the upcoming funeral or memorial services. It is both an announcement and a way to remember and honor the deceased.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as an important historical record and help to inform the community and extended network of the deceased's passing. They also provide closure for the family and friends, commemorating the person's life and signaling the start of the grieving process.

Who typically writes an obituary?

Obituaries are typically written by a family member or close friend of the deceased, or by the funeral home in consultation with the family. In some cases, individuals write their own obituaries in advance as part of their end-of-life planning.

What information should be included?

An obituary should include the full name of the deceased, their age, date of birth and death, a brief account of their life, achievements, and personality, surviving family members, funeral or memorial service details, and any preferred charities for donations.

Is there a difference between an obituary and a death notice?

Yes, a death notice is a simpler, shorter statement announcing someone's passing and the details of the funeral services, usually placed by the family directly in a newspaper, while an obituary is more detailed and includes a biographical sketch.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary widely depending on the publication's space limitations and the level of detail the family wishes to include. It typically ranges from a few sentences to several paragraphs.

Are obituaries published both in print and online?

Yes, obituaries can be published in both print newspapers and on digital platforms, such as online newspapers, memorial websites, and social media channels.

Can I write my own obituary before I pass away?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a way to ensure your life is celebrated in the way you desire, and it can also alleviate stress for your loved ones during a difficult time.

What tone should an obituary have?

While the tone of an obituary can reflect the personality of the deceased, it is typically formal and respectful. It may include poignant or humorous anecdotes, especially if they illustrate the character of the deceased person.

How to begin writing an obituary?

To start writing an obituary, gather important factual information about the deceased, including dates, family details, and career information. Begin with the announcement of death, followed by a brief life summary, details on family, and any service arrangements.

What are common obituary phrases?

Common phrases used in obituaries include "passed away," "survived by," "in lieu of flowers," and "will be dearly missed." Each of these phrases signals respect and love for the deceased.

Can an obituary include photos?

Yes, many obituaries include a photo of the deceased. This is typically a recent, clear headshot, but it can be any picture that the family feels best represents their loved one.

Is it necessary to mention the cause of death?

Mentioning the cause of death in an obituary is not necessary and is entirely at the discretion of the family. Many choose to omit this detail for privacy reasons.

How do I submit an obituary to a local newspaper or website?

To submit an obituary, contact the newspaper or website to inquire about their submission guidelines, costs, and any format requirements. Many publications offer online submission forms for convenience.

Are there cost considerations for publishing an obituary?

Yes, many newspapers charge a fee based on the length of the obituary and whether a photograph is included. Online obituaries can be less expensive or even free on some memorial websites.

What should you not include in an obituary?

Avoid including overly personal details or anything that could be used for identity theft, such as full addresses, social security numbers, or other sensitive personal information.

How does one handle an obituary for a controversial figure?

For controversial figures, it is best to remain factual and respectful, acknowledging the person's impact and noting significant aspects of their life without focusing on controversies or legal issues.

Should an obituary mention charitable donations?

If the deceased or the family has a specific charity they wish to support, it is common to mention this in the obituary, often phrased as, "In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to [Charity Name]."

Can friends and acquaintances submit additional information for an obituary?

While the immediate family typically prepares the final text, they may welcome anecdotes, remembrances, or photos from friends and acquaintances, which can be included if space permits or used during services.

How should surviving family members be listed?

Surviving family members are usually listed in order of closeness to the deceased, such as a spouse, children, siblings, and then extended family. Some obituaries also mention very close friends if appropriate.

What if there are errors in the published obituary?

If an error is found after publication, contact the publication as soon as possible to request a correction. Most newspapers have policies in place for correcting errors in obituaries.
