Elinore A. Myers - January 29, 1939 - February 17, 2024

Departed: 02/17/2024 (Rittman)
Obituary Preview: Elinore A Myers (Shoup), age 85, of Rittman passed away Saturday February 17, 2024 at her home following a courageous and hard-fought battle with pancreatic and liver cancer.
Elinore was born on January 29, 1939 on the family farm in Orrville, Ohio, to the late Lee and Irene (Simpkins) Shoup. She graduated from Orrville High School in 1957. Elinore's mom Irene made sure her girls were going to go to college since her brother's careers working the family farm were already established. Elinore left for Ohio University where she became a member of the Marching 110. As a freshman she became first chair trumpet, which was a great accomplishment for a girl in the 1950's. Her love of music was a lifelong calling.
It was at Ohio University Elinore met the love of her life, R. Keith Myers. He had to leave Ohio, after his graduation from Davis Business College, for his new job in California. After Elinore's graduation, she hopped a train for Los Angeles, CA to meet up with Keith. They drove to Las Vegas, where they got married at The Little White Chapel.
Her first child Debbie was born in 1961. Soon after, Elinore started her career as a social worker in Los Angeles, fighting for the safety and welfare of children. Before the birth of her son Brian in October 1965, working in Los Angeles as a social worker was a very dangerous job, including working through the Watts Riots in August of 1965.
Soon after Brian was born, Keith's job moved the family several times including San Francisco and Long Island, N.Y. Elinore wanted to be close to her family again in Ohio. So, in 1971, they moved to Hinckley where they raised their family and Keith was able to commute to Manhattan when needed. After Keith's passing in 1978, Elinore devoted her time to her children and always made sure they were taken care of. She did a very fine job! Elinore loved her flower beds and her vegetable garden. She was so proud of her heirloom tomatoes. Elinore worked for Home Instead Senior Care in Wadsworth in her later years where she helped seniors in their homes and would drive them to appointments. It's here that she met a lady named Lilly that she helped care for. Lilly entrusted Elinore with her heirloom tomato seeds that her mother had sewn into her clothes when they fled Germany during World War 2. We want to thank Home Instead in Wadsworth for the wonderful care they provided our mom. A special thanks goes out to Deborah!
Elinore was a member of St Lukes Anglican Church in Ghent/Copley where she was the church pianist for 49 years. Her lifelong faith in Jesus Christ kept her strong these past 2 years. Just before her diagnosis, she joined the Stage 4 cancer group at St. Lukes as a volunteer. She helped make care bags that are given to cancer patients at area hospitals. Unknown to her, she would one day receive a bag with a hand written note that she wrote herself. Recently she began attending LifeSong Fellowship, closer to her home, in Wadsworth. We want to thank Rev. Andrea Orchard for always being there for our mom.
She is survived by her two children, Debbie (Dennis) White, Brian (Lisa) Myers; grandchildren Michael MacDowell (Dorena), Sheena Britenriker, Robert MacDowell (Kristen), Demi White, Michael Myers, Casey Myers (Myles), Amanda Iwaszkiw (Zack), Michael Iwaszkiw (Leah), Jason Iwaszkiw (Sarah), Bryan Iwaszkiw (Brittany); great-grandchildren Nevaeh, Jonathan, Sierra, Rhyley, Austin, Audrey, Tyler, Keira, Joe, Mason, Jaylee, Ella, Belle, Chance and Autumn; sister Arlene (Glenn) Jambor,  brother in-law Ben Mackenzie and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Robert "Keith" Myers, brothers Bill and Robert Shoup, sister Marlene Mackenzie, brother in-law Pete Stamberger and sister in-laws Dorothy and Clara Jean Shoup.
Friends and family may call on Monday, February 26, 2024 from 5-7 PM at Auble-Gillman Funeral home, 360 W. Sunset Dr. Rittman.
Services will be held Tuesday February 27, 2024 at 11 AM at LifeSong Fellowship Church, 146 College St. Wadsworth with Rev. Andrea Orchard officiating and services will be live streamed at facebook.com/AubleFuneralHome. Burial will follow at Crown Hill Cemetery in Orrville. Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written announcement of someone's death, often including a brief biography, details about the funeral or memorial services, and information about the surviving family members. It serves as a way to honor the deceased and inform the community of their passing.

Where are obituaries published?

Obituaries are usually published in newspapers, both in print and online, as well as on dedicated memorial websites. They may also be shared on social media platforms or announced in community spaces, such as churches or neighborhood bulletin boards.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

An obituary typically includes a detailed biography and personal anecdotes, whereas a death notice is a shorter announcement that strictly relays the information of a person's death, the time and place of the services, and some basic details like names of surviving relatives.

Who writes an obituary?

An obituary can be written by family members, friends, or funeral directors. Sometimes a journalist or a professional writer may be enlisted to craft the obituary, especially for well-known individuals.

What should be included in an obituary?

An obituary typically includes the full name of the deceased, dates of birth and death, a brief account of their life and achievements, information about the funeral or memorial services, and names of surviving family members. Personal anecdotes, quotes, or messages may also be included to pay tribute to the individual's life and legacy.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary greatly. Some are brief, just a few lines long, while others may span several paragraphs. The length often depends on the amount of information the family wishes to share, publication space, and budget considerations.

Can I include a photo with an obituary?

Yes, most publications allow a photo to be included with an obituary. Some families opt to use a recent photo, while others prefer a picture from the deceased's younger years.

Is there a standard format for writing an obituary?

There is no one-size-fits-all format for obituaries, but many start with the announcement of death, followed by biographical information, details about the services, a list of survivors, special thanks or acknowledgments, and sometimes a charitable request for donations in lieu of flowers.

How do I write an obituary that is both informative and sensitive?

Writing an informative and sensitive obituary involves finding a balance between detailing the person's life and achievements while also honoring the emotions of those who are grieving. Be honest, compassionate, and respectful, and consider highlighting aspects of the person's life that would be most meaningful to friends and family.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary can vary widely based on the publication, its reach (local or national), the length of the obituary, and whether or not a photo is included. Some newspapers charge by the word, by the line, or by the column inch, while others offer flat rate packages.

Are there any resources to help write an obituary?

Many funeral homes provide guidance on writing obituaries, and there are numerous online resources with templates and tips to help you craft a thoughtful remembrance. Professional obituary writing services are also available for those who need more assistance.

When should an obituary be submitted for publication?

An obituary should be submitted for publication as soon as possible after the death, typically within a day or two, to allow time for friends and community members to make arrangements to attend services. However, the timeframe can vary based on publication deadlines and the date of the services.

Can I include personal messages or quotes in an obituary?

Absolutely. Personal messages, quotations, and verses that reflect the beliefs or personality of the deceased can add a meaningful and personal touch to an obituary.

How can family members ensure accuracy in an obituary?

Accuracy in an obituary is crucial. Family members should verify all factual information, such as dates and names, and consider having multiple people review the obituary before submission to catch any errors.

Is it necessary to mention the cause of death in an obituary?

Mentioning the cause of death is a personal choice. Some families prefer to include this information, while others choose to keep it private. Either option is acceptable and should be respected.

How do obituaries handle sensitive topics such as divorce, estrangement, or controversial aspects of the deceased's life?

When addressing sensitive topics, it's important to be respectful and considerate. Focus on the positive aspects of the deceased's life and the impact they had on those they loved. It's not necessary to include every detail of a person's life, especially if it could cause additional pain or discomfort to the family.

What should be done if an error is found in an already published obituary?

If an error is discovered in an obituary after publication, contact the newspaper or website as soon as possible to correct the mistake. Most publications are willing to make minor changes to the online versions and may offer a corrected reprint in the next issue.

How can the legacy of the deceased be honored through an obituary?

An obituary can honor the legacy of the deceased by focusing on their accomplishments, the values they cherished, the relationships they nurtured, and the difference they made in their community or field of work. It's an opportunity to celebrate their life and the imprint they left on the world.

Can friends or community members contribute to writing an obituary?

Yes, friends and community members can contribute stories, anecdotes, or other information that can be incorporated into the obituary. Their insights can help paint a fuller picture of the deceased's life and impact.

Should funeral or memorial service details be included in an obituary?

Yes, including the date, time, and location of the funeral or memorial service in the obituary is standard practice as it allows those who knew the deceased to attend and pay their respects. If the services are private, it's appropriate to indicate this as well.

What can be done to prevent mistakes when writing and submitting an obituary?

To minimize mistakes, write the obituary carefully and review it several times. Have family members or close friends proofread it for accuracy. When submitting, follow the publication's guidelines precisely and double-check all entered information. Clear communication with the funeral director or the publication's obituary department can also help ensure accuracy.
