Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice of a person's death, typically published in a newspaper or online. It serves to inform the public of the passing and usually includes a brief biography of the deceased, details about their family, and information regarding funeral or memorial services.

How is an obituary different from a death notice?

A death notice is a more straightforward, brief announcement of a person's passing, often including minimal details such as the name, age, date of death, and information about the services. Unlike obituaries, death notices are usually paid for by the family and are more of a formal notification rather than a tribute or life story.

What is typically included in an obituary?

A standard obituary includes the deceased's full name, age, date and place of birth, date and cause of death (if the family wishes to include it), a brief account of their life, accomplishments, personality traits, surviving family members, and details about the funeral, memorial services, or wake.

Who writes an obituary?

Obituaries can be written by family members, friends, or funeral directors. Sometimes, if the deceased was a notable public figure or had an impact on the community, a journalist might write the obituary.

Where should an obituary be published?

An obituary can be published in local newspapers, online obituary websites, social media, or through funeral home websites. It might also appear in a national newspaper or publication in the case of a prominent individual.

How long after a death is an obituary published?

Obituaries are typically published within a few days after death, but the timing can vary based on newspaper deadlines, the family's wishes, or logistical reasons. The goal is often to have the obituary appear before any services are held.

Can an obituary be written before someone dies?

Yes, sometimes obituaries are pre-written, especially for individuals who are elderly or terminally ill. This can be done by the person themselves, their family, or a professional writer, ensuring that their life story is told accurately and according to their wishes.

Is there a standard length for an obituary?

There is no strict length requirement for an obituary, but most are concise, usually between 200 and 500 words. The length can depend on the medium of publication, cost considerations, and the amount of information the family wishes to include.

Do you have to pay to publish an obituary?

Most newspapers and other publications charge a fee to publish an obituary, which can vary based on length, circulation, and whether a photograph is included. Some online platforms may offer free or lower-cost options.

Is it mandatory to include a photo with an obituary?

It is not mandatory to include a photo, but it is a common practice as it helps readers to visually identify and remember the deceased. If a photo is used, it's often a recent portrait that best reflects the person's life.

Can friends contribute to writing an obituary?

Yes, friends can contribute anecdotes, personal stories, or help with details. Collaboration with those who knew the deceased well can result in a richer, more personalized obituary.

What if there is a dispute over the obituary content?

If there's a dispute, families should try to reach a consensus or compromise on the content. In sensitive situations, the funeral director or a neutral third party can offer guidance. The ultimate decision typically lies with the person responsible for making arrangements or the executor of the estate.

How do we decide what to include or leave out?

Deciding what to include in an obituary involves balancing respect for the deceased with the interests and sensitivities of the survivors. It's important to include key life events, significant relationships, and personal traits while also considering privacy and the feelings of family members.

Should the cause of death be included?

Whether to include the cause of death is a personal choice. Some families prefer to share this information, especially if the deceased was involved in a public health awareness cause, while others choose to keep it private.

How can we honor a deceased loved one's unique personality in their obituary?

To honor a loved one's unique personality, consider sharing anecdotes, favorite quotes, hobbies, or signature sayings. Highlight the distinct qualities that made the person special to those who knew them.

What if the deceased didn't want an obituary?

If the deceased expressed a wish not to have an obituary published, their wishes should be respected. Alternatives could be a private family notice or an internal communication within organizations or communities where they were involved.

Can we include charitable donations or special requests?

Yes, it is common to include a request for charitable donations in lieu of flowers or to direct readers to support a cause important to the deceased. Details for donation instructions can also be included.

How should we handle mentioning survivors and predeceased family members?

List the survivors and predeceased family members by their relationship to the deceased, usually starting with the closest relatives. Full names are given to avoid confusion, and some families choose to include in-laws and close friends.

Are there any privacy concerns with publishing an obituary?

Yes, sharing details publicly can have privacy implications. It's important to consider identity theft risks and the feelings of those mentioned. Information like addresses should be omitted, and the level of detail about the survivors should be carefully considered.

Is it appropriate to use humor in an obituary?

Humor can be appropriate if it aligns with the deceased's personality and is done tastefully. Anecdotes that bring a smile or capture the person's spirit can be a touching addition to any obituary.

What should we do if we find an error in an obituary after it's published?

If an error is found after publication, contact the newspaper or platform as soon as possible to request a correction. Most will be willing to correct significant errors in subsequent issues or online updates.
