Martha A. Greathouse - April 25, 1943 - April 16, 2024

Departed: 04/16/2024 (Slidell)
Obituary Preview: Martha A. Greathouse, affectionately known as G-Ma, departed this world on April 16, 2024, at the age of 80, just nine days shy of her 81st birthday. Her journey began during WWII, on April 25, 1943, in Kansas City, Missouri, when she was born at a maternity home for unwed mothers. Martha was chosen for adoption by the late Dr. Samuel S. Klassen and Ruth V. Stenzel Klassen of Marion County, Kansas. Her childhood was filled with joy and love. She later married her first husband, William A. Andrews, and her second husband, Cecil L. Greathouse, both of whom preceded her in death. Martha, who was employed as an insurance adjuster, resided in Kansas City until relocating to Slidell, Louisiana, in 1997 to live with her daughter and family for years, creating many treasured memories. Staying true to her roots, Martha remained an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan.
Martha touched the lives of many and will be fondly remembered for her loving nature, huge personality, and excellent baking skills. She loved her family and also her cigarettes, so much that a Google Maps image caught G-Ma outside smoking. Martha ran on Bailey's, coffee, and chocolate, and she could often be found enjoying the slot machines. She was known for her caring nature and generosity, taking care of her dogs and grand-dogs for many years. After her grandson's father passed, Martha helped to raise Jake. Martha motto was," Why do today what you can put off until tomorrow!" Maybe we should all take a lesson out of her playbook and slow down and smell the roses.
Martha is the cherished mother of Dr. Wesley A. Andrews (Mitsi) of Norman, Oklahoma, and Michelle A. Kennedy of Slidell, Louisiana; beloved mother-in-law of Kurt M. Ose and the late Justin Wayne Kennedy; the epitome of cool grandma to William Andrews, Courtney Andrews, and Jacob Wayne Kennedy (Jennifer); adored sister of Robert S. Klassen; sister-in-law of Donna Klassen and Helen Klassen; and treasured aunt to a host of nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind many extended family members and friends whom she loved greatly. Martha will be greatly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her. Memories and condolences maybe expressed at www.AudubonFuneralHome.com

Jules “Pat” Massarini - March 07, 1937 - April 04, 2024

Departed: 04/04/2024 (Slidell)
Obituary Preview: Jules “Pat” Massarini, age 87, of Lumberton, Mississippi, passed away peacefully at his home in the arms of his wife and best friend, Carol, on April 4, 2024. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jules Sidney and Claire Silbernagel Massarini.
Pat is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Carol Ann Hoffman Massarini; his daughter, Rhonda M. Barrilleaux (Larry) and Karen M. Farley; grandchildren, L.J. Amedee (Nicole), Sabrina Spiers (Guy), Christi Leblanc, Brittany Cassaday, and John Farley; seven great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren, affectionately known as Paw Paw to some. He is also survived by three sisters, Sylvia M. Hansel, Marilyn M. Meehan, and Janet M. Giroir; a sister-in-law, Rose Hoffman Cormier; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and wonderful lifelong friends.
After 33 years, Pat was retired from Towel and Linen Rental Company. In addition to his job, he also built two houses, with the help from a lot of good friends. He would stop by construction sites and learn from the workers how to do certain things. Pat always had street smarts. When he was young, he had a newspaper route and he shined shoes to make money to play pinball. A country boy at heart, he loved driving his tractor. Pat was an all-around good guy. If anyone needed help, they just had to ask. He would be there. He loved wood working and before he got too sick, built bird houses to give to friends. Through the years, he gave away some of his most treasured fretwork. Pat even planted a large vegetable garden to share with friends.
Pat loved dancing, especially with Carol. You never saw one without the other. Pat always said the secret to a happy marriage is two words, “Yes, dear.” Pat and Carol met at a bowling alley. He was in a men’s league; she was in a mixed league. After bowling, they continued into the lounge to dance (of course). He always told everyone that Carol had to go downtown to find a good dancer. Pat formed a group of dancers, which started out as Pat’s Dancers, and then eventually became the Elks Line Dancers. They entertained and visited with residents of assisted living facilities and nursing homes, such as Azalea Estates, where he visited as Santa Claus with Carol as Mrs. Claus. They also visited with children at libraries as Santa and Mrs. Claus and assisted in lighting the Christmas tree at Lumberton City Hall and rode in the Christmas parade.
Pat lived in Slidell, LA until Hurricane Katrina hit. He was in the process of building a hunting camp in Lumberton, MS, where he and Carol evacuated to. After a couple of years there, they decided to make Lumberton their home. They continued spending a lot of time in Slidell with their many friends, but met some wonderful friends in Lumberton (line dancing, of course). They made friends everywhere they went.
Pat was kind to everyone and made friends wherever he went. He was one of the founding members of the Just Came Here to Dance Club. He was a lifetime member of Slidell Elks Lodge #2321 for 33 years, where he chaired many programs including: the Veterans programs, Law and Order Night, GUMBO (games uniting mind and body), Veterans Remembrance Night, Hands Across the Border for Drug Awareness with the Elks of Mississippi, and co-chaired the annual Veterans Golf Tournament. Pat was a Duke and King of the Slidellians Women’s Civic Club and a Duke in the Bayou Liberty Civic Club. He was past King of Amor and Atreus, and he was chosen as Grand Marshall 0f the Slidell St. Patrick’s Day parade. Pat received the President’s Call to Service Award for his dedication to America’s heroes. At the Elks Lodge, he was awarded Elks Citizen of the Year, Elk of the Year several times, and Elks National Veterans Services Commission Volunteer of the Year. He was the first recipient of the Steve G. Jenkinson Jr. Louisiana Elk of the Year.
Pat enjoyed cooking and was the winner of the first Slidell Elks Lodge Gumbo Cooking Contest. Two of his favorite things to cook were seafood gumbo and deer chili. Pat was an avid hunter and fisherman and lived life to the fullest. On a trip to Alaska, he zip-lined on the highest one, higher than the Empire State building. Pat lived a full and rewarding life until the last few years, when he had several health problems. He fought the war, but lost the battle. He was loved by many and will be missed by all.

Departed: 03/26/2024 (Slidell)
Obituary Preview: Diane Teresa Crowson Hayes, a beacon of laughter and faith, passed away on March 26, 2024, in Picayune, Mississippi, at the age of 70. Born on September 26, 1953, in the vibrant city of New Orleans, Louisiana, and raised in Chalmette, Louisiana, Diane's life was a testament to the joy and selflessness she brought into the world.
Diane is the cherished daughter of the late Mildred Rodriguez Crowson and Harold J. Crowson Sr. She was a loving sister to her late siblings, Sandra Aias and Gary Crowson, who undoubtedly welcomed her with open arms.
Diane is survived by her loving husband of 21 years, Daniel Randy Hayes, who stood by her side as a partner and best friend. Her spirit lives on through her siblings, Mildred Crowson Ducote (Earl) , Harold Crowson Jr. (Brenda), Larry Crowson (Linda), Paul Crowson, Ricky Crowson, and Daryl Crowson. Their bond, unbroken by time or distance, remains a source of comfort and strength to all who knew them.

Her grandchildren, Joshua, Shannon, Michal, McKenzie (Cole), Johnny, Brianna, Aubrey, Graham, Christian, Darbejo, Channing, and Adler---were the light of her life, and she cherished every moment spent with them. The recent addition of her great-grandson, Callahan, brought her immense pride and happiness. He will grow up hearing tales of his remarkable great-grandmother and the love she had for her family.
A woman of faith, Diane was an active and devoted member of St. Barnabas Anglican Church. Her ability to weave humor and grace into the fabric of her church community will be fondly remembered.
Diane was an avid fisherwoman who believed that a bad day fishing, along side her beloved dog, Zeba, still beat a good day doing just about anything else. Her love for the sport was only rivaled by the joy she found in spending time with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren, who were the true catch of her life.
Described by those who loved her as funny, faith-filled, and selfless, Diane's presence was a gift, and her absence will be deeply felt by all who were fortunate enough to cross her path.
Diane Teresa Crowson Hayes was a woman who lived fully, laughed loudly, and loved deeply. She taught us all that life doesn't have to be taken too seriously and that the best way to honor her is to keep the laughter going. So, let's raise a rod to Diane, who's probably up there now, telling the angels how to bait a hook and cracking jokes that have heaven in stitches. Diane deserves to be beautifully remembered and will be deeply missed, but her legacy of love, laughter, and faith will endure forever. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a celebration of Diane’s life on Saturday, March 30, 2024 from noon to 2:00 p.m. at Audubon Funeral Home in Slidell. Gwendolyn Ann Miller Jones - July 06, 1959 - March 24, 2024

Departed: 03/24/2024 (Slidell)
Obituary Preview: Gwendolyn Ann Miller Jones, of Slidell, Louisiana, passed away after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer on March 24, 2024, at the age of 64. From the moment our mother received her diagnosis, she remained determined to fight as hard as she could. When anyone else would have broken, she stayed strong. Even though she would not be cured, we are forever grateful to experience what resilience and perseverance truly look like. She did not believe in quitting or giving up and she definitely exemplified that.
Gwendolyn was a native of New Orleans, Louisiana, born on July 6, 1959, to her parents, the late Annamae Rose Miller and George William Miller. She is the loving mother of Shawn Jones (Jennifer), Aaron Jones (Veronica), and Desiree Jones Harris (Bo). She is the proud grandmother of Kaylan (Jose), Victoria, Dakota, Khloe, Avrie, Tyler, and Landen; and the great-grandmother of Kolton. She also leaves behind, to cherish her memory, her siblings, Carol Mangipano, Clarence Miller (MaryAnn), Linda Villa (Chris), Jules Miller (Paula), and Cindy Green (Bill); her dog, Duke, and an abundance of extended family members and friends whom she loved deeply. Along with her parents, Gwendolyn is also preceded in death by her devoted husband of 46 years, Michael Jones, and two of her siblings, George Miller and Barbara Drain.
Gwendolyn loved her family fiercely and you could often find her spending time with her children, grandchildren, and her siblings. No matter the occasion, whether it be a birthday party, holiday, or just a regular Sunday dinner, her favorite thing to do was to be surrounded by her loving family. While raising her children, she was a homemaker, which seemed to come so natural to her and she thoroughly enjoyed taking care of her family especially when it came to cooking delicious meals. As her children grew up and started having their own children, she began helping with her grandchildren whenever she could, and she cared for her mother later in her life as well. Gwendolyn spent majority of her life taking care of everyone she loved. She had a heart of gold, and we cherish the love we were able to receive from her.
Gwendolyn had a love for big family vacations with her children and grandchildren as well as small weekend trips with her sister, Linda, and brother-in-law, Chris. She loved seeing new places and revisiting places she had been to many times such as Walt Disney World in Florida, which was her absolute favorite place to go! She also loved shopping and going out to eat. Making memories and loving her family were the things that were most important to her. She supported her children in all of the activities they were a part of and this was no different for her grandchildren. She would show up with a smile on her face and she was so proud of every accomplishment and milestone that she was blessed to be a part of. There isn’t much she wouldn’t do for her family and we just hope she felt as much love from all of us as we felt from her. Although we know she is in a better place with our father, her absence will be missed by everyone that knows and loves her. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Saturday, April 13, 2024, beginning at 1:00 p.m. at The Village Church located at 29180 U.S Hwy 190, Lacombe, Louisiana 70445. J.V. was born on January 21, 1936 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He grew up in Clinton, Mississippi, before his family relocated to Slidell, Louisiana, his junior year of high school. At Slidell High School, J.V. played basketball, baseball, and football, garnering a reputation for his versatile athletic abilities. In 1953, he was selected for the Louisiana Class A All-State football team, representing Slidell High. The following year, J.V. attended Tulane University on a football scholarship, playing as a running back for the Green Wave. However, J.V. shone equally as brightly in the classroom as he did on the field. He served as president of Tulane’s School of Engineering and earned the Colonel Fox Award for his accomplishments in the civil engineering program. He was also on the Tulane Honor Board, treasurer of T Club, and was selected for the 1959 Tulane Hall of Fame. Additionally, J.V. represented Tulane on a Student Council on National Affairs that included more than 100 universities throughout North America.
On October 3, 1959, J.V. married his high school and college sweetheart, Grace Fritchie. The couple moved to Williamsburg, Virginia, where J.V. served in the United States Army and began his engineering career. From 1960 to 1962, they lived in Conway, Arkansas, where J.V. built 18 Titan 2 missiles for Omni Construction Company. Afterward, the Burkes moved to San Juan, Puerto Rico, where J.V. worked as an engineer for R.P. Farnsworth, building the Sheraton Hotel, a local hospital, and the famous Radar Telescope in Arecibo, Puerto Rico.
In 1964, they returned to Slidell, and J.V. formed J.V. Burkes & Associates, a civil engineering firm. When work slowed down in 1967, J.V. became City Engineer and Director of Public Works for the City of Slidell. In 1968, he formed a mosquito control district for the eighth and ninth wards that later included south St. Tammany Parish, and in 1969, he helped the city rebuild after Hurricane Camille. When engineering work picked up again in 1972, J.V. went back to heading J.V. Burkes & Associates full-time. He contributed design work for NASA’s Stennis space program, and also designed many Slidell neighborhoods, such as Cross Gates, Country Club, and Westchester, as well as neighborhoods elsewhere on the Northshore and in Mississippi.
J.V. was instrumental in bringing soccer to all the high schools in St. Tammany Parish in the early 1980s, championing the sport for both boys and girls in the area. For years, he coached the Northshore High School Lady Panthers Soccer Team and served as a travel coordinator for the U.S. Women’s Olympic Development Program. He often coached multiple teams at the same time and was proud to coach his daughter, Ginny, and son, Sean, when they were in school. J.V. was an avid reader, history buff, and lifelong learner who always stayed up-to-date on the latest music, art, and technology. Along with his wife, Grace, he was an active member of Christ Episcopal Church, as well as a doting grandparent. Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a published notice of a person's death, often with a brief biography of the deceased. It's a way to publicly commemorate the life of the loved one and inform the community of their passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as important historical records. They help friends, acquaintances, and extended family members know about a loved one’s death, the details of their funeral service, and highlight significant accomplishments in their life.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

An obituary typically includes the full name of the deceased, their date of birth, date of death, a short biography, details about the funeral or memorial service, and information about surviving family members.

How long after a death is an obituary published?

An obituary is usually published within a week of a person's death to allow for timely notification before the funeral service, though the exact timing can vary.

Who writes obituaries?

Obituaries can be written by family members, friends, or the funeral home handling the arrangements. In some cases, individuals might even write their own obituary in advance.

Where are obituaries published?

Obituaries are commonly published in local newspapers, online obituary websites, funeral home webpages, and sometimes in national publications, depending on the deceased's prominence.

Is there a difference between an obituary and a death notice?

Yes. A death notice is typically a shorter, more formal announcement of a person's death and funeral details, while an obituary also includes a biography and personal tributes.

How can I write a heartfelt obituary?

To write a heartfelt obituary, include personal anecdotes, mention the qualities that made the deceased unique, and celebrate their life's achievements. Speak from the heart and focus on what made your loved one special.

Can obituaries be rejected or edited by newspaper editors?

Yes, newspaper editors review obituaries and may edit them for length, clarity, or to meet editorial policies. They can also reject an obituary if it doesn't meet publication standards or the guidelines of the newspaper.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost to publish an obituary can vary widely depending on the publication, length of the obituary, and any additional features, such as photos or extra space.

Is there a standard format for writing an obituary?

While there's no one-size-fits-all format for obituaries, they generally start with the announcement of death, followed by personal details, information about the funeral services, and a list of surviving family members.

What should you avoid including in an obituary?

Avoid including overly sensitive personal information that could be misused, such as exact addresses or financial information, and consider privacy concerns when mentioning surviving relatives.

Can an obituary be updated after it has been published?

Typically, once an obituary is published in print, it cannot be updated. Online obituaries may offer more flexibility for updates or corrections.

Are photographs included in obituaries?

Many obituaries include a photograph of the deceased. The inclusion of a photo often depends on cost considerations and the policies of the newspaper or online service.

How can friends and family contribute to an obituary?

Friends and family can contribute to an obituary by sharing their memories, photos, and personal stories of the deceased with the person writing the obituary.

Is it acceptable to include charitable donation information in an obituary?

Yes, it's common to include information about requested charitable donations in lieu of flowers. Be sure to provide the name and address of the charity.

Should an obituary include cause of death?

Including the cause of death is a personal choice and is not required. When deciding whether to include it, consider the preferences of the deceased and the surviving family members.

Can an obituary be funny or unconventional?

Yes, an obituary can reflect the personality of the deceased. If they were known for their sense of humor, an unconventional or funny obituary might be entirely appropriate and welcomed by those who knew them.

What is the deadline for submitting an obituary to a newspaper?

The deadline for submitting an obituary to a newspaper varies but is often one or two days before the desired date of publication to allow time for editing and formatting.

How do I ensure accuracy in an obituary?

To ensure accuracy, collect information from reliable sources, double-check dates and names, ask family members to review the obituary, and confirm details with the funeral home if necessary.

Can an obituary be too long?

An obituary can be as long as a family wishes and can afford, considering publication costs. However, a concise, well-written obituary that captures the essence of the individual is often most effective.

Is it possible to publish an obituary for someone who died a long time ago?

While somewhat uncommon, it is possible to publish an obituary for someone who died a long time ago, especially if no notice was published at the time of death, or if the family wishes to commemorate a special anniversary.

What are the benefits of an online obituary over a print one?

An online obituary offers a permanent record that can be accessed globally, allows for the inclusion of more content, such as pictures and stories, is often more affordable, and can be easily shared on social media.
