Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written announcement of a person's death, often published in a newspaper or online. It typically includes a brief biography of the deceased, information about the funeral or memorial service, and details about survivors and family members.

Is there a difference between an obituary and a death notice?

Yes, an obituary is generally a more detailed account of a person's life and is often written by family members or a professional writer. A death notice, on the other hand, is a shorter, more official statement of death, often listing just the bare facts, and is usually arranged and paid for by the family.

Who writes an obituary?

An obituary can be written by a family member, friend, or sometimes by a journalist or obituary writer at the publication where it will appear.

What information is included in an obituary?

An obituary usually includes the full name of the deceased, age at death, place of residence, notable career or life achievements, information on the funeral or memorial service, and the names of surviving family members. Some may also include cause of death and personal anecdotes or messages.

Is it necessary to publish an obituary?

Publishing an obituary is not a legal requirement, but it is a traditional way to inform society of a person's passing and to honor their life.

Where are obituaries published?

Obituaries are commonly published in local newspapers, on online memorial sites, and on the websites of funeral homes. Some families also choose to share obituaries on social media.

How soon after a death should an obituary be published?

Obituaries are typically published within a week after a person's death, allowing time for friends and the wider community to be informed before any funeral or memorial services.

Can an obituary be published before a funeral service?

Yes, obituaries are often published before funeral services to inform potential attendees and to allow friends and family to make necessary arrangements to attend.

How do you write a heartfelt obituary?

To write a heartfelt obituary, share personal stories, highlight the person's character, their passions, and the impact they had on others. It's important to be genuine and to reflect the personality of the deceased.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost varies greatly depending on the publication, the length of the obituary, and the region. It's best to contact the specific newspaper or website for their rates. Many online platforms offer free or low-cost options.

How long should an obituary be?

There is no set length, but a typical obituary is usually between 200 and 500 words. The length can vary depending on the life story, accomplishments of the deceased, and the space available in the publication.

What should you avoid including in an obituary?

You should avoid including overly private information, such as financial assets or details that might be inappropriate for public disclosure. Be cautious also about including information that could lead to identity theft, like the exact date of birth.

Can I add a photograph with an obituary?

Yes, most newspapers and online sites allow you to add a photograph with an obituary. Choose a picture that represents the person well and honors their memory.

Should an obituary include the cause of death?

Including the cause of death is a personal choice. Some families prefer to include it, especially if it pertains to a public health issue or a cause the family wants to bring awareness to, while others may choose to keep this detail private.

Can an obituary be updated after it is published?

Physical newspapers cannot be updated once printed, but online obituaries can often be updated or amended if necessary. Check the policy of the publication or website for specifics.

Do all religions and cultures follow the tradition of posting obituaries?

No, the practice of posting obituaries varies widely among different cultures and religions. Some may have unique traditions for honoring the deceased that don't include a public obituary.

Can friends write and submit an obituary?

Yes, friends can write and submit an obituary with the consent of the deceased's family. However, the family usually has the final say on what is published.

How do you handle disputes among family members regarding the obituary content?

Family disputes can be sensitive when it comes to crafting an obituary. It's important for family members to communicate openly and to try to reach a consensus that respects the wishes of the deceased and the family as a whole.

Is it appropriate to mention donations or charities in an obituary?

It is quite common to mention a preferred charity for donations in lieu of flowers. This can honor the memory of the deceased and help causes they cared about.

What if the deceased did not want an obituary?

If the deceased explicitly did not want an obituary, their wishes should be respected. Some families choose to have a private ceremony or use other methods to inform close friends and family about the death.

How can an obituary be made more personal?

Personalizing an obituary can be done by including nicknames, personal stories, quotes, or poems that were meaningful to the deceased, and by mentioning special relationships they had throughout their life.
