Dakota Shawn Dillon - August 05, 2004 - December 15, 2023

Departed: 12/15/2023 (Malvern)
Obituary Preview: Dakota (Kota) Shawn Dillon
Blessed to us on August 5, 2004, and was reclaimed by Heaven on December 15, 2023.
Dakota, or Kota as most called him, was born in Odessa, Texas to parents Dale and Melanie Dillon of Colorado City in his early years of growth and development with friends through his second-grade year of school. Family relocation led to the city of Hamlin, Texas where Dakota would remain until the family relocated to Arkansas in his mid-eight grade year. While in Hamlin, Dakota attended the First Baptist Church and was baptized to the Lord's service in September of 2014 by Then Pastor John Powell. Dakota was an active member of Troop Hamlin like Boy Scouts, but truly better. There Dakota learned outdoor skills, teamwork and faith as well as many other things a young boy should know to become special. Thank you Dan Byerly and Troop, he loved you all and the adventures you shared.
Kota moved to Malvern in the middle of his eighth-grade year and graduated in 2022. He became a member of the Soccer team for 4 years and while complaining about running, he loved it. Dakota stayed as an average student he never pushed to excel to the level he could have, and he would tell you himself just that. Kota was interested in making friends laugh and having fun; It didn't matter if you were the worst student or Valedictorian to him, if you were his friend, he would share his love.
Dakota worked at the Pactiv plant in Malvern as an operator, and worked with people who would further become friends, share in his life, and become stories the next day. He was not afraid of hard work as long as there was a paycheck attached to it, apparently taking out trash and cleaning his room were not paying positions. He was living the dream life; lots of money, no bills, no stress, just friends and his motorcycle which he so loved riding alone but especially with friends.
Kota was passionate about loving, he loved his family and helping them when he could with a hug or smile. He loved his friends, who got to see the young man who would do what he must for a smile and a laugh if it would help. He loved his Lulu puppy, which would be stolen from his parent's room nightly to be held and loved upon. He truly loved life and having him love you was a blessing to have in your heart.
Dakota was met in Heaven by William Dillon grandfather and Harold Wayne Smyers grandfather. Pastor John Powell who led him to Christ, and of course his beloved Boxer George who probably knocked him down as well as others who wait for us.
Dakota leaves behind with love, memories, and joy for his gift of love his parents, Melanie and Dale Dillon, His brother Daniel Dillon and significant Kailey. Daniel with whom he shared many memories fishing, gaming and sending hilarious videos. His sister, Mikayla Underwood and husband Gus, Mikayla who carried him around like a doll when he was born and shared so many laughs with him growing up. His nephew, Owen Underwood who would have loved Dakota and one day will feel his love. With love he leaves behind Grandparents, Ann Smyers and Ronald and Marge Porter, His Aunts with whom he shared love Shawn, Colleen, Jill and Mary, along with manly love from his uncle's Sam, Randy, John and Jeremy. Cousins Will, Carson, Levi, Justin and JJ. Many more scattered who would have loved to have known him. Special family friends whom he loved the Mims and Morton Families who he has known all his life and the Revis Family who took him into their love like natural. Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 22, 2023, at Gospel Light Baptist Church off Tanner Street starting at 2:00 PM with Pastor Jon Horton officiating. Funeral arrangements entrusted with Atkinson Funeral Home of Malvern, Arkansas.  Online condolences can be made at www.atkinsonfuneralhome.net.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a notice, traditionally published in a newspaper or online, that announces a person's death and provides details about their life, their family, and the upcoming funeral services or memorials. It's a way to both inform and celebrate the life of the deceased.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

An obituary typically includes a detailed biography of the deceased, while a death notice is a shorter announcement that may only include the name, date of passing, and information on the funeral service or memorial.

Who writes an obituary?

Obituaries are often written by immediate family members or close friends, but they can also be written by the funeral home staff or a professional writer at the request of the family.

What should be included in an obituary?

An obituary generally includes the full name of the deceased, dates of birth and death, a brief overview of their life, achievements, family members, details about the funeral or memorial services, and any preferred charities for donations.

How do I begin writing an obituary?

Start by gathering the basic facts about the person's life and death. Write a draft focusing on who they were, their impact on those around them, and how they will be remembered. Be sure to include service times and donation information if applicable.

Is it necessary to include cause of death in an obituary?

Including the cause of death is a personal choice. There is no requirement to disclose it, and some families prefer to keep this information private.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary. It may be just a few sentences or a longer piece that fully captures the person's life story. Consider the space limitations of the chosen publication platform.

Where should an obituary be published?

Obituaries are commonly published in local newspapers, but can also be posted online on memorial websites, social media, funeral home websites, or community bulletin boards.

Is there a standard structure or format for an obituary?

While there is no set structure, most obituaries follow a similar format: starting with an announcement of death, biographical information, significant relationships, service details, and closing with memorial information or special thanks.

How do I handle an obituary for a sensitive or complicated situation, like a child or an estranged family member?

Approach these situations with care and respect, focusing on the person's life and relationships that mattered. It's okay to gloss over complications or only include positive aspects of their life to honor their memory.

Can I include a photograph with an obituary?

Yes, a photograph can be a meaningful addition to an obituary. Most publications allow for a portrait to accompany the written content.

What if I don’t know all the details of the person’s life?

Do your best to gather information from available sources like family, friends, or public records. It's also acceptable to write that certain life details are "unknown" or focus on what is known.

Is it appropriate to add personal anecdotes or a short story about the deceased?

Yes, adding personal stories or anecdotes can be a beautiful way to share the unique aspects of the person's life and personality, providing a deeper connection for readers.

How soon after a death should an obituary be published?

Obituaries are typically published as soon as practical after death, often within a few days, to ensure that those who knew the person are informed in time to attend services.

Are there cultural or religious considerations to be aware of when writing an obituary?

Certain cultures and religions have specific traditions or protocols that should be considered when writing an obituary. Whenever possible, consult family members or leaders within the community for guidance.

Can I ask for donations to a charity in an obituary?

Yes, it is common to mention a charity for memorial donations in lieu of flowers. Be sure to include the charity’s name and any relevant donation information.

How can I ensure an obituary is respectful and honors the deceased?

Be honest, but focus on the positive aspects of their life. Avoid controversial details that may cause distress. It’s important to handle every aspect of the obituary with sensitivity and care.

What is the etiquette for listing survivors and predeceased family members?

Survivors and predeceased family members are typically listed in order of closeness, such as spouse, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, siblings, and extended family. It's often customary to include significant others, stepfamily members, and sometimes close friends.

Should I mention the deceased's employment history or educational background?

Listing employment and education can be relevant, particularly if the deceased achieved notable success or there was significant involvement in their field. It can also provide context about the person's life and interests.

What if the deceased did not want an obituary published?

If the deceased expressed a wish not to have an obituary published, their wishes should be respected. Alternatively, consider a private obituary shared only with close friends and family.

Can I update an obituary after it is published?

In print, it is not usually possible to update an obituary once it has been published. However, online obituaries can often be edited or amended as needed.

Legal considerations mostly pertain to respecting privacy and avoiding defamatory content. Ensure all information is accurate and approved by immediate family members. In terms of restrictions, follow the guidelines set by the publishing platform or newspaper.
